Date & Time: The moment Ariel got home from fighting Purple Man JP between Anansi and Ariel Ariel sighed as she stepped into her bathroom, it had been some hard weeks… months… year… whatever. It had been a long hard time. She looked in the mirror as she zipped down her suit and sighed as her cold was released and filled the bathroom, creating a small layer of frost on the mirror. She slowly grabbed a cloth and wiped away the frost, seeing her own aching body reflected and sighed again. Her muscles needed a warm shower, but she couldn’t give it to it, so instead she stepped in and let the cold water run down soothingly over her skin, hoping that would make it better. It wasn’t until she stepped out of the shower and dried herself that she remembered something or rater; someone. A gasp escaped her lips and she covered her mouth. She had been so pre-occupied with worrying for her family, her co-workers and herself that she had forgotten all about the one person she should have been thinking about the whole time and she felt the guilt rush over her, filling up her every fiber. She looked down ashamed, not able to look in the mirror as she walked out of the bathroom and into her bedroom. There was no sign of him. She quickly grabbed a pair of shorts and a top, thinking everything through. She walked into the kitchen where she found a small note on the counter with his handwriting. It was so small and the words so few, though they said a lot. ‘I love you’. It was in that moment, when she read the note that she knew the answer to a question se had not asked and the tears started to run down her cheeks. She knew she loved him, but she also knew that he loved her more and that she wasn’t good for him… not yet at least. She was still selfish, she wasn’t done learning and she was turning into someone who put her career above their relationship. Long nights had passed where she hadn’t come home and when she had come home she had discovered he had made dinner and waited for her. They hadn’t fought… ever… he had just forgiven her like that and it annoyed her… it annoyed her that he never stood up for himself against her. Ariel looked up into the empty space of her apartment, the tears having soaked her cheeks; she knew she had to break up with Christian. For both of them, before they were both destroyed by their relationship. Him by her being the way she was… and her by not being ready. It was the simple and mature thing to do. Anansi fiddled a little to find his keys to the apartment in his pocket, he had been down to buy some groceries trying to keep himself occupied instead of just sitting around and worry if Ariel was going to make it back or not. He had been worrying about her once she had told him she was going after the Illuminati. Once he had found the keys he stuck them in the lock, only to discover that it was unlocked and he felt a bit relieved thinking it must be a sign that she was home. He stepped in and set the bags down before turning to her, smiling beneath his mandibles before he saw her tears. He quickly walked up to her and wrapped four of his arms around her and the last two rubbed her back and hair. “Are you okay? What’s wrong? I’ve been so worried about you!” he said moving to kiss her forehead. Ariel heard him fiddle outside of the door and she wondered if she should go over and open the door for him, but she couldn’t. She couldn’t move. It was like her legs were numb and all she could do to stand up was lean on the counter like she was doing. It felt like a bad dream and she wanted to get out of it, wake up in his arms and know everything was just right… but it wasn’t just right… not anymore and it wasn’t fair to either of them. She heard him step inside and set the bags; oh god… he had even been considerate enough to buy them groceries… he was truly the best man that existed… The tears ran more consistently now and she moved to dry them away before he saw them, but it was too late. She felt him wrap his arms around her and for just a second she allowed herself to linger in his embrace, letting the familiar feeling of security fill her before she gently pushed herself out of it. She looked up at him trying to smile and lighten the mood like she always did, but her tears only made her features seem more pained than fine. She took a deep breath and then shook her head. “No…” her voice broke over into sobs and she covered her face for a few seconds. Anansi was confused as to why she had pushed him away when she obviously needed comfort and it dawned on him that maybe this didn’t have anything to do with what she had experienced out there, but something else. “What’s wrong? Was it something I did?” he asked in a worried voice, fighting the urge to reach out for her. He didn’t like to see her cry and only wanted to dry away her tears. Ariel shook her head and bit her lip trying hard to find the right words. Would it really be so bad to give it all a chance? Was this really necessary? She looked at him and knew her answer. She had to do it. She scratched her eyebrow as she looked down. “No… you’ve been wonderful… absolutely perfect…” she almost whispered and cleared her voice. “I…uhm… I just realized…” she held the note he had left her in her hand and tightened her grip. “That though I love you…I have to break up with you…” she finally said and let the shock from her words hit them both. The moment he registered her words he stopped in his tracks and it felt like everything inside of him stopped as well. His arms hung down numbly by his side, his eyes had stopped flashing around and only focused on her now. Her beautiful red wavy hair, her perfect blue skin and her features that always seemed so flawless, like her eyes and lips. It took him a while to process what she had just said and after a moment he looked away and in a shaky voice said: "I can see why you want to break up with me. Who would want to continue dating a freak like me?” His words hit her harder than a bucket of warm water and she quickly reached out to him and took his hand in hers, “It has absolutely nothing to do with your appearance, Christian and you should know that!” she said. No… the truth was much worse… had it only been that… “It has something to do with… You’re just there for me… I don’t think about you every moment like you do… I love you but I can’t give you what you so deserve… I’m just starting to grow… my work is becoming a priority… And I’m scared. We’re moving so fast… you never put yourself firs when it comes to me, which means I just run you over and I can’t stand it… I love you… I really do… but I can’t be with you anymore…” Her words only made it worse to begin with. He felt the anger rise in him and he wanted to shout and tell her she sounded stupid. He pulled his hand away from her and looked quietly at her. He thought about what she had said and slowly started to realize that what she was saying was true. But this wasn’t her pushing him out of her life, which for some strange reason was a comfort to him. “I understand…” he said and started to move to get his knives and clothes. Ariel looked at him, feeling an empty space where her heart used to be and she grabbed his arm again when he had packed “We’re still friends… right?” she asked him desperately not wanting him out of her life. Anansi stopped and looked at her and then nodded wrapping her into his arms and gave her one last sensual kiss. “We’ll always be friends.” He said and jumped out the window with his stuff. Ariel looked after him as he jumped out and felt the silence and loneliness fill her up. It was over. They had broken up. |
