PLAYER INFORMATION NAME: George CONTACT: PM HOW YOU FOUND US: From other x-men play-by-post sites OTHER CHARACTERS ON THE SITE none RULES CODE: Blackbird CREDIT WHERE IT'S DUE: N/A CHARACTER INFORMATION Stefan Burnett (MC Ride) BASIC INFORMATION CANON OR ORIGINAL: Original AFFILIATION: Others FULL NAME: Otto Jackson CODENAME: Kongcerto NICKNAMES: CURRENT AGE: 23 DATE OF BIRTH: July 27th MARITAL STATUS: Single SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Straight BASE OF OPERATIONS: NYC TIME AT INSTITUTE: N/A REGISTERED WITH SHIELD? Yes HOMETOWN: Syracuse, NY KNOWN RELATIVES: Natalie “Nat” Jackson (mother, deceased 45), Donte Jackson (brother, deceased 26) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE HEIGHT: 6’0 BUILD: Otto is 175 pounds of lean muscle. Bouts of insomnia and frequent activity make his muscles appear very defined, albeit not very large. He has a larger than average wingspan. Ribs and abdominal muscles are very visible on his nearly fatless midsection. EYES: brown HAIR: black hair kept shaved to short stubble, and has a thick, unkept, black beard DISTINGUISHING MARKS: an assortment of tattoos (see image) CLOTHING STYLE: Otto is often wearing black hoodies and jackets, adorned with underground hip-hop and skateboard references, even in warmer weather. He wears tight black, blue, or tan jeans. He will often have his hood up. When entering his sound-induced rage or when performing, Otto will often take his shirt off. UNIFORM: Otto wears a black, skin-tight top with midnight blue and purple rippling sound-wave patterns adorned throughout. At the center of the uniform is a grey, ancient African style artistic depiction of a male silverback gorilla head. The uniform also consists of ear buds set to play the necessary decibels for physical enhancement. POWERS GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Decibel induced enhancement: When exposed to sounds at a decibel of 90dB or higher (e.g., sound level at which sustained exposure may result in hearing loss), Otto will enter a state of enhanced physical capability, euphoria, and damage resistance. This sound exposure can afford Otto superhuman strength (with max ability to press 5 tons), and makes him about 5x more resistant to injury than an average human. This power is passive, occurring out of Otto’s control. The enhancement from sound exposure is a positive, exponential function of sound strength (dB) and duration. The enhancements will not last longer than 30 minutes after intense sound exposure. The science behind Otto's abilities center around specialization of auditory sensory neurons (inner hair cells) which have unique neural connections that induce a cascade of signaling which increases muscle, bone, and skin density. Otto cannot be damaged by any level of sound exposure. In training and battle, Otto always comes ready with headphones to deliver the necessary decibels needed to empower himself, or to serve as a buffer against environmental noise to prevent himself from breaching threshold and entering a state of rage (see WEAKNESS) What separates Otto from other mutants with superhuman strength, who can generally lift considerably more weight, is his remarkably strong hands and wrists. When sound powered, Otto's fingers lengthen by up to 2-inches and become laced in muscle, as do his wrists and forearms. This give's Otto extraordinary ability to pull and grip objects, making him an exceptional climber and deadly in close range if he gets his hands on an opponent. Howler monkey vocal-mimic: When in his enraged, maxed-out form, Otto can produce the 120 dB roar of a male howler monkey ( youtube link ). This is possible due to a morphing of Otto's vocal chamber and cords during the rage state. His neck visibly balloons to the size of a grapefruit when making the calls. This territorial howl comes in handy as a way of striking fear into the hearts of most creatures, and can easily be confused for the roar of a large predator, causing most lesser-animals to flee the area . Unfortunately (or some can argue, fortunately), Otto cannot use the call to power himself. This is due to similar neural physiology in all humans, which results in perceiving self-produced sounds as quieter than they actually are. WEAKNESS: When exposed to enough dB to enter max strength and resistance (130 dB for 10 seconds, 180 dB for 0.5 seconds), Otto enters a state of feral rage that includes increased aggression and fearlessness. During this phase, Otto can lose some control of his emotions, being quick to anger and over-react. To date, he has never hurt anybody in this state outside of self-defense, but in these incidents, he delivered damage far beyond what is considered reasonable. This state will fade about an hour after the intense sound exposure was experienced. He will often have partial amnesia in regards to what occurred while in this state. The max damage resistance is considerably limited. For example, while most strikes from blunt objects will be ineffective, Otto can still be injured and killed by sharp objects and bullets. These however, do not penetrate the skin as easily as they would an average person (skin is about 5x more resistant to piercing). Otto is also prone to damage from long falls (greater than 100 feet). PERSONALITY Otto wears a placid demeanor over a calculating, suspicious mind. He learned early in life to develop complete independency, as he wasn't able to count on many adult figures in his youth. His highly cautious nature is largely due to growing up in a crime riddled