March 3rd; 7 am

Evvy dressed simply in white and pale green for her time down in the infirmary. She wasn't always needed down there, but since Rahne was down there with the baby she figured they could use a hand. If not, some company. And more than either of those, some breakfast. She'd volunteered for that duty the day before, after finding out the baby had arrived and that Rahne would be staying down in the infirmary for a few days.

The younger of the mansion's botanic manipulators carried a tray down to the sub-basement, balancing everything carefully. She'd overdone it again. A small pitcher of orange juice, one of milk, another of water, glasses, besides a big plate of eggs, bacon, sausages, and pancakes with syrup on the side. And a little bowl of yogurt with fruit and granola.

When she finally reached the door to the infirmary she frowned at it for a few moments before she finally managed to open it with her hip. So she entered the room backwards, holding the laden tray firmly.

"Good morning Mrs Russell," she said cheerfully when she saw the new mother was awake. "I hope you're feeling hungry. I brought down half the kitchen," she joked as she set the tray down on a table that could extend over the bed so a patient could eat while propped up in bed.

Rahne knew she was going to fall in love with this baby. She knew that from the very beginning, after she'd gotten over the initial shock of finding out that she was going to have a baby to begin with. She knew he was going to be the light of her life, the most important part of her day - she just hadn't been prepared for just how much, how hard, she was going to fall.

He had woken up an hour ago, crying - that sharp, sucking sort of cry that indicated he was hungry. And she had done her due diligence, breastfeeding him until he had had his fill. Breastfeeding was an odd experience to say the least, but it was important and it had to be done. She didn't entirely dislike it, per se - it wasn't particularly painful, and honestly, sometimes it was a bit of a relief, to get some pressure out, but it was still an odd experience.

Greg had finished and nodded off to sleep, but she still held him, just... watching him. He was so beautiful, serene and peaceful in sleep with the occasional twitch of a limb being all that there was to disrupt his quiet. She knew before too long, it would get much more difficult - but in these moments, with her baby asleep in her arms, she felt at peace with everything.

The bump of the door being pushed open brought her attention to it and in came Evvy, backside first to drag a food delivery tray in with her. Rahne smiled.

"'Tis alright t' call me 'Rahne', Evvy. I'll nae take objection to it," she spoke softly, watching the tray as she slid it in. And did it ever look delectable. Slowly, carefully, she turned to the bassinet that stood beside the hospital bed and gently laid Gregory inside, who squirmed a bit in protest, but didn't wake up, not even after she draped a blanket over him and carefully placed the plush teddy wolf Megan Gwynn had made for him beside him.

"And och, ye've no idea how hungry I am. Feels like everythin' I eat goes straight to feedin' him," she kept her voice down. "So thank ye. So much."

The news was rapidly spreading throughout the institute, good news at that. Anymore, it seemed like hearing good news was a rare occurrence. This news had Clarice giddy in excitement. Rahne had given birth to a beautiful baby boy. She couldn’t wait to go see them. That was the reason she’d gotten up a little earlier than usual this morning. She typically woke up early anyways, so thirty minutes early wasn’t bad at all. Although she didn’t have much planned today, she knew that many would be wanting to see the baby. She assumed by going a bit early, not many people would be down to visit. After getting dressed and fixing her hair, she began her walk to the sub basement.

She exited off the main elevator, stepping out into the glorious basement. A few wrong turns later, Clarice found the infirmary. She walked in, locating a chart on near the front desk area. The chart was like blueprints, the layout of the infirmary and each room were titled. In erasable marker ‘Russell’ was written on the room located at the end of the hall. She made her way towards Rahne’s room, the door already being open. Clarice peeked in, making sure she wouldn’t be disturbing anyone. To her surprise, Evelyn was the only other visitor, and it appeared as if she’d just arrived. Clarice stepped into the room quietly. Rahne wasn’t holding the baby and neither was Evelyn, so she assumed he might be asleep.

