FULL NAME: Danielle Moonstar
CODENAME: Mirage
NICKNAMES: Dani, The Moon and Stars, Moon, Star. Just don’t call her Pocahontas. She hates that. Unless you’re a close friend that knew her since she was a teen. You probably still call her that. And she probably still jabs you in your gut-in a friendly way, of course.

PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

HEIGHT: 5’6
BUILD: Athletic build, giving her a lean and tone body
EYES: Brown
HAIR: Black (Her hair is her trademark as it’s quite long. It tends to get wavy if the temperature is humid enough.)
DISTINGUISHING MARKS: N/A
CLOTHING STYLE: Dani likes to keep it simple and wears jeans and tank tops. She’s also overly fond of workout clothes and it’s not unusual to see her in a wide array of athletic gear from feminine workout outfits to men’s basketball shorts and an oversized t-shirt. Dani has never been the glamorous type, but she does know how to clean up. Provided someone helps her. Though it’s important to note even at a formal event her make up would be minimal or nonexistent.

Her hair is long and she’s partial to doing twin braids. If she’s not wearing jeans or work out gear, she has at times been caught in shorts and midriff shirts, but she isn’t doing it to be sexy. She’s most likely hot. She can wear shorts that are a bit too tiny and a midriff, but act as if it’s simply another outfit. She doesn’t do sexy and if someone was hoping she was attempting to be an alluring sex pot they would be disappointed. If anyone is attracted to Dani, it’s because quite frankly, she doesn’t give a damn about what you think of her fashion choices. (Which is why she can wear those ugly men’s basketball shorts mentioned earlier with a matching tank top and be completely at ease.)

UNIFORM:
A bodysuit with a proper sports bra that is fit and flexible to allow maximum efficiency in any combat situation.

POWERS
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Empathic Illusion Casting

Dani’s powers have some resemblance to the Wyngardes (Jason, Martinique, Regan) illusion casting, but there are stark differences. She is able to construct three dimensional avatars by probing into the minds of others and creating illusions. The main difference between her and the Wyngardes is that her illusions only affect the person from whom she pulled an image, whereas the Wyngardes can use an image to mislead several people. When her power first manifested she was only able to pull out image’s of one’s greatest fears. Over time she has learned to pull out images of one’s greatest desire or what the “heart desires,” as she calls it.

She can however, make several people see an image at once. As an example, she could pull out everyone’s greatest fear and everyone in the room would see and experience something different. She also has mastery over some of the minor tricks that other illusionists employ such as being able to cloak herself. She can use this cloaking ability to either change her appearance, disguise herself, or someone else as the situation calls for.

Dani’s powers extend towards animals and the same rules that apply to humans apply to animals as well.

Psionic Neural Arrows

She is able to construct psionic arrows that can stun an opponent’s central nervous system. Out of all of Dani’s powers this one is the most volatile as the amount of energy and power she focuses into these arrows can cause more damage.

Dani has learned to combine her empathy with her psionic arrows. She can have her target be hit with an arrow to achieve a certain effect such as fear, happiness, or anger. Once the target is hit they would relive their most frightening, loving, or rage filled memory depending on what Dani was attempting to achieve.

Animal Empathy

Unlike humans, Dani is able to telepathically connect with animals on a surface level. The connection isn’t similar when a telepath connects to a human mind. She is able to gauge their feelings, send visuals to them, and even see through their eyes. However, as it is an animal with what one would consider of “lesser intelligence” (animal lovers such as Dani would assert otherwise) their eyesight functions differently so she may not see a complete picture the way her human eyes would when connecting with an animal.

An odd side effect is that she is able to connect with mutants and other super powered humans who have the ability to shapeshift into an animal or an animal like form. As the mutant or super powered human still possesses a human mind the connection isn’t as strong as it is with an animal mind.

Skills

Dani is a formidable at hand to hand combat. Due to her upbringing she is highly skilled with various weapons such as knives, spears, bows and arrows. She is fond of the bow and arrow and can use it in combat situations, when non-superhuman techniques are necessary. She isn’t one to rely solely on super powers, so she is proud of what she can accomplish on her own. Quite frankly, Katniss has nothing on Dani.

