PLAYER INFORMATION NAME: Jon CONTACT: PM’s, AIM: jaijaigrntsd287 and Skype: lynx_lover1 HOW YOU FOUND US: Through a want ad on Shine OTHER CHARACTERS ON THE SITE None RULES CODE: Blackbird CREDIT WHERE IT'S DUE: N/A CHARACTER INFORMATION BASIC INFORMATION CANON OR ORIGINAL: Original AFFILIATION: X-Student, X-Men FULL NAME: Justin Andrew Grant CODENAME: High-Five NICKNAMES: Jus, TinTin, Tinman, Bookworm, CURRENT AGE: 17 DATE OF BIRTH: June 16th, 1996 MARITAL STATUS: Single SEXUAL ORIENTATION: Bisexual BASE OF OPERATIONS: Xavier Institute TIME AT INSTITUTE: A year REGISTERED WITH SHIELD? No HOMETOWN: Formerly, Golders Green, England. Currently, Claremount, Los Angeles, California, America KNOWN RELATIVES: David (father), Lisa (mother), Terri (older sister), Matthias (younger brother) and Peter, Anteros and Iris (younger triplet siblings) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE HEIGHT: Five foot ten BUILD: Athletic/Muscular EYES: Green HAIR: Light brown DISTINGUISHING MARKS: Old, faded bruises and cuts from when his mum abused him CLOTHING STYLE: Clothes-wise, Justin tends to wear t-shirts and hoodies, coupled with jeans and white Adidas trainers. He doesn’t believe in dressing up in smart clothes and will only do so if there is a special event i.e. a wedding etc. He has a friendship bracelet on his right hand that a friend gave him and a necklace, resembling a dog tag. On one side it has a phoenix engraved on it and on the other side, the words: “Singing is the key to happiness” are engraved onto it. UNIFORM: Standard training uniform POWERS GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Handprinting: Handprint is able to produce handprints that cause a variety of effects; these manipulate physical feelings. The handprints appear like the ones that parents have to clean from the walls when their children have been up to no good. He is able to “handprint” physical sensations, such as hot and cold. At the moment, he can only produce three handprints but will be able to produce more with further training. The victim’s susceptibility to the handprint is based on how strong their immune system is and how fit they are as a person. The handprints he can produce so far are: Yellow: Paralysis. When slapped by the yellow handprint, the person feels like they’ve been hit by a high-voltage Taser. They will convulse when standing and then continue to convulse for about five seconds before becoming limp. There will be yellow electricity currents running all over that body; it’s a side effect of the handprint. If anyone touches them while the victim is still paralysed then they too will become paralysed but to a lesser degree. Red: When slapped with the red handprint, the person will feel like they’ve been induced with extreme heat. First, they will experience heat stress then heat fatigue will occur. When the fatigue occurs; symptoms will include the skin being cool, moist and there will be a weakened pulse. Afterwards, heat syncope (sudden dizziness and the skin appears pale and sweaty but is generally moist and cool. The pulse is weakened and the heart rate is rapid) followed by heat cramps (painful muscle spasms in the abdomen and arms) will happen. Blue: when slapped with the blue handprint, the victim will be induced with extreme cold. First, they will start to shiver, followed by tiredness and low energy. After that, the victim will a have cold or pale face. Next, they will start to hyperventilate and will be unable to think or pay attention. The last symptom will have a loss of judgement and reasoning and difficulty moving around. The handprints' affects are quite potent and the victim will often feel like they've been stung by a bee when first slapped. This is then replaced by the respective sensation, which tends to last for about three to five minutes before wearing off. If physical contact is held for more than five minutes, the affects will be lethal. The victim will be at the height of respective affect when slapped and will be often be on the floor. When the victim does recover, after five minutes, it will be as if the sensation never happened but they will be shaken. At the moment, Justin has to consciously think about the colour but with training, he will be able to just think of the colour quickly and it’ll happen. The handprints will stay on the person during the effect. Fortunately for Justin, he is immune to his own powers. If his powers were turned against him, his system just seems to absorb the handprints. With further training, Justin will be able to produce five more handprints, and the effects could last longer. In time, he could be able to get to the point where he no longer needs to have the gloves. Future Handprints Lime Green: Sick. When slapped with this handprint, the victim will begin to feel unwell; headache, upset stomach and