Another day of instruction had come to a close and Rahne Russell was really beginning to regret her policy of being stubborn to a fault. She felt absolutely immense, standing up for extended periods of time had become enough of a hassle that she resorted to teaching the class from her desk chair, wheeled around to the front of the class. She was getting to the point that she was really wishing she had opted to start maternity leave, but nooooo, she just had to be all "I'll wait until I've popped him out".

Suppose that's what I get f'r bein' true t' muh word. Good goin', Rahne, she thought to herself as she reclined in her chair, the class having let out a good while ago at this point. She could have gotten up and gone back home, but she was not particularly interested in walking at this point.

Thank God for the classroom assistants, though. Having at least two on hand at any moment took a lot of the strain off of her shoulders and allowed her to rest when she needed it.

She glanced over to the cellphone on her desk, contemplating it for a moment. Maybe she could just call Jack up and have him come over and carry her home. It wasn't like he wouldn't do it, she figured. Or that he'd have any trouble with it. He could toss around cars if he wanted to. Surely, his severely pregnant wife (whose condition he was responsible for) would be no problem. Hell, he'd probably be able to carry a whole bunch of her if that was at all possible.

A part of her felt guilty over feeling grouchy like this. It wasn't entirely his fault. It was hers too. Even though they had agreed way back when that they weren't ready, she wanted this. And she knew that he did too.

Was it too much to ask, though, for it to not have happened this quickly and this abruptly? She should have at most been only halfway through, not all the way to the end by now.

"Augh," she groaned, glancing over to the mini-fridge that sat a little too far out of reach at this moment. Oh, the dilemma of wanting a bottle of water, but not wanting to stand up and go get one.

She knew she had to try,
and she float back down to the warm soft ground,
laughing - she don't know why,
but she had to try, she had to try.

It had been another day at the Institute, and the student known as Justin Grant was having one or his off-days. For once though, it wasn’t about his disability; it was….well, he didn’t know why he was feeling this way, actually. It was just an off day, he supposed. The brunette sighed and decided to take a walk around the school; he’d finished his homework and he was done with classes for the day, so he figured he may as well. He would’ve texted his friends, to see if they wanted to hang out but he didn’t know where they were. Ah well, it was nice to be by yourself at times. He didn’t have any destination in mind; he just wanted to take a walk around school.

Before long the young mutant had gone from being in the Student Dorm building to the First Floor of the Xavier Institute. With no clue as to how he got here without being hit by a mutant power or hitting a wall, Justin decided that it’d be best to actually pay attention to where he was going from now on. It was a good thing that the young mutant was now paying attention to the area around him otherwise he may have needed to go to the Infirmary, as several students stampeded past him to go to the living room. Thankfully, he’d grabbed the bottom banister of the stairs for support.

“Watch it, jerks!”

Sometimes it seemed that the students of the Xavier Institute were going to go Lord of the Flies and start killing each other for the best-looking boyfriend or the best spot on the living room and whatnot. He even doubted the staff would be able to stop the carnage if it did happen. They never did, obviously but Justin suspected that it was only a matter of time before someone got severely injured. Prom was the worst too, since the girls of the school all seemed to unite and prowl the school for dates. It was really terrifying. Sighing, the brunette went upstairs to the First Floor. Justin figured that the staff were likely teaching or somewhere, judging by the number of empty offices. Some of the students had decided to use the Cafetorium as their personal hang out spots. To be fair, it was a good place to socialise and do homework with friends; also to read when it was a little quieter, though he preferred being in the library when it came to reading. It just seemed more…appropriate in a way.

The brunette then came across the Elementary Classrooms. Justin smiled as he thought about what it’d be like if he’d been here when he was younger. Would he have enjoyed it here? Would he have been bullied? He shrugged as he mentally asked the second question; he probably would have. Kids could be so cruel, and believe it or not, they were good at manipulating people into feeling guilty and getting them to do what they wanted. it was really surprising, when you actually thought about it.

He’d passed a classroom when he saw a very familiar face. He hadn’t seen Miss Russell in a very long time; probably due to the both of them being busy and whatnot. She looked worn out. Being pregnant while teaching must have been exhausting. Justin figured he’d say hi. It’d be nice to catch up, plus he now wanted some company.

“Hey, Miss Russell, long time no see!” he said as he stood by the door. “You look beat, need anything?”

One eye peeled open, and then the next, as Justin stepped into the room. Not one of her students, no, but she had, not all too long ago, helped in getting him here. Helped in getting his parents to see the good this school could do for their son. That was a nice change of pace. So many times did they bring a student in who had nowhere else to go. Who all but had to come to the school or face life on the streets, or life in an abusive home because parents didn't understand what their child was.

"Hullo, Justin," she said with a small, tired smile on her face and a lazy, thumping wag of her tail that strung through the back of her seat.

"Actually, ye most certainly can," she said with a slight chuckle, pointing a clawed finger to the mini-fridge between her desk and the back wall. "I'm parched. If'n ye grab a Dasani f'r me, I'll be more 'n glad t' let ye grab one f'r yuirself. Fair deal?"

On some level, she felt some shame, she supposed, for asking for such a silly favor. It really felt like something she should have been self-reliant enough to do all on her own, especially since she fancied herself a very self-reliant woman who didn't need other people to do things like fetch her a drink of water.

"What brings ye my way, out o' curiosity?"

Justin smiled and chuckled when the Scottish teacher she did need help. He figured she did; she just looked so pooped. He wondered why she wasn’t on maternity leave or something, surely the Institute had other Elementary teachers. The mutant with the handprinting effects felt a little sorry for the teacher, though Rahne was stubborn so she probably had herself to blame. Ah well, he pregnancy would soon be over, anyway and there’d be a new addition to the school. Justin was excited in all honesty. Having another Institute-born kid (the other being Pearl) meant that the mutant race was going to keep on fighting; fighting to be accepted and fighting to stay alive.