WEAKNESS:

Empathic Illusion Casting
As stated earlier, Dani’s illusions only affects the person from whom she plucks an image. Unlike telepaths and empaths, whenever she picks an image it is always a luck of the draw. (A telepath or empath would know exactly what they pulled from the mind of another.) With Dani there is no telling what exactly she will have pulled from the mind of the person she is attempting to use her power on. She doesn’t know if her power will achieve the desired outcome and even worse, she could be caught up in the moment and end up frightened or shocked by what she sees.

Dani’s greatest roadblock in using her power is her fear that if she were to utilize it to its full potential she’ll become a monster. Even her enemies, which she despises, she can see herself willingly using her illusion casting, but attempts to avoid so as she finds her power to be a form of torture when pulling out one’s greatest fear. It would have to be the only option left as she much prefers to fight on a combative level. Speaking of which, while Dani is a highly skilled athlete and possibly the top of her class, she is still human when it comes to strength and speed. She may know how to punch and block, but that doesn’t mean she’d stand a chance against a Carol Danvers or Monet St. Croix.

On a more technical level, Dani must be able to see the person who she wishes to use her power on in person. Meaning if she sees someone on television- nothing would happen. If there was a loud neighbor next door in her apartment, she couldn’t do anything either. However, if she can get a visual on a person even several yards away, she could draw an image from them. As long as they are live and within her view she can use her power.

She also requires concentration otherwise the illusions can dissipate. If the person is strong willed and knows of Dani’s ability they could fight the illusion, provided they haven’t been overtaken by fear. Her illusions be they negative or positive cause an immediate emotional reaction to the person she is inflicting them on. This means that while she can control the image, she cannot control how the person reacts as a result.

Psionic Neural Arrows

Unlike her illusion casting, if a target is hit with one of her arrows she is unable to determine what memory the victim relives as it is a memory that occurs within their mind. Like her illusion casting, she has no control over the victim’s reaction.

Animal Empathy

This is her least developed power as it’s difficult to practice with as each experience is different as each animal has different neural signals, limitations, strengths, and weaknesses. It is possible for her to unconsciously connect with an animal, and while that may not seem like a negative attribute if the animal in question was in pain it could cause her mind to experience pain or her body would go into shock.

Almost Human

True, she is a mutant, but she has no special powers to protect herself in combative situations. Dani can be shot, stabbed, and killed like any other human. Though if a human wanted to beat her to death it would be a long fight. A mutant with strength on their side? Well, let’s just say Dani knows she is a goner.

PERSONALITY

Dani is a highly energetic woman who cannot keep still. She doesn’t work out to keep her figure, she does so to exert all the extra energy she carries around. Dani likes keeping busy and her favorite way to do so is through sports. She tends to like more active sports, such as soccer and basketball. (She adores hockey and football due to how aggressive it can be, by the way. It’s a combat sport where aggression is encouraged.) This isn’t to say Dani is a violent woman, far from it. Sports are simply her way of exerting pent up energy and working out any emotional turbulence she is experiencing at the moment. She rather body slam someone against a wall or tackle someone to the ground, than take her anger out unnecessarily on others.

Her major fault is that she’s a fairly direct woman and tends to be a thrill seeker. Perhaps due to her mutation, Dani can be a bit fearless, which some may interpret as recklessness. Dani enjoys living life and this can be exhibited through her friendly personality, but her direct nature does have some drawbacks. She tends to be a bit sassy. As she has more active interests, Dani can be seen mostly hanging with the boys. The only thing that has managed to get her to sit still are video games and school, which she struggles with. She’s the girl that stands up and screams, while slamming the controller down. Don’t expect Dani to actually stay seated the entire time she’s gaming. (Any gamer at the mansion knows she mostly prefers combat games over long drawn out games that require save points. Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat, those are quick games up her alley. She’d die if you asked her to play a marathon session of Assassin's Creed. She might even like the game, but after a while her attention will drift and she’ll want to be part of the world once again.)

