POWERS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Physical Enhancement. Leona’s X-gene grants her massive super human strength and durability alongside a physical change into a more hulking predatory form.

Upon Leona’s dormant X-gene activating for the first time, or anytime she deactivates her null collar, she absorbs extra-dimensional mass, nearly doubling in weight and gaining a foot in height. Her skin grows tough scales, her fingers and toes become clawed, her teeth grow and become shark-like and her eyes gain Cat-like qualities. She is able to see in the dark nearly as well as a house cat, her reaction speed is doubled as is her movement speed, in short Leona becomes a predatory hunter. Her potential agility while enhanced greater than human peak is not yet optimized by skill. Leona would like to point out that her mind is unchanged by her mutated state but her inhibitions are less due to her capabilities.

In addition to the obvious physical change, Leona’s strength and durability increase by a factor of 50. This allows her to lift ten tons off the ground and be highly resistant to physical injury. Leona is not bullet proof nor can she survive going toe to toe with the likes of the Hulk but she can safe fall from any height.

Leona is also a highly trained soldier having served for just over a decade. Of particular note, she is a highly skilled Sniper and all round gun nut.

To augment her already marvellous mutation, Leona wears custom made full body armour. It consists mostly of very thick overlapping plates of a material based on D3o impact protection with a leather skin. She also wears a headdress of scales made of the same material that give maximum movement without sacrificing protection. The thickest sections can stop the penetration from almost any man portable firearm. The armour is deliberately designed to look medieval for the psychological effect and can not be tracked back to its creator.

As for armament, Leona in her mutant form typically wields an Anzio 20mm anti-material rifle chambered for 20mm Vulcan HEIAP rounds and fitted with a suppressor. She also carries twin Mateba auto-revolvers customised to take .600 Nitro express rounds and fitted with a larger grip. Her right gun is usually loaded with hollow points for head shots while the left is loaded with armour piercing rounds for body shots.

WEAKNESS: Leona still suffers from many human weaknesses, she is vulnerable to telepathic intrusion, fire and cold, disease and aging. She also possesses a normal human rate of healing. Leona has reduced tactile sensitivity while in her mutant form due to her increased resistance to physical stimuli.

PERSONALITY

Leona is calm, direct, and honest. She can be aggressive and otherwise highly volatile when provoked, but patient as a rock when it suits her. Amongst her other positive traits, she logical, ordered and well disciplined. While ten years in service to the military has made her the woman she is today, she hasn’t changed too much from her teenage years.

There is a quiet confidence and self assurance that radiates from Leona. She is competitive only with herself and simply seeks to be the absolute best she can. There may be times when she competes with others but more often than not, it is simply to shut up some annoying pest. She will do her best of course but doesn’t care if she wins or loses. That being said, she is a natural fighter and the only way to test herself can often be directly against somebody else. Leona pushes herself hard to always be better than yesterday but she is not one to let failure or regret burden her. As long as she isn’t dead, she can always strive to be more than she was.

Many are the people who would say Leona is an amoral creature and they would be right. She is not a good person by most ethical viewpoints, but nor is she inherently bad. By and far, Leona is simply selfish and self absorbed, viewing other people as mere inconveniences. This makes her hugely antisocial, but she does not deny herself the pleasure of camaraderie and companionship. To be fair, she does get her thrills from blowing people to giblets with a massive amount of ordnance but her targets are nearly always ready to kill others themselves e.g. Taliban and drug merchants. So yes, she does have a wide violent streak, but always unleashes it at a time of her choosing. Despite being trained to kill from a distance, she has zero qualms about getting her hands dirty in melee.

Leona is till new to being a Mutant and coming to grips with which side she might be on if push comes to shove. Currently she is neither pro or anti mutant, a stance she held since before her transformation. She sees any labelling as negative to unity, she reckons that if you label yourself as someone different then you are asking to be treated as different. She did not join the US Army because she was patriotic, which she is not, but because she desired the training and combat. It goes without saying that she is no feminist of any sort. All in all, Leona judges people by their actions almost exclusively.

It may surprise a few to find out that Leona enjoys the beauty and majesty of nature and she often feels that every time she pulls the trigger, she is improving the Earth one person at a time. She does have her gentle side, but it is a shadowy creature scared of people. For her to actually warm up to someone requires a lot of time and effort on their part and they must prove themselves worthy of being in Leona’s life.

