POWERS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

What the Iron Monger suit lacks in refinement it more than makes up for in raw power. Though almost twice the size and three times the power of the Iron Man armor, the Iron Monger suit is essentially just a scaled up version of the same design. The suit is much bigger than an adult male and as such the pilot fits inside the torso rather than filling the whole interior of the armor as with the Iron Man suit. With all the extra room for internal parts, power can be generated more efficiently.

While the Iron Man armor is made of a gold titanium alloy, the Iron Monger suit is composed of a proprietary composition called “omnium steel” which is almost as strong as solid titanium but less brittle, thus allowing the metal to absorb impacts and distribute the shock force out over a wider area. This comes at a cost of weight as the armor plating on the Iron Monger is very thick. As an added benefit, the omnium steel shields against EMP attacks. Because of the tremendous size and weight, compromises had to be made in performance and power management. Instead of jet boosters as in the Iron Man armor, the Iron Monger suit flies using magnetically driven turbines in the heels of the feet. The result is a much slower flight speed than Iron Man is capable of attaining, but the trade-off of velocity and maneuverability comes with the benefit of increased strength, durability, and firepower.

The Iron Monger suit is able to lift fifty tons and is armed with a 23mm Gatling gun, Stark S-category missiles, and a laser-guided warhead. Stacks of the micro missiles issue from magazines contained within either shoulder with eight in each. Across the armor’s back are two rows of eight mini mortars which can be deployed defensively against incoming aerial attacks. The rest of the armaments on the Iron Monger are virtually identical to the Iron Man armor, save that they are all bigger. The repulsor beams fire from gauntlets on the wrists rather than the palms as with Iron Man. The unibeam in the chest is several times larger than that of Iron Man, though it still drains energy reserves just as rapidly as the smaller counterpart.

Stane modified Stark’s designs with the specific intention of defeating the Iron Man armor should the need arise. To that end, the Iron Monger is custom built to withstand the offensive capabilities of Iron Man while effectively destroying the smaller exoskeleton. As the Iron Monger’s weapons systems are modular, armaments can be swapped out or upgraded according to Stane’s needs and to counter modifications made to the Iron Man armor.

Stane also employs a modified Stark Industries drone he has dubbed the Circuit Breaker. The custom built sentry is larger than standard production and carries a larger payload which includes radar and heat guided air to air missiles, air to ground missiles, bunker busters, and a full battery of defensive countermeasures involving flares and chaff. The drone is also capable of extending the sensory capabilities of the Iron Monger armor by linking with the AI on board the suit.

Because of his relatively unfettered access to Stark’s technology, as well as his own secret acquisitions, Stane has the potential to lay his hands on an impressive array of weapons and gadgets of any description. He arms himself with smaller devices to defend himself when away from the Iron Monger suit.

WEAKNESS:

Besides the fact that everything is basically scaled up for the Iron Monger suit, the other major difference is in the piloting. The suit is tremendously bulky, and Obadiah Stane lacks the practice of Tony Stark in piloting exoskeletons. Because of these factors, Stane integrated a sort of automated assistance controlled by AI housed in the head of the Iron Monger. If this system is damaged, the system must reboot for several seconds before reverting to fully manual control. During this time the suit is immobile and the pilot is essentially paralyzed.

In his haste to field the Iron Monger, Stane overlooked any kind of closed internal atmosphere or breathing apparatus, as well as temperature insulation. His focus was purely on hard offensive and defensive capabilities. As such, the Iron Monger suit has a flight ceiling of that of small aircraft. Going higher than the altitude of breathable air will cause the pilot to black out. Going beyond comfortable temperature ranges, both hot and cold, will quickly impart on the pilot as well.

PERSONALITY

Beyond the mere mechanical capabilities of his weaponry, Obadiah Stane has several extraordinary traits. Though he lacks Tony Stark’s technical genius, he is a man of great intelligence in his own right. He is a master tactician, a fact that translates into utter domination of his rivals within the business world. His gift for strategy leads him to analyze all aspects of his life and pursue the best logical outcomes. He is a master of psychological warfare, knowing exactly what buttons to push in his adversary, when to advance, and when to retreat. He is totally ruthless, stopping at nothing to achieve his goals.