neighborhood, where staying alert was necessary to stay safe from both criminals and the police. Run-ins with the law and gangs has attributed Otto with a fiery angst that can be quickly released when people cross him. Otto's views are close to Libertarianism. In a nutshell, Otto has serious problems with any political system where opportunity is unevenly distributed and where prejudice and injustice can keep minority groups from their equal share of the Earth's resources. That said, he is also somewhat of a Social Darwinist, believing in a survival of the fittest model, and has little sympathy for people who don't contribute to the greater good and still expect their government to support them. Otto believes in the right of the people to overthrow the government if their liberties are at risk, and believes that political systems should do as little as possible in tampering with people's lives. He ultimately believes that government's should concentrate their efforts on protecting natural resources and biodiversity from industrial greed. By dropping out of highschool, Otto was able to build his own curriculum for self-improvement, which involved extensive independent reading into politics, ecology, and music. This has given him a level of intelligence that greatly belies his academic progress. Otto is passionate about art in all forms. He feels empowered by two things in his life: his mutation and his ability to craft and perform music. While he will listen to others, and has genuine concern for the well-being of fellow mutants and all who face hardship, he will rarely offer anything about his own thoughts and history to someone. This obviously all changes when Otto enters the rage state induced by intense sound exposure. In this state, the emotions he keeps cautiously bottled up breaches all calmness and explodes in the form of a fearless, outspoken, wildman. Otto can be a good friend, listening to concerns and going out of his way to help someone, without them ever expecting it from him. He is very good at detecting honesty, and immune to a lot of charms. Otto believes in living as unmaterialistic as possible. Outside of music equipment, he essentially only buys what he absolutely needs to survive, and will only do so from small, local businesses. Otto is also extremely eco-centric, loving experiences in nature. He finds solace by escaping to wild places, surrounding himself serenity. Otto's reserved demeanor is in complete contrast to the demeanor of his stage persona, Kongcerto. He uses his music as an outlet of aggression, with a noted similarity to the attitude he adopts in his power-rigged form. Otto is constantly trying to improve himself, with noted guilt about disappointing relatives who are now gone. This guilt largely stems from past drug abuse and incarceration. With time, he hopes to learn to control his aggression when exposed to intense sounds, and be able to channel his rage towards the true forces of oppression and injustice. HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE Otto was raised in a poor neighborhood in Syracuse, NY by a single-mother who was in-and-out of drug addictions her entire life. This made things very difficult for Otto and his older brother Donte. Otto quickly turned to an alternative, punk scene that included dangerous endeavors into skateboard stunts, drug-use, and petty thievery. Although considered a burden to society, his group of friends made a conscious effort to stay educated about political corruption and injustice through conspiracy journalism and music. At the age of 14, Otto joined an alternative rap group and learned that he could escape his troubled home environment through a musical persona. His rap identity was Kongcerto, and he quickly received notoriety for his aggressive, violent lyrical delivery, accompanied by loud, droning beats. When he realized that he didn’t want to pursue the American dream, Otto dropped out of school in the middle of his freshman year of high-school and dedicated himself entirely to making music. His unique brand of rap earned himself enough of a local and regional following to survive on the road in a beat-up station wagon with his two like-minded friends, one who served as a manager, and the other as a sound engineer and DJ on stage. During these years on the road, Otto became a heavy pot-smoker and drinker. This eventually led to psychedelics, cocaine, and eventually heroin. When Otto was 18, his powers manifested during a concert. A speaker malfunction caused a series of 130dB screeches which eventually sent Otto into his first rage and experience with enhanced abilities. His irrational mind mistook a mosh-pitting girl in the crowd for an ex-girlfriend in danger. Otto dove off the stage into the moshpit and began trying to separate the girl from the danger. This did not sit well with the girl's group of male friends who responded violently against Otto. Not able to control his aggressive retaliation, Otto started breaking bones left and right, tossing the mosh-pitters into walls and smashing faces with super-strength strikes. He was eventually taken down by security and police officers and sentenced to 3 years in prison for a series of battery charges and resistance of arrest. In jail, Otto learned more about his powers. He began to notice the euphoria he would experience when listening to loud music, which was accompanied by unusual levels of restlessness and strength. A most memorable experience occurred during a cafeteria fight, when an officer fired a pellet gun beside