Along with her direct nature, she is a fairly passionate person. When she was younger it was normal for her to punch first, ask questions later. She still wants to punch first, ask questions later, but that’s what sports are for and her tongue. Dani was use to getting into trouble as she has no problem speaking her mind and questioning authority.

A word on her Cheyenne background. It’s not a private matter per se, but she has struggled and accepted living in the world of the “White Man.” Having experienced her fair share of racism, she was angrier towards Caucasians when she was younger, but time and experience has shown her that her initial beliefs were wrong. She’s extremely proud of her heritage, but due to negative past experiences she does not openly share what it means to her to be part of the Cheyenne nation. (It should be noted that upbringing is what made her the altruistic person she is today as she is a truly ethical and moral person-despite the fact that she may have gotten into one too many fights when she was younger.)

She hates that people have a certain expectation of how Native Americans should behave. She has been known to be facetious and take on a “Tiger Lily” persona around more ignorant people. That’s never a good sign. It means she’s mad and is debating whether she should punch you in the face or say something to make you feel stupid in the end. Also...fair warning, don’t call her Pocahontas. That drives her crazy.

With all that being said, the problem with Dani is that people can’t keep up with her and at times she doesn’t slow down long enough to let people in. Though at the end of the day, you’ll know where you stand with her. She doesn’t beat around the bush and play games. She lays all her cards on the table, because at the end of the day, she expects the same in return even if she understands intellectually not everyone is like her. She just wishes they were upfront like her.

HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE

Dani’s parents (William and Peg Lonestar) were a lucky sort that knew they were meant to be from a young age. They loved their life on the reservation and grew up to be happy well adjusted adults. Once married they made the decision to move outside of the reservation. At first, not many people from the reservation understood why they made that decision as they had thrived and been so successful within the confines of the reservation. However, the couple was untraditional and they felt it necessary to experience the world outside of the Rez in order not to close the opportunities and learning experiences that all adults needed.

Once Dani was born, she lived a happy life in the ranch her parents built on the outskirts of Boulder, while visiting her grandfather. She enjoyed visiting her grandfather’s home in the mountains and learning about who she was and what it meant to be part of the Cheyenne nation. Straddling the world of the white man and the Cheyenne was a struggle for her, but she slowly learned how to navigate both worlds to a comfortable degree.

Danielle loved her childhood otherwise. She was able to learn about Mother Nature, ride horses all day and night when visiting her grandfather and learn about all the strange and adorable animals that simply weren’t in the city of Boulder. Her grand father was an amazing mentor teaching her about her culture, the ways of the world, and great information such as the variety of plant species and their uses from healing minor cuts to using certain plants to aid with stress. Her education may be unconventional to a Westerner, but she never felt she lacked a proper education. To her it is more odd that people didn’t learn these things about nature and how everyone was interconnected.

Her powers emerged at an early age, eleven to be exact, which caused her to be ostracized in her community. Dani would unconsciously bring out the darkest fears of others and people saw her as a dark shadow out to cause harm, instead of a little girl with no control over her newly manifested power. She was convinced living with her grandfather, Black Eagle, was the best decision for her. At the time her parents were not for it, but she ended up dreaming that her parents were killed by a bear. Afraid her dreams were prophetic, when the day came that her parents went missing in the mountain Danielle was shocked and went into a tailspin. Convinced they perished she moved in with a family friend, The Roberts, and during this time a demonic bear haunted her. Her grandfather helped the best he could with spells.

