DISTINGUISHING MARKS: Daniel has extensive burn scars on his left arm. They begin halfway up his forearm and stretch up his bicep. The scars are darkly tanned and have a melted appearance.
CLOTHING STYLE: Daniel’s style of dress is very down to earth. Growing up his clothes were very utilitarian, they served a purpose. His clothes were meant to get dirty around the ranch and were meant to last. He has a comfortable pair of jeans that he favors and some broken in boots. All of his shoes are mud stained. It is not that Dan lacks a sense of fashion, he is very comfortable in jeans and a simple shirt. He would need advice in the area of dress for certain elegant occasions because, for example, his father had to tie his necktie on his wedding day.
UNIFORM: Being on the Faculty, Shepherd has no combat uniform. If the need arose that he was needed in the field the tracker would use a standard uniform. For Daniel’s training with his powers he uses the basic blue and gold student training uniform.

POWERS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Mutant Detection: This is the first ability that Daniel was determined to possess. He is able to detect the presence of mutants within a 25 mile radius. Each mutant has a distinct aura about them that identifies their specific powerset. Daniel can recognize this signature and pinpoint the location of the mutant in question as long as they are within range. This does not give him the ability to instinctively know what the powers of an unknown mutant are but he would be able to locate them. If Dan has met the mutant before and mentally catalogued the power signature to that person he would be able to identify the mutant without setting eyes upon them. A branch of this ability allows Daniel to have immediate recall and recognition of mutant signatures he has encountered before whether he has identified the mutant or not.

Necrotic Power Impression: A mutant ability that Daniel did not know he possess for many years is the power to permanently copy the powers of a mutant upon their death. The range of this power extends to a radius of fifteen feet. Daniel’s DNA rewrites itself to incorporate the new powers into his body. When the powers are first copied there is a tremendous display of the imprinted power that is beyond his ability to control. Daniel does not gain any of the previous user’s experience with the power and learn from the ground up, as it were, similar to any other mutant that manifests their power at puberty.

Psionic shrapnel: This is currently the only power that Daniel has imprinted, being that of his son. Daniel can generate a psionic discharge of blue colored energy that he and his son termed shrapnel. The size of the shards varies in size as small as grains of sand to the size of dinner plates. The thickness varies as well with the plate sized shards being up to half an inch thick. At their weakest the shrapnel can scrape bare flesh and tear clothing. By exerting more will and effort Daniel can use the larger shards to pierce steel. When he uses this ability Daniel’s eyes shine a light blue. Currently, he is only able to produce a storm of shrapnel in a linear direction in his line of sight.

WEAKNESS:
Mutant Detection: Daniel does not have the ability to determine a mutant’s power based on their signature. He can only correlate their power to their signature through firsthand experience. His power only works with the detection of mutant. Normal, non-powered humans do not produce the power signature that mutants do and Daniel is not able to detect them. He also cannot detect a power signature in a person with latent mutant genes. It is only after the power manifests itself that he can pinpoint them. Shepherd is limited to detecting the location of mutants and cannot determine their actions

Necrotic Power Impression: This ability is always active and Daniel cannot switch it off. When he first imprints ability at the point of someone’s death the power manifests in Daniel powerfully and dramatically beyond his control. When Daniel first imprinted this ability he manifested shrapnel up to four feet wide and two inches thick that encircled the hospital in a swirling maelstrom, a feat he has not come close to recreating.

There is a limit to the number of powers that Shepherd can imprint. Due to the deep emotional and psychological connection he feels with the powers of his son, Shepherd can only imprint two powers. The first power is the psionic shrapnel and this ability is quite permanent. The second ‘slot’ for abilities is variable. Shepherd can maintain this power until it is overwritten by a subsequent imprint resulting from a mutant’s death in his vicinity.

Psionic Shrapnel: The generation of shrapnel is mental in nature. Daniel must exert effort and concentration to produce this ability. A small flurry of the sand sized shards he can maintain with minimal effort. The larger shrapnel he can only maintain for a period of a minute before mental fatigue sets in with the onset of headaches afterward.

PERSONALITY
Daniel Oliver has a very strong sense of responsibility. He believes that everyone should stand up for what they’ve done and take accountability for their actions. Whether the consequences are good or bad they should be faced head-on. Daniel does not regret leaving the school fifteen years ago to be with his family. Shepherd feels that he raised his son the best way he could and that Brandon was on his way to becoming a model citizen and the type of man he could be proud of calling son.