“Hey ladies.” She didn’t want to spook either of them, so she figured she had to say something. At the same time, she tried to be quiet, so as not to disturb the baby. “How are you two doing this morning?”

"Okay, Rahne," Ev replied, keeping her voice low to match Rahne's near whisper. The baby was sleeping. She was glad she hadn't woken him up before realizing that it was quiet time. He was a cutie. She smiled at the sleeping little boy without quite realizing it. There hadn't been many younger children in her life, and even fewer babies. Never one this young. He was so little.

"You're welcome," she added after Rahne thanked her. She was glad she hadn't dragged her feet getting everything down here. They didn't get many people down here overnight since things were quiet, so she hadn't had to do this sort of thing since she'd started shadowing the staff here.

Though she generally did bring snacks or tea to share when she came down just because people got so focused on what they were doing they forgot to stop for things like that. So this wasn't completely unusual for her.

"If you want I can write down whatever you'll like for your other meals when you're done?" she began to ask, when someone else joined them. Ev glanced over her shoulder and smiled before replying, "Hullo Clarice. I'm awake that's about it." She wasn't the biggest morning person but she wasn't a grouch in the morning either. It just took her a while for her mind to fully catch up to her body being up and about.

"Oh, muh goodness," Rahne muttered as she pulled the breakfast tray in closer and went to work on the bacon and sausage. Her predatory urges pushed her towards the meats first and she ate with little regard for manners or politeness. She was just so hungry.

"Umph, Evvy, this is fantasti-" Rahne stopped with a sliver of bacon hanging out of her mouth as Clarice made her entrance. She remained quiet for a moment and then quickly chomped it up.

"Um, hello, Clarice. Uh... sorry about that... heh," Rahne quickly grabbed a napkin off of the tray and wiped her mouth clean. "Got a wee bit carried away there."

She picked up the pitcher and poured herself a glass of water, being a bit more careful this time around than she was with the meats on the tray.

"I'd have t' say I'm doin' well, all things considered. I mean, this wee bairn here is... och, look at him..." she trailed off with a smile. There was still a good bit of disbelief at this point. She could hardly grasp to the full extent just what she had now. This baby changed so much, just by existing. The entire focus of her life would have to change, and on one level that was frightening. On another, exhilarating. She felt both ready and unready at the same time. She surely hoped that readiness would win out.

"I'm tired, I'm a bit sore still, an' uch... this big ol' post-baby-belly is just bleh... but I look over at him, or I hold him, or I just smell him... an' it's all worth it," she smiled, reaching over and gently stroking the side of his face with her thumb while he slept.

"Heh. I say that now, but I'm sure he'll find ways t' make me regret that 'fore too long," she chuckled, shaking her head softly.

"Oooh, steak. Goodness me, I want a steak so badly, Evvy... rare. Like, still bleedin' rare. Oh, I want that so bad."

It was obvious Clarice had arrived during breakfast. She couldn’t help but grin at fur-covered Rahne as she approached her. It was apparent she was enjoying the feast that Evelyn had brought her. If she were in Rahne’s position, she’d probably be doing the same thing. In fact, she would be right now if such gesture had been made towards her. She hadn’t eaten breakfast yet, so the various food-related smells in the room were not in her favor.

Blink stopped at the foot of the bed, letting Mrs. Russell finish. Her gesture towards the crib excited Blink, her viewing it as an invitation to go look. She slowly stepped to the side of the bed, peering down inside the baby crib. Instantly cupping her hands, she covered her mouth and nose as she gasped. He was absolutely adorable. Words couldn’t describe the way she felt right now. It wasn’t like she were related to him in any way, but this was the first baby she’d actually gotten to see in quite some time. The only other infant she’d been around in her lifetime was her brother, and she was too young to remember him as an baby. Seeing Greg was just absolutely stunning to say the least.

“Rahne, he’s beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. I am so happy for you and Jack.” Her eyes were locked onto the child, absorbed by his presence. She finally snapped out of the trance, looking back towards the other two.

