22nd – 23rd March

Justin sighed; he didn’t know why this was happening. Sure, he was all for team building etc but he didn’t feel like bonding with people right this moment. He just wanted to be in his room, reading a good book. Was that too much to ask? Apparently it was. Who had said yes to this stupid get-together anyway? Would people come to this get-together? He sighed again as he packed some stuff for the camping trip. Luckily, it was on the Xavier Grounds so not too far away, which was good. After packing the last of his stuff, Justin grabbed his mobile (never know when you’d get bored and needed to text a friend) and then left the dorm room, locking the door in the process. Time to get this camping thing over and done with, he supposed.

Shouldering his backpack, the student headed for pick up an apple from the kitchen. He smiled at passing students and gave an extra friendly smile to the younger kids, who giggled and ran off when this happened. Justin was fond of the little ones; they were the future and he wondered who could hurt such an innocent and precious thing. They had done nothing to become hated; it was just a part of their genes. When he was older, the disabled student wanted to be an X-Man, sure, but also something with kids, a teacher maybe. He loved them; he didn’t know the reason, he just did, and although he was still young, he couldn’t wait to have kids.

Picking up an apple and taking a bite, Justin headed for the place where the camping was supposed to happen. When he got there, the brunette noticed; a place for the fire, logs to sit on and a bunch of sleeping bags. Where was everyone? Was it cancelled? Please, God, let it be cancelled. Justin moved to one of the logs, and waited for a few minutes.

When it looked like no one was coming, Justin got up to go but was disappointed when he heard footsteps.
Greeeaaaat! Here’s to a weekend of disillusioned fun!

Paige had all but skipped to the site of the camping spot about fifteen minutes before everyone else had arrived, unable to contain her excitement. As usual, despite the fact she was going to be outdoors, she put effort into her appearance, applying light makeup and putting her hair in braided pig-tails. It was her third week at the Institute and she was already invited on a mixer type event, an excursion in which some of the students were invited to come and get to know one another better. It was like fate herself had reached down and gave Paige an easy way to introduce herself to the mutant community on campus. She had signed up for the trip, which really wasn’t a trip as it was still relatively close by - but still! – and pretty much immediately began packing for it.

She brought only the basics – some dry clothes, her worn red sleeping back, her sketch pad and pencil, and her cellphone. Her cell was turned off and in the bottom of her pack, however. Paige had never been one of those girls permanently attached to their cellular devices – and when it came to texting? She was slow as molasses.

But the interaction aspects of the trip made her ecstatic –there might even one on one “spars” with powers, but those were optional. Paige wasn’t sure yet if she would partake in it, considering the rather unfortunate side affect her abilities suffered…hints the extra clothes. The blonde shuddered at the thought of being in a compromising position, but still – that wasn’t really anything a carefully timed morph back to her natural state in the cover of some bushes couldn’t take care of….still…maybe she would be better off simply sitting out…

The omnimorph had heard someone approaching, and that was what had caused her to pop from between some nearby trees, having been exploring the area a bit, excited to have found a stream. She had been watching some minnows flit about in the water. Paige was definitely still a country girl at heart and definitely not one to waste an opportunity to spend a night outside in the great outdoors. She saw the newcomer looking a bit disappointed before he turned in her direction. She was bright eyed and looked a bit younger than she actually was, likely because of the hair, the smile, and her youthful enthusiasm.

“Were you thinking you were the only one?” Paige asked warmly, grinning. She wasn’t sure why her accent came out flat and absent of it’s usual round, Kentucky touch. It was still there, but barely distinguishable. Paige didn’t stop to reflect on it, but went on as if nothing was the matter. “I’m Paige – yes, Sam’s sister.” She added on, just to get the relation out of the way. “You’re the first one here, other than me. The others should be here soon, plus the chaperones. “ Paige approached the boy, sitting down by the unlit camping fire and patting the spot next to her. “Might as well grab some log. I don’t think we’re supposed to start any fun until at least one chaperone is here to make sure we don’t blow ourselves up,” Paige winked conspirationally.

