Flirting was so outside the scope of her experience, it might as well have been on Mars. Sarah had always been the shy, quiet geeky girl; when guys talked to her, it was usually either to ask her a question about class, or talk to her about tech and gaming. Neither of which she minded, as most of her friends seemed to be guys anyways. But flirting? That was her sister’s territory. Jessica could flirt with anything. But she was pretty sure her sister had gotten all of the flirtatious genes, and Sarah had gotten the shy genes. If Jess had been here, she’d’ve said something cute and funny and flirty in response. Sarah, of course, turned bright red and had to try not to stammer. The last time someone had pointed out that someone was flirting with her, Sarah had gotten confused, having thought the guy was just being nice. It was confusing.

“Yeah, some of the newer models are more technology than car, it seems.” He explained about having worked with cars, and she listened with a smile, even managing to curb her blushing when he waved off her awkward apology for being so sciency. Tilting her head curiously as he explained the limitations of his powers, she watched, glancing at the air conditioning unit. Trying not to smile as widely as she wanted to at his expletive, she nodded.

“Makes sense. If cars are what you know, they’re what your mind knows. It’s why I like to know how things work – the more I understand about how they are made and function, the better I can control them.” Leaning forward thoughtfully, she gave him a curious look. “’Course that just makes me wonder about things that bridge the gap. Like driving video games at an arcade. Car, or game?” She grinned, flicking the screen of the tablet until it pulled up a driving game, the little car on screen revving up in an excited fashion.

“So let’s find out! Car…Or game?” This time, her grin was even bigger, brown eyes sparkling as she pushed the tablet closer to him. Obviously he had at least some ability with other tech, otherwise she probably wouldn’t have felt him in the car so strongly. It was really interesting, that he could do vehicles so easily, yet not other things. And there was no judgment on Sarah’s face over it – powers were always different and unique, and that was what made them interesting. After a second, she glanced back at the air conditioner, before shrugging at him.

“Not to mention, if you’re going to try and expand, it’d probably be easier to work with things closer to your comfort level. Remote control cars, or video games with cars. Or even some of the technology in a car. If it can link with an iPod, can you link with it too, through the car’s connection? That sort of thing.”

All his life Alex had been one big flirt, if a guy like him - trailertrash - wanted to get with a girl he had to have quite a bit of charm. So he learned. His looks had of course helped, bottle green eyes, a smattering of freckles across his noose, dirty blonde hair and a slim, build physique was a nice perk to add to the easy charm he had. Still, a girl like Sarah here, probably couldn't be swayed into his bed by easy charm and a smoldering look. Plus, she was far too interesting to bang and ditch.

"True that." Alex answered, to her statement about new cars today being more tech than car, as he sent the air conditioning system one last menacing glare and turned back to her.

“Makes sense. If cars are what you know, they’re what your mind knows. It’s why I like to know how things work – the more I understand about how they are made and function, the better I can control them.”

"But you can control them, even without fully understanding them?" Alex asked, curious, he leaned forward on one arm, putting his head in his palm. "Like, let's say that another spaceship landed, totally foreign technology, but still tech, could you just still slip right into that?" He almost couldn't believe he had to use the word 'another' followed by 'spaceship'. This new Mutant world was definitely a strange one. When he was little he'd had a dream of becoming an astronaut and visiting foreign planets, finding new life, but he'd found when an actual spaceship landed, that he'd much rather keep his feet firmly planted on the ground.

Then she put the game in front of him, and he had actually already tested this particular scenario at home. He had a playstation two and a couple of games in the series Need For Speed, which he absolutely rocked at, but more because of practice than the actual ability to communicate with the station. Still, he humored her with a smile.

Grasping the tablet, he held it so she could see and furrowed his brows. His consciousness flowed down through his shoulders, into his arms and from his fingertips it tried to make the jump from him into the machine. It felt like trying to push a key into a keyhole it didn't fit into. He could feel himself partially inside only because the tablet was obviously so used to being mind-controlled it let him, but not connected. Numbers of code flashed before his eyes, which had glazed over, like something out of Matrix but he couldn't understand the program used to code the game.

