PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

HEIGHT:6'6"
BUILD:Due to his partly flesh, partly iridium make up Mettle weighs in at 1108 lbs. and will grow even heavier as he changes. As he’s replaced surfing with body building his frame is quickly shifting from the lean compact muscles of a surfer into the bulky muscles and ropy tension of a weight lifter.

DISTINGUISHING MARKS: Where he has been injured the tissues have become red iridium. About half his face is a red metallic skull and various spots where he has lost skin are hard crimson metal.
CLOTHING STYLE:Ken likes to wear whatever is functional and comfortable. Jeans and a tee shirt, board shorts and a smile, under armour gear, a well cut suit, its all the same to him. He used to love bright festive colors, however since the days of his mutation he tries to mitigate his red coloration with dark colors and blacks.
UNIFORM:standard black and gold X-Student uniform, worn a little tighter than necessary

POWERS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Conditional Holistic Regenerative Transmutation

The genetic mutation has caused concentrations of iridium to form within the cell membranes, cytoplasm of the cellular structure, and some biochemical irregularities in the blood.

While different soft tissues, cartilages, and bones have various functions, no biological system is hindered or compromised given these changes. No specific benefits are inherent without environmental or external pressures.
When subjected to significant injury or high levels of energy a transmutation of the cellular structure occurs which causes an exponential generation and concentration of iridium in the affected cells. Open injuries directly
interacting with the atmosphere increase the transmutation effect by several orders of magnitude and result in a corresponding release of heat galvanizing the surface structure but inhibiting full regeneration.
Regarding the human body, high-energy impacts are simultaneously injurious and separation of one effect from the other has not yet been possible. However, should separation be possible, it is expected that either injury or energy would produce the same result.

Based on personal history and observable results, the minimum energy/injury required to initiate the regenerative transmutation is decreasing. As the transmutation continues, it will accelerate significantly. When critical mass is reached, the transformation will likely be modeled by an exponential growth curve until full conversion is reached.

This is evidenced by the initial catalyzing injury sustained during the surfing accident. Less severe injuries (minor scrapes, bruises, and cuts) previously healed without any material transmutation. Post accident some of these less severe injuries do result in material transmutation to iridium.
Transmutation works on both local and holistic levels within the physiology. Post accident transmutation of the face resulted in the local exoskeleton formation but also the entire skeletal structure and all soft tissues were reinforced via iridium transmutation in order to support and move the increased weight.

The strengthen cell membranes and cytoplasm is less compressible than normal, transfers energy more readily, and conducts electricity more efficiently. This resulted in a significant increase in strength. The increased electrical efficiency means more current reaches the muscles and the force generated by contraction is increase significantly. Similar muscular strength increases have been documented during electrocutions and seizures.
The decreased compressibility provides greater support to prevent possible injuries from the increased weight of the body and attempting to lift or move objects using the newly increased strength. This increased rigidity allows the cell membranes to more securely interlock within the musculature and move greater loads using the same energy. It also results in a significantly greater transfer of kinetic energy making objects easier to lift and improving concussive damage.

When fully converted, projections indicate complete immunity to physical injury and a minimum lifting capacity of 200,000 tons. Maximum lifting capacity is unknown and too little data is available to accurately project it. Currently, the maximum lifting capacity is approximately 10 tons.
Mental attacks should be effective, barring they aren’t relying on physiological manipulation. Generating a seizure, mental blasts (overload of the synapsis), mental shutdown, and/or physical puppeteering will only work the first time. After injury the neurons will transmute and become resistant. Illusions, mental communication, false memories, and other predominantly non-physical intrusions are effective and should remain equally effective after full conversion.

Viruses, bacteria, and other diseases are less effective due to the foreign genetic elements inhibiting their normal life cycle and resulting damage to the body. These will continue to become less effective as the transmutation progresses. Iridium is naturally metabolized and interacts biologically via asymmetric hydrogenation. This process is currently used in the production of pharmaceuticals.