Otto’s ear, sending him into an enhanced state. With a single punch to an assaulting prisoner, Otto broke all of the man’s teeth, jaw bones, and nose. This act, and other incidents of misbehavior, increased his sentence to 5 years. DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009) Otto was still in prison in Auburn, NY when War wreaked havoc upon the east coast. The prison management relocated a group of prisoners, which included Otto, to Upstate Correctional Facility in the northern Adirondacks. As the Horsemen took the world to war, Otto and his fellow inmates were ironically some of the safest people on the planet, watching the world burn from a small common room television screen. However, even the layers of metal bars and concrete would not keep Otto safe from the emotional tolls of the Apocalypse. His brother Donte, who had enlisted in the army shortly before the terror began, had been killed in battle during War's attack on NYC. Adding salt to the wound, in her mourning, Otto's mother, Natalie Jackson, overdosed on heroin. Losing the only known members of his family, Otto entered a deep depression and feelings of helplessness. This would spark Otto's thoughts about using his powers to serve a greater good upon his release from prison. More than ever before, he felt the heavy burden of being kept from avenging his fallen relatives from behind bars. POST-APOCALYPSE As the world began to rebuild, Otto was given the opportunity to work for a nearby organic apple orchard on the NY banks of Lake Champlain during his imprisonment at Upstate Correctional Facility, under guard supervision. There he was never exposed to dBs larger than 90, and enjoyed the proximity to nature. Through interaction with a few free folk, he learned just how devastating it was to be on the "outside" during the Apocalypse. Overall, the process was exceptionally healing, bringing him to a place where he could come to peace with the death of his mother and brother. PURIFIERS Upon hearing about William Stryker’s devastating attack on the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, Otto was shaken from his Adirondack bliss and returned to his militant-minded self. He did all he could to learn about the political activity through the propaganda laden major news networks. All the while, he was preparing himself to join the fight for mutant equality upon his release. Otto made more of an effort to keep his mutation a secret from the guards, worried that with the new movement by the Purifiers, he might be transferred to a special prison if found out. To this date he had only raised minor suspicion from the guards and fellow inmates. SKRULLS The situation at Upstate Correctional Facility got chaotic when some Skrull infiltrated the prison shapeshifted in the form of kidnapped guards. Their initial intentions were part of an observatory research project of the judicial system across the nations of Earth. When things turned violent between the Skrull and humanity, the Skrull at Otto’s prison used their shapeshifting abilities to stage a prison riot. During the riot, Otto had been obediently passive in quarantine until the intensified riot sparked a blaring alarm system. This sent Otto into his decibel-induced rage, during which he knocked out a few prisoners before taking cover under his cot. The riot simmered and the Skrull eventually abandoned the prison. The experience vastly increased security around the facility. CURRENT HISTORY Otto would once again find himself protected from world-wide danger by citizen tax dollars while imprisoned during the chaos unleashed by the Illuminati. The rise to domination by the group fed into a decade of paranoid conspiracies that Otto harbored. He felt a strong impulse to juice up on sound, bust out of the prison, and join the fight against the Illuminati, but folded to avoid risks of an extended sentence. Upon his release in late November 2013, Otto contacted his long-time human musician friends and came clean about his mutation. Together, they decided that they would bring a political, pro-mutant brand of rap to NYC. Otto moved to a small studio with his friends, Mash and Boon in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn NY. At night, he performed underground hip-hop shows in Mutant Town and the few mutant friendly venues in the rest of the city. He performed openly as a mutant, with very controversial lyrics, which has been getting him unpleasant attention from anti-mutant groups. SAMPLE RP POST: The backstage room smelled like a blending of weed and vomit. Otto sat on a busted old couch with his hood up, bobbing his head to MF Doom in his headphones. He kept the volume low enough to maintain control, but loud enough for an energy boost. The sound waves seemed to pour through his ear canal, all the way down to the center of his being. It vaguely reminded him of that distant stint with heroin as a teenager: when he didn’t have it, he was a monster…but damn did it feel good when he got a taste. But unlike heroin, this drug turned him into a powerhouse of explosive energy. This would be the first of two consecutive shows at this venue, and Otto was feeling the anxiety. He liked to think the persona of Kongcerto was getting to be bigger than himself, and might be inspiring fellow mutants towards action. It was a unique brand of rap, and certainly the messages were often coded in nonsense, but he got enough feedback to feel like people were starting to get it. Hell, the clubs kept paying, mostly because he drew enough of a human crowd to