April 3, 2014 Afternoon - Around 2 pm (It was a long flight.) Danielle Moonstar missed too much. The weddings. The babies. Enemies revived and friendships lost. She wasn’t there to see the calamity of the Illuminati, but even back in Colorado she felt the chaos deep to her bone. As the world around her continued, she stayed by his side- the one man that meant more to her than anyone else in the world, Black Eagle, her grandfather. The time had come to let others care for him. She could no longer provide to him what professionals could, but leaving was in its own way painful. She fought it, but then the day came when she couldn’t bring him light or laughter due to his disease. Letting go was painful, but it had to be done. It was time to move on. At her very core, Dani was never a formal type of gal. She didn’t RSVP or send thank you notes. All of that seemed like fluff and unnecessary. The girl was a free spirit. She moved where the wind took her. When the time came for her to make a decision, she simply woke up one morning and packed her bags knowing she’d find herself back home in New York. Not a sucker for teary goodbyes, she left her parents a note that she was returning to New York, though she would have much rather pulled a Matt Damon escape a la Good Will Hunting. Mothers though, especially Dani’s, had good reason to worry considering the scrapes and battles she’d been through. Ideally, Dani wanted was to sneak back into the mansion unnoticed and simply pick up where she left off, which meant reclaiming her old room and kicking out anyone who dared occupy it. It also included the possibility of her being asked to open her heart to close friends when they knew very well she hated being an emotional girly girl. If they wanted her to immediately open up, they were going to have to work for it. Jogging around the track. Push ups. Archery lessons. Something where she could focus on an activity when the emotion was too intense and they needed to pause just to breathe. Her good friends would know that much about her. Dani fretted the entire flight and once she landed in New York, she still hadn’t decided what to say or do other than to unpack her clothes and just show up. Somehow though, she suspected old friends would want her to make a big deal out of her return. That was how her friends worked. They were a lively bunch, and usually she went along with the ride or she was the leader pulling them along. Yet, this time she just wanted to hide until she made up her mind as friends expected answers and she had none she was willing to share. Well, maybe that wasn’t correct. Rahne always managed to get Dani to open up which was a talent not many in the mansion possessed. Once the taxi dropped her off she knocked on the front door and was let in by a new student. After she chided him for just opening the door all willy nilly to a stranger she began walking towards her room, but not before she stopped to look at the old place. This was home. She dropped the bags she was carrying and just stood there taking in a deep breath, the smell of old wood and classic furniture that always had a distinct smell to her. “I’m surprised Rahne isn’t here yet.” Not that she expected her friend to come crashing through the building to say hi, but maybe deep down inside if she were honest, she wanted to receive a welcoming committee, with her best friend as part of that ensemble. Before she spoke to herself again she stayed quiet. Talking to yourself was never a good idea in Dani’s opinion; she picked up her bags ready to sneak back to her old room, when she heard the strangest thing. Unable to help herself, she began to grin. “It’s about time you showed up to say hi. I was worried you were getting lazy on me.” |

The Russell Cabin, moments before Dani's arrival... "Uch, Greg, ye've gone an' made a right awful mess of yuirself, ye know that?" Rahne remarked, as she retrieved a baby wipe from the plastic container that housed them and went about cleaning her baby son after removing his diaper. The smell was, honestly, something she'd quickly gotten used to, but it was still quite pungent. But alas, this was what babies did, after all. Of course, cleaning this one was a bit more of a chore than other babies thanks to the fur... and possibly his tendency to fuss when being cleaned... but mother was determined and stubborn, and was not about to be defeated on this point. Greg was just going to have to deal with- "OH!" a jolt to the brain caused her to cry out, an unexpected stimulation of a connection long since gone dormant, a feeling that was once as normal as breathing air, as drinking water suddenly come back. She'd gotten used to its absence, had forgotten how jarring that initial contact could be, as a feeling of joy and nostalgia came over her, but neither of them her own. She barely wiped the tear that had begun to run down the right side of her face away before she noticed that Greg was crying. "Oh, oh no, no no no..." she frowned, quickly affixing a new diaper to him, tossing the old one into a waiting plastic bag, and picking her son up, bouncing him on her shoulder as he cried. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry, I am... I dinnae mean to startle you, ye poor dear... oh... shh shh..." she felt torn. She had to go, but she couldn't while he was upset like this. How would that be, to take him and just run while he was crying? She felt awful, but he had to be calmed, he had to... A few moments got him calmed, and she held him out a bit, taking a tissue and wiping his face dry. "There ye go, ye wee dear. That's much better. I promise ye - that particular outburst is never happenin' again. I'll make sure it won't," she said, glancing back to the door for a moment before setting him down in his crib as she picked up the baby sling, affixing it over her shoulder. He seemed to like this thing, from both her own experiences with it and Jack's, even though she thought it made her look... well, she had no idea how to compare it, but it was an odd look she felt. "So what do ye say, Greg? Would ye like t' meet yuir other auntie? Would ye? Oh, I bet ye would," she smiled, selecting out a light green jumper and slipping him into it, careful to thread the tail through the back. "There we go. There's muh handsome wee man," Rahne smiled as she lifted him up and slipped him into the baby sling, adjusting it so it would be comfortable for him and minimize his potential for kicking her in the ribs. And then, they were off, Rahne's pace quick, but just shy of running so as to not jostle him. *** "Oh, lazy am I?" Rahne asked as she made her way in to where Dani was clearly waiting for her. "Dani, I wish I could be lazy. I wish ye could have called, or emailed, or somethin' too, but och, I hardly get what I wish for lately." She teased, but really - she would have taken Dani if she had been shipped here in a crate. Already that feeling in her brain, that slight murmur of their psionic link, began to feel normal again. It wasn't quite there yet, but it was on its way. "Och, I cannae keep this pretense up, I've missed you," Rahne relented after a very brief moment, and reached over for a side hug, pulling Dani in close, keeping Greg on one side and Dani on the other. With that one free hand, she pulled the outer rim of the sling back, to reveal the baby who had nuzzled into his mother's abdomen. "An' here's the wee troublemaker himself," Rahne said with a smile, as Greg turned his head around to look at the newcomer with curious, bright golden eyes. "Can we say hullo, Greg? Hmm? No? S'alright, I know ye mean it." She looked to Dani and smiled. She had to show him off. She just had to. She had never been more proud of anything in her entire life. And she would have been utterly negligent if she hadn't shared that with one of the dearest people in her life. "One month old today, actually. Yuir timing is impeccable, if nae surprising." |

"Oh, lazy am I?" Rahne asked as she made her way in to where Dani was clearly waiting for her. "Dani, I wish I could be lazy. I wish ye could have called, or emailed, or somethin' too, but och, I hardly get what I wish for lately." “Plus, I’m not the calling type,” she answered as she looked on at Rahne and the baby who was hidden from her in the meantime. While, she wanted to pay attention to the little one, the link they shared began to mend again. It could never truly be broken and Dani realized a part of the reason they were so close was all because of how her mutation let her in Rahne’s world. The sensation was always so strange and yet familiar. It was the closest to a telepath she would ever be and quite frankly, being a telepath would suck. She loved Rahne and respected her and that was what made their bond special. Yet, there were just some feral and animal minds out there that she had no intention of peeking in, if she could help it. "Och, I cannae keep this pretense up, I've missed you," Rahne relented. “Me too,” she murmured and held on as tightly as possible. Dani could feel the sting of tears and she quickly rubbed her eyes before they told Rahne just how terribly she had been missed. She had to have known, but there was no point in making a spectacle of herself either. Once they let go of each other she stepped back to look at the way the baby had been wrapped up, wondering if the child of Rahne SInclair would have taken after his mother. “So, you going to