Given the metabolism, asymmetric hydrogenation, and resistance/immunity to viruses, bacteria, and disease; it is probable any carried diseases will mutate, especially viruses. It is almost a certainty that the subject will become a universal carrier once fully converted. When a mutated disease is transmitted to a more normal human host, its rate of mutation will most likely increase causing a weaponized version of the original version to be formed.

These are the preliminary findings based on the current data available. Further observation and samples will be required for a more refined assessment.

It is recommended that mental conditioning be used to ensure control once fully converted. A psychological profile must be developed to determine the best method control and conditioning. Please note that as the conversion progresses, relating to the human condition will become increasingly difficult given the loss of sensory inputs and normal social contact. This will need to be accounted for.

It would also be wise to develop a device that it could wear without harming humans, but that would kill all hazardous viruses and bacteria present. Using the subject as a biological weapon incubator would best be done under controlled laboratory conditions.

Finally, a strong telepath should be retained as a failsafe to direct the subject if the mental conditioning fails.
WEAKNESS:

After injury the neurons will transmute and become resistant. The last consideration is theoretical. Due to its high heat tolerance and stability, Iridium has been used to produce antimatter in particle accelerators. Given the iridium concentration in the subject and its natural regenerative properties under high-energy bombardment, it is possible that the outer layer of iridium “Skin” could convert to antimatter. This would instantly result in a nuclear reaction of critical mass. Based upon the available data, it is possible for the subject to transmute fully (if not already converted) and survive this explosion.

PERSONALITY
Mettle personifies the concept of the gentle giant. He is thoughtful, exceedingly kind, slow to anger and quick to forgive. He has a habit of thinking the very best of almost everyone he meets and trying his best to always give folks the benefit of the doubt. He laughs easily and is always quick with a kind word or to apply himself to any task that needs doing and he believes he’s capable of sorting out. He appears as an extrovert that truly wants the best for others and has no problem giving himself for the greater good.

Though this impression is true in many aspects, in many other ways it’s a shell to protect the young man wrapped inside of it. Ken fears his own power and has all but given up on ever curing his condition. After all it’s a natural process like the Thing and no one’s cured him. Ken knows that with the slightest mistake he could hurt, perhaps even kill others. He also knows that his condition can only get worse. One day he’ll be nothing more than a living statue, unfeeling, uncaring, with the strength and invulnerability of a god. Or perhaps he’ll die before that happens.. He lives in fear of that day and of his powers in general. So he’s determined to live the best he can until that day. Ken by no means has a death wish, he just accepts his days are limited and wishes to make the most of them.
At times Mettle truly believes his current state is a form of punishment. He had fallen off the path of what most consider good behavior and so lost his face, his career, his life. He knows he can not fix this, but those lessons of doing right and God will reward you in his childhood refuse to depart.

When Ken relaxes and resists his own drama and heroic impulses he is revealed as a very down to earth teen that enjoys weight lifting and flirting with the other gender. He tends to switch between surfer lingo and what he calls “classroom words”. Relaxation and enjoyment of each day ride high on his list as does being at peace. He is more than willing to work his hardest and do his best as long as the task isn’t academic. When it comes to mutant human relations, he takes a live and let live approach. At times he wonders why the school isn’t an integrated one that could teach mutants and humans to coexist in real world conditions.

HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE Kenneth Elliott Mack was born to Raymond and Holly Mack in the city of Hilo, in the state of Hawaii, in the country of the United States of America. His birth caused a great deal of joy as the couple had been through several miscarriages and at that point wanted a baby more then anything in the world. They had the means, they both had easy, well paying jobs in the hotel industry. They had the desire, and with Ken they finally had the result. His childhood followed what tourists call the “Hawaiian Standard”, a lot of time outdoors, fairly good marks in school, a bundle of close friends, and a very low level of responsibility.