Ros wasn't the typical image of a bookworm. That wasn't to say that you wouldn't be able to find him in a library, or that his nose was always clear of the pages of a book. Such behavior was fairly typical of Ros, and if there was a book within a reasonable distance of him he'd be sure to pick it up and start reading it. But that didn't mean that Ros ignored people, or that he found more company in printed pages than in his peers. He was actually a pretty friendly guy, just easily distracted by whatever he was reading. While a stocked library might be one of his favorite places, Ros wasn't afraid to head out into the sunlight. So he signed up for the camping trip, partially out of residual feelings from reading too many Carl Hiaasen books lately. When you've gone through novels with strong eco-friendly slant you start feeling guilty for turning light bulbs on.

He had without much care shoved a pair of clean clothes into his pillowcase, his toothbrush and a hairbrush. Said stuffed pillow was strapped down to a sleeping bag he borrowed. It was only going to be one night that they were gone, and it was hardly as though they were going to be going into the Sahara desert or climbing up Mount Everest. They would be on the school's rounds, with chaperons. It was hard to picture there being any sort of major emergency that couldn't be handled within the critical period of time that determined life or death.

It was good to see that he wasn't alone in the trip though. Ever since he was little Ros harbored an anxiety about being left behind on school trips. Not that the bus would leave the location and he'd have to make his way back from the science museum, but that the bus would leave him at the school and he'd miss out on the trip altogether. Someone else was waiting in the meeting place, but then they got up as if to go. Confused Ros picked up the pace, now jogging over to the log, holding onto his odd bundle with one hand. "Hold up, I'm still going!"

He thought that maybe the rest of the group had left him behind, with just one person waiting to see if Ros would show up or not. Nevermind the fact that he was actually a little bit early. Ros couldn't help but smile when he saw who it was there, even if he wasn't sure until he came to a halt. So Justin had been signed up for the trip too? Excellent. In Justin Ros had found, as Anne Shirley would have said, "a kindred spirit". They could debate about books, share common author interests. In general Ros liked hanging out with the guy. He looked at the apple and frowned. "Um, should I have brought food?"

Daniel had a slight smirk on his face as he ventured from the mansion along the path toward the meeting area for the camping trip. He even went so far as to whistle as he walked. Daniel would go as far as saying that he preferred being outdoors than inside. On his family’s homestead ranch in Texas he had spent countless nights under the stars with his brothers or even all alone as his brothers grew up and began their own lives. If they had added in an aspect of horseback riding and competition shooting Dan would be in hog heaven.

Mr. Oliver wiggled his shoulders to adjust the straps of his backpack because in one hand he had a shopping back with food and snacks while in the other hand he had a cooler with ice-cold non-alcoholic drinks. The camping trip was for a single night and they were going to be on the school’s property so if they needed anything they were close for supplies. Daniel though briefly of the debacle that had been the campfire lesson where Sally had almost drowned. It was a terrible accident and everyone had been okay after everything was said and done. Daniel knew it was just a learning experience. He would make sure that no one wandered off. With more chaperons on this excursion, it would be an easier feat.

Daniel sensed the presence of the other mutants at the campsite and could feel the others moving in to join them. Daniel emerged through the trees and saw the three mutants already gathered. Justin, a shuffling deck of cards, stood with an apple ready for a snack. Paige, a cool running stream had suggested that they begin gathering some wood for the fire. Ros, the feel of rusted metal, looked as if he had run all the way from the school. “I hope you guys are as excited as I am about this,” Daniel replied with his grin spreading even farther.

Mr. Oliver set the food and drinks and unshouldered his bag. “Yeah, gathering some firewood would be a great idea. We can get everything prepared for tonight. I’ve got the matches and tinder; we can even talk about what goes into a good campfire. I’ve got plenty of snacks and food for you guys. Tonight’s nutritionally balanced meal is comprised of hotdogs and marshmallow. Your parents would be proud,” he said.