introduce me to the other man in your life?” She teased, because she didn’t want to focus on the fact that she had missed everything from the baby shower to her friend’s wedding. Though it was comforting that the two women could pick up where they left off, even if there was now a new addition to the family. "An' here's the wee troublemaker himself," Rahne said with a smile, as Greg turned his head around to look at the newcomer with curious, bright golden eyes. "Can we say hullo, Greg? Hmm? No? S'alright, I know ye mean it." The baby was beyond gorgeous and it made Dani bubble with laughter as she saw Greg had a strong independent spirit even at his young age. This baby was going to give Rahne hell. Good for him. (As long as he wasn’t doing anything too terrible now.) “Just look at you,” she said leaning in towards baby Greg. “I’m Auntie Dani. We’re gonna have lots of fun together and get into all kinds of trouble, just don’t tell your mom, ok?” She stood up straight to look at Rahne as she couldn’t tell how old Greg was. Dani was terrible at that sort of thing. If they wore diapers then they were all six months to her or younger. She refused to acknowledge toddler ages, because urban legend told her they hit this terrible two stage, and right now Greg was too cute to one day become a little beast of a child. "One month old today, actually. Yuir timing is impeccable, if nae surprising." “One month. Oh Rahne. He just...he’s just so beautiful. I can’t believe I’ve missed so much.” She extended her hand and lightly touched Greg’s cheek as they tended to be so soft and adorably chubby at that age. “I wish I met you sooner, so we could have teased your momma a long time ago. And I’m sorry I wasn’t there, but I’m here now. You don’t need to say hi to me now. You’ll learn to love me. Your mother did, after all.” She laughed and looked back up at her old friend. “Rahney, I have so much to do. I gotta sneak into my old apartment without anyone noticing. Stealing some of Sam’s classes away from him,” and she said that with a sly grin, because being bossy towards a Guthries never ended well. Eh, he would live. “Let the rest of the team know I’m back. Talk to Doug, punk Roberto, just everything.” Even thinking about the list of what she had to do was exhausting. SIghing she picked up her bags again and looked at the little one lovingly. “I’m going to dump this in my room and smother you with kisses the minute I’m not carrying this crap,” she looked up at Rahne and sighed as they had many adult things to discuss in front of the baby. “Tell me what I need to know and who I need to yell at. Or better yet, tell me how Jack and you are doing now with Greg. I can always scream at people later.” |

"Och, Dani," Rahne shook her head as Dani expressed regrets. There were times, yes, when Rahne had wished Dani were here. Hard times and good times. When Scott had been killed, when Amara had been taken, she had wished that she had Dani Moonstar nearby, to simply lean on. For Dani's strength of spirit had always been so potent that it was hard to not feel emboldened by it. And to share in the good times as well as take support in the bad - Rahne would have liked that very much. But she knew full well how important it was that Dani help with her family, with her home. She would never have begrudged her that, never in a million years. Besides - "Ye've always been here," Rahne shook her head, reaching over with her one free hand and double-tapping the left side of her chest. "Just like I know I was always right there by yuir side back home." She may have pulled a good lot of people in to be her surrogate family over the years, but few - perhaps simply two, had ever been as near and dear as Dani Moonstar. One, she married. The other was off on her honeymoon to the fastest man in the world. "Yuir old apartment? Well. I know ye've nae been with us since we rebuilt, but... we made sure yuir room went untouched. Some of us are rather protective in that sense," Rahne said with a smirk. Same relative place, same relative position in the floor plan. "'Tis already keyed in t' yuir ID number. As f'r who ye need t' be yellin' at... well, most everyone's behavin' themselves well enough. Sam's sister Paige has come t' stay with us, so-" "Emmmbembembah," Greg babbled from his position in the little papoose, as if to add in his own two cents. "Oh, that's right, thanks f'r the reminder - ye'll probably have t' give Doug an earful or so, he's just as much a mess as ever, an' goodness - maybe he'll listen t' you. Every time I try t' set him right he goes right back on the backtrack. Other than that? Ye couldn'a picked a better time to make it back. Scott an' Jean are out, Logan's out, Avery's out - place is startin' t' feel a wee bit empty sometimes." " |