His parents spoiled their first child merciously and Ken ate it up. As long as he maintained a b- or better average and kept his room clean, his parents were more than happy to let him set his own hours and fill them as the young child wished. This is not to say they let him run amuck. Hilo is a tight community and there was always people about to keep an eye on their child. They saw Ken as a chance to learn and grow and understand how to raise a child and encouraged him in what ever took his fancy. When his sister Jessica was born, Ken’s parents took a more active role in both of their childrens lives. They thought the experiment was over and their real work could begin. Church attendance became mandatory and manners became highly regarded.

The new, more structured environment at home did wonders for Kenneth. He paid attention more, did what he could to help with his sister and at the age of seven found a lifelong interest in the sport of surfing. By the age of 12 he was entering and winning local competitions. The boy took to the water like a duck and the board like he was born on it. He was happiest just out in the vast blue ocean, lying on his board and thinking about life. His hobby quickly became his obsession and he grew into a legend of the beaches.
DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009)
To Ken it seemed that as soon as he found his “thing” and was moving through life at a great clip, the world ended. There was all kinds of things on the television about far away places that he didn’t understand and his parents dreaded. Then one day the weather went insane and the long taught “ring of fire” that Hawaii was known for rose again. Things were bad, really bad in Hilo. Typhoons ripped across the islands, leaving strips of wasteland, death, and disorder in their wake. Ken’s parents took him and his sister to a shelter and spent most of their time out helping people survive and later rebuild. Ken in some ways started to hate that their parents seemed more interested in their neighbors than their own children. Jessica just hoped everyone would live through the storms.

POST-APOCALYPSE
The Macks hard work during the Apocalypse paid off in spades. Their hotel manager left the islands and gave the hotel into their capable hands. They were further awarded a government contract to house and aid those who had lost their homes. The sudden income increase and more importantly changes in his parents responsibilities led to a relapse of freedom for Ken and his sister.
Ken’s time on the beach and his love affair with surfing turned serious. He had found something he excelled at and seen what he thought was the worst the world could do to him. He threw himself into his new life with nothing held back. By the time he was 14 he lived for the beach and his only friends were fellow surfers. His grades slipped into the low Cs and his parents grew concerned.

What they didn’t know was how far their “dream child” had fallen. Sex, drugs(mostly steroids), booze, and endless time on the water, regardless of what he was supposed to be doing, had changed Ken. He was wilder, more willing to take risks, and less willing to think things through. However his surfing talents only grew.

PURIFIERS The young surfer took a brief break from his hedonistic lifestyle to follow the strange events that filled the news. Somehow a group of people called mutants had come into being and others decided they needed to stop existing. The whole thing seemed like a modern day race war and made Ken very distressed. On the beach everyone adopted the code of live and let live. Why couldn’t these people do the same? Mutants couldn’t be that different from other people. When things led to the bombing of a school, he was appalled. Yet again in america the innocent paid for the crimes of others. Still, time passed, the media covered topics and life ground on as an endless series of adventures on the beach and terribly mundane days at school.

SKRULLS Then aliens, no seriously aliens from outer space, invaded the Earth. No one quite knew their motives or plans and panic ensued. Soon however the aliens were revealed to be saviors, not conquers, benevolent, not tyrannical, and left everyone wonderfully free to live life as they desired. Then just as suddenly the aliens were revealed to be scum sucking evil types that wished to control the human race. Which was mostly ok as they had pretty much been defeated by then. The Mack family still has no real understanding of any of this.

CURRENT HISTORY
By his 16th birthday Kenneth was easily considered one of the best in Hawaii and was being groomed for world competition. The young man continued to win everything he entered and his parents simply had no idea how to change his behavior or how to help him. His sister Jessica however took a different path. She found her way in the pews of the church and the seats of the classroom. The little girl was bright, intense, and studious. When she was young her and Kenneth were the best of friends and she nearly worshipped her brother. However by the age of nine she had decided his lifestyle was wrong and prayed every night for a change.