slight blurred vision. Next, they will feel nauseous and dizzy. Their breathing will become laboured and they will need to sit down, to stop them from falling over or vomiting. The downside to this is that this handprint will only last three minutes and the potency won’t be as strong as the original three handprints. Mutants with healing factors and speedsters can shake this off within seconds. Also, it won’t work on a mutant who has a skin changing mutation or skinless mutants, such as Colossus, Iceman, Mercury and Sack; the reasons for this is because their other skin or their skinless skin expels the handprint’s effects. Midnight Blue: This handprint will make the victim feel drowsy and then fall asleep. Although his handprint is potent, it’s quite easy to shake the effects off. Again mutants with healing factors and speedsters can shake this. Other ways to shake this handprint off are by shaking the victim awake, punching them or splashing them with water. White: This handprint will make the victim blind temporarily. The affect is instantaneous and will feel like they’ve been injected with morphine. Blindness will last for five minutes. After that duration of time has ended, their vision will first be blurry and then will come back within a few seconds. Purple: When hit with this handprint, the victim will first feel like they’ve been hit by a brick then they will look dazed and confused. They will not know what is going on, questioning everything, and will need to be told several times. They will be confused for a period of five minutes. Beige: When hit with this handprint, the victim will instantly stop what they were doing and forget everything bar their motor skills etc, so basically they’ll become amnesiac. In this state, they are highly susceptible to being fed false information and doing things they wouldn’t usually do. This can be stopped by showing the victim photos or items that will help jog their memory. If uninterrupted, the victim will be amnesiac for five minutes. WEAKNESS: Justin's handprints only tend to work for twenty minutes before the power has to be recharged, like a dead battery, which takes five minutes. Due to the nature of his abilities, Justin has taken to wearing gloves, as a coping mechanism. He has to touch his victim in order for the power to work. Touching clothes won’t work so Justin has to make he has skin-to-skin contact. and he has to touch actual flesh for it to work. One thing he has noticed is that even if he doesn’t slap his victim but rather punches them or puts a finger on their skin, the handprint will still work, so the slightest touch can set the effect off. Justin is unable to "handprint" emotional responses and also unable to "handprint" on walls or floors. Additionally, he is unable to handprint a mutant who has a skin changing mutation or skinless mutants, such as Colossus, Iceman, Mercury and Sack; the reasons for this is because their other skin or their skinless skin expels the handprint’s effects. His powers will also not work on mutants, who have powers that will work against his own, such as Pyro or Iceman, or mutants that have the same powers. Aliens aren't affected by the handprints, due to their respective physiology. Their systems seem to expel the toxins before they can do any real damage. PERSONALITY Upon meeting Justin, you'll see that he's rather shy but he'll be himself after a period of time. He's really friendly and likes to make new friends. When with friends, he can have a laugh and tease his friends but knowing his limits. Justin is usually the one who people go to for advice, waiting to hear the person’s problems before giving out his advice. Justin is a bit of daydreamer, often daydreaming when he is in class or with friends. This stems from the fact that he read a lot as a child (and still does) and would often daydream about being involved in the story. Also stemming from the reading, Justin gained a passion for storytelling/writing. He can sometimes be found reading or writing where there is not much noise. He is also a fast learner. Having cerebral palsy makes him feel inadequate at times and so subsequently he has gained a mild to medium case of an inferiority complex, which causes him to have days where he’s a little quieter and little antisocial. Usually though, these only last about a day. When under pressure or in a stressful situation, Justin will often be quiet, which will cause people to wonder if he’s having a silent mental breakdown, but in reality, he’s actually trying to assess the best way to get out of a situation. Despite his daydreaming, he is quite observant, often seeing or hearing things that others tend to miss; this trait led him to become adept at eavesdropping, which has led him to discover secrets about various things. If Justin likes someone, he'll be shy and awkward