Pat Robert was becoming a close family friend, almost a paternal figure, when she did the unthinkable and brought forth his greatest fear. Distraught Dani ran away and moved in with Black Eagle the way she had always originally planned. Though she felt the cost was too high. Her grandfather did his best to help her, but by the time she reached fourteen he came to the serious conclusion that what plagued Dani was not mystical, but instead a mutant power. As it wasn’t his realm of expertise he sought help for his granddaughter by enrolling her at the Charles Xavier Institute for Gifted Youngsters. Danielle thrived in this new environment and began to have better control over her powers with the help of her teachers. She even learned she could pull out one’s “heart desire” which was such a relief when compared to the greatest fear she could pull out at east. (She actually isn’t hesitant in using that side of her power unlike the fear based one.) Dani did suffer some losses such as the death of a fellow student in 2003, but the worst blow was when Charles Xavier went missing during the mutant rights conference of 2005.

The year 2007 was to put it bluntly, terrible for Dani. Students were kidnapped and tortured. The Savage Land was discovered. And there was that messy scene with the Brotherhood in Connecticut, though on the bright side X-Factor came to be during that time. Things stayed the same in 2008 when ShadowX happened. Dani had a decision to make, but ultimately stayed behind and did not help the X-Men. However, the team was able to persevere.

She just had no idea what the following year had in store for her.

DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009)

Dani at this point had become a full fledged X-Men member after having been part of the Xavier Institute for nine years. Yet, due to inexperience she would be sidelined during the events of Apocalypse and be asked to stay behind to protect the school. Everything inside of her wanted to go against the grain and join the good fight. She couldn’t stand the thought of not helping, but then she saw the kids at the mansion and thought of them and her new precarious situation. It wasn’t as if though becoming a member of the X-Men granted you with full fledged tenure. She could either disobey or do the right thing and help out at the mansion.

So she stayed. Once the children were all safely evacuated Dani wanted to prove her worth. Once War arrived though there was a chill that went down her spine she faced him head on and fought. Now, she didn’t give him a final blow, or even come up with some new plan of attack. It was the most intensive battle she ever experienced. The amount of power on War’s side was awe inspiring. Yet, Dani managed to survive. And that little morsel of information convinced her she was always meant to be an X-Man. It isn’t about winning, as much as it was surviving and doing the right thing. She could have left and gotten her jolly on, but she stayed and she was so glad she did.

POST-APOCALYPSE

Naturally things can never calm down as there was always a new adventure ahead of her. Worlds were merging and she witnessed the merging of two realities, one that never had a Charles Xavier. The whole thing was quite strange to her until an entity called Onslaught made its presence known. People from her reality were being switched out from those of the alternate reality. Somehow the X-Men were able to team up with X-Factor, Hellfire, and the Brotherhood in order to fight this thing. Together they won, but in the back of Dani’s mind she was already wishing there was a break. It just seemed incredible to her that so many bad things could happen to one concentrated group. Things couldn’t possibly get worse.

But you know what they say. Be careful what you wish for.

PURIFIERS

The Purifiers was hands down one of the lowest points emotionally for Dani. The enemies hit much too close to home. It wasn’t simply that they were religious zealots from the fringe spreading their hate. That type of racist babble she was use too. She had thick skin for those type of attacks. What she couldn’t accept was that mutants were targeted. Men, women, and children were killed. She had a spine made of steel until they managed to enter the building and bombed the school. There were her friends. Her kids. The one she saw roaming the school. This was personal. She wanted to cry and scream out to Mother Earth, the Heavens, anyone, anything that would listen, but she steeled herself. She grabbed those emotions and trudged forward. Those that survived needed Dani to be strong and though she wanted to cry, to experience the pain and hurt, she chose to be a helper instead.

She fought off as many of the Purifiers as she could and with her full strength. It just wasn’t enough as much as it killed her. It was never enough and a part of her will always feel guilty for that. Only those closest to her would know how deep those wounds went.

SKRULLS

Dani was among those who stayed at the Worthington Complex, while it was being rebuilt. She felt the urge and need to return to Colorado and so her and group of friends went to see her home. She discovered then that her parents were in fact alive, but had become possessed by the demonic bear that had plagued her in her earlier years. Once the spirit was expelled from her parents she was reunited with her parents and felt euphoric. It seemed that something was finally going right in Dani’s world and so she was able to leave them in Colorado knowing that the damn bear was gone and wouldn’t bother her family again.