This leads into Dan’s work ethic. He is a very hard worker and the thought of difficult work doesn’t deter him from trying something. Shepherd worked as a mechanic to support his family on top of working toward his degree. This has led him to taking on too many tasks than he can complete and stretch himself thin. When this happens Daniel is most likely going to be harsh on himself. He is aware of this and has made efforts to focus more attention on few projects in order to give himself a better sense of accomplishment. It is sometimes easy to take advantage of Daniel because he is willing to take on more than he can handle. He also hates to leave things unfinished. He is close to completing his history degree and he hates that it has taken so long.

As much as Shepherd appreciates hard work he knows the importance of down time. Growing up he would go hunting, horseback riding, and hiking so when he has the time he does like to devote that precious commodity to the things he enjoys. A lot of these things are the simple pleasures in life. For instance, he would rather spend the night in with dinner among close friends than going to a bar, but he would make the best of such an event nonetheless.

HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE Daniel was born the third of three sons of a rancher and his teacher wife in southern Texas. The family owned a modest parcel of land and a herd of roughly fifty cattle. The Oliver family was not rich and took care of most of the ranch chores themselves, only hiring help for larger projects. Daniel grew up under the expectation that he would be helping around the farm. Before Daniel was old enough to help with mending fences, take care of the cattle, or other strenuous ranch work he was following his father or brothers around to learn the proper way to do things. When he was younger, Daniel enjoyed going with his family to sell the cattle at stock yards. As he became older he had more of a hand’s on experience in the process of driving and unloading the livestock.

It was always expected that Forrest, the oldest brother, would inherit the ranch from his parents so even though Justin and Daniel were expected to help and learn on the ranch they were given a bit more freedom in the exploration of their futures. Daniel did not mind the hard work of the ranch and he enjoyed the outdoors as well, spending his free time from school and chores going hiking, deer hunting, or horseback riding. His ambition for life was in academics. He wanted to become a teacher. His most fascinating subject was History. He loved learning about the past and the idea that history could be presented slightly (sometimes radically) differently by various groups based on their perspective.

Daniel’s mutant ability manifested silently and without immediate notice. Slowly, he began to feel aware of a presence in the periphery of his mind. It seemed random at the beginning. Daniel would be in school or in the city and he could just ‘feel’ something or someone nearby, he could not tell what it was but it stuck out in his mind like a sore thumb. The pieces of the puzzle came together one day in school when Daniel passed another student in the bleachers of a football game. He wasn’t sure how he knew but Daniel was positive the student he passed was the presence he had felt in his mind. He asked some of his friends and found the student’s name to be Chris Prescott.

Daniel watched Chris for the rest of the quarter and decided to follow him after the game resumed after halftime. Daniel tried to stay out of sight the best he could and eventually found Chris breaking into the school. At first Daniel thought Chris was using a blowtorch but the flame he used to burn through the lock came from his hand. The young man that Daniel was following was a mutant! Daniel followed Chris into the school to where the money from the football box office was being kept before the deposit. Daniel realizing what Chris was planning attempted to stop the burglary. In the resulting fight, Daniel’s left arm was burned badly and two of the school’s offices caught fire. Daniel was able to subdue the burglar and get him outside as people gathered around the burning offices. The fire department arrived to put out the blaze and Daniel was given fifteen minutes of fame as the hero who captured the mutant who tried to burn down the school.

After that event Daniel enjoyed a sudden surge of popularity. His father made sure that Dan didn’t get suffer from an inflated ego by providing him with more tasks around the ranch. It was during his fame that Dan met his girlfriend and future wife, Alison. Slowly, Daniel realized he was a mutant as well. When he had spare time from school, chores, and girlfriend Daniel would follow the presences he would detect. It was very rare that the target would out themselves as mutants but Daniel was certain they were mutants and he was one as well. It was easy for him to pass as a normal human and often, Dan didn’t think of himself as a mutant since his powers were, to him, passive in nature.