The earnest little girl received her wish, though the circumstances were far from what she had imagined. Ken was entered in the NSSA National Championship. He had his sponsors, his parents were thrilled. He was a big name in the under 18 circuit, almost at the level of Bethany Hamilton his idol (and secret crush). During the prelims he slipped way too far out to catch a huge wave. As it crested he spun wrong and the wave buried him, right into a coral reef. The impact and residual motion from the wave tore apart his tether and dragged the teenager bodily across 80 feet of coral. tearing off skin, muscle and tissues with each scrape. All that his watchers saw was to boy go under and not surface again for almost 10 minutes after his broken board bobbed up.

When the young man made it back to shore however he thought himself to be perfectly ok. He didn’t hurt at all, the wave was spectacular, and he could get another board in time to still compete. Everyone else however instantly freaked out. Half of Ken’s face had been completely torn off down to the bone and in various places his skin was gone revealing muscle tissue. Said bone and tissue however was crimson and strangely shiny and he wasn’t bleeding at all.

Paramedics were of course called and they tried to talk then restrain the injured surfer. The newly revealed mutant was having none of that however and tried to push the medics away. Instead they were flung away as if hit by a tornado, leaving one of them critically injured when he collided spine first with their own ambulance. Rather than risk more people being injured his parents quickly rushed the shell shocked teen off the beach and back home. Over the course of a month and in a far too rapid to process sequence of events Ken learned that he was a mutant like he had seen on tv, that his flesh had become a sort of organic iridium, this would happen everytime he was injured, that his weight had increased far beyond what even the best surfboard could hold; thus ending his career, that his friends were afraid of the immensely strong and horribly ugly mutant that had been hiding in their midst, and that his easy life of beach fame was over before it really began.

Ken was devastated. His life and any he could imagine seemed gone in a flash. He didn’t know what it meant to be a mutant, hadn’t even given it the slightest thought. His life became a series of moments of hiding from his friends and pushing away his family interspaced with weight lifting. He was tremendously strong and that seemed the only upside. His parents however had heard of a school for mutants, even better one that specialized in teaching youngsters how to control and accept their gifts. They called the school and Mettle was on his way. (Note: I would be very interested in playing out a recruitment thread with whoever would be sent to bring Mettle in)

SAMPLE RP POST:
His parents were against it, his friends were against it, common sense might even been against it, but the decision had been made. Today Ken Mack got out of his bed and went out and about to the gym. Yes half his face was gone, yes the people he considered friends had distanced themselves from him, yes his sister’s pleas for change had altered his life permanently. That however was not the point. To give up, to just hide from everything, that would be the real failure. So here he went, out into the hustle and bustle of Hilo, his face exposed, his muscle shirt showing off the marks up and down his arms, his shorts revealing the shiny red metal bits of his legs. He didn’t hide (much), he didn’t shrink from people’s glances (that often), he held his head high (high enough at least), and looked people in the eye (after all one was missing an eyelid).
The walk to Penn Training and Fitness was short, but pointed. People starred, kids shrank back, when he gave greetings some people returned them and quickly looked away, others mumbled something and sped up out of his way. As he walked the young mutant thought about what his reaction would be to a man with half his face gone and a red metallic skull revealed underneath. He’d like to be able to say that it wouldn’t phase him, or that he’d quickly get over the shock. Most likely though those were untruths. There weren’t any mutants in Hilo that he knew of. Ken was unique, frightening, an unknown property. There was no shouting, no threats, no glares or challenges. No one took exception with him or hated him, the indifference and pressing need to get away from him was in a way worse and worsened his feelings of isolation and unease.

