POWERS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Zoe is simply an animated skeleton still wearing meat. Technically, she is a psychic entity in permanent possession of her own skeleton. She wears the flesh that covers her bones like another would wear a coat…of meat. Her original flesh is dead and would decay if allowed; Zoe has zero mental control over it. Instead Zoe has effectively telekinetic control of her skeleton.

Dead flesh means that she does not heal, muscles don’t contract and thus she cannot show emotion, she can’t breathe and has no voice in the usual sense. In fact, the only parts of Zoe’s body that moves and is not skeletal are her eyes, though the movement is sluggish. Additionally Zoe has zero sense of smell and taste and is denied the pleasure of the sins of the flesh. She also must be careful not to get cooked or frozen. That’s most of the Down side.

Upside is, Zoe has zero needs of the flesh, and she does not sleep, eat, nor need to breathe. She has virtually limitless stamina, can survive in a variety of toxic environments and her flexibility is on par with professional contortionists. Zoe is also immune to blinding and deafening effects of a physical origin.

Zoe’s sense of touch is somewhat dulled with the flip of the coin being that she does not feel physical pain, her sense of hearing is completely unimpeded and her eyesight (however it functions as it does not rely on her physical eyes) is 60/20 with out her being long-sighted. Zoe talks using a limited form of telepathy, purely one way, she can send but not receive, and line of sight to a persons target’s head only. Her range is unlimited as long as she can make out that the person’s head is a head. She can whisper or shout and select her targets from all those she can see. The voice people hear is approximate to her voice before her mutation activated and she cannot change it. Yes she can make people “hear voices” but this ability won’t be abused, pranks may or may not occur once or twice. This is the full extent of any psychic abilities she will ever possess.

Zoe’s control over her skeleton was only confirmed when she lost the flesh on two fingers but retained full control over them. Testing has shown that the force holding her bones together is at least equal to what the flesh of the living does. She can also animate her bones even when they are separated from the whole, however she can only animate them in a way that her muscles previously could have. She could make a detached hand walk but not fly or she could make a finger bend but not spin. Her naked bones have better touch sensitivity than her dead flesh, as such her flesh acts as a buffer.
Her strength is on par with a healthy grown woman and reflexes are on par with an Olympic table tennis player.

At some point in the future Zoe is likely to be stripped of her flesh in some manner. This will have the effect of improving her agility due to her reduced weight but would reduce her durability. She would likely need some non cliché protection for her bones so they don’t get battered and broken. Greater detail will be provided if/when this happens with Admin approval.

Since Zoe lacks many needs of the flesh, she is potentially able to train 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. While she lacks the self discipline and attention span to fully make the most of this, she has trained her physical abilities more in the last year than most normal people are capable of doing (and at the same time finished high school). In the field of battle, Zoe is becoming something of an all rounder, adept at much but not yet an expert of anything. Her only natural talents seem to be in archery and shooting as she has an incredibly stable aim and the eyesight to match. She is also becoming a very capable melee combatant as she does not let up one little bit until she wins or loses.

WEAKNESS: Due to Zoe existing as a psychic entity, she is more vulnerable to subtle telepathic intrusion and very vulnerable to mind readers. If it’s not subtle then it’s just the usual battle of wills that applies to everyone.

If Zoe comes under the effect of Null technology the she would become unconscious.

Most of Zoe’s weaknesses fall under the category of “My body is dead”. She can’t replace lost limbs with cybernetics, have kids, or go out in public without a disguise. This is countered by the fact that she could survive at the bottom of the ocean, the surface of the Moon or Mars while naked (taken into account that she might be frozen solid however if she has flesh still).

Despite Zoe’s immunity to a variety of hazards, her physical durability is little better than an average person. If her bones are broken, she’s gonna have a hard time.

PERSONALITY

Zoe is very much an optimist and something of an idealist. The worst that can happen to her – death – has already happened and she got over that. Mostly she is a fairly average happy kid, and this is not something that will change in a hurry. Becoming a mutant and a zombie at the age of 17 broadened her horizons and took some of her childhood innocence. The nature of her mutation, separating mind from body, has had a distinct effect upon her. The lack of raging teenager hormones has left her noticeably calm in all but the direst of circumstances, and simply focused when the pressure is on. She basically lacks the fight or flight reflex which makes her chill and a little aloof. The fact she never gets tired or needs to sleep has done nothing to improve her typical teenage lack of patience.

