Elle tensed up slightly as she felt that touch to her hair, relaxing after a moment. She cautiously lifted her head and peeked over the edge of the door, relieved to see Zita had wiped off most of the mess. Her eyes were already all red and watery, although she used her sleeve to wipe her face off again. She nodded a little at the reassurances, although it was obvious she wasn't convinced. "This is...exactly what they're afraid of, though."

She looked down at her lap again, worried of what she might see past the agent if she kept her eyes lifted. Elle cringed as Zita threatened her, before her head popped up to scowl at the agent. "That's not funny!" She was ready to yell at the woman, before the arriving vehicles distracted her. Her eyes widened as she immediately suspected more attackers arriving. The SHIELD agents that began piling out to take control of the scene were a relief.

Trying to open the door, careful to step over the mess she'd made, Elle shook her head at the offer. "N-no, I have to...take responsibility." She looked a bit wobbly as she tried to step out of the car. "My mom wouldn't w-want me to be like him. I can't just, like, decide for myself if it's right or wrong or if I should get in trouble or anything." She was still sniffling a bit between words, a few tears dribbling out as she fought hard to control herself, left hand firmly clenching her right arm near the shoulder.

The debris, and worse, outside of the car made her hesitate. Squeezing her eyes closed, she leaned against the taller agent, using her body to block her view. Grasping for her with her free hand, she tried to take hold as she buried her head against her, keeping her eyes shut. "I don't...I don't want to see..." She trailed off into gulps and sniffles, but the meaning was obvious.

It was a bad joke, but it did exactly what it was meant to do: cut the tension just a tiny little bit. Zita was quite pleased to hear that Elle wanted to take full responsibility for the man on the pavement. It was always a good thing when people owned up to their actions no matter how small or big even if said actions came with negative consequences. That was not going to be the case here. At most Ell would have to fill out a couple of papers. There would be a recommendation for therapy as well. Witnessing and partaking in something like what just happened would do a number on anyone that wasn’t used to that sort of thing. Zita stepped aside as she exited the car, looking not so great. “Alright then, the truth it is. It’s probably for the best.” Either way she would back up Elle’s story.

She was on the brink of losing it; that much was plain to see. Zita looked over her shoulder at the body that Elle was so desperately trying to shield herself from seeing. The older woman sighed as she wrapped her arms around her, shifting back to her human form so that the embrace would be more welcoming. She let out a sharp whistle to gain the attention of the agents then nodded to the body. “Okay, sweetie. Just stay close to me.” While two agents, one carrying a body bag, rushed over to the scene Zita guided Elle away from the horror and over to one of the SUVs where she could sit comfortably if need be. Being here with Elle reminded her of a recent event involving the daughter of a friend. She consoled the young girl much like how she was doing now. It made her feel odd, but in a good way. She’d never felt it before.

“Agent Rivera,” said the senior officer on the field. “What happened here?”

She turned to face him, still standing close to Elle. “On the way to the safe house, these assholes rammed us off the road. They shouted some anti-mutant bullshit right before unloading with automatic weapons. I handled the situation accordingly.”

“Hm, I see. At least you kept casualties to a minimum. That’s something.”

Zita shook her head. There were some agents that still were distrustful of her and Cain. Getting over their criminal pasts and the whole Thunderbolt ordeal was hard for a few.

Elle let herself be led away, shuffling along awkwardly as she kept her head down, pressed firmly against the taller woman. She could feel bits of glass and other debris under her shoes, kicked aside as she was herded off to the side of the crime scene. Blinking her eyes open again, she turned and slid into the backseat of the SUV. Thankfully it was facing mostly away from the wrecked vehicles. As long as she didn't look in the mirrors, she'd be fine.

Leaning forward, she let her head rest against the back of the seat in front of her. Tears were still dribbling down as she sniffled, but Elle was starting to get herself somewhat under control. Zita was still looming protectively nearby, filling the open door with her presence. It was actually fairly comforting. She noticed the agent turning to speak to the older man, glancing over as she wiped at her face.

At the word 'casualties' she bit her lip, looking at the floorboard again, chin quivering. She'd heard agents say that before, during some of those bad times she didn't really want to think about. Now she was responsible for one of the names on that list. "C-can I just go home now? P-please? The teachers p-probably already know..." Elle didn't even catch herself calling the mansion 'home' this time. She had too many things to be upset about already.

The ranking agent rubbed his forehead as he looked on the sniffling girl and the woman that’d been assigned to transport her. “Yea, yea you can go on back to that place.” He sighed heavily as he walked away. “This is going to be a shitstorm. I can feel it.”

Zita gently rubbed Elle’s shoulder. She knew that there was going to be some fallout because of what happened. She just didn’t know how much. “I’ll take you back to Xavier’s, but first I need to get cleaned up.” Zita whistled to catch the attention of the agent then pointed to the truck, asking for permission. Without missing a beat he waved off his answer. “Alright,” she said to Elle, “buckle up. This shouldn’t take too long.” Zita climbed into the driver’s seat, cranked up the engine, and then the two of them were off to the safe house. The drive was a short one thankfully because sitting there in human form with remains still on her was not a pleasant feeling. After a quick shower she tossed on a fresh set of clothes and was ready to head out again.

By then the others had arrived and were about to start the process of interrogation. Honestly, Zita wanted to be there to do the questioning since she was the one involved in the attack. And that damage done to her car… she wanted a bit of revenge, but sticking with Elle felt more important. The young girl had just gone through quite the ordeal and needed a familiar face around right now. Once everything had been set into place it was time to head to the Xavier Institute to drop Elle off. Having never been to the place before she was a little excited to see what all of the hype was for. Her sister had been there awhile back and said that it was something special despite the not-so-friendly welcome wagon. SHIELD and the X-people didn’t exactly have the best track record.

As she exited the house Zita looked to Elle with a soft expression. “Let’s get you back home, sweetie.”