Rahne had this talent at making other people feel good about themselves and she couldn’t tell after all these years if it simply came naturally to the Scotswoman or if she worked at being the cool confidante that others could go to for aid. She preferred to think she was a natural as everything about her seemed genuine and she never once felt her friend was putting on a show. It was something she wanted to emulate from her friend, but she had to admit to herself she was much better at intimidating than making others feel at ease. When Rahne mentioned the mansion having been rebuilt, Dani made a face, mad at herself for allowing to let such a major event slip from her mind. It felt selfish to simply be so trapped in her own personal family tragedy that the tragedies of the school were pushed aside. It made her wonder what else she forgot. She remembered reading about caretakers and how they had the tendency to forget things due to the high levels of stress they were under. Now, she would never dare say caring for her grandfather was stressful, but it was a difficult time. To her admitting such a thing was tantamount to saying she didn’t want to care for him. That was never the case. "'Tis already keyed in t' yuir ID number. As f'r who ye need t' be yellin' at... well, most everyone's behavin' themselves well enough. Sam's sister Paige has come t' stay with us, so-" “Oh, another Guthrie. I hope she’s not like-” but she stopped. Eh, now wasn’t the time to bring up the black sheep of the Guthrie family. The little jerk. She also heard about Amara and what happened to her during the Illuminati and deep down inside she hoped she didn’t cross paths with either Jay or Forge as the two would be getting an earful from her. On some days it upset her more that someone who shared so much in common with her would let this happen. Other days, she felt Jay’s betrayal was far worse. She could never make up her mind, so for the time being she was grateful their paths would not be crossing anytime soon. A part of her knew if they did meet it would simply be one of the most ugly fights Dani would have ever had and you didn’t need to use your powers to bring out all the raw and ugly emotions associated with hate and anger. Pure anger had a way of just hurting people more. Scott an' Jean are out, Logan's out, Avery's out - place is startin' t' feel a wee bit empty sometimes." “Wait, Scott, Jean, Logan, and Avery are out? The wedding. Oh no. I was transferring my grandfather to that facility in Boulder and I just...I missed it. Dammit. I missed yours too. I hate that Rahne.” They walked comfortably heading back to what was her new (or old) room. “How am I going to make this up to all my friends. And Doug. Did he give you that present for your baby shower? Otherwise, that’s a mandatory butt kicking.” She lugged her stuff looking at Rahne and Greg from the corner of her eye enjoying the walk and ready to throw her stuff down, so they could be more comfortable. She couldn’t estimate how long the trek took, but once she got to that room of hers she so loved, and keyed in her ID number the door opened and Dani dropped all her belongings pulling out a random book from her bag and using it to keep the door open, before she fell back on the bed. “The flight was too long. Make yourself comfortable. Let Greg play. I might have some of the stuffed animals in my bag that I got from the carnival that one year. Bet the carnie wasn’t expecting me to shoot everything perfectly.” Dani moved over on the bed and sat up when a thought came to her. “Rahne, you realize you are now the first official grown up from our group of friends. Married. Baby. Stable. Avery got married. Now they’re going to expect the rest of us to do that. We need to marry off Roberto to Piotr, before people start bugging me. Plus, I think Roberto would look better in a wedding dress than Piotr, so we need to convince him that he’ll be the prettier one in the relationship." Dani then looked out the door wondering if they would come running to her room any minute. "Where is my favorite bromance, ‘Berto and Piotr anyways?” |