After graduation, Dan applied for colleges but did not get accepted as he hoped. His grades were passing but not competitive enough to enter the realm of higher education. Daniel helped on the ranch and worked in an auto garage in town to help his family until he was nineteen. The day that Dan was approached by Charles Xavier in the garage is a day that is etched in his memory. Dan could feel an intense presence moving toward him at a steady pace. As soon as Xavier came on his ‘radar’ Dan froze and rose slowly from the open hood of the car he was working on. After a long talk with the telepath that seemed to only be a pause in breath to any outside observers, Daniel agreed to join the Xavier school in 1998 at the age of 19, shortly after the school was opened to more students.

Daniel told his family that he had been accepted to a private school where he could continue his education and build the foundation for a teaching career in history. Dan and Alison decided not to break up but to continue their relationship at a distance and that Dan would visit when he could. For the span of six weeks, Dan trained at Xavier’s school with the codename Orion for his ability in tracking other mutants. His time at the mansion was cut short when Alison revealed that she was pregnant. It was with a very heavy heart that Daniel left Westchester and returned to Texas where he married Alison to begin their family.

Daniel and Alison moved into a small house on the ranch and took a job as a mechanic to support his growing family. Alison gave birth to a healthy son they named Brandon. They led a normal life in Texas helping with the family ranch for many years. In the small town of Blooming Grove it was rare for Daniel to detect other mutants but there were reminders of the other side of his life in flashes on the periphery of his mind in the distance.

In 2002, Daniel’s father died. That tragedy combined with the economic decline of the small farm forced the family to sell the ranch. Daniel, his wife, and son moved to Lexington, Nebraska where his supervisor fixed a position for Daniel as the manager of a garage. Daniel lived in Nebraska without incident for several years until April 2009.

DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009) April 7, 2009 was a hard day for Daniel. He had an especially hard day at work managing the garage. Several orders had not gone as planned and resulted in complaints. He was also dealing with research papers that were due as part of his college classes to get his History degree. It was also the day that Famine swept through the Mid-Western United States.

Daniel and his family were eating dinner when at the farthest edge of his perception he became aware of a mutant signature that was distorted and twisted. It did not seem natural and the presence was sweeping right for them. Leaving dinner on the table Daniel rushed his family into packing bare essentials and rushed them out the door. Alison and Brandon were terrified but Daniel tried his best to calm them. Daniel drove through the night until he could not feel the ill presence behind them.

It was afterward that he learned the Horseman Famine had swept through causing a path of destruction and converted in his wake until the combined efforts of mutants from several factions were able to delay the monster. Alison pressed Daniel on how he knew what was going to happen until he was forced to reveal that he was a mutant. Alison was shocked that Daniel had kept this information hidden for so long. Alison was angry but there were other things to worry about as there were massive power failures worldwide in the wake of Apocalypse. The trio was able to ride out the rest of the attack in a shelter far removed from their home.

POST-APOCALYPSE After Apoclypse, Daniel’s marriage became rocky. The stress of repairing their home added to the fact that Dan had hidden a large part of his life from Alison. They had met because Daniel had used his power to apprehend the mutant burglar at the high school. Daniel tried to make things work and they couple even found time to go to therapy. Soon, Daniel thought the stress was giving him bad dreams and even making him hallucinate he was living a second life.
One day Daniel found that he was not himself anymore and not in the place he believed to be home. Daniel was among those of Earth that switched places with their counterpart in a parallel universe. This version of Daniel went by the moniker Jaeger and worked as a contract assassin for King Magneto in Jus Soli tracking down and eliminating enemies of the state. It was here that he learned of a second facet to his abilities. Daniel learned that he had the ability to permanently copy the powers of those mutants that died in his immediate vicinity, namely those that he killed.

Daniel set out to find his family in this strange new world but was unsuccessful because the world was corrected and Onslaught was defeated by the X-Men and others. The mutant tracker hoped for a happy reunion with his family but found that things were not that pleasant. The alternate version he had traded places with was mean and cruel. Once Jaeger, the WWX version of Daniel, realized he was not in his home world he left Alison and set out to find his lord and master Magneto. Alison believed that Daniel had an emotional break and walked out on the family for two weeks. Thankfully, Jaeger had not contacted the Brotherhood or Magneto.
In the time after WWX, Daniel’s marriage deteriorated even further. The breaking point was when he was approached by members of the Brotherhood to join their ranks. Daniel refused, having seen their terrorist activities in the news and knowing what darkness his powers could hold for his future. In retaliation for Daniel’s rebuff the Brotherhood members destroyed much of the Oliver family’s property. Alison had reached the final straw and filed for divorce earning custody of Brandon. Alison and Brandon moved away leaving Brandon to pick up the pieces of his life.