make the venues good money. Similar to how suburban white kids took to inner-city rap, “homo saps”, as he called them, seemed to eat up his militant pro-“homi-superior” music. A tap on his knee shook him from his trance. He looked up to meet the eyes of his lumberjack-looking friend and DJ, Boon. The hint of a smirk underneath the shrubbery of his tangled red beard meant only one thing: showtime. Otto stood up, shaking the nerves from his limbs and took off his headphones. He could hear the crowd banging on their chests and gave way to a rare smile: the ritual was somehow catching on. Boon made his way to his DJ table. Buttons were pressed, and a heavy bass beat dropped with the mixed in sounds of King Kong roars intermittently. Otto placed the protective earbuds in position to buffer exposure to dBs greater than 120. In time with the sounds of police sirens, helicopters, and gunshots, Otto jumped from behind the curtain onto the stage, his hood still up, and began spitting rapidly through a squealing mic. “Gene-fiends at your bitch’s back---leave our marks, you can’t trace our tracks---spittin’ blood in a crack shack---you got us fuming, dog. we'z a wolf-pack!” The crowd erupted, bodies slamming together as a violent pit rushed at the front of the stage. Fans jumped over each other, reaching their hands up at Otto, who humored a few with a quick slap. It was strange to see some fans wearing Kongcerto t-shirts and hoodies, given how new he was to the area. One hoodie went as far as to have his face pasted over King Kong climbing the Empire States Building. He certainly wasn’t putting those out, but didn’t care enough to stop whoever was. It wasn’t about the money for Otto. He was just happy to get some recognition, and this crowd definitely seemed amped to see him perform. His slew of deranged, aggressive lyrics continued, conjuring the image of a homo-sapien spouse engaging in affairs with a mutant, only to be murdered afterwards by said mutant, the wife's dead body to then be found by the husband when he came home from work, said husband was then dropped by a sniper through his living room window. All the while, droning, heavy beats kept the crowd in a feral sea of contortion. “Purify the fuckin' lies...p-p-p-parity until you die" Otto held the last word out as the music became a mess of gunfire and screams. Nothing seemed out of the norm as of yet, as the crowd was bathed in the sounds of violence booming from the speakers. Sudden flashes would draw Otto's attention to the rear of the venue, as a group of men in black ski masks began pushing their way towards the stage. The flashes were produced by a combination of flashlights and the firing of tasers into unsuspecting members of the crowd who slowed their path to Otto. Kongcerto couldn't say that he didn't see this coming: he had known from the first show he performed that it was only a matter of time before someone or some group took action against him. He turned to face Boon at the back of the stage, whose stern expression suggested that he had seen the men approaching as well. After pumping a raised thumb to the air in Boon's direction, Otto let the amplified sounds empower him. As one of the masked men began to push himself up onto the stage, most of the audience thought it was all part of the act. It wasn't until Otto took a running kick like a punter right into the man’s neck that the crowd entered a panic. The kicked man was launched 15 feet into the air by the force of the empowered Otto’s leg. As the crowd rushed out of the exits of the venue, they stifled the advance of the remaining assailants. This gave Otto and Boon an opening to make a run for the backstage exit, but not before one of the masked men put a bullet in Otto’s upper right shoulder-blade. Due to his damage resistance, the bullet stopped half an inch into his skin, causing him to falter to his knees for a moment. After letting out a pained scream, Otto took Boon’s arm and allowed him to lead him through the exit and into their station wagon. They managed to leave the scene moments before red and blue police car lights could be seen turning the corner behind them. |

Hey George thanks for applying to XMR! While it's not a bad app, there are going to be a few things that will need edits or some more clarification. I'm just going to make a list because it is easier to go through. 1. His powers: I think it is a very interesting take on things, I suppose. Absorbing sound and converting it into physical prowess. My main concern on this ability though, is how often is he exposed to such loud noises? Does he carry something with him that will help him transform when it is needed? His “Howler monkey” ability. Is there an actual point to that, or is it something to try to make him more intimidating? That is what I am getting out of it, that you'll run into this crazy guy that will be howling at the top of his lungs. I'm alright with it I suppose, it just seems like an odd addition to me. 2. Considering his personality and his inexperience at controlling his ability, I think that a better place to start him is not with the Legacy Squad. The Legacy Squad are basically younger people who could step up and be X-men. They fill in when needed with the main team, and they act as a team that can respond to situations if the primary team is not available. That means that the members of the Legacy Squad, though they are young or inexperienced in the field, have a good handle on their abilities. Since Otto is fresh off the bus at Xaviers, I don't think they would