around them until he professes his love for them, which probably will take him a few days to do. When he does date someone, he'll be a faithful and attentive boyfriend that will try to understand their worries and problems, allowing them to vent. If his boyfriend or girlfriend is in trouble, then Justin will stand by them. Justin's enemies better beware of his rage. He's a cold as ice when dealing with enemies. If one of his enemies has harmed one of his loved ones, then he'll track them down and make them pay for what they've done. HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE Justin was born second out of six kids, three of which were triplets to David and Lisa Grant, the latter being a mutant secretly. The family came from London, of which his Dad was a policeman and his Mum was a receptionist in a hotel. During the birth, there were naturally complications; a caesarean was necessary, Justin was born with cerebral palsy. Unfortunately, his mother didn’t see him for three days and then had to stay in an incubator for six months. After this, he had to have an operation to stop from vomiting his food; which happened every time he had some of his mum’s milk. It would ensure that he’d be able to eat but it was dangerous; as he wouldn’t be able to vomit ever again. From an early age, Justin’s English parents had discussed moving to California, America but had to wait until Justin was able to travel. David ultimately chose to move (Justin was four when this happened). Terri, his older sister, showed great dislike for the move and would sulk for days on end, however that soon passed. Justin gained triplet siblings six months after the move. As a child, Justin had to have numerous operations, some of which were follow-up operations from when he was an infant and a toddler. Justin gained a physiotherapist and speech therapist when he was five. He hated the therapy and would flat out refuse to do it, unless he was promised a story afterwards, or a trip to a museum. Justin developed his passion for reading and writing three years later when he began to read the Road Dahl books. He also joined the school’s gymnastics team, so he could boost his confidence and gain friendships, which then led him to look into and pursue acrobatics. He also joined an ASL class, since he had a deaf friend. He found himself to be a natural at these three. The disabled boy then discovered that he was unable to smell and told his family. The reason for Justin being unable to smell was never looked into but the family accepted this and moved on. The disabled managed to get a short story of published in a book of short stories by young authors when he was nine. See, the school was taking part in this competition and due to his creativity and excellent writing, Justin was one of six students to win. DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009) During Apocalypse, Justin and the rest of his school peers were out of school He spent the time with his family, however things soon returned to normal, so Justin returned to school. It was this point that Justin was told that his mother was a mutant. His father, shocked by the news that his wife was a mutant and needing time to process this by himself, left the family to go stay in a motel. When this happened, Justin’s mother took it hard and fell into a deep depression, becoming like a zombie; there but very spacey. There were times when she had to be forced out of bed and had to be literally fed. When the earthquakes, happened, Terri and Justin went to try and help people; doing what they could. They couldn’t rely on their mum; she was still in zombie-mode. Justin watched the news every day and thought about how many people were being killed by these very powerful mutants. He hadn’t thought about mutants until now. He didn’t mind mutants, to him they were like anyone else. Why should they be treated differently just because they had powers; besides isn’t that what people dreamed about, to have powers? Those that did kill were making a bad name for the mutant race, Justin thought. POST-APOCALYPSE After the Apocalypse, Justin’s father returned and divorced their mother, deciding that his mother’s revealed secret was too much to bear. He took Matthias and the triplets with him. His mother got custody of Terri and Justin. Sometime later, Justin had an operation to remove seven teeth, as his mouth was becoming overcrowded with teeth. It should also be noted that he has two rows of teeth, another mystery. The doctors say it’s a mutation in the mouth that he had but that it’s not dangerous so he shouldn’t worry. When he had seen the X-Men defeating Apocalypse, he began adopting a more positive view on them. How dare people treat them as freaks and different just because they had superhuman powers that people only dreamed of having. Seriously, shouldn’t