Around this time she received an invite from Amara to visit Nova Roma. During their stay in Amara’s home they were meant to unwind and simply visit Amara’s father when things became complicated. Amara was kidnapped and Dani sure as hell wasn’t going to let anything happen to her friend. During the fight against the kidnappers, Dani was taken as leverage. Though hope came in the form of other allies and they were all saved. Amara and Dani were not worse for wear minus a few scrapes and bruises. The worst result of this kidnapping was the outing of Amara’s power to Nova Roma, but as her friend was safe and sound all was well in Dani’s point of view.

After these events the Skrull attack happened and Mirage was faced with the knowledge that the complacency wave along with the psychic inhibitor prevented her from being a full and active participant against the fight. Even if the complacency wave hadn’t taken effect, the inability to use her psionic powers would have made fighting difficult. Dani hated the actions she completed under the effect of the complacency wave and hoped to forget what she had done and how she was unable to help the X-Men.

Dani was then given the worst news. Her grandfather, Black Eagle, had dementia. Compelled by blood, she took a leave and went home to take care of the man who had taught her so much. Being his caretaker was difficult, but worst was seeing him forget everyone and everything. There really was no words to describe it and for the time being she was on leave from the X-Men.

CURRENT HISTORY POST ILLUMINATI
Cyclops died. Spiral attacked New York and killed a Horizons lab member. People who had no business harnessing the Phoenix Force were able to do so. Her good friend Amara had been kidnapped by the Hellfire Club. The Illuminati weighed heavily on Dani. She was on leave when she learned Cyclops had been killed. It deeply disturbed her to know that those she trusted could be turned into puppets by the whims of maniacs in a greedy search for power. The emotional toll was almost equal to that of the chaos brought on by the Purifiers when the school was destroyed.

Faced with a terrible dilemma she didn’t know what to do. Should she help or take care of her grandfather? If he died while she was away, she wouldn’t be able to forgive herself. But perhaps, they would need her this time. Her choice to stay was personal as much as it was ethical.

She kept in contact with certain X-Men via e-mail and text to know what was happening at the school. Dani has a habit of wanting to review what went wrong. Why did the Dark X-Men attack the school? She understood how it happened, but truthfully she wants to know why them? Are they all susceptible to becoming a darker version of themselves? Everywhere events were chaotic by sea and land. It didn’t matter where, be it Paris, Russia, the Sea, or Mutant Town, but the Illuminati plot was unfolding right around the time her grandfather was becoming progressively worse.

He had been hospitalized around the inception of the Illuminati fights and she felt terrible not being there, but if he died, while she was away Dani felt she would never be able to forgive herself. Once the events ended, friends and her parents began to urge her to do what was right for the two of them. Her parents insisted that Dani go back to New York to live life. They would hire a nurse and if not, place him in a home that specialized in taking care of the elderly with advanced dementia. She didn’t want that for him. She was certain her grandfather would be okay, but the day she tried to brighten his day by pulling out his heart’s greatest desire from his mind and found nothing, but static was the day she finally allowed herself to cry and grieve. She knew her grandfather was finally gone at this point. He was a shell of the man he use to be and there was nothing she could do to save him, so reluctantly, and after much paperwork, two nurses were found (day and night nurse) to help aid him.

The last communication she had was with Cypher was pitching in for Rahne’s baby shower gift. Her friends are unaware of the situation with her grandfather and that she plans to return to New York. In fact, she has been ignoring Doug’s e-mails lately. She had been gone for so long, she wasn’t sure if they would even accept her. But what was she to do? This was her family.

She plans on returning now back to her home, but with a heavy heart knowing that the one person she wanted to protect, she would never be able to save, despite her awesome gifts.

SAMPLE RP POST:

After the Skrull attack Dani took some time off and went back to Colorado. She needed to get away from New York, the drama, and clear her head before she tore someone’s head off. She figured after she contemplated smacking some of her teammates around that it was time for a break. There really was no way to explain how someone was accidentally punched.