A raised eyebrow had thus far been the response to Micah's exuberance to being involved in the student camping trip. Given his lucrative and cushy, albeit short-lived, musical career, some seemed to think that a former pop star was not capable of summoning so much excitement over swatting mosquitos and sleeping in the dirt. It was the Scotsman's humble beginnings in rural Penicuik that exposed him to nature in the first place, his childhood home squarely situated between the edge of town and miles of wilderness in the Pentland Hills.

Micah smiled to himself as he thought of home, shoving an extra shirt into his backpack that was already full for the trip. His parents often gave him the boot outside on the weekends as a boy, hoping he would tire himself out running through the grass and pestering wild sheep that would have preferred to graze in peace.

Only a week before he had been waking up every morning with those hills peering into his bedroom window and the smell of back bacon and tattie scones on the burner. His spring break in Scotland had not been long enough, and the tearful goodbye at the airport with his mum and dad had torn his metal heart in two. He knew he needed to be at the institute for his own well-being, but being apart from his family was still hard. Nonetheless, Micah would take the warm feelings that the memories of home still managed to give him.

Shouldering his now packed bag, Micah gave himself the once over in the full-length mirror propped against his closet door, fussing over his hair that only stubbornly grew an inch every few months and needed diamond edged scissors to cut. His attire for the trip was no different than his every day wear--trainers, jean trousers, t-shirt, hooded jacket--but he preened anyway, pulling a piece of fuzz from the end of his sleeve and pulling it securely over the null cuff on his wrist.

"Awrite, time ter impress the ladies with yer Teuchter charm, Kinsley," he announced aloud, carefully avoiding looking at the empty side of his room as he locked the door behind him in his departure.

A quick walk down the mansion's path into the woods to the camp site revealed that the silver-skinned teenager was not fashionably late, but almost on time, an unusual occurrence in his case. Micah smiled cheerily to everyone present, offering a sparkling wave that cast brilliant dots of light across the ground.

"Ev'ryone fit like today? Justin? Ros? Mr. Oliver?" He noticeably stopped upon seeing Paige, unfamiliar with her face or name, but clearly interested. "An' ye? I dinnae believe we've met, luv."

Evelyn was overloaded with supplies. She probably should have gotten one of the students to help out or made an extra trip for it all, but she hadn't really thought about it until everything was packed and she was ready to go. She had all the camping and survival gear she could dig up, besides snacks, a med kit as well as a lot of reusable heat packs. If it got chilly there would be plenty to go around. Besides all that, she had a sizable bundle of her own things.

She'd roughed it quite enough in her life. Lived from what she could grow or hunt, owned only what she could easily carry. She could do it again if she had to, but the fact was she didn't have to do it and saw no point in going without if she didn't have to. Roughing it for fun was for people who hadn't had to live rough. Not to say she wasn't excited about the weekend camping trip. She really was, she just wanted to make it as comfortable as she could.

She really should have gotten help though. All of the camping gear was bundled up and strapped to her back. Her personal things and the med supplies were in separate bags. She could carry all of that, but doors had been difficult and she just knew that if she fell she would have been like a turtle on its back.

Luckily she didn't have that problem on her way to the designated camp site, and she wasn't even winded hauling everything into the woods. Her arms were another story though, her arms were killing her. She dropped the bag holding her junk, set the med supplies bag down much more carefully, and worked the massive bag containing camping gear off her back.

"Hey everyone," she greeted the group at large with a warm smile. She'd seen them all around but the only ones she really knew were the teacher Daniel, and Micah. Her medical studies took up the majority of her time and energy; except for training sessions she didn't interact too much with the student body. Micah was an exception because he made himself an exception. This weekend was a much needed break and a chance to get to know some of the newer faces at the school.

Elle had no idea how she'd gotten mixed up in this. The trip to the aquarium had been a chance to get away from the school for a bit. She could still see the mansion from here. It was cold, there was still snow on the ground, and it was ugly and cloudy. This weather was the perfect excuse to spend the weekend indoors. Instead, here she was, trudging across the schools grounds to the makeshift campsite.