people be awe-inspired by them? He didn’t understand people. From that day on, Justin Grant became more pro-mutant. PURIFIERS When the Purifiers made themselves known, Justin was on the side of the mutants; in his mind, they were still people. He found the Purifiers evil and wanted to help the mutants but saw how brutal they could be to mutant supporters. His mother was so angry with what the Purifiers were doing that she was roused from her depression and basically trashed the garden and her bedroom. She even went to a pro-mutant rally and then a protest, putting on a balaclava to mask her face. She displayed her power to generate black, spiky, organic vines from her pores, which she used on some of the Purifiers, taking out ten of them. Although Justin was glad his mother was actually doing daily events, he was worried that His friends didn’t know of his views and Justin refused to participate in any rallies etc. his friends did wonder why Justin didn’t participate with them, and when asked to go, he simply shrugged and walked off. SKRULLS During the Skrulls’ invasion, the disabled boy was yet another bystander. He watched as the world was again turned upside down. The disabled kid was a little unsure of what to think about the alien invasion and subsequently had mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, he was extremely worried about the invasion and had a very imaginative daydream about being their slave, and on the other, was so excited that there were aliens out there. One day, He was suddenly convinced that the Skrulls were the saviours of the Earth. This conviction lasted until they were defeated. CURRENT HISTORY A few days after his seventeenth birthday, Justin’s powers manifested. Someone had sent out a directive to kill anyone with a power, which included his mother. He was coming home from school one day when he heard screams and crashes. Curious, he rushed inside and saw his mother being attacked. For a moment, the mute froze, unsure of what to do. He then dove into action; using his acrobatics to his advantage, however it wasn’t enough and pretty soon, both mother and son were backed into a corner. Justin wished to protect his mother very much, so without thinking, he rushed forward and slapped the person. The slap resulted in his power emerging; a yellow handprint appeared. The person convulsed before going limp. He was about to slap the other person but he ran off. His mother disposed of the limp guy by putting him in the nearest dumpster. She was so proud and pleased to have a mutant for a son, and was very grateful that he protected her. For the next few months, she showed him how to use his powers, by getting him to do breathing exercises and focus control techniques. She even suggested meditation at times. His mother suggested he test his powers on petty criminals, which Justin was a little ambivalent about, but ultimately did so two times. The experience was a rush for the disabled mutant but he was still a little lost when it came to his powers. He had to wear gloves, since he didn’t know how to control his powers. On January 1st, the disabled mutant was in total disbelief when the Sub-Mariner attacked New York City with an aquatic army and a giant monster. He thought Sub-Mariner was an alright guy, and besides wasn’t he an ally of the famous Captain America? He didn’t get it, why would he do this? Justin watched from his home as reports from the TV showed the devastation of the attack. February 1st saw Justin watch the Xavier Institute open with a press conference and a declaration that as they were left in peace, they were there for peaceful reasons. Later on, Justin again watched terrified and helplessly as Spiral, a multi-armed mad scientist, released her madbombs on three major cities; driving people to having extreme feelings, such as rage, lust and despair, which resulted in much rioting and destruction. Justin’s thoughts were with the poor people. He was relieved when Spiral was thwarted but in March, was again saddened to hear that Cyclops had been murdered. His thoughts went out to the poor staff and students of the Xavier Institute. In April, he was shocked to learn that not only was Cyclops alive but that he was in the service of the Hand Cult. It wasn’t just him, though, it was various other mutants too. His mother, a fan of the X-Men (and fancying Scott somewhat) was devastated by this. Her faith in X-Men, particularly Cyclops, diminished. April would also be when the mad scientist, Spiral appeared, in the form of a Youtube video, demanding the heads of superheroes; thankfully nothing came to be pass. At least Justin didn’t think so. On May 25th, one of the Xavier Institute staff members came and spoke to Justin and his mother. They agreed that he should go to the Institute. Unfortunately, Justin came to the