Saturday, 1:25 pm April 26, 2014 Anole paced nervously back and forth in the foyer of the Institute. Today was the day. He'd been exploring his options when he graduated in June, and today he had an interview with someone from SHIELD. He looked down at the business card in his hand. It was someone named 'Ted Altman.' Luckily Mr. Worthington had agreed to sit in on his interview. He couldn't help thinking about what the life of a SHIELD agent would be like. A smile spread across his face as he thought about the international intrigue, traveling the world and possibly saving it. He started humming the James Bond theme as he made a quick turn to the mirror in the foyer, and said in his best Commery voice while adjusting his shirt cuffs, "Borkowshki, Victor Borkowshki." He gave his reflection a quick wink. "Oh, yeah." As confident as he seemed in that quick moment, the doubt quickly began creeping back. What if they don't like me? He thought. What if I'm not what they're looking for? He began to get all nervous again, and began fidgeting with his clothes, gently trying to smooth out wrinkles that weren't there. He was wearing a red, white and blue plaid shirt, black tie, black suit vest, blue jeans and cream colored Chucks on his feet. Not the best outfit for a job interview, but then his good suit was all the way back in Fairbury, Ill., almost eight hundred miles away. Hopefully he wouldn't forget it again when he visited later in the summer. He continued pacing the hall. Shuffling back and forth he would occasionally take a quick look at the security monitor next to the door, but no one yet. Finally the buzzer rang on the monitor signalling someone had arrived. Vic ran up to the monitor to take a look. Well, there was someone standing there. Vic cautiously opened the door and said, "hello?" |

"Hey," Ted greeted the reptilian teen who opened the door. Given the boy's unusual appearance, Ted had debated showing up in his Hulkling form, if only to make the point that Victor wasn't the only one who knew it wasn't easy being green... but he'd ultimately decided not to, arriving instead in human form and his SHIELD uniform, as he usually did. If he needed to shift later to make Victor feel more comfortable, he could do that, but for now it didn't really feel right. Admittedly, nothing much he was doing felt quite right. This wasn't his first recruitment interview, but it was close, and he still wasn't entirely comfortable in the role. But he understood why he'd been selected for it... he was young, personable, and perhaps most relevant for this particular interview, a mutant alumnus of Xavier's. That was why he'd been chosen as a liason to the Institute for recruitment purposes... at least officially. He smiled cheerfully and extended a hand for the teen to shake. "You must be Victor. I'm Ted Altman... nice to meet you. I don't know if you know, but I was a student here myself a few years back, actually. Graduated during the... reconstruction," he added, his lips thinning as they always did when he thought about the Institute's destruction, and the resulting deaths. He looked around the lobby as they walked through it and shook his head. "It never ceases to amaze me how good this place is at bouncing back from whatever the world throws at it... the place and the people. It's a shame it's so often necessary." "But that's history," he continued, snapping himself out of a funk before he entered into it. "And we're here to talk about the future, right? So. How about you start by telling me a little about yourself, and what interests you about SHIELD?" |

You must be Victor. I'm Ted Altman... nice to meet you. I don't know if you know, but I was a student here myself a few years back, actually. Graduated during the... reconstruction." Vic frowned as Ted said that. He then took a close look at him, a vague recollection tugging at his memory. He then asked, "you were here during the Purifier attack? I've been here since Apocalypse." Had he met Ted before and just couldn't remember him? Anole wasn't sure, but something told him he knew Ted from somewhere. "But that's history. And we're here to talk about the future, right? So. How about you start by telling me a little about yourself, and what interests you about SHIELD?" He gave a nervous little laugh. "Yeah, the future." Anole gestured down a corridor and said, "Mr. Worthington wanted to sit in on the interview if that's alright, Mr. Altman. He reserved us one of the conference rooms so we could talk in quiet. It's just down this way." He started walking down the hall. "As for SHIELD, well, I just sort of feel a responsibility to use my abilities to protect people. I mean I was given these powers for a reason, right?" Anole stopped before a wooden door with a brass plaque on it that said, 'Conference.' "Here it is, sir," he said as he smiled up at Ted and opened the door. |

