----------

Roberto had become accustomed to living a certain type of life. He was a passionate man, driven by the whims and flourishes of his heart, for better and for worse. And that passion led to him expressing his humanity in the most extreme of ways. It was high octane, top gear stuff; he lived in the fast lane, on the seat of danger, with nary but the most precarious of holds on the steering wheel of his life. And though there were many a time where he threatened to crash and burn in the most spectacular of train wrecks, he always managed to pull through in the end.

Nova Roma was one of those near car wrecks. 2013 had been nothing but a series of obstacles, all one-way death traps trying to coax him to an untimely demise. Perhaps that was why, for the last two months or so, he decided to take a step back and just...not thrust himself into near-suicidal engagements over and over again. It wasn't that he didn't have faith in his fantastic ability to come out relatively unscathed - truth be told, after all he had seen and all he had been through, he was experiencing something of an invincibility complex - but he was tired of putting his body on the line. He was tired of worrying for his friends and family's safety. He was tired of cleaning up mess after mess after mess.

All he wanted to do was kick back with a good brew and relax. Maybe play a videogame or two. And so that's what he did. He took a few weeks leave from the school and returned to his native Rio de Janeiro to work on his tan and his sanity, and after building and edifying that, he returned to Xavier's, ready to take up his post as resident gym teacher and titular X-Man with a smile on his face.

Of course, there was a price to pay for happiness and security. And that price exacted itself on his general motivation for doing basically anything in general. For weeks he woke up only when his biological clock deemed it appropriate, and sleep deep into the night after his eyelids fell in exhaustion. For weeks, his only reliable source of exercise had been found in his recreational surfing during the day, and dancing during the night. And now, now that he was to return to business as usual, he found that the nicely regimented habit he had set up for himself fastidiously when it came to his physical conditioning had been broken.

And boy, was it a bitch to try and get back.

Yawning, the young man dragged his feet down the halls, already 23 minutes late due to his repeated slamming of the 'snooze' button. His eyes were barely open, a result of both his exhaustion and his extreme sensitivity to light at the time being. More out of habit than any cognitive decision making on his part, he navigated into the gym without much difficulty, only to wander into a rack of dumbells once inside and send a couple of 5lb sets rolling onto the floor.

The jarring crash shocked him awake and into action. Sheepishly, he got to his knees, gathering together the wayward weights, all the while looking around with the hopes that no one had seen him in his not-so-finest hour.

Of course, such a hope just had to be in vain.

Dani was already past her warm up routine and was simply using the pull up bar as another form of exercise. She could have kept it simple and completed chin ups, but she wanted something a bit more challenging, so she decided to hang upside down and do sit ups in that fashion, having read in a magazine somewhere that inverse pull ups were better for the body if you had the upper body strength. She had paused between sets when she saw lazy Da Costa straggle in and knock over a few weights, which he was quickly putting away to hide the evidence.

Allowing herself to laugh at Roberto’s misfortune she looked at him from her upside down view and cut to the chase.

“Can you even lift 5 lb weights anymore?”

Not waiting for a response she casually and flipped off and landed gracefully on the ground, bowing towards Roberto.

“Oh, just look at you. You’re like a FatBerto now. Shouldn’t you have been at the gym more than half an hour ago? Tsk, tsk FatBerto. It starts off with a bit of pudge and then you’ll end up looking like an obese cow. Though lifting the baby weights is a start, I guess.”

She always knew she pushed the teasing a bit too hard with Roberto, but if anyone could handle her moxy it would be him, or he would end up crying about it, which she could later on tease him about too. This was probably oen of the things she most liked about their friendship, because they could literally tell each other almost anything and still be good friends at the end of the day. There was no other man who could tell her, her butt looked big in a pair of jeans. If Roberto did it, she’d thank him for it and then get to the gym as fast as possible.

Quickly ending up by his side she playfully punched him. They already talked a few times, but nothing very productive happened as Roberto and Dani seemed to enjoy the lighter moments. They both knew they could seek one another during the hard times and have a heart to heart conversation, but that wasn’t the magic in their friendship. It was these stupid moments. And things like getting away with calling him FatBerto.

“Come on. Let’s have a little competition. I lift more weights than you- you owe me a week’s worth of training at 5 am. If you can actually manage to lift a 25 lb free weight and don’t collapse from the pressure I can give you something in return. How does that sound for a friendly competition? Don’t worry Berto, I won’t embarrass you too much.”