He sat there, seemingly unmoving as his brain tried to make sense of the information being spit at it. There was some of it that said 'car', because the programmers who had made the game had fed the code full of specs for a car, but not enough of it so that he could do anything useful with it. Over fifteen minutes went by without any movement from Alex, except for his eyes flickering around rapidly.

Sarah had to stifle a giggle at the look he threw the air conditioning unit a glare, biting her lip to keep the laugh from escaping. She imagined that was the same look she’d given technology before, but it was entertaining to see it on someone else. The unit sputtered for a second with her amusement, and she quickly refocused on Alex instead of the slighted unit, tilting her head at his question. She’d never really considered that – for the most part, technology, to her, was technology. Even cars, as much of a fight as the older models tended to put up, were still technology, and she could control them. There was no language barrier. Blinking at the curious look on his face, she nodded.

“But I can understand them. I can’t get them to do as much as I can with regular technology, but it’s not a different language to me.” The spaceship question caused her to raise her eyebrows with surprise, opening her mouth for a second before snapping it shut. Because there was no way she should be telling him that she had a spaceship in the school’s hangar. No, that would not go over well. Instead, she glanced down for a second, biting her lip before looking up at him, almost bashfully, a slightly red tint in her cheeks.

“Uh. Well…I, uhm…I did, actually.” Mumbling that last bit quickly, she grimaced a bit at the memory of the last spaceships she encountered. Oh, she’d had an edge – she’d been around former Skrull technology in the Savage Land, worked with the more evolved versions of it. So Skrull technology hadn’t been truly foreign at the time. Still, it had started with such a funny accent, and it had taken her some getting used to. The ship she had still spoke with that strangeness, but it was just as understandable as anything else she worked with. Shrugging a single shoulder uncomfortably, her blush only intensified as she added to her statement.

“I…Kinda landed a few of the Skrull ships. In Central Park.” Her voice was super quiet, and she looked at him almost awkwardly at explaining. “It’s still tech. It had an…An accent, like. Took a bit of exploring, a few seconds to connect, like registering a new connection to a device. I haven’t met a piece of technology I couldn’t control yet.” She thought about that for a second, trying to find one in her memory that she couldn’t link to. There wasn’t one. Security systems, cars, phones…It was all the same to her powers. Once she pushed the tablet to him, she focused back on him, blush fading as she watched.

He was concentrating hard, but she got the feeling he was just trying because she’d suggested it. Maybe he’d tried something like that already. It was likely. After a few minutes of his trying, she reached out, placing her fingers on the top of the tablet. An unnecessary movement, but habit in this case. Her powers stretched out into the tablet, which welcomed her with all the warmth of an old friend, and she could feel the difference in Alex’s powers. She’d felt it a bit in the car, but he’d been more in charge in there. Now it felt like he was trying to force himself into a mold that wasn’t working.

Thoughtfully, she smoothed herself throughout the device without hassle, barely noticeable until she infiltrated the areas he was looking at. Curiously, she stretched further, brushing against Alex’s powers wondering if maybe she could work as a sort of translator. After all, she’d been able to mesh with his powers in the car, and she knew she could connect to the game. The little car on the screen revved up when she connected, and she opened a pathway for Alex’s powers, just a small, simple link that would try to help him make sense of what he was seeing.

Having never made it even this far with a device he had no understanding of, made this a very surreal experience to Alex. He was not even slightly aware of his outside surroundings, there was just the inside of the tablet. Feeling around, Alex could feel the tickle of the internet in the background, but he was not a cyperpath, so it was a slight, faint tickle. Like someone blowing at the back of your neck.

Shoving the feeling aside, he moved back to the open program and tried hard to ignore the other stuff on it. Just because there was one program active, didn't mean there wasn't loads and loads of other information on it that seemed to be almost pushing at him to unload on him. Like pop-ups on a pornsite.