“Sounds like a fair deal, and thanks.”

The brunette went to the mini-fridge and took out two bottles. He put one on the table, next to Rahne and sat on the floor, by the door. Justin looked around and smiled, thinking about all the young kids who were here. They were the future; the next generation who would hopefully pave the way for getting humanity and mutantkind to co-exist peacefully. There was already a baby in the Institute; Pearl Ford, daughter of Kevin Ford and Sarah Rushman. She was absolutely adorable. After seeing so many mutant students at the Institute, he hadn’t been fazed by her unusual appearance, when he had seen her. Now, there was to be another mutant baby coming to the school; he referring to Rahne’s baby, of course, unless there was another pregnant staff member that he didn’t know about. He didn’t think there was. The brunette mutant mentally shrugged and looked to the expecting mother-to-be, just as she was finishing her question.

“I’m…not sure; was just feeling a little sad for some reason. I don’t know why; it’s got nothing to do with my cerebral palsy, at all,” said Justin, who then sighed. He wasn’t sure why he had come here, to be honest. Maybe he just wanted some company and he wanted a familiar face.

“Oh, sorry for not coming to the baby shower, was doing homework. I did get the little dude a present though. I’ll give it to you later on.”

"Unm, thanks," Rahne grabbed onto the bottle, twisting the cap off with a fierce wrench, and guzzled down half the bottle with one gulp. With a deep breath, she set the bottle down on the desktop, and exhaled slowly. That felt good.

"Och, needed that," she sighed in relief, shaking her head. She looked over to Justin as he sat down on the floor and sipped from his own bottle. Didn't take a psychic to tell something was bothering him, nor did it take her superhumanly keen senses. His face, his body language - something was eating at him.

'Eh, s'nae so terribly uncommon t' feel a wee bit o' malaise," Rahne said, taking another gulp of water, leaving very little left in the bottle.

"So tell me about it, aye? Maybe we'll figure it out," Rahne said, nodding her head slowly. "Ye've been... gettin' along with yuir classmates? Havin' an alright time gettin' on with yuir mutant abilities? Girl troubles? Boy troubles?"

She shrugged her shoulders. The standard laundry list of possible causes of mysterious melancholy. Maybe just listing them off would trigger something, help him figure out just what was getting him that little bit down.

"Och, dinnae ye worry about that. 'Twas a rather small gathering anyway. Honest, ye dinnae miss all too much," she said with a smile and a nod of her head.

"I'd hope that missin' the party isn't what's got ye down," she said with a light chuckle. "So let's get t' the bottom of it."

“Oh, no; those reasons aren’t why I’m sad,” replied Justin when Rahne asked if the reason he was sad was because he missed the party. The brunette student tried to pinpoint what exactly was troubling him but was coming up short. Maybe listing off some of the usual teenaged issues would help, and since he had the Elementary School teacher to aid in his problem-solving, he was sure to get to the root of the problem. Rahne probably had to deal with a lot of similar problems like every day with her students.

“Well, every student has angst in some form or another, it’s pretty much how we’re made. It’s not a boy or a girl, though I do have a few crushes. Schoolwork is going alright. Wish I had more of a handle on my power; I still can’t touch people without harming them. That does get me down at times; to know I can never hold their hand, never touch their face,” said Justin in between sips of water. He was still bummed that he couldn’t touch people without hurting them. His powers were more destructive than beneficial, which the disabled X-Student didn’t like. The Danger Room sessions were just that much harder because he couldn’t use his powers on the digital drones.

“I guess I’m just having one of those sad days,” he said at last. The young man thought about it for a few more students before sniffing and clearing his throat. Wanting to change the subject, he asked the female teacher a question. “So, do you have a name for the little dude? This might be weird but I’m kind of excited for parenthood.”

"Hmm," Rahne said with a slight frown before she took another swig of her water. A detective she wasn't. A counselor she also wasn't. She could at best hear, listen, try to give advice, but overall, she just didn't have many of the tools one would truly need to get to the bottom of mystery teen angst. She wondered sometimes if anyone did.

"Well, I'd stay away from the word 'never', Justin," Rahne said as she readjusted herself in the seat with a grunt of effort. She felt utterly bloated and ridiculous like this - the sooner this was all said and done and finished, the better. "If it truly is possible t' get a handle on what ye've got, then ye'll get there. Ye'll learn, an' when ye do, ye'll be fine. Some of us just have a tougher time learning, is all. Some of us have greater challenges ahead of us. An' ye'll get past yuirs. I have every bit o' faith in ye."

Rahne's left eyebrow raised, and she tilted her head to the left. 'One of those sad days'. Vagueness and confusion. He either didn't know what was bothering him, or he didn't really want to divulge. Either way, there wasn't much that could be done.

"Gregory, for his gran'da. Jack's father. Kirk f'r a middle name 'cause I needed t' have some Scots in the poor lad," she said with a smirk. "So... ye're excited f'r you bein' a parent, or me? 'Cause unless there's somethin' goin' on that I dinnae know about, I'd like t' think ye've got a long time ahead of ye for that. Time t' be a teenager an' do all the teenagery things that teenagers do."

Rahne's eyes widened, and an open-mouthed smile spread across her face as she lifted her right index finger in realization.
"Maybe that's it. Maybe ye've got t' get involved, engage in extracurricular activities an' just... socialize. Ye like chess? We've got a chess club. Intramural football - an' I do mean football, the real football, nae that American bastardization with the helmets an' the shoulderpads. Find somethin' ye're interested in an' join in, aye?"