"you were here during the Purifier attack? I've been here since Apocalypse." "Yes, that's right. And in the Savage Land, afterwards. I was only here for a couple of years, though." Ted felt a little sheepish that they'd barely interacted for the two years he'd been at Xavier's, despite being students together... but on the other hand, Victor was several years younger, and Ted had spent most of his time with the kids his own age. He wondered how Victor had handled the destruction of the Institute; the deaths of so many students. He'd been pretty freaked out by it all, himself, and the desire to prevent anything like that from happening to anyone was a large part of what had motivated him to join SHIELD. He wondered whether Victor had reacted similarly. "Mr. Worthington wanted to sit in on the interview if that's alright, Mr. Altman." "Please, call me Ted," he urged, following the student down the hall. "And yes, of course Warren can join us, it's been too long since I've seen him." It was weird being led through Xavier's as though he were an outsider, but he supposed that in some ways he really was at this point. A few years was an entire generation in high school; the only reason he and Victor had overlapped at all was because Victor had come to Xavier's as a younger student. And while Ted continued to visit from time to time, that wasn't at all the same as living here. "There's no reason to be nervous, Victor," he added as they walked, "I promise I don't bite." It didn't take them long to reach the conference room door. "Thank you," he said politely as they entered, then sprawled comfortably in one of the chairs. "Can I just say how weird it is to be on this side of the deask?" Not that there was an actual desk with sides, but he'd meant it metaphorically. "Last time I was in this room Ororo was chastising me over screwing up some security protocols," he recalled, shaking his head. "So, anyway. Wanting to use your abilities to protect people is admirable, and SHIELD's mutant division was set up for precisely that purpose, so that's good. Perhaps you could tell me a little about what you can do, and how you anticipate those abilities being used?" Of course, he already knew a fair bit about the student's abilities, but hearing it in Victor's own words would give him more of a sense of how the young man thought. |

When Victor had first asked him to sit in on a meeting between himself and an agent from SHIELD, Warren had not been exactly thrilled. With all the tensions and difficulties that tended to flare up between the Mansion and SHIELD, and considering Fury’s last visit to the school and the ultimatum he had laid down, it was a little difficult to know that current students were considering moving to the organisation. However, as a teacher, current acting headmaster and a senior X-Man, it was his dusty to ensure that his students did what was best for them. If that was joining SHIELD for Victor, then so be it, he would get all the support available. Right now, however, he was the opposite of supportive; he was running a little late to the meeting and that didn’t sit well with him. However busy he was, Warren tried not to be late for anything involving students, particularly when it was regarding students. There was a small part of him that alongside his desire not to be late, didn’t want Anole to be left alone with a member of SHIELD for too long. Warren knew he was probably being unfair, but he couldn’t help it. Entering the conference room set aside for his meeting, Warren was surprised and more than a little pleased to find that the agent sent for this particular task was one of his former students. “Sorry I’m late, folks. I hope I haven’t missed too much.” He said as he approached both of them and held a hand out to shake with the agent. “Ted, it’s good to see you again. How are you doing?” Warren asked, moving to pull up a chair and join them at the table. |

Perhaps you could tell me a little about what you can do, and how you anticipate those abilities being used? "Well, I have a lot of reptilian abilities. I can stick to vertical surfaces and climb them. My tongue is prehensile and about ten feet long." He was a little uncomfortable about that, his tongue was the one thing that made him feel less than human. "I have a camouflage ability allowing me to blend into the background. And I also have a healing ability that allows me to grow back limbs." He held up his right hand. "This thing grew back with some super strength and these claws." He flexed his hands, showing the claws. "I can see these abilities allowing me to infiltrate enemy areas." He smiled a little nervously. Vic started to detail the training he'd received at the Institute, but Mr. Worthington picked that moment to enter the conference room. From his demeanor he assumed that the Headmaster knew Mr. Altman and knew him well. That made Vic feel a lot less apprehensive about the meeting. Sorry I’m late, folks. I hope I haven’t missed too much. Ted, it’s good to see you again. How are you doing? "That's alright, Mr. Worthington. I was just explaining to Mr. Altman my mutant abilities." He waved his hand towards Mr. Altman. "And I was just about to tell him about the combat training I've gone through here at the Institute." |