She'd never really been the outdoorsy type. At least not like this. Elle loved athletics and sports, true. But most of her training and competitions had been held inside. Even with softball and soccer, you didn't wind up sleeping outside on the cold ground. She was a city girl, and half the appeal of going for a jog was winding up back inside at the end. Even during the rough times, she'd wound up in safehouses, hotels and bunkers.

Not exactly in any hurry to get things started, Elle wasn't surprised to see so many others had made it here before her. She recognized a few, and couldn't hold back a smirk as she considered their participation. Micah just wanted to be a part of any gathering, and she didn't think he had to worry about the cold. She doubted he'd even feel a few rocks under his sleeping bag, and it wasn't like any bugs could bite him.

Evelyn was another no-brainer. Elle had met her when she'd first arrived, after apparently living in the woods for a few years and then hiking all the way here. This was practically a picnic in comparison. "I hope you haven't made friends with any of the firewood, Ev. I don't want this campfire to get depressing." She giggled at the thought, as the short girl with black hair joined the group. Elle thought her old boots were appropriate for this, along with dark jeans and her signature black leather jacket. At least the hooded top she had on under that was a bright pink, lightening the look considerably.

"Sparkles here will probably put on a little light show once we get the fire going, so that should keep things fun. He can probably make s'mores in the palm of his hand!" Her wide grin made it obvious her teasing was all in good fun. Elle looked at the others she didn't know after she'd made her entrance, noting the relatively new students and teacher.

Chamber had to admit he was actually looking forward to the camping trip that was planned. He had signed up as a chaperone along with two other people. He had gotten a list of who the other two would be and it was Evvy and Daniel. Jono still felt bad about how the two of them had met, but it was what it was. They had worked past it and had gotten to a friendly medium with them. Evvy was another who he was familiar with, they didn't interact much but when they did it was again a friendly interaction.

Furrowing his brows he scanned the items in his room thinking what he would need most. He really didn't get cold but for presentation sake he tossed in a hoodie into his bag. It wasn't like he was going very far, but still appearances and such. Stuffing in some jeans and two rolls of different coloured bandages as well as a few long sleeved shirts, Jono zipped it up and slipping on his jacket with it's buckles put his bag on his shoulder. Catching sight of his guitar case, he paused again thinking and nodding reached and picked it up sliding the strap over his head.

Heading down to the kitchen he stopped to pick up cases of beer that he had gathered. He knew a few people were old enough to drink and so he felt that if they wanted one they could participate. All others would be subjected to drinking soda. Shrugging he hefted the cases onto his shoulders and heading out onto the porch glanced towards the direction he was heading. Using some of his power he released it around his shoes, propelling himself into the air. With a twist he headed in the direction of the campsite.

While it wasn't really far walking, he had been learning how to use his furnace to help him fly. He looked like a rocket streaking towards the site as his flame extended behind him. Seeing an empty spot he directed towards it and with a blast of flame he melt two holes in the snow and touching down shut off his furnace at his feet. Nodding as he checked his gear over, he headed down the path a little more to the campsite. As he entered the clearing he caught sight of all the people that were in attendance. Catching his other two chaperones, Jono drew closer placing the beer in the snow before drawing closer. His collar was buckled up across his lower jaw, hiding his bandages but that didn't stop him.

::Hello Daniel, Evvy how are things so far? Looks like we got a good group for this,:: he sent only to them his voice cheerful. His brown eyes scanned the group gathered bringing up their names from the roster he had been given. ::Hello everyone, I hope you are looking forward to some fun this weekend, who knows we might even have some unique and exciting activities planned,:: he sent to the rest of the students ::For those of you who don't know me my name is Jono, or if you'd prefer Chamber.::

“I’m late!” Clarice shrieked, looking across the room at her clock. She quickly darted over to her bed, where an open backpack and miscellaneous items were spread across her bed. Today was the day of the camping trip. She’d been thinking about it all week. Blink had never been camping before due to the protection her parents wanted for her. It got a bit extreme, but they just wanted their daughter to be safe. It took a lot of the fun things out of her life, but she was still thankful for what they had done. She’d give anything for them to be back with her.