throw him right onto a team. He would obviously need some work and training in how to control his abilities. Let's take Wolverine for example. He is a killing machine, that is what he was bred to do by Weapon X. But he has reached a point in his mental and physical conditioning that he can control this and use it to benefit the X-men. If Kongcerto goes ape-shit (haha) and put into a state where he can not recognize friend from foe, then obviously that is a concern for his own team. I can't see the X-men throwing him out there like that. So I think he should be a student if you choose to bring him to Xavier's. This doesn't necessarily put him in classes like a kid or even a college kid, it puts him into training with his abilities. Which really, that could be interesting for you to develop and play out should you want to. Plus if he is a high school drop out, he could get his GED. 3. His history. What I said above kind of plays into this, but I feel like the X-men would be very careful with letting a man who just got out of prison into their school. I'm not saying that they wouldn't do it, they have helped people like that plenty of times, and really, Otto has more to fear from them than they do from him. But again, I don't think they would throw him onto one of their teams without proper training and ensuring that he won't go crazy and try to harm their own people. Your history isn't very detailed during the events of the Apocalypse, Skrulls, and Illuminati and I understand that he was in prison so he did not take a large part of it. I would still like for you to add a little more detail to show that you are aware of what exactly went on during these times. A world changing even such as Apocalypse should take up more than one paragraph, and you edited the application template so that you can summarize all the rest in one chunk. Fix the template back and edit is appropriately, please. The point of the history is not only to show what your character was doing, but to show that you have a good grasp of this site. You say
And that makes me think that you think that the Illuminati was one super villain, not to mention you summarized a plot of that size into one sentence. Fix the template back and flesh it out a little more, please. With all that said, I don't think that you are too bad of a writer or that this app is bad.. You use punctuation right and you spell good, so that's always a plus. On top of that, I think that Kongcerto could be an interesting character if you handle him the right way. My main concern is that I don't think he will walk into Xavier's and thrown onto the Legacy Squad. You may want to consider giving him a way to transform himself, in the future, once he gets a better control of his abilities. And you also may want to consider making him an “Other,” since you have him living in Brooklyn at the moment. Others are hard to play at times, because they don't have the faction that they can just join things in. However, Others also provides a character with a lot more freedom and you can interact with anyone in New York or other places. It is just a thought, and if you want him at the school I'm sure that can be worked out too. Again, thanks for applying to XMR! Make the few changes that I have given you, explain a few things a bit better, and reply here when you are finished. Thanks! |

Hello Songbird, Thanks for the feedback! I went ahead and made the changes. I agree that he will be better as a student, and am excited to play him as such. In order to make the transition from Other to X-Men: Student, I fleshed out the role-play sample and history to justify his coming to the school. I emphasized the power of the howl in conjuring fear and misidentification as a large predator. If you are leaning towards doing away with it, I am fine with complying. Also, I fleshed out the history in regards to site-wide plots, making Otto have a more personal connection to these events that he will carry with him throughout his life (namely death of mother and brother). Let me know if this still is insufficient. I look forward to your next feedback. |

This looks much better. One thing that I feel the need to add is that when writing on XMR, we do not bold or color what the character is saying. It isn't such a big deal in the app since you probably didn't know that until now, but when you are accepted and begin to write posts keep it in mind. The only other thing I can think of is to remind you that if your character comes to the school and starts acting crazy while under the influence of sound or other means, then he probably isn't going to have a good time. I doubt we'll have a big problem with it, since folks at the school will be working with him to help him control his abilities. All that said, another staff member needs to review this application. He or she may give you other things to change that I may have overlooked or they may have an issue with something that I did not. You need two stamps to be accepted. Here is one. :) [S T A M P] |

Thanks for complying so far with staff, as it helps the process along. I do have a couple of points to address with you, but most things have already been covered so I'll keep it brief. Mostly, it's the personality. I understand you want to play out him reforming and improving himself, but he reads as mentally ill to be perfectly honest and the way you present it is a little concerning. Perhaps it's just a case of wording in several areas, but he does not sound like a good fit for the X-men or even a safe person to be around.