Back home she slept in the first day until 9:07 a.m. and promptly dragged herself out of bed and opened the window to smell the fresh outdoors. She didn’t know what she hoped to gain from this trip other than to find herself once again. A part of her was still stressed out over the fights. Stressed over the fight to save her grandfather. It just seemed like one too many.

When exactly would it end?

Before she could depress herself with the realization that her glass was half empty an old friend stopped by her house.

“Dani. I heard you were here.”

“Jacob?”

She ran to the door and swung it open, nearly tackling him with a bear hug. They exchanged quick greetings that ranged from, “You look amazing,” to “I can’t believe you’re here!” After about five minutes of what Dani would have called flattery (or ass kissing if she was in a foul mood) they decided to spend the day together.

There was so much to do. Hiking. Horse riding. Perhaps even a quick game of volleyball. She dragged Jacob around as he skipped out on work by mentioning Moonstar had returned. Even after all these year there were some in the Rez that feared her and she had come to accept it, though it still stung when she least expected it.

Colorado was beautiful and ripe for adventures with waterfalls one could jump off of and rivers to swim in. There were trails to climb around and get lost for hours, just as there were animals who wanted to run up and be noticed for who they really were. After swimming, running, and jumping around all day, Dani fell on the soft ground with her friend Jacob next to her.

“Dani?”

“Mmmhmm. Staring at the sky. Introspecting. This better be good.”

Jacob stayed quiet for a bit until he spoke again, his hand grabbing hers in the way she expected siblings to hold hands when something significant would be said.

“Doesn’t it worry you? All the madness? Isn’t this the 50th time that some evil thing comes to take over the world? Doesn’t it get tiring? People still talk. We hear stuff too, Dani. Even out in the Rez.”

“Jacob.” She sat up. “It’s not that I don’t worry about it. Or that I don’t know there’s some bad ass out there who might trip me up. It’s just...I can’t run away. I may need to get away from it all. Come back, reconnect with who I am, but in the end, I’m a fighter. I always have to return.”

“I hope you made the right decision my Moon and Stars.”

She poked the man next to her.

“Hey, have a little faith. I know exactly what I’m getting involved in.” He sat up too and looked at her quizzically and she punched his shoulder lightly for good measure.

“Trust me. I’m no weak girl.”

“Never said you were Dani. And that’s what scares me the most.”

“Whatever.”

She laid back down and looked up at the sky wondering what that meant and if there was weakness somewhere etched on her body. It didn’t seem fitting. She had weak spots, but she never considered herself the weak link and perhaps it was that bravado he referred to earlier. It made her wonder if her need to get away was a sign of weakness in itself. Sitting back up she decided she would have to call someone at the Institute. Anyone really. Amara. Piotr. Sam. Didn’t really matter who picked up. Just a person that reminded her home was in New York too. And that she belonged there, but refusing to be sentimental she decided she’d be upfront and simply ask if they missed her yet. If not, well...she could always stay in Colorado a bit longer until they did.

Though there was the issue of her grandfather. He would be going to the doctor tomorrow for a second opinion. A part of her new that if the diagnosis was not to her liking, she would stay. For all her talk about being lured in by the thrill of the fight, there was one thing more powerful than any mission and that was her family, only followed by her friends. She simply couldn’t walk away from Black Eagle. He was everything to her and she had to honor his life the best way she knew how.

“I might stay here. A bit longer,” she told Jacob. He didn’t respond just listened as Dani turned towards him. “It just depends on where I’m most needed to fight.”

She didn’t think he’d understand, but she would cherish this last day. Running around wild and being one with the wind. If her life was to change there was no one more deserving of her giving up everything, her friends, her career, her life’s purpose for, but she didn’t know if anyone would understand. She knew then she would have to call Rahne first to explain what she was deciding in that moment. Hopefully the Scot didn’t burst into tears, because Dani wouldn’t be able to keep an even voice.

A part of her knew deep down inside she would be leaving the X-Men for a while, but she hoped deep down inside that one day she could return. And that they would understand why she would wind up making this decision.