As Vic recounted his abilities and his ideas for using them, Ted was reassured that the teen wasn't primarily thinking in terms of front-line mutant combat. That was what got the most media attention, of course, and it's what too many people thought of first when they thought about mutants... for that matter, it's what too many people thought of when they thought about SHIELD. But in both cases, it was a relatively small part of what they actually did, and focusing on infiltration made a lot of sense for someone with Victor's talents. Before he could say as much, Warren arrived, and Ted stood up to shake the his hand with a genuine smile. He had fond memories of his time as a student with the winged X-Man, and while Ted still had difficulty thinking of anyone but Scott Summers as Institute headmaster, Warren was unquestionably a good choice as acting replacement and the students were lucky to have him. "Sorry I’m late, folks." "No worries," Ted assured the man as they both sat back down, "Believe me, I know how crazy it can get around here." A shadow crossed his face briefly as he was once again reminded of his last days in the previous Institute building and how 'crazy' things had gotten, but he dismissed it. "How are you doing?" "Well! Work keeps me busy, and Billy and I are going nuts with wedding plans, but it's all good. Still having some trouble with pulling out of power dives, but I haven't left any craters behind in months," he added with a chuckle. Maneuverability had never been Ted's great strength as a flier, and in the early days of his flight training there had been a lot of good-natured ribbing back then about Ted possibly threatening Sam's record as most dangerous novice flight student, but Warren's teaching and a lot of hard work had paid off in the end. However, though he would have loved to take more time to catch up, the focus of this meeting was actually on the young man sitting across from him. "I was just about to tell him about the combat training I've gone through here at the Institute." Ted chuckled at that, as well. "Well, if Logan hasn't eviscerated you yet, that says good things about your evasive skills at least... maybe we can get in a sparring session before I go. But to be honest, I'm more interested in what might be the elephant in the room here... why SHIELD, rather than the X-Men?" It was perhaps an odd question coming from Ted, who had spent most of his time at the school dreaming of joining the X-Men, but had left Xavier's shortly after being promoted into the junior team. Then again, Ted's situation had been a bit different: the Skrull invasion, Tommy's revelation as an alien infiltrator, Maria Hill's sudden appearance in his life, it had all conspired to deflect his trajectory. His own reasons had been intensely personal, but he was interested in Anole's. |

But to be honest, I'm more interested in what might be the elephant in the room here... why SHIELD, rather than the X-Men?" Vic smiled a little at Ted's little joke about Logan, and said, "well, my evasion skills are due to Mr. Wagner's acrobatic classes. And a sparring session would be great." When asked why he was considering Shield, Vic grew uncomfortable. He glanced down at the table and then up at Mr. Worthington. Vic stared at him for a second before looking over to Ted to answer his question. "Well to be perfectly honest, my first choice is neither. I would rather pursue my interest in acting and performing, but look at me." He spread his arms out wide. "I know I'm not leading man material. The chances of me being cast in any film or play are pretty much nil." He tapped his chin for a second thinking. "Look at that Peter Dinklage guy on 'Game of Thrones.' He's probably the best actor on that show, but because of his size and looks you don't see him in much else. And he's not even a mutant." He looked back over at Mr. Worthington with an apologetic expression on his face. "And to be quite honest I feel that lately the X-Men have been only reacting to situations, and I feel we should be more proactive." He looked at Ted, no longer able to look Mr. Worthington in the face. "I feel we should take care of potential dangerous situations before they get out of hand. Frankly I think I could do that with Shield." He leaned back in his chair. "Now maybe if the X-Men had a squad that infiltrated areas and spied on the really dangerous criminals, I would definitely stay and try to get accepted to that." He smiled at that thought. That would be fun. |