This especially concerns me. We actually have a ban on mental illness, unless it can be presented with accuracy, understanding and respect. I am not trying to suggest you're being intentionally disrespectful, but think about keeping this element in the app very carefully as we do not want to ever see it become a character quirk or a reason to be angry and broody etc. Having it means playing it for the long term. If you want to discuss this, please contact me and I will help you out, but I want you to think about this very carefully and try and tone down the 'crazy' to something more functional where he won't be potentially unsafe at the drop of a hat. |

I agree with both your sentiments about the risks of his personality, and made the appropriate edits. I believe that these changes make the psychosis much more of a personal challenge, and at most just an inconvenience to others, as opposed to posing a possible risk to teammates and members of the school. In short, the mania makes him experience delusional paranoia and hallucinations, but the latter of which is not to the point where he would mistake an ally for an enemy. Please let me know if this is clear enough in the app. I would like to keep the psychosis as a facet of the character, as I think it offers an interesting challenge to his development, and to those working with him. It will also serve as a wild card, as some experiences of grandiosity might very much enhance his performance under the right circumstances where fearlessness is rewarded. Likewise, there is a chance that when the mania drives him to a more paranoid nature, that extra precaution is indeed strategic in given situations. If you believe that this trait is too close to the mental disorder ban, then I can make the appropriate changes. (Btw, Besty, have you been able to receive my PMs? I've sent a few over the past couple of days. but they aren't showing up in my sent folder). Also, I do not plan for him to enter this state often, and the buffering headphones he will readily have on him will prevent it in most cases. I like the idea that if he wants to achieve max strength and durability, he needs to roll the dice and see where his psyche takes him. I look forward to your suggestions. |

Seeing as you don't see him fitting in at Xavier's, I changed his affiliation to Others, with hopes that he may be recruited by the Brotherhood in the future. I'd rather go that direction than change his personality any further and lose what makes him unique. |

I believe I have made substantial changes to his personality and powers. He no longer enters a psychotic state, but rather one of increased rage. This still can be considered a weakness as he loses some control to aggressive overreaction. I also fleshed out his personality, so that there is a more thorough representation and not one centered on paranoia. I still wanted there to be some semblance of his cautious, suspicious nature though. I also wanted to diversify his superhuman strength a bit, so added a paragraph that emphasizes his strong hands and wrists which give him exceptional ability to pull and grip things. Also, there are minor morphological changes that make this more effective (increased finger length). I believe the way he is structured now leaves him open to both X-Men and Brotherhood in the future. If you think it is better to have him start in one or the other, as opposed to starting as Others, I appreciate the feedback. I would prefer Xavier's, and I think the personality changes would make this work. His rage state won't be any more severe or out of control from X-Men like Wolverine. I also think its now presented in a way where there are less obstacles to achieve levels of control that would make him capable of serving the Legacy Squad at some point, and maybe the X-Men one day. |

This is better now and any remaining fuzzy areas will be smoothed out through the trial of playing in game and interacting with people in the world of the game. Please post in the List Updater and bear in mind what I told you about recruitment as I am placing you in Others until you decide what direction you want to take Otto in. [A P P R O V E D] |