“So, looks like someone made breakfast. It looks like Evelyn is taking great care of you.” Clarice grinned, glancing from Rahne over towards Evvy.

Evvy was pretty happy that she'd piled the tray like she had. She'd never gone through what Rahne had and couldn't imagine how ravenous she would be in her place.

She really couldn't imagine herself in her place, but then again she'd never been in a long term relationship before. Well. A few years. But she didn't really want to think about that relationship in terms of children, the way it had ended. At least she'd learned better about him before she'd gotten too attached. Or with a connection like a child... she'd have had to deal with him for decades more. Ugh. She was glad that she'd never taken her chances with that guy.

Now, she was focused on her studies as a med student, and her training. She wasn't about to worry about dating, let alone anything serious, until she made some headway and she wasn't so preoccupied. She doubted that would be good for a relationship. If she wanted one. Which she didn't, not really.

Babies were just cute. Especially Rahne's lil guy. Ev scratched down Rahne's order for dinner on her notepad and grinned. "That sounds really good. I'll make sure you get it," she said, just barely remembering to keep her voice down. Sleeping baby. Right. "Its the least I could do," she added at Clarice's praise. "Not much use down here yet, but I can fetch supper at least."

"He is, isn't he?" Rahne asked with a smile as Clarice paid the baby some attention. She found herself truly grateful for the position she was in. It was possible that anywhere else, they'd have to hide this baby, hide themselves, hope and pray that people didn't notice and decide to treat them like monsters. Here, they could be open and sociable, allow and expect visitors. And despite the little guy's fur, his claws, the tail, and the semi-canine look to his face, he charmed the hell out of pretty much everyone who came to see him.

"I guess Jack an' I made a good genetic combination, aye?" Rahne chuckled, shaking her head before returning her attentions to the breakfast. "He mostly sleeps so far, though. I could watch him do that all day. Heck, I do watch him do that all day."

Rahne smiled, glancing to the two young ladies as they each did their respective things. Evvy attending to her duties, making sure Rahne was taken care of, which could possibly have made Rahne feel a bit awkward, but in all honesty, she was grateful for it, and Clarice who stood by, watching as Greg dozed quietly in his little crib. That thing probably hadn't gotten much use, now that Rahne thought about it. Marrow's baby Pearl was probably its first occupant, with Greg being the second...

Were things about to change in that respect? They knew about Rachel, about Talia. Was Xavier's on the verge of a baby boom? That was an odd thought to have. She wasn't entirely sure what she thought of it, even.

"So, ladies, what are we missin' up there above ground? What's the news, the gossip as it were? Anythin' goin' on up there I ought t' be aware of? And have I missed any good television?"

“You sure did.” Clarice grinned, glancing over at Rahne for a brief second. Turning her attention back to Greg, she couldn’t help but feel happy, not only for Rahne and Jack, but for the baby himself. Things would be so perfect for him. When she was a child, her parents chose to keep her from the world. She never got to see visitors or make friends. Her parents at times would become nothing but stressed over keeping her protected. But here at the institute, none of those things would have to happen. Greg would have the childhood she herself had only dreamed of having.

Stepping away from the crib, Clarice sat down in a chair to the left of Rahne’s bed. “To be truthful, I couldn’t really tell you. I’ve seen a new face or two in the halls, but nothing juicy on my part.” It looked like Evvy would have to be the one to fill not only Rahne in, but Clarice as well. She wasn’t the best at keeping up with everyone else’s social status.
While waiting to hear, she studied the room around her. The infirmary was very nice, filled with advanced technology and such. It was rather awe inspiring, being able to have such tools at the school’s disposal. She could only imagine how cool it was to work down here, such as Evvy did.

“So how’s your training down here been going? Are you enjoying it?” she asked the plant manipulator.

"I wish I knew, I haven't done much besides eat, study, train, and sleep in days," Evvy replied with a bashful half smile. She didn't do television much and while she was a lot more social than she once was, her studies ate most of her free time.

