April 28, 2014 2:00 Shepherd shifted side to side, favoring one foot and then the other. He was getting the feel of his training uniform. His boots supported his frame and he knew that they would grip the ground for running and brake quickly to stop when needed. It was the same style uniform he had even since he resumed his training at the school. It wasn't the first uniform he had been given. The first several uniforms had been pierced and singed as well as lacerated and ripped. The gear they were issued was tough and durable but Shepherd gave every training session his all. Daniel imagined it was much like baseball in that he would be willing to risk personal injury to slide in to home plate in order to score a run. "So today's exercise is going to be escorting and protecting a group of civilians," Shepherd explained. The mutant tracker had been in the Danger Room many times since he had returned to the Xavier school. He had trudged through the jungle and explored sewers. He thought that maybe the only place he hadn't experienced in the holographic projection was outer space. There was still time for that, at some other time. This was the first time that Daniel had led a Danger Room training session. He was a faculty member but much of his training had been conducted as a student himself learning to control his powers and react accordingly. "Naturally, it isn't going to be as easy as it sounds. Nothing for us ever is, is it?" he added. "Danger Room, initiate program Impin' Ain't Easy." Instantly, the Danger Room sprang into action. The illusory world began to build from the ground up. Cracked pavement spread out under their feet out into the horizon and skyscrapers materialized from pixels in the air, only the buildings didn't reach all the way up. Many of them were broken and charred. Rubble and burned out cars littered the ground. He wasn't even sure how it happened but there was a scent of smoke and sulfur. Overhead, the sky was a swirling mass of black and red. To the west a jagged scar ran through the air and otherworldly monsters poured through the breach. The last things to appear were the mock civilians. They appeared clustered around Shepherd and the students. They were completely lifelike. Daniel knew that if he touched one of them, it would feel as if they were flesh and blood just like the mutants tasked with protecting them. "I know it's a bit grim having a hellish invasion but it adds to the sense of urgency, if you ask me," Shepherd added and then pointed to the east. "Our mission, should we chose to accept it, is to make it to the park and rendezvous with the escape chopper with as many of these terrified civilians intact as possible." As Shepherd spoke a childlike laughter filled the air. From the corner of his eyes he saw movement in the shadows of the rubble. He turned to look but the creature was gone. When the tracker faced east again, sitting in the middle of the street was the creature. It was the size of a small child, thin and spindly. The arms and legs were as thin as twigs and the fingers were overly long. It had a somewhat apelike face and leathery wings that folded lazily against its back. "I'd like you to meet your competition. We start of with ten citizens, let's see how many we end up with," Shepherd challenged and there was more impish laughter from the piles of rubble and shattered windows. |

Anole still wasn't too sure why he was being included in this exercise. It seemed more like something a new recruit would be doing, but Mr. Oliver had asked him to participate and that was good enough for him. Besides he'd be getting a chance to show off his new blue and grey uniform. He made some final adjustments to the gauntlet he wore on his left forearm, and then proceeded to the Danger Room. With quite a dramatic flair, the doors to the Danger Room swept open and Vic entered the room. He looked around at the others who had gathered there. Pixie, not a huge combat mutant, but could fly and spread some sort of hypno-dust around. Aaron...he could generate light. Anole hoped that included some sort of laser or hard light. Vault had super strong legs and could jump around fairly quickly. And finally, Mr. Oliver, Vic wasn't really sure why he was there. He knew he was mutant, but he wasn't really sure what sort of power he had. "So today's exercise is going to be escorting and protecting a group of civilians." Vic stretched himself out while listening to Mr. Oliver explain the exercise that they would be participating in. Hmmm...Save the Ctiizen. Well, that should be fun, he thought to himself. He went back to stretching as Mr Oliver continued speaking. "Naturally, it isn't going to be as easy as it sounds. Nothing for us ever is, is it?" he added. "Danger Room, initiate program Impin' Ain't Easy." He stopped and rolled his eyes as he heard the name of the program. Who thought the names of these programs up? Vic was pretty sure he could pick better names out of a hat. With a little twist of his head, Vic finished stretching as he popped his neck with a loud crack. He made some slow hops back and forth from foot to foot as he asked a question. "So where are we taking them, sir?" |

There were days that he felt like he practically lived in the Danger Room. How many times had he done this now? Four big incidents sprang to mind - the initial testing of his powers, an infiltration mission with Rho, a survival session with some of his fellow students, and the time Rachel had caught him after the Exodus encounter. There had been other little visits along the way, but they weren't as prominent in his memory, and frankly the last few months had been a blur of training. This was just another bump in the road for Beacon. Adjusting his uniform, he listened to Mr. Oliver talk about the goal of this session. An escort mission. It didn't sound too hard, really, not after having tangled with a T-Rex on one occasion, but he knew that this place was designed to screw with people, to make them think on their feet, to teach them to react to anything. To prepare them for running into people like Exodus in the real world. There was a small part of himself that still hadn't gotten over that. He'd been so utterly paralyzed that day, and it made him sick just thinking about it. He and Talia had managed to get away unscathed, but it didn't change the fact that there was nothing he could have done in that situation to protect himself and her. Expelling a good amount of air through his nose, he gave a quick look to the others involved in this session - a few he knew, a few he didn't, at least not personally. He knew their code names and generally what they could do, at any rate. Mr. Oliver, Shepherd, directed the Danger Room to start the session, and he immediately got that familiar tingling sensation as the room filled with the hard light that made it tick. The completed scene was new to him, a hellish looking cityscape, complete with an unnatural hole in the sky and impish looking creatures running around. "...well this looks pleasant," he muttered as Anole asked his question. Besides the obvious goal of protecting the citizens they'd been charged with, Aaron had a more personal objective. Last month, he'd had a chance encounter with one Franklin Richards, who had demonstrated the creation of a hard light projectile to him. Since controlling photons was sort of his thing, he had been working to teach himself how to create that sort of thing. It was much harder than making a sphere out of light, and he hadn't been successful to any great degree yet, but he hoped that today would change that. If he could blast just one of these imps with his powers, he'd been happy, regardless of the end result of the session itself. "...We all ready?" |

Super Jumps

Square Shoulders, squat, flatten feet, spring up. The young Russian repeated to himself as he finished fitting his uniform. It was a snug fit but it still felt alien to him, especially after being in civilian clothing for so long. It felt right however. When he joined his fellows in the Danger Room, he was surprised to see it. He'd not seen it in years. And he'd finally get to use it to better himself now. He'd Join the others, just in time for Mr. Oliver give out their marching orders for the session. As the DR walls gave way to the scene, Artyom had to adjust, it reminded him of the wild landscape that defined the last five years. Artyom's body tensed instinctively, his muscles suddenly became active and twitchy, the feeling is something he always got, the fight or flight response was one of the keys of his powers. He listened carefully however to Mr. Olivers orders. But his muscles already wanted him to go, slowly building up and preparing themselves to hurl the young man skyward. Artyom needed this, it was a chance to hone his skills more finely than to simply use them as needed and the DR was a great way to do that, by putting the Russian in situations where he'd have to learn to use them effectively. He nodded. "To the park to rendezvous with the chopper... Seems easy enough... but I don't wish to say I spoke to soon." He nodded to Aaron, and Anole as well, two people he'd never worked with before. But he'd now been a part of their team, he'd have to learn to work as one. When Aaron asked of their readiness. He nodded and answered. "As ready as I can be, friend." He smirked... This was a chance to earn a little more self confidence, too. |