Being pretty much the living dead has retuned Zoe’s desires but not changed all too much. As to Zoe’s interests and desires, she comes across a little boyish. She likes video games, sports, combat training and one day wants to own a motorbike. She reads fantasy books by the truckload, watches action and horror movies and has a collection of zombie and skeleton toys/action figures. She does miss things like icecream on waffles, the promises of future physical intimacy, and the feeling of an adrenalin rush, but she has accepted the price for never ever getting sick or tired or hungry, for amazing vision and for being the god of video game marathons.

In the general sense, Zoe is a bit of an angel, though far from perfect. She is kind and considerate, generous and polite. Loyalty come naturally to her, she is a definitive team player and not so much a leader. Her best friend is her Mum and she loves her family very much. She is cheeky and likes to receive cheek in return. Zoe likes animals more than she likes people. She thinks the kids of her own generation have been screwed up more than a little but she not sure where the blame lies. Zoe likes company but is not very social; this can be pictured as wanting to be in the same room as people but doing her own thing. She is more than a little philosophical, she has a vague belief that the world would be better off with all the people washed away, but at the same time feels the world is merely a resource for whatever lifeform chooses to use it. She wants proof before she will join any religion but recognises proof denies faith, she will happily however point out that maybe God created the Big Bang and everybody is a little bit right. Zoe refuses to side with either Mutants or Humanity instead seeking happy coexistence, so she’s in the right place at least. From her point of view, the genetic difference between mutant and non mutant is less than between male and female, it’s a gene versus a whole chromosome but she admits she is no expert.

The biggest failing in Zoe’s psyche likely goes to her lack of ambition, and this goes hand in hand with her less than awesome self discipline. Whether this is a case of having not yet found the right goals to pursue or lethargy born of immortality is yet to be determined. Zoe is well aware of her potential but more often than not focuses on enjoying the now, she does want to do good with her “life” but has not found her particular direction. She is intelligent but not super bright, Zoe would rather read fiction than study. She does possess a good grasp of the basics of science and gets new stuff pretty quick.

Zoe’s favourite colour is white, she likes travel and seeing new places and she wants to be a writer if she ever grows up.

HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE

Zoe is a small town girl from a small town place, raised right by her two college professor parents. She has no daring schoolyard tales to tell, no interesting scars to show but she does have a ton of photos for all her holidays away with family. Nice, kinda boring, rarely exciting, plain life.

So 18 years ago, late Jan in ’96, Mr and Mrs Beals have their first child, fantastically happy, excited parents, fantastically happy, excited grandparents, normal stuff. Fast Forward six years wash rinse repeat, lil’ Zoe gets a kid brother, happy excited Parents, ditto Grandparents, less than enthusiastic Zoe. Initially she hated having to share her Mum and Dad with a little brother but she soon found more freedom to get into mischief and a little brother can make a great scapegoat when push comes to shove meets delicate vase. As is the way with siblings often, Zoe and Zach eventually became good friends, Nerf gun battles never got old.

Zoe did the things all kids do, she went to school, played with friends and mostly stayed far away from trouble. The Beals went on holiday most summer breaks. Mum and Dad being college professor believed in giving their kids good experiences, so Zoe has been to Japan, Disney world, Canada and across most of America. Sure she hasn’t seen the whole world but she was opened to other cultures and other ways of life.

School went very smoothly, dedicated parents made up for a less than dedicated kid. Zoe never failed any of her classes but A passes were far and few between. She spent more time reading what she wanted rather than what she should. As such, her knowledge base was broad but not deep.

DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009)

Zoe was a little more 13 years old when she had her idyllic world crushed for the first time. With her and family living in South Dakota, she was buffered from the immediate threats to life from the Four Horsemen and the Eye of Horus. But her extended family were not so fortunate. Zoe’s mother lost a sister to a hurricane in NYC and an uncle to Famine in Iowa. As young Zoe faced close death for the first time, she had that discussion with her parents about why bad things happen.

The words her parents used may be forgotten but Zoe remembers the message. Some people have more power than others and of those people, a small number who use that power to do bad things because they are bad people. Some people strive for power while others get it as a gift, which is simply life. Mutants are those born with power within them, they do not get to choose if they get power, they do not get to choose what the power is, and they are all people just like us. The power is not how you define them, no one is defined by whom they are, they define themselves by what they do.