PURIFIERS Daniel continued to manage the garage and work on his History degree part time. He managed to gain visits to his son but at times Alison had made it overly difficult. Daniel did not press this in court as Alison had threatened to reveal his status as a mutant and have all his visitation rights removed completely. Daniel was fearful of this as the climate of anti-mutant sentiment had increased drastically. Daniel thought about seeking out and joining the Xavier school once more to find a place he truly felt he belonged but did not want to distance himself from his son.

Daniel continued to keep his mutant abilities a secret and passed for a normal human. He could feel the mutant population growing slowly over the years as more signatures appeared on his radar. Suddenly, there came a day that Daniel was glad he never joined Xavier’s. The school was attacked by a group calling themselves the Purifiers. How many of the dead students would he have imprinted had he been there? It was hard to tell.

SKRULLS Daniel’s life continued normally with work and his part time classes. He cherished every visit with Brandon wondering when Alison would use her bargaining chip to get his visitation rights revoked. He was troubled with the stories he saw in the news of mass disappearances and rumors of strange sightings. He was far removed from all of the fighting in New York with the Skrulls being in Nebraska but he was subject to the Complacency Wave and felt an unmitigated devotion to the reptilian aliens. Once the Wave was stopped and the Skrulls repelled Daniel sought therapy. He was truly beginning to struggle with his choice. He felt he had a place with the X-Men to help.

CURRENT HISTORY
Dan was surprised one day when he opened his door to find Brandon on his doorstep. Brandon had run away from home with his mother to see his father. Brandon had manifested mutant abilities and wanted to be with his father. It was the only place he could think of to be. Daniel was outraged that his son had run away but also touched that there was a connection that his son wanted to share. Daniel explained that he had to take Brandon back to his mother but vowed they would practice his new psionic shrapnel powers in private.

Over the course of their next visits together Daniel helped Brandon practice his powers in private. Daniel and Brandon bonded together with their mutant powers together and Daniel even suggested that Brandon go to Xavier’s school but his son didn’t want to. After all, Brandon thought his father had done just fine without going to the school in New York.

There were events in the world that began to shock Dan and Brandon. As the Illuminati began to rise and attack the world at large Brandon had questions about how mutants could use their gifts to do such terrible things. Dan explained that even though mutants were the next step in human evolution they were no better. They deserved to live side-by-side with mankind. Brandon asked if his father felt responsible for any help that he may have given to the school in this time of need. That question cut Daniel to the core. Daniel wanted to help the school but his son was first priority in his life.

Over time, wicked nightmares crept into Daniel’s mind. Night after night, he dreamt that his son was denied to him by his mother and then taken and tortured by Purifiers. It was part of the worldwide plague of nightmares. Dan was unable to sleep through the night without being awakened by the nightmares of his worst fears. It got to the point where Daniel found himself dozing off in the middle of the day only to have the flashes of vivid dreams play before his closed eyes. Thankfully, Exodus’s nightmares were stopped before any lasting damage was done to Daniel or his son.

During their last visit together Daniel and Brandon were in a car accident. They were rushed to the hospital emergency room. Daniel had suffered a broken arm but Brandon’s injuries were much worse. Unrelated to his mutant powers, Dan felt that his son was hanging by a thread and forced his way into the emergency room. When Brandon died on the table, Daniel imprinted his son’s ability. Dan’s eyes flashed blue and manifested an uncontrolled first display of power. The hospital was enclosed in a swirling mass of psionic shrapnel that Daniel could not control. A small group of Brotherhood and X-Men arrived in hopes to recruit the seemingly new and powerful mutant where Daniel eventually decided to join the X-Men in their faculty.

The mutant tracker chose to join the faculty due to the inexperience with his imprinted powers. He did not want to risk harming one of his teammates with his inexperience with the shrapnel ability. Daniel is also somewhat uncharacteristically gun-shy. His strong sense of responsibility made him wary of putting himself into situations where he could be faced with the death of other mutants in his vicinity and the impression of their powers. In his new position he chose the codename Shepherd, almost the polar opposite of his original codename Orion hoping to find a way that he can protect mutants, especially the students.