Institute in a time of tremendous turmoil, what with the kidnappings and killings. In June/July, the abducted mutants, going by the name of the Dark X-Men began terrorist operations against various anti-mutant targets that cultimated in the use of a weapon that forced mutations on ordinary humans. The Dark X-Men then attacked the school in August. He was so worried about what was happening, and was seriously considering running away. Along with the other non-combative students, Justin was put somewhere safe. Luckily they were defeated and Xavier was recovered. Later in August, the world is covered in Darkforce by Max Coleridge. He didn’t cope well in the dark, (he still doesn’t) and needed constant reassurances. There was no time to rest, as the Phoenix emerged. Justin was at a loss of what to do but he did what he could to help his fellow students. A year later, Justin is still at the Institute, and is slowly getting used to the Institute and whatnot. He is still afraid of Scott and pities those who were forcibly mutated on. The events haven’t deterred Justin though; he wishes to be an X-Man but is a little ambivalent on what he may need to do and who he might lose to achieve that goal. SAMPLE RP POST: “Justin! Justin! Where are you?” cried Terri. He looked out of his bedroom and smiled, which earned him a smile back. “Wanna come watch a movie with me and the guys?” The guys being her friends. Justin thought about it before he heard movement from his mother’s room. He nodded quickly and swiftly ran out of the house with Terri. He knew that once his mother woke up, she would just be a zombie; she didn’t do anything anymore, just lay in bed or sat on the sofa. He sighed as he thought about his dear, beloved mother. If only his father hadn’t been a jerk and left them, his mother would be how she was before; loving and kind. They went to cinema and saw a movie that Justin cannot remember, since it was so boring. After that, they went to have something to eat. He had the best time he’d had in a long time, and he wasn’t getting beat up for having fun. They went all over the place and even managed to get into a nightclub (how they did it, Justin doesn’t know, he’s just thankful they got in). Seeing as how it was Justin’s first time in a nightclub he was pretty awe-struck by the sheer amount of people there; their bodies so close together that it sometimes looked like two people were actually one person. The lights and the music were simply too amazing; it was just….mind blowing. He was so in awe that the disabled kid spent five minutes ogling the scene. A light tap on the shoulder brought him out of his stupor and Justin saw Terri hold out a glass to her younger brother. “Here’s to a good night, TinTin.” He gave a small smile, taking the drink and then taking a sip. The drink was really was ok; it was a little fizzy but Justin didn’t mind that. When he asked what it was, the answer came back as vodka and coke. He nodded, digesting this new piece of info. The rest of night passed and the once quiet bookworm became like a bird after it’s been released from captivity; with his true, fun, exciting self showing through. Come morning though, he wasn’t able to remember what had happened, or where he was, for that matter. His head was killing him and he wanted to vomit but knew that he wouldn’t be able to. His sister came into view and gave him a smile. She then gave him some water, which he greedily drank. They soon left for home, after having some breakfast. No doubt their mother would be furious but Justin didn’t care; he was just happy that he’d gone out last night. “Hey, thanks for inviting me.” “No worries, dude.” “Terri, I love you.” “Love you, Justin.” Note: Spoke to Steve about having a disability and she OK'd it |

Hey, Jon, really quick. This app isn't bad, but we really need to know what all 7 handprints will be before we can allow the potential for that many, and there needs to be limits and such. Once you've put in all seven effects, and their specs, you'll get a full length review. Thanks so much |

OK, Hi, sorry this has taken some time. You're pretty good up until history, so we're going to focus mostly on that, after a couple tweaks to powers, which, by the way, are super interesting, so I want to see them in action. 1. How does he choose the color? Is it mental or instinctual? Does he have to consciously choose? 