As Zoe came to understand her parent’s point of view over the years, she came to make it her own through experience rather than mere acceptance.

POST-APOCALYPSE

After a couple of funerals, Zoe’s world returned to something close to resembling normal, it was just somehow bigger. She was just starting to discover boys, she had her first kiss during the summer break of 2010 and Zoe and her family went to Disney California Adventure Park.

But all the big news happened to other people whom she saw on the News. Zoe paid attention to anything regarding mutants since she could draw parallels between them and the characters from her fantasy novels. She knew of Gene Nation and the Brotherhood, but only what the media showed.

PURIFIERS

15 going on 35 and Zoe went through a brief highly cynical phase in the wake of all the bigotry happening in New York combined with a failed relationship. She turned Buddhist for all of four months, ending on her 16th birthday. She also decides that Giant robots belong in Anime until Humanity is a bit more mature. There was a war going on, but she wasn’t yet the right person to join it. That would come later.

SKRULLS

Some people are more open, more prepared for the reality of extra terrestrial life, Zoe would like to think she was one of them. Between sci-fi movies, fantasy books, a myriad of video games, and the reality of giant robots and people with superpowers, Aliens were practically expected. Taking over the world with mass telepathy was not so expected. It was better than the oft portrayed alternative of genocidal intent. They came and went in less than a week from Zoe’s perspective and turned out very anticlimactic. Which was probably for the best. She would learn the full truth in history class nearly a year later at Xavier’s.

CURRENT HISTORY

The day before Zoe’s 17th birthday, she got the gift that keeps on giving, an active X-gene. It activated in the early hours of the morning on the 25th Jan, for just a few minutes. In that time, Zoe’s mind and consciousness was recreated as a psychic entity that would reside in her skeleton. Her body, no longer with a mind that could drive heart or lungs, did nothing more than die. It was more than enough to wake her up from the last sleep of her life. When she discovered she couldn’t breathe properly and couldn’t yell for help, that’s when the panic set in.

She ran down stairs and shook her parents awake almost violently. Mum took charge instantly while Dad tried to reassure/help/diagnose his daughter. Zoe remembers, it was eight minutes until the ambulance arrived. Mum rode with Zoe while Dad and little brother followed in the family car. Not the parents, not the paramedics and not the doctors or nurse could work out how Zoe was so animated and yet dead at the same time. Zoe had no heart beat, no muscle control at all and because she was obviously still moving about in close to a panic, and the random uncontrolled voice inside peoples head that belonged to a very scared girl had everyone on edge.

But it was the voice of an 11 year old kid, Zachery, which pushed people beyond their sanity with his innocent exclamation of Zombie. Roughly half an hour into the ensuing chaos of setting up quarantine, walked in two Shield agents. Zoe found out that the agents had some sort of case at the University of South Dakota but never found out more. The two agents used their authority to calm the panic and took charge of the mess surrounding the living dead girl. A brief review of the medical files and assessment of Zoe’s condition – she was showing some sort of psychic ability and definitely not trying to eat brains – they made their decision and took Zoe the “kind of zombie” into their custody. Anita who would not let go of her daughter was allowed to go with them. In a round about way, where Zoe got first hand experience of rigor mortis, she and her Mother were taken to Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

The timing was quite fortunate because the school technically was not open for another week. There was some argument about how safe New York currently was after the recent Leviathan attack, and various states of warfare involving mutantkind. Fears were mostly quashed but never fully alleviated.

Within 24 hours of arriving at Xavier’s, Zoe was treated by very skilled, intelligent, and friendly doctors. She was irradiated which stopped her decaying any further and fitted into a temporary hazmat suit while more permanent clothing arrangements could be made that would continue to keep her necrotic flesh sterile.

That was how Zoe became a mutant and enjoyed her 17th birthday. She would actually get to celebrate her 17th a week later when she and her mum went home, though in Zoe’s case, it was a brief overnight stay. While staying at the school, Zoe would continue to stay in touch with family via text and email, and she became much closer to her Mum who was always the most supportive person.

Mutant School was pretty exciting from Zoe’s point of view. She had taken up a codename – “Xombie” with an X because of X-Men – and was forming friendships with all manner of very interesting people. She told her Mum and family about most of the things that happened but left out the more scary stuff, Zoe didn’t want her Mum to worry more than she already did. Over the year, Zoe finished high school and trained hard so that she could one day join the Legacy Squad. She enjoyed the training but she did sometimes get jealous of the other students with their “better” powers. It was a busy, exciting and very eventful year.

