Electrokinesis / Cloned Origin

Midnight

The floor to ceiling windows faced the city, and the magnificent fireworks display that rang in the New Year. Jonny watched them exploding over the city, dressed very lightly after the events of earlier in the evening, which would be best left to the imagination as Jonny, for all his boisterousness and friendly flirting, was a southern gentleman at heart... at both of his hearts. Hooray for cloney redundancies. He offered the glass of champagne in his hand to his companion and sometime more, Maria Hill, with a smile, "It's good to see the city lit up with explosions that have nothing to do with some supervillain attempting to bring it down around our ears, isn't it?"

He tapped his glass to hers as he slipped back into bed, beside her, the ports in his palms sparking a little lightning into the glass so that the champagne fizzed just a tiny bit. "To a year with more snuggles and less strife. I think we can manage that, right?"

Things were never easy for people in position of power, not with the world as it was. Maria was the Sub-Director of Shield, and Jon was Volt, second in command of X-Factor. She was the law, he was a vigilante. She was human, he was cloned from a long dead mutant. She lived in an ultra modern aircraft carrier in the sky surrounded by armed agents and he lived in an ancient city a mile beneath the ground with a family of damaged do-gooders and a trio of mushroom kids. Life was hard, and one might say that they had nothing in common but that the pieces fit together very nicely.

Perhaps.

But Jon, for all the complexities of what exactly he was, was really just a very simple creature, and life, to him, had been proven too short already to worry too much about the propriety of it all. He liked what he liked, and he did what he did, and he loved who he loved. Maria Hill made him happy, and made him think naughty thoughts with a bat of her eye. No point in denying it.

He slipped his arm around her and pulled her close as they watched the fireworks, and he said, "Happy New Year, Pretty Lady, I'm glad I'm spending it with you."

Unsurprisingly Maria Hill was not the kind of person with an abundance of down time. Nor was she the kind of person who really wanted a huge amount of down time. There was a reason why she hardly saw anyone outside of work colleagues or those she met in the line of duty. Very few relationships had survived her rise through the ranks of SHIELD, not that there had been many to lose in the first place. Jon was an aberration in her life, someone who had managed to stick around over the last three plus years they had known one another. He was an odd one; the clone of a dead X-Man, now the second-in-command of X-Factor. Still, there was something about his carefree approach to life that worked and he had never demanded more from her than she could give.

She surveyed his figure with satisfaction as he turned away from the window and moved back towards her bed, where she was seated upright, leaning against the headboard, sheets casually wrapped around her. “Did you just jinx us?” She questioned, lightly - a tone rarely heard by most of her colleagues. Pushing her hair, freed from it’s usual constraints, away from her face, Maria reached out with her other hand to take hold of the glass, watching the fizz of blue energy that went through the liquid. As a human she sometimes felt at a disadvantage compared to the super powered individuals around her.

Leaning forwards slightly to allow him to wrap his arm around her, Maria smiled as he pulled her in close. She was not always comfortable with shows of affection, but with Jon, in the privacy of her bedroom, she didn’t mind it so much. Turning her head to the side, she kissed his neck and breathed in the scent of his skin. Reluctant as she might be to admit it, she missed this when they had gone a long time without seeing one another.

“Happy New Year, Sparky.” Maria replied, turning her head away from the crook of his neck to watch the fireworks, thinking back to this time last year. So much had happened in the last twelve months, Namor’s initial attack seemed like a long time ago. She still hated to think of him and Frost waltzing around like nothing had happened, but there was nothing to be done about it. SHIELD had needed both on their side, so a deal had to be struck.

“You were the more appealing option than Fury.” Maria pointed out, somewhat playfully, as she drank some of the champagne from her glass, before handing it over to Jon. “Hold this for me.” Moving out of his arms, she reached over to her bedside table, heedless of the way the sheets slipped from around her. Opening a drawer, she pulled out a neatly wrapped present and tossed it onto Jon’s lap. Inside were two pairs of incredibly gaudy Christmas socks, folded around the ‘real’ present, a man’s soft leather wallet. “Belated Christmas present.” She informed him, before plucking her champagne glass back out of his hand and taking another sip. “Enjoy.”