"Yeah I've been enjoying it. The company's good down here," she replied still smiling. Avery, Dr. McCoy, Lucy, and then there was Everett who was rather farther along in his studies than she was. And Owl... "I've done simulations with Julian in the DR, and he's said I do well. Besides the endless reading and memorizing. There's just so much to learn. I can't tell how much of a dent I'm making in it. Its overwhelming."

She felt that maybe she might sound like she was complaining, and maybe like she was babbling a little. So she shrugged, and just finished with, "I have a lot of help, when I ask for it. And its something that's worth all that hard work, you know?"

That was just it. It was something that they needed, and it wasn't beyond her abilities. When she first started she thought maybe she wouldn't be up to it, but she thought she could do it now. If she kept at it, and didn't let the sheer amount she needed to learn overwhelm her. Breaks helped. She'd told Synch as much. They couldn't neglect everything else, whether it was a social life, eating right, or resting enough, or it would hit them later. Depending on what they neglected, it could hit them hard.

"Uch, well, I suppose 'tis all well an' good that I've never been much one f'r gossip or anythin' of the sort," Rahne chuckled. That, she figured and the fact that surely not all that much had happened over the course of two days. And as for television... she had no idea. She and Jack rarely watched television, to be honest, excepting in the rare cases when something was good enough to keep their attentions on the screen.

The meal Evvy had brought was all but gone at this point, devoured with canine fervor. Baby-making was hard work - not a single step of it an easy thing, due possibly in part to how quickly it had all progressed, zooming along at nearly half the time frame of a normal human. Her body had been wracked with surges of hormones, her moods had been wild and difficult, and mobility had been a hassle and a half. Not to say the least of which was actually pushing the kid out. The pain had been more intense than anything she'd ever experienced, and left her sore and exhausted for a good while.

But now that was over, and she was - well, she'd hardly say she was in the clear, but she was glad he was out and about now, as it were. One set of challenges down, a new one ahead of her.

"You thinkin' of getting some training yuirself, Clarice? I'd imagine ye'd be invaluable during emergency situations."

As Evvy listed off her schedule and the work she'd been doing, the job suddenly seemed quite a bit harder than Clarice had expected. You'd think the skills required to help people in need would be something easy to learn, considering how important they are. But given the plant manipulator's description, it was obviously quite the opposite. At least she was fortunate enough to have the many experienced medical assistants to aid her.

"You thinkin' of getting some training yuirself, Clarice?"

It was funny that she asked that very question, because it was something the teleporter was considering that very moment. "I hadn't really thought about it until just now. I'd probably make a pretty good ambulance, huh?" She jokingly grinned. Knowing how to deal with injuries during a mission would definitely prove to be useful. "I'll definitely think about it, especially if it would give me a reason to come hang out with little guys like him." Looking over at Greg, fast asleep in his crib. "Maybe you could show me a thing or two sometime so I can see what it's all about." Directing the statement towards Evelyn. She was curious as to what the Danger Room sessions consisted of.

"That'd be great," Evvy said, abruptly lowering her voice halfway through speaking, when Rahne made her suggestion and Clarice considered it. It was hard to remember things like keeping quiet when she got excited, she hoped that she hadn't woken the little guy up.

"Maybe you could sit in on one of my lessons with Julian? I'll ask him," Evvy offered much more quietly. She wasn't really qualified to teach anyone while she was still learning. Especially while there were much more qualified teachers available. "And you can come down with me when I help out down here? I'm sure they won't mind the extra help."

She grinned at the teleporter. The first thing she did when she'd decided what she wanted to do was get to know the infirmary staff and see how she could get involved - some hands on experience even if it was just bumps and bruises and knowing where everything was kept.

"I mean. If you want to. You could totally just learn the first aid stuff for the field, if you'd rather, and if you decide its something you like doing you can think about going further with it then."

Either way, if she stuck with it or not, the skills she'd learn in the mean time would be invaluable for just the reasons the teleporter described. Getting to someone and getting them safe in the middle of a mission, especially if they were trapped or behind enemy lines- it was a brilliant use of her abilities.