The entire morning the young teleporter had been running errands around the mansion. Between gathering things for the trip and taking care of other responsibilities, she’d totally forgotten the time. So when she finally saw the clock, she kicked into turbo mode. She threw an extra pair of clothes, her toothbrush and other toiletries, a few snacks, a book, and a flashlight, she zipped up her backpack. Clarice ran over to her bedroom window, not only to see what clothing would best fit, but to see if the others had already started the activities without her. They were completely out of sight. Were they gone? Had anyone even showed up? She wasn’t sure, but seeing the lack of human life only made her work quicker.

The clothes Clarice had been in were not suitable for the outdoors. She changed into a green, white, and blue striped flannel covered by a brown sweater, worn grass green fitted jeans, and a pair of ankle-high brown hiking boots. After grabbing a jacket for safe measure, she slipped on her backpack and grabbed her new sleeping bag she’d bought a few days ago. Before exiting her room, Blink looked at the clock once more. She was really really late. She’d scoped out the walk to the campground the day before. The walk it took to get there would have her even farther behind. But, there was a quicker way to get there…

blink

Within an instant, Clarice had teleported herself about fifty yards away from the campsite. She quickly looked around, hoping nobody saw her do that. She didn’t want to be known as lazy, as she really wasn’t. And desperate times call for desperate measures. Looking over at the designated camping area, she could see the other students and chaperones. They hadn’t left her after all! Rather impressed by the number of people, she approached the group.

“Hey everybody, sorry I’m late. Hope I wasn’t holding you guys up or anything, I got caught up in running a few errands.” Clarice said, an apologetic smile on her face.

Just as the disabled mutant was about to leave, a pretty blonde materialised out in front of him. Had she been here all this time, waiting for people to arrive? Talk about eager. Maybe she was just an outdoorsy type person, which was cool in the male student’s opinion. When the girl introduced herself, Justin was a little surprised. Not because she was Sam’s sister but because she was here, which baffled him. Of course she would be here. If Sam was here, then it was only natural that she’d be here.

“I’m Justin.”

He took her invitation of sitting next to her and smiled back.
“Which is a shame if you ask me, but oh well.”

The brunette heard footsteps and saw a familiar face; Ros. So, he had had come too. Ros had said something like, ‘I’m coming’. Maybe the trip wouldn’t be so bad. He liked the other boy, and they shared a common interest, books. Justin stood up, as if he was about to help his friend with his stuff but his memory went a little blank as to why he had stood up at all. He had actually forgotten about the apple, in all honesty. It’s only when his friend asked if they were meant to bring food that he remembered the apple. He looked at it and blinked, as if this was his first time at seeing an apple. He then mentally shook it off. Justin gave the other brunette a shrug and stated, “I felt peckish so I grabbed an apple. Good to see you’re here, dude. Oh, Ros, this is Paige.”

Not long after Ros came, a teacher came; Mr Oliver. Justin knew Mr Oliver from seeing him around the school. He seemed cool. Mr Oliver asked if they were excited for the trip, a word Justin wouldn’t exactly use. He hadn’t even wanted to come but had been signed up to come on this trip. Oh well, he’d try to be excited, at least. He knew one person here, Ros, which was good. The X-Student heard what Mr Oliver said about the food and chuckled a little. He had to hand it to Mr Oliver, he was a little funny.

Next, another student came along, a boy with silver skin, which was pretty cool, in Justin’s opinion. Now, why couldn’t he have that kind of power? At least this boy could (he assumed) touch people. The disabled mutant nodded at Micah’s question and finished eating his apple. Unsure of what to do with the finished piece of fruit, he held onto it, even if it did cause his glove to smell like apple.