Only a few weeks went by with out incident, almost enough time for Zoe to get settled. Thankfully her powers did not come with much of a training cost. All was well until Madbombs are detonated and only three weeks later, the School Headmaster gets murdered. It’s not a great start to the school year.

And then Spiral puts a bounty on the head of every hero while publicly executing Daredevil. Zoe would have been having second third thoughts about the safety at the school if she wasn’t already dead. Things just get more fun when David Alleyne A.K.A Prodigy takes run of the school that same day, but not for too long when the computer pros extraordinaire save the day.

Over the next few months, several X-Men get kidnapped. This eventually culminates in August when Zombie Cyclops leading his Dark X-Men to attack the school in force. Zoe working as Xombie, gets caught by a stray blast, lost the flesh from two fingers and got trapped under debris. And that was her total real world combat experience. The good guys won of course, in no small part to the love and effort of Jean Grey.

Two weeks later, Vulcan, brother to Cyclops, headmaster of Xavier’s, goes all pyroclastic on the world which the X-Men rush once more to save. A month after that and the skies went dark. Considering all Zoe had seen in the last year, this was almost blasé. The storm of events reaches its crescendo when Jean Grey and Victor Von Doom go head to head. Both wield a portion of the power of the Phoenix, ripping away more and more power from the other Phoenixes until theirs are the only two. In a winner take all battle, Jean proves to be the stronger. Zoe got to sit on the sidelines and learn all about this second hand, as a student should.

In the aftermath of the Illuminati plot, Zoe finishes her high school education and trains so that one day she will be a worthy hero.

SAMPLE RP POST:

Jan 28th, 2013
Midday

After Anita Beals had left the room and closed the door behind her, Zoe went flop on the bed. She was laying face down in the hazmat suit and her face was smearing the fine film of moisture on the inside of the face mask. Zoe wanted to cry, wanted to scream, wanted to sleep, she even wanted to die, but she couldn’t. No amount of wanting would let her do any of these things, she couldn’t, not anymore.

Zoe felt tired to the bone and yet she didn’t. It was an odd sensation that she couldn’t quite describe even to herself. Emotionally drained was a close approximation but even that wasn’t quite right. The last three and a half days had been something of a blur. Zoe knew she hadn’t been thinking, merely reacting to her change. She clenched her fists and forced herself to sit up. She looked around the spartan room and remembered that the school she was now enrolled in wasn’t open for another few days. Even now the finishing touches were still being applied since the whole thing had been rebuilt. She walked over to the mirror and examined her face. It was the face of a dead person, sunken eyes, pale flesh, purple lips…a zombie’s face. Zoe put her arms up straight and lurched around the room, but her inability to go “braaaiiinnnssss” spoiled the effect she was aiming for. She flopped back on the bed, face up in resignation.

After some time, Zoe struggled her arms out of their sleeves and applied the eye drops she needed. The bottle was kept in the pocket of her jumper she wore under the hazmat suit. Since her hands were free and she was alone, she poked her dead body to see what she could feel. Another weird experience, her body was more sensitive closer to bone, like her forehead and collar bone. Her tummy felt almost nothing at all, despite her normally being ticklish. She groped her breasts and felt not even a tingle. Resignation overwhelmed her again and her arms found their way back into the sleeves. At least she hadn’t died a virgin, a fact her parents would never know.

Zoe started counting pros and cons on her fingers. Con: no more icecream or pizza or chocolate. Pro: no getting fat, and no more vegetables. Pro: all night video game marathons. Pro: Halloween will rule. Con: Easter eggs will suck. Con: boys were no longer exciting. Pro: can’t get pregnant and no more periods. Con: can’t be a Mum. Zoe stopped counting after that, too depressed.

More time passed, it could have been one minute or one hour, Zoe paid no attention. Eventually Anita walked back into the room and Zoe jumped up and hugged her Mum.

Pro: Hugs still rule.

Sorry for the wait, I've been out of town. I just want to say though that I really like this app and it is a great example of being able to do a history in a concise manner, but still showing all the understandings.

Please post in the list updater and feel free to ask staff if you need help getting started.