2. How long, how often, how fast? We need some numbers in here. Do the effects last minutes or hours? How quickly can he change colors? Are there any limits to how many times he can handprint in a row? Fix those things and I think I'll be good on powers. History however is a mess. Pre-Apocalypse: This is ok, I guess. It smacks a little too much of perhaps your own experiences, but ok, I'm not going to call you on that. It's a little sparse though so maybe think a little more on his life. During Apocalypse: Why were the kids out of school in the middle of April? Once the attacks happened, I can see concern, but there was a week of nothing between the Horsemen attacks (none of which hit California) and the activation of the Eye of Horus, which caused the quakes along the Pacific Rim area. His mother is a mutant, and reveals it now, ok, but what is her power (besides terrifying)? Also, one does not become an alcoholic in seven days. One can be drunk that whole time, but it takes longer than that to fully become dependent on alcohol. Why did his father leave his kids with a terrifying mutant who beat them? When the earthquakes started, did he not care about them? Did he try to get to them? What did his mother do? Did she just say 'eh, they're humans, let them die?' Post Apocalypse: Why does he have double rows of teeth? Purifiers: What do Justin's friends think about the Purifiers? Do they know he is Pro-Mutant? Does he involve himself in any anti-Purifier rallies or discussions? Does he know anyone who is pro-Purifier? What does he think about that? Why is no one protecting Justin and his sister from the abusive mom if she's that bad? Why didn't the dad take everyone? Skrull: When the Skrull activate the Complacency Wave, Justin and everyone else he knows who doesn't have a telepathic immunity, would suddenly believe the Skrull are their saviors and the world will be better for them all now that they are here. Life went on the way it was supposed to with people going to school and work, but everyone was happier, everyone was calmer, no one fought, or argued. Did Justin's mom calm down? Did she love her children again? Once again, you mention the mother's power, and now it's not terrifying it's fascinating. What is the power? We need to know. Current History: His father's attempt to kidnap the children seems implausible because at this point, why wouldn't they just say, "yeah, tired of being hit, see ya mom" and go with him. It seems to be pretty contrived drama just to give Justin a reason to manifest his power. Go back and read the history, especially starting with the events of January 2013. The Illuminati make themselves known and there are a lot of better opportunities to give him a chance to evolve. Spiral sends out a directive for people to kill people with superpowers. What if someone sees his mom's power and decides she has to die so that Spiral won't kill them all and Justin manifests to protect her? You need to mention the events of last year in the history, because they were worldwide and world changing. What about the Phoenix manifestations? What did his mother think about all this? What did she think about her son's powers? How was she able to train him if her powers are so different? Coming to the school just before the Dark X-Men attacks is fine, and he would be put in the safe rooms with the others, but what does he think now that the people who attacked the school are apparently free to walk around it now? Does Scott scare him when he sees him in the halls? Does he know any of the kids who were forcibly mutated who now attend the school? Does he want to be an X-Man after this or is it too scary? I know this seems a lot, but it really isn't, it's just ONE section that needs some working on. Go into the cbox and ask the staff, or ping us on AIM or through PMs. We'll help you. |

Ok, you still have some weirdness in the bio, but I think that will be worked out in game. Some of the details have an odd specificity that makes me worry this might be getting a little Mary Sue-ish (the phoenix pendant, the publishing a short story, the no sense of smell, double rows of teeth) but I'm going to let those slide as well because frankly I don't see much harm in them. I'll give you your first Stamp. You need another stamp to be approved and another mod may want changes that I didn't require. Don't worry though, we'll get you through this. [S T A M P] |

I have to say, I agree with Havok. You're borderline very Sue-ish in a lot of the history here, but as long as you're not going to continue dropping things like this into his time in game, then we can let it slide so you can get used to the site and how we generally present characters. However, I think you need to learn to get used to the site rather than adding/changing things through the history. Avoid tossing in things 'just because' or adding details like the fact he has no sense of smell but that's never checked (even though given his medical background that would not be ignored...) Instead think about things in terms of when? where? why? who? what? etc. What will a plot result in, who will it affect? Why would someone feel the way they do, or go where they are heading, etc. This is just advice, but please consider it carefully. If you need help in game, talk to staff. |