That laugh cut through the atmosphere, and instinctively Roberto knew who it belonged to. After all, it was with the sound of laughter that he grew, with the smiles and companionship that came with being a young, insecure mutant at Xavier's School. The bonds that were forged in those early formative years were steel - thicker than blood, more resilient than stone. Perhaps that was why, rather than pricking his at times delicate ego, that smile drew an unbidden smile to Roberto da Costa's face.

Looking sheepish, he rubbed at the back of his neck as he turned to Dani. "Heh. Figures, you'd be here. Don't you like, ever sleep? Ever?" He pressed, rhetorically, only to be met with rhetoric of her own. Rhetoric that, this time, succeeded at needling him.

"Hey! I can lift more than you, Dani. With or without superstrength," he insisted proudly, before wandering towards her. He could smell the competition in the air - it was always there when the Cheyene was around, she hated losing just as much as he did. He even managed to look entirely stoic and not even a little impressed when she did that graceful flip off the bar, which was really cool. But not to him. Nope.

"Fatberto!" He cried out suddenly, offended and incredulous. "Are you serious?! There's not even 5 ounces of fat below my neck! If anything, I don't need to go to the gym every five minutes - 'cause I'm that fit!" Her proposed challenge was considered, it was carefully reviewed and dissected, but in the end he shook his head.

"You wanna play? Let's play for real. I'm Fatberto, huh? And you're the picture of peak physical conditioning? Okay. Put your body where your mouth is, Dani." He put his hands on his waist, looking deadly serious as he met her gaze head on. "Let's do a gauntlet. Four events, to test all around physical conditioning. Lifting weights, running, swimming, and maybe a game of basketball. Sound good?"

Just before she responded, he interrupted her with a smirk. "And every time someone loses, they have to take off a piece of clothing. Let's see just how confident you really are, Pocahontas."

She had become so enthusiastic about the gauntlet that one small detail slipped by, but she did catch the Pocahontas reference and shoved FatBerto lightly with a simple, “HEY!” She supposed she did deserve that after his new nickname, but he had to admit her nickname for him was much more clever.

“I can do that.” Dani told him boldly as she reviewed the terms of his dare. Every Time someone loses they have too...oh yeah. FarBerto had now become PerVerto. “Let’s be honest. You just want me to see you naked and the truth is I’m not impressed.” Now if she were to think of a man that had the possibility to make her heart flutter, she wasn’t sure who it would be. Someone strong, steady, and with common sense. Roberto was more playboy than hot fantasy and she didn’t need to see what Mother Earth bestowed upon him. As she thought of who she would want to see in the nude a picture came to mind and she immediately switched gears as she didn’t know why that image came to mind. How embarrassing for her. Must have been the musing on naked men. Feeling she needed to focus, she thought about the only thing that mattered right now.

Doing a quick mental check she reviewed the clothes she had on now. Sneakers, socks, underwear, running shorts, sports bra, and a yoga t-shirt meant for hot yoga classes, but perfect for long sweaty workout sessions.

“And once I get you buck naked, I’m gonna make sure to take a picture and send it to Piotr so he can share it all over the internet with a black caption over your privates that says ‘Pwned by Mirage’.” Dani did the math quickly and only saw herself perhaps having a fierce fight in the weightlifting competition, which meant that one needed to be completed as soon as possible. Logistically, she also wasn’t certain how the swimming competition would work. Were they allowed to change back into their regular clothes and then strip? Or would they be forced to strip then and there? Dammit, she had mostly one piece bathing suits for speed purposes. There was a two piece bikini stashed somewhere....

“Alright, time to start the weightlifting competition. Free weights or machines? Arms or legs? Or both? Also there’s some Kleenex nearby, in case you need to cry after I whoop your ass.”

Walking next to him, she used her hip to bump into him and went to retrieve a dumb bell that was 25 lbs. Pure baby stuff. She just wanted to see how far Berto would go now. If he was truly in it to win it, he might even suggest they do a few bench press exercises, which meant she had to suggest it before he did.

“Alright let’s start with a bench press exercise. Maybe 50 lbs? Start off slow and see how high we can work up too? I’ll spot you. I won’t even try to make you laugh or scare you this time. Scout’s honor.”