SAMPLE RP POST:

Beneath Daniel’s boots, the mud squeezed out funny noises as he walked along the path to approach the waterfall. He was bundled against the winter’s cold but the mist from chill from the water and the hanging mist stretched beyond the pool itself. Dan saw the sheets of ice covering the rocks that hung down in magnificent stalactite-like formations. Sitting at the base of the waterfall, in short sleeves no less, was Andrew.

The other students in the Early American History class had said that Andrew ran away. Dan remained calm and held his composure. A quick scan with his powers let him know that Andrew was still on the grounds and he was not moving. Dan dismissed class for the day and assigned the rest of the class an essay on one of the original colonies and its founding party’s guiding principles. Keeping a close check on Andrew with his powers from across the school grounds, Shepherd grabbed his coat and walked quickly in Andrew’s direction.

The young mutant was surrounded by animals as he sat on a rock near the water’s edge. Birds hopped from one foot to another as they looked at Andrew. A small family of chipmunks was gathered near two stray dogs and there was even a beautiful white tailed doe looking on with gentle eyes. Had the situation been different, say hunting season and one of his students not wanting to run away, Daniel would have loved to have the deer mounted on his wall. “Hey Andy, I heard you were feeling down and wanted to leave the school,” Daniel said as he approached.

“Cut the shit Mr. Oliver, I’m not a five year old,” Andrew said to which Daniel frowned slightly.

“Okay. I found a letter saying that you were running away. It doesn’t look like you got very far. Have a change of heart?” Daniel asked.

“It’s my powers. The others make fun of me. They say stuff like I’m only good for getting woodland critters to do my laundry. I was going to leave but my entourage won’t give me much street cred,” Andrew replied.

Daniel smirked and said, “It depends. If you were looking to strike fear into the hearts of evildoers, then no. But, there might be some girls might be into a guy that has an in with Alvin and the Chipmunks.”

It was Andrew’s turn to smile. “Like, I said, I’m not five but that was a great try, Mr. Oliver.”

Shepherd sat down near Andrew and felt the cold of the stone bite through his pants into his skin. He hoped he didn’t have to sit there for long. “Not everyone has powers that are so outwardly… convenient.” The word that came to mind was ‘useful’ but that might not have helped the situation.

Daniel scanned the furred faces that looked up at the two of the mutants. Thanks to Andrew’s fauna empathy they stood in rapt attention. For the longest time Daniel didn’t think his powers were good for anything other than spying and knowing exactly where a given mutant was at any time. They all had gifts to use in different ways. “I know you don’t want to hear a ‘Give it Time and Your Powers will Grow’speech so I’ll save that spiel for another day and another lecture. But let me tell you how my powers have grown. I can feel every mutant within twenty five miles. Every single one. They can’t move without me knowing about it. Maybe you’ll be the same one day. Perhaps you will know the comings and goings of every mouse, vole, earthworm, and critter out there,” Shepherd explained.

“Be still my beating heart while I hold my breath,” Andrew said grumpily.

“You’ve already been able to sway these animals, but what else?” Daniel said. “Think about it, maybe you could call a pack of dogs for backup. Or a bear. Hell, even a shark.” Daniel added the last one letting his professional veneer slip a little in efforts to bond with his student.

Andrew thought about it and nodded. “I would look pretty badass riding a shark,” Andrew grinned.

Shepherd smiled. He was making contact. “You would be the The Baddest of Asses. Like Gandalf but much less beard.”

“But my shark would take me more than halfway,” Andy added with severe conviction. Daniel could only laugh.

Daniel stood and held out his hand to Andrew. “You coming back in?”

Andrew looked around to his woodland friends. He furrowed his brow and focused on the furred creatures. The animals turned as one in ran in opposite directions. The young mutant stood and shoved his hands in his pockets. “I don’t hold hands, Mr. Oliver. Not five remember?”

Shepherd nodded in agreement. “I can respect that,” he said.

They walked in silence for a few moments before Andrew asked, “So, you know where every mutant is at any given time and you can pin point them like a laser sight?”

“Pretty much,” Daniel replied, knowing he left out the absorption part of his powers but for so long he had only been a mutant tracking beacon.

“So you can point out all of the girls and where they are?” Andrew asked.

“Pretty much,” Daniel responded, knowing pretty well where this was going.

“Care to let the Baddest of Asses in on these locations?” Andrew asked with deep sincerity.

Dan shook his head. “I don’t see you riding any sharks yet so not on your life, kid.”