As Stane is a compulsive narcissist, he has the potential to overestimate his own abilities. This can be used against him just as Sun Tzu described by “feigning weakness wear there is strength, strength where there is weakness.”

HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE

Obadiah Stane was born to blue collar parents who perpetually struggled to make ends meet. His father exacerbated their situation by continually gambling. One day after winning a large sum of money, Stane’s father boasted that his bad luck was over. To prove the point, his father played a round of Russian roulette. The chamber the cylinder stopped on was loaded, and Mr. Stane blew his own brains out right in front of young Obadiah. The boy went prematurely bald from the shock.

He was constantly teased and harassed for his baldness all through his childhood. Years later, after having developed a serious affinity for chess, Obadiah encountered a boy of superior skill slated to face him in the championship round of a local chess tournament. Rather than risk defeat, Stane tracked down the boy’s dog, slit it’s throat, and stuffed the bloody carcass in the boy’s locker. When the boy found it he was beyond distraught and Stane defeated his distracted partner easily in the chess match.

Stane attained an MBA from Stanford and went on to found his own company, Stane International, which specialized in weapons designs for military contracts. Stane developed a longstanding friendship with Howard Stark during this time. When Stane International started to fail, Stane talked Howard into acquiring the ailing company, though the price paid was far greater than the company had been worth. As part of the terms of the contract, Stane stayed on as Vice President of Operations for Stark Industries, overseeing the same projects his company had formerly been working on but with a much greater budget for research and development.

When Howard Stark and his wife died in a car crash, it was Obadiah Stane who was appointed to take control of Stark Industries. Tony was only eighteen years old at the time, but he had already graduated from MIT by then. He took the boy under his wing, teaching him the weapons business. Under Stane’s leadership, Stark Industries grew by leaps and bounds. Stane abandoned civic projects, instead focusing on military applications to the company’s technology. This proved to be the company’s cash cow. When Tony Stark turned twenty-one and was granted his inheritance, the value of Stark Industries had increased substantially.

Obadiah remained with the company after Tony took over, acting as an adviser and continuing to mentor the young man. Tony became a shrewd businessman in addition to a gifted engineer, though did not take his responsibilities as seriously as he should have. This did not dismay Stane, who much preferred to be the real power behind the throne while the billionaire playboy sullied his family name and squandered his talents.

When Tony was attacked by the Ten Rings cell and presumed dead, Obadiah took up the reins of the company once again. When Stark emerged from the desert, alive and in possession of a radically new weapon, Stane was intrigued. He set about learning all he could about the mini-reactor and the mechanical exoskeleton, eventually having his own team of scientists replicated and enhance the designs. He called his division of research and development “Section 16” and planned to market the machines as ultimate weapon. But then to his utter surprise the newly remade Tony Stark shut down the weapons division of Stark Industries.

DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009)

Stane capitalized on the chaos by selling weapons illegally to countries under sanctions such as Iran and several African nations. Every warlord in the world wanted the biggest guns he could lay his hands on and prices were at an all-time premium. He sent research teams out to collect nanite samples, though these samples were never officially entered into the Stark Industries vault logs.

POST-APOCALYPSE

Tony reappointed Obadiah Stane as CEO so as to focus on his superhero duties. Stane could not have been more thrilled to return to the helm of the ship. He expanded Sector 16 and the secret research division began to realize all sorts of interesting gadgets. Some were acquired legitimately, other’s by illicit means, and all without coming to the attention of Tony Stark. With anti-mutant sentiment at an all-time high, the human supremacist group known as the Purifiers came to power. Stane was more than happy to supply them with the specialized weapons they needed. They paid well, and he would be call in their favors when the time came.