“Hey,” replied Justin when Evvy came with a huge backpack. That…That was a lot of stuff. He briefly wondered how she had managed to carry it all from the Institute. Another student came after Evvy, who exchanged with the plant manipulator. Finally, the last chaperone came and introduced himself. Justin then looked around, wondering if anyone else was coming, which was answered when a female lavender-skinned mutant appeared, apologising for the lateness.

“So….ummm…..what do we do now?”

[OOC: I apologise for keeping you guys waiting]

Justin was probably the best friend that Ros had these days. His childhood friends were living in different places, and the one who had given him his Beethoven poster actually lived in a different state. They kept in touch over the years, but there was a difference between someone you write letters to and someone that you can just turn to and talk about how lunch that day seemed to be made of R.O.U.S. Justin was of the lunch time friend. He was there to talk to about anything from world events to how best survive in a hotel when rabbits have become supreme overlords. Right now Justin was able to fill Ros in on the food situation. The apple wasn't part of a meal that Ros had forgotten to pack. Justin had just gotten the apple. The same sort of worry that made Ros think that he was late for the trip also made him think that he was going to be skipping the evening meal today because he didn't bother putting any food in his pillowcase.

But one of the chaperones was there to relieve that worry. Tonight they would all be dining on the classic campfire fare. Hot dogs had stopped being Ros's favorite food around the same time he realized that they barely qualified as a meat product. It did not help that his old school had such poor lunch time choices that the only edible things were hot dogs and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. There was a reason why a pb&j was his favorite. Still, a hot dog cooked over open flames beats the snot out of ones cooked in mass quantities like a school would do. Even better was that there was the hot dogs to eat and he wasn't expected to go out and hunt for something. He might have read books like The Hunger Games or The Hatchet, but that did not mean that the teen understood how to hunt for food in the wild. Also he doubted that there was much more than squirrels and birds in the woods near the school. With all the noise that the students made he felt a little amazed that there was even that much.

He couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at the size of Evvy's backpack. The two had had fun with the snowball fight, and with how hard she managed to peg him with the snow, Ros knew that Evvy was no weakling. She seemed to be handling the pack just fine, so that wasn't what was causing the concern. Was Evvy just one of those people that over packed for any occasion, or was there more planned for this trip than any of them had anticipated? It made him and his small amount of luggage look painfully under prepared. “Now we wonder just how far from the school they plan on taking us,” Ros whispered back to Justin, keeping his eyes on the huge backpack Evvy was carrying.

Evvy rolled her eyes at the teasing but she smiled nonetheless right back at Elle. She hadn't really spent much time around her outside of training. And that wasn't really how she ought to judge a person, because plenty of people weren't at their best in their early training. That went double for someone's first DR session. Her choice in what to tease about was a little off, but just on this side of silly.

"Ah no worries about that, I love a good camp fire," she replied, before putting her hands on her hips and surveying the area around the camp site. She didn't want to do it right in the middle of camp... While she was considering just what to do what she planned on doing, she nodded and smiled to everyone as they arrived. There were a few perturbed looks at the size of her pack, but she had her reasons.

Jono announced that there were going to be some fun events set up for the students. She smiled, and as people rested from the hike into the woods, she said, "I'll be setting up right outside of the camp site. Any bumps or bruises come right to me alright? Have fun everyone, that's what we're out here for."

She hefted her gear up to her shoulder again with some difficulty and grinned at everyone. "I'll light up some torches when I'm done setting things up, lemme know if you need me for anything."

That said, she made her way to a nearby clearing and set to work making it into something rather fantastic and comfortable out of the existing vegetation. In the end she had a gazebo created from young trees, twined together over a dozen feet over her head and creating a natural canopy, a table, and an assortment of seating padded with thick springy moss.

Rather than a tent, she'd brought a hammock and netting, both of which hung easily around the gazebo. That done, she organized her medical supplies on one of the tables, set up the torches, and put her feet up. She had a feeling that she was going to spend most of her free time here this summer.