All of the changed the moment the iridium laced teen walked into the gym. As one of the primer MMA training places in the world they had seen all types, trained all types, and dealt with people with far stranger hang ups than anything Ken could be. The gretter did her job well, favoring him as she did all customers, with a soft smile and an appearance of interest in whatever he said. The fact that she was beautiful certainly didn’t hurt in the slightest. He found himself flirting back almost without thought. The older woman gave him a giggle and made sure he signed in properly. Ken loved this gym, when he could still surf without snapping a board or risk drowning he was here almost daily. The atmosphere was pretty much the same, though his routine was far different.

He sped through the locker room and into a quick, brutally hot shower. The point was to relax the muscles, get some heat going, and clean up. Strangely the heat seemed more distant today, less scalding, the steam worked wonders though getting his muscles warm and ready. Next was time to slip into a pair of boardshorts and his new NIKEs and pump some serious iron. No cardio today, his six pack hadn’t slipped when his board had. The weight bench went up to 600lbs normally. The last time he was here Ken had convinced some of the staff and later some of the “kids” (newbies to the gym) to gather more and more free weights and brought the main load up to 800lbs. After lifting this effortlessly he had a discussion with the management and they ordered a bench set to take up to a ton for the former pro surfer. This was the day to test it. Perhaps his new life came with some advantages after all.

No shirt, no special prep work, no lifters belt, just him and the massive bar and gigantic weights. Ken choose two helpers and they got to work. The key was to start light and work up, so the first set of 12 reps was at 400lbs. The weight increased swiftly from there, 600, 800, 1,000, 1,400, all pounded out in quick easy bursts. He didn’t sweat, breathe hard, or even look like he was concentrating. A crowd had built up, people were giving hesitant cheers and Ken was loving the spotlight. Here was something he could do, a way to prove that he was still the man, that whatever he put himself to could be accomplished. 1,600, 1,750, 1,800, bam, bam, bam, the weight went on, he bent his arms, the bar went up and the bar went down. At 1,900 he finally felt it. The pressure rolled from his palms through his arms and across his chest. This was the burn, the purpose of his exertion. 12 reps later it was time for the big finish, a full ton of weights.

The workout room was full, people were placing bets and cheering (or booing) him like any other sport. The taboo of being a mutant, of being young, of being disfigured, didn’t matter anymore. It was him and his task, the man vs the metal, with the winner taking all the glory. Ken bit down, smiled and pushed, he pushed with everything in him, holding back was for losers and you never knew what you could do until you tried. The bar went up, then kept going up. The teen let out a gasp of surprise as the heavy, massive system flew from his hands and crashed into the ceiling high above. The cheers, booing, and sounds of excited spectators quickly turned to screams of concern and fear as the weights embedded themselves into the ceiling and gravity applied it’s effects. The dangerous, deadly objects would come down any moment and hurt or kill one or more people, such were the immutable laws of physics.

Ken didn’t think, didn’t ponder his feelings, didn’t think about consequences, he simple reacted. Those close to him he scooped up and tossed away as gently as he could. He yelled apologies and prayed that he wouldn’t hurt someone. A moment later he was up on the workbench with his shoulders braced and his hands above his head. The bar was coming down full force with the tremendous load still upon it. A ton of pressure with much much more added from its fall. True to his nature Ken caught it. He could feel his muscles clench, the weight all but overcoming. Internally tissues tore, joints were pushed well past their comfort zones and bones were jammed together. The pain was immense but he would not fall, he would not falter or let this thing tear through the floor. He would pass this test and never let such a stupid mistake happen again. With a final shout of grit and pain he placed the bar back in the bench rack where it belonged and sat down heavily. It felt like every joint had been popped loose and his soul was bleeding.

The managers however had already called the police. Far from being a hero Ken Mack was escorted out and told not to return. If he had been of age he would have spent the night in jail. The police made things clear, he was a menace to “normal” folks and should stay away. Anymore trouble and charges would be filed. The younger officer even had the gall to ask him to sign an autograph for his son. After all Ken Mack used to be an up and comer in the surfing world...