During the Skrull occupation, Tony had apparently become enthralled. To Stane’s relief, his scientists had already developed a device that blocked the mind control. Still able to act upon his own will, he was able to move freely and accessed the newest plans for the Iron Man armor. After the invader’s defeat, Obadiah sent all the spare manpower at his disposal to go out and collect all the Skrull technology they could get their hands on. He told Tony it was to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. In reality, he was stockpiling it and having his scientists reverse engineer the weapons.

SAMPLE RP POST:

The iron giant shone with a dull metallic luster as it towered over Obadiah’s equally shiny pate. The project had been years in the making now. Providence had given him access to technology that would be out of reach to most men, but he had taken full advantage of it and now he stood before the fruit of his labors. Here was the ultimate weapon. Not only was it an improvement over Stark’s narrow designs, it was specially designed with the Iron Man armor in mind. Everything about the larger and more powerful suit had been custom built for the sole purpose of defeating Stark. Ideally the deluded do-gooder would just go crawl back into a bottle and leave the business to the real master of this game, which was Obadiah himself.

“Did you have any preference to a color scheme, sir?” a nebbish researcher asked him from behind.

“Don’t change a thing,” he said without turning. “I like the way it looks just the way it is. Give it a clear coat then pack it up into the vault.”

“The upper vault sir?”

This time, Stane did turn to reply to the man. He looked at him with condescending scorn visible in his eyes. “No you idiot. Put it in the lower vault. You think this is something I want everyone in the company to know about?”

“Yes sir. Sorry sir,” the researcher answered with downcast eyes before hurrying to go.

Stane watched the chubby man scamper away, then called after him dryly, “How’s your wife?”

The researcher stopped in his tracks. His face went pale and he looked like a scared rabbit as he turned to answer his employer. He swallowed hard and spoke.

“The machines are all that is keeping her alive. I appreciate all you did for her sir, but please…. The drug trials showed degenerative heart failure in seventy-two percent of patients. Almost all of the subjects experienced demyelination of the nerves which induces an intense burning sensation throughout the entire body that pain medication is unable to alleviate. Please, just let me take her home so she can die peacefully and be put out of her misery.”

He shook like a leaf as he stared down at the ground before Obadiah’s feet, not daring to look up. If he had, he’d have seen Stane looking down at him quizzically.

“There is hope for the drug. I know there is. I thought we were in agreement. You came here to work for me so that we could give her the experimental treatments. You knew the risks. We can’t stop now and lose all our data. Other lives are at stake. Not to mention that putting her through an unapproved procedure put us both in violation of the law. That could really hurt the company. You wouldn’t want your little girl to grow up with her mother dead and her father in prison, would you?”

Perspiration had broken out over the researcher’s body. Dark wet patches soaked his chest and armpits. He looked ill and Stane took a casual sidestep lest the man spew chunks all over his expensive three piece suit.

“Yessir. S-sorry sir,” he stammered before virtually sprinting away as fast as his stubby legs could carry him.

“Greasy little toad,” Obadiah said to himself as he watched the little man scurry away like a rat. He wouldn’t mention the Iron Monger project to anyone, Stane was sure of that. He was too fearful for his daughter’s safety, and with good reason. If he did ever say anything, Stane might just have to tell him that his wife had been infected under Stane’s own orders. For all the whimpering that little bastard did, Stane needed his expertise in a critical phase of development. He’d refused to leave teaching to come work for him. Stane had to entice him somehow. The promise of curing his poor, unfortunate wife of the mysterious illness that plagued her proved to be his breaking point in the end. If he talked now, Stane would tell him it had all been part of the plan. He’d watch the man’s mind fracture right before his very eyes, then if anyone inquired about the man’s allegations Stane would dismiss them as the ravings of a lunatic and go right on with business as usual. Then he’d go pull the plug on the woman’s life support himself.

Electricity costs money, after all.

Just two quick minor things to add.

The company goes by Stark Industries here not Enterprises.

And Tony graduated high school at 14 and graduated from MIT at 18 in 1994 the same year his parents died in the car accident.