A smooth, cool energy bleed into the information stream he was in. Having felt it earlier, he could now recognize it as Sarah. Odd, but not unpleasant, was the sensation, it didn't frighten him as it had the first time, now that he knew what was happening and he welcomed her because he was well and truly out of his element here. Feeling her energy drift through a pathway he hadn't been able to see before she passed through it, Alex was quick to follow. His brain picked up on the way she moved and copied it. The change in the tech when she came in, was noticeable, going from slightly hostile territory to more of a 'home'-feeling immediately. Or maybe that was Sarahs feelings he could sense in it.

'Thanks, was gettin' a little lost in here' he tried thinking, wondering if he could actually communicate with her consciousness in here. Then he reached out, grabbed for the tiny car with his consciousness and suddenly he just could. Revving up the engine, his energy seemed to emit a feeling of pride and joy at this newfound thing he could do. 'I did it!' and he sounded like a five year old, having just learned to ride his training-wheeled bicycle, but he didn't care.

It was a testament to just how far she’d come in training with her powers, that despite the fact that she was focusing on slipping into the systems with Mack, sliding easily into the tablet she was so used to, Sarah was still relatively aware of her surroundings. There were still sections of her mind that could process and recognize the rest of the technology surrounding them, and had she felt like looking away, she wouldn’t find her vision impaired by the concentration at all. But then, Sarah was used to focusing on multiple things at once, both in regards to her powers and senses. But right now, most of her focus was on slipping into the system in the tablet, recognizing the difficulty he was having.

The tablet welcomed her intrusion like the friend she was, although in this case her manipulation was small, subtle, barely noticeable except to Alex. Rather than actively controlling anything, Sarah simply slid through the channels, because while she could show him a path, he had to be the one to control it, if he could. The thought, translated through the system and reaching Sarah, caused her to smile.

“The more advanced the system, the more data there is to process. It can get confusing.” The brunette technopath sent back through the system at him, and when the little car responded, Sarah grinned. The childlike joy and excitement was adorable, and she withdrew from the system just barely, blinking for a moment and grinning at him. Pulling her hand back away from the tablet, although her powers stayed in the device, she rested her elbows on the table, watching him.

“Congrats,” The technopath grinned at him, glancing at the tablet, then back at Alex. “Once you find the connection, it’s really just a matter of working with it until it’s comfortable. The more you work with it, the easier it gets to recognize the same connection and access it.” On the screen, the little car spun in a circle, without Sarah needing to look at it.

When Sarah answered, her voice rung so clearly through his head it was as if she was talking straight into his ear. But by now, being with her consciousness was about as familiar as being one with a car, so he didn't startle at how clear she came through. "Makes sense" Alex answered, feeling her withdraw more from the system, until she was a barely noticeable presence.

His physical self was still stilling completely still, with his hands on the tablet, simply staring into thin air. He couldn't even feel Sarah looking at him, that was how far from his body he was. He remembered having a similar feeling back when he started possessing cars, but he had been like 16 years old back then or something and it seemed so long ago. Now he could slip around cars so easily, this seemed harder than it was by comparison. Maybe that was why he had given up on it so easy. He had become so good at possessing cars, that other tech seemed like running a marathon without any cardio training in comparison.

The only reason he heard her, when she spoke, was that she was still loosely connected to the device. With minimal difficulty, Alex pulled out of it to answer her, only to find his mouth had gone dry while he'd been in the machine. "Really?" he asked, interested. "How long did it take you to become this good?" Watching the car spin on the screen, with her barely connected with the tech - not even touching it - he could barely believe that he could be capable of that.

All around them booths were starting to close, and people were packing up their things, which made Alex glance at his watch. He had been there way longer than he intend to, but he hadn't counted on meeting such interesting company there. Mostly he had counted on being very bored. He'd have to go straight from here to pick up Regan and drive her to that thing she was going to. Having not really bothered to learn what thing she was going to, he didn't really know how important it was that she was on time but the answer was 'very' 99.9% of the time.

"I'm sorry Sarah, I've got to go, but here," he reached into his pocket, pulled out a receipt, from a coffee cart he'd visited earlier that week, and a pen, and wrote down his number carefully, then sliding it over to her. "Call me. We'll meet up, I'll show you my car? She's a real beauty."