"Paige is fine, really," Rahne said with a smile, having more than an inkling of what Dani was referring to. It was a sore point for all of them, that he would ever opt to go with those people. She just hoped that whatever he was doing these days, it certainly wasn't evil anymore. Either way, she didn't particularly feel like tracking him down. It wasn't her place to do so. Surely, Sam had the situation with his brother well in hand. She trusted him with that. "She's rather new to the whole mutant thing, as it were, so some of us have been helpin' her adjust," they made it to the room with no real troubles, Dani opening the door just as Rahne told her she'd be able to. Once they got in, and Dani dropped her bags and propped the door open, Rahne took a seat on the bed and unclasped the baby carrier, pulling Greg out and and lifting him up, with a smile and a "woooo!", which caused a little giggle to sound out from the baby. "No, no, no. I'll nae have ye guiltin' yuirself, alright? You an' I both know that's my thing, nae yuirs," Rahne chuckled, shaking her head. But how long had it been since she's truly sent herself on a heavy guilt trip? Scott's death? That had been about a year ago, perhaps longer - she supposed she could call that an improvement. "I told ye - ye were there, in spirit if nae physical presence. Besides, ye had a very important reason t' be where ye were. He needed you, an' that ye were able to be there for him in that time o' need... that was truly as important a thing as you could do. I'm just sorry we dinnae have the time to stop by an' visit ye." She chuckled, shaking her head as she lay Greg down on the bed and tickled his tummy a bit, causing a squeal of a giggle to come out as he kicked his legs in response. "If'n ye dinnae mind riskin' him tearin' up one o' those toys, ye're more 'n welcome t' let him play around with it. I tell ye, Dani - I worry about how it'll be when he starts crawlin' around. He was quick to arrive, ye know - carried 'im for maybe five months before he was ready, so we really dinnae know how quickly he'll catch on. How fast his teeth'll come in, how soon 'fore he can hold his head up on his own an' crawl an' all o' that." Rahne frowned slightly, glancing to the side. The first? She hadn't really thought of it like that, but... "Heh - ye may be right on that count, Dani - it certainly was nae my intention though, I'll tell ye that. It all just... happened. Life just seems to blur past us sometimes, aye? It was just yesterday after all that we were all wee gangly teenagers, an' the lot of you were makin' periodic field trip visits to Muir, which were the highlights of the whole month f'r me..." Rahne sighed, shaking her head slowly before looking back to Dani. Her gaze was blank for a moment, before she suddenly, and loudly laughed, a good, thoroughly amused belly laugh that held out for a bit. "Oh, sorry, sorry - had a mental image there of Roberto's lovely lovely weddin' gown an I couldn't help muhself. Honestly, though? I've nae seen so much of him since he an' Amara came back from Nova Roma. Granted, this wee little bugger here takes up so much o' muh time an' attention that I may have just missed out on speakin' with 'em." |

In this new modern tech strewn world nothing traveled faster then information. With live streaming, twitter, Facebook, news alerts, text messages, cell phones, the second something became known by one person it could be known by everyone and that sort of living made Doug Ramsey happy. The young guy who never met a language he didn't like or couldn't talk believed in information and its power and more importantly it's access. What was known to some should be known to all, at least so far as important things as news were concerned some things had to remain private. When the message had beeped on his phone he had almost missed it. He was levels deep playing Minecraft and the last thing he wanted was to be disturbed when he was getting his game on, but when the phone vibrated for the second time he begrudgingly picked it up. "This better be good" he muttered to himself as he flicked the iPhones touch screen and the message appeared across. he jumped up so quickly one knocked the chair he was sitting in over. As though he possessed phenomenal speed the linguist was off running down halls, darting in between people, making apologies where he needed and then he was there almost running by her door. "Dani!" Doug said enthusiastically rushing to her and embracing his beloved friend in a tight hug. "How? When? Why.." He had a million questions and he was afraid for a spit second to let her go lest she disappear again on them. Luckily Rahne was there as well to prove the whole Dani affair was not some sort of huge tease or mirage. "Rahne. Dani's here!" He said stating what was evidently clear to Rahne and even little Grim who Doug could hear even rolling bhis eyes at him. "Listen to me. Just call me Captain obvious of course you know she's here you're here. Wow. It's just we- I wasn't expecting you. I hadn't heard from you in a while and I'd been emailing and well I sorta assumed you'd just forgotten about us back here. It's just so good to see you!" And unable to contain his enthusiasm Doug went in and hugged her again. "Okay. Okay that was the last time of that I swear. So fill us in what have you been up to. Oh I should call Sam and let him know you're here and the others too. This is for keeps right? You're staying around for a bit right? I don't think I could stand you leaving us again you know I don't handle loss well Im still grieving Firefly getting canceled and that was years ago." |

Dani let out a loud laugh as they teased Roberto and she sorely wished he had been there to witness that clever joke, but she knew she’d eventually run into him. There was plenty of time to make fun of Da Costa. Getting settled she was content just sitting in her bed when she heard a familiar voice. Good ol’ Doug would be the one to be overjoyed by her appearance and in between hugging and his sputtering, she didn’t know what to do, other than to hug him back ferociously for old times sake. “I’m sorry I haven’t emailed you back.” "Okay. Okay that was the last time of that I swear. So fill us in what have you been up to. Oh I should call Sam and let him know you're here and the others too. This is for keeps right? You're staying around for a bit right? I don't think I could stand you leaving us again you know I don't handle loss well Im still grieving Firefly getting canceled and that was years ago." “Oh, I remember. Remember you made me watch that marathon and you got upset when I fell asleep halfway?” She teased, thoroughly avoiding the subject of Sam as she didn’t know why she didn’t want him to know other than the timing wasn’t right. Now what that meant, she hadn’t a clue and decided it was a result of leftover stress. “Though if you keep hugging me, I’m pretty sure you’re going to end up suffocating me. So...I’m back. For keeps. And you have a lot to tell me, right? Don’t get shy on me now. Tell me all your deep dark secrets, before I find out from Rahne what trouble you’ve been up too.” Taking his hand she took him to her bed so they could all sit comfortably as she watched his reaction. He had that loveable guilty look, which meant she had to listen to him without blowing up first and trying to solve the problem in less than fifteen minutes. She didn’t consider herself one of those fiery personalities, but sometimes it was just best to shoot straight. “Oh you look like I just asked you if your cat died. Come on Doug, tell me what new things are going on in your life. Look, I’ll even start. I’m here to start over. Rahne had a baby and is a full fledged adult. Now its your turn. Tell us all those deep dark secrets of yours. And no, not watching the Firefly movie on opening night doesn’t count.” |

Greg was a bit confused as his mom and this new lady laughed, loudly and enthusiastically, and the sound of it seemed to disturb him a bit, as a deep frown crossed his features and his eyes widened. He was on the verge of crying before his mother's hands descended upon him and gently tickled him, fingers scritching softly at his sides, causing him to giggle a bit as she made a silly, smiling face at her baby boy. It was still a learning experience, being a mom. She had to learn first hand what set her baby off, what upset him, what didn't. Loud noises sometimes got him startled and upset. Other times, he caused them and thrived upon them. It was a hard thing to predict, but she was beginning to understand very well how to calm him down. He enjoyed attention, he enjoyed physical contact. He liked using his hands and grabbing and touching things. He liked putting things in his mouth, and she wondered if he was going to be teething soon. She was still tickling the baby when Doug entered, all enthusiasm and verbosity, his excitement getting ahead of him. 'Aye, I noticed," Rahne chuckled, before lifting a hand up and tapping a finger to her left temple. "Remember?" Rahne glanced to Dani, as Dani attacked like a jackhammer. It was one of Dani's indelible traits - something she probably couldn't have worked around if she tried. Something was up with Doug. Something had been up with Doug for a long time now. Something he wasn't telling her. Something she couldn't figure out, or maybe wasn't willing to figure out, but Dani could. She looked to Doug as he was put on the spot. She felt sorry for that, really she did, but it had to be done. If she was being honest with herself, she'd have come to the realization that when Doug Ramsey was concerned, Rahne had a pair of blinders on. She wanted him to be happy, she wanted him to get the things a good guy like him deserved in life. She thought he was getting that. But was he? Things didn't add up and she couldn't figure out why. "You an' Layla ought to be takin' that trip down the aisle soon, aye? It's been a while." |