HISTORY: PRE-APOCALYPSE

Leona lost her mother the day she was born. Due to complications during childbirth, her mother lost a fatal amount of blood. The consequences of this one event have shaped Leona everyday of her life. Leona was raised almost solely by her father who pretty much brought her up as a son. He had some help from Leona’s grandparents though. Mr Bose worked as a software engineer, it was a career that gave him the freedom to work from home and odd hours. It is likely the sole reason he was able to give so much to Leona as he did.

Father and daughter were as close as it was possible to be. Leona was definitely Daddy’s little girl, despite the backyard soccer, paper plane wars and Nerf fights. Point of fact, Leona has never worn pink once. He gave her all the love he possibly could and tried his best to bring Leona up to be the best that she could be. He also saw so much of his lost wife in his daughter that he never wanted for another woman.

And so little Leona went to kindergarten, preschool, and regular school like every kid her age. She did stuff kids are supposed to do in school, a lot she did very well and because she did so well academically and in sports, she stood out. Leona didn’t want to stand out in class, she was just happy trying as hard as she could. It was because of this, she struggled to make friends, she had no idea how to deal with people who adored her, other than her father, or with people who hated her for being so much better. In her heart, she didn’t understand why the other kids didn’t max their potential.

Life for Leona took a harsh dive. When she was only eight, her father died in a car crash as he was driving to pick her up from school. Leona came crashing down hard. The already non sociable girl hid from everyone in her room. Grandparents failed and socials workers failed to bring her out. Only the calls of nature got her to leave her room for long. Slowly though, people got through to her and helped her come out of her shell. Along with her father, a part of her innocence had gone too. What came back was an even stronger competitive streak. Leona had always wanted her Dad to be proud of her, but without his feedback, she didn’t know if she was good enough.

Little Leona went to live with her father’s parents. In the meantime Leona’s father’s estate was dealt with without quietly behind the scene to minimise stress to the little girl.

School became a personal battlefield. Though she competed against other kids in sports and tests, Leona didn’t care about them. Leona only cared whether she could do better than before. The team sports and exercises were the hardest. She liked the kids who put in effort, whether they were good or not because those kids were always good at something. She hated the kids who put in no effort at all, considering them a waste of space who interfered in her own progress.

The first fight occurred when Leona was only nine; maybe half a year after her father’s passing. An eight year old boy was calling her names and she just calmly walked up and punched him square on the nose.

In spite of what the teachers and classmates said, and in spite of the way Mr Bose had brought up his little girl, there was a part of Leona that felt incredibly satisfied. It wasn’t the last fight Leona would get into, but it was the last a teacher would know about. Leona knew she was better than most, what she learnt was to keep track of the potential bad consequences of putting people in their place.

Leona was age 12 and at a school camp when she discovered the tranquillity of archery. She found a sense of harmony in the philosophy of shooting. A singular focus on one target, a proper form and technique for every shot, a dozen little steps that all came together to achieve a goal. Leona nailed the basics of archery almost immediately, and utilized the philosophy for the rest of her life.

The last teen years of Leona’s life passed mostly smoothly. She didn’t go to prom, but was near the top of her class in every area thought sheer hard work. No one was surprised that when Leona finished high school at the age of 18, she immediately signed up for the Army. She spent four years at West Point Military Academy before moving into active duty at the age of 22.

For the next three years, just prior to the Apocalypse Evernts, Leona Bose excelled in her duties throughout operations primarily in Afghanistan. She was extremely effective in the role of sniper, and combined with her very direct and singular minded focus, earned her the moniker of Cannon.

January of 2009 saw the final breath of her Grandfather. Old age had simply claimed him in his sleep. Corporal L.T.Bose took leave from duty to attend her grandfather’s funeral, alongside her grandmother. Sadly, a week later, Leona’s grandmother too passed away from a broken heart. Leona far more mature and hardly fragile anymore took care of matters personally. Most of the family possessions were given to charity, and that which Leona desired to keep, or simply could not part with were put into storage. Within a month, the family home was sold too, the cash assets added to the inheritance from her father.

DURING APOCALYPSE (April 7th through April 12th, 2009)

Corporal L.T.Bose returned to active duty in time to witness the devastation from Pestilence first hand. Her squad having been working the southern border of Afghanistan were close at hand to attend matters in Pakistan. From a safe distance of several kilometres up wind, Leona and her squad helpless watched as super human mutants dealt directly with Pestilence. It was the first time that she was made blatantly aware of the Dichotomy of power, for each that was corrupted by it, another was empowered. She had heard the stories but now saw the truth.

The following week brought out the best and the worst amongst Leona’s comrades and she was not immune either. She was glad that her grandparents had already passed from this world as the hurricanes swept their old home away. But for the first time in her life, she felt that the best she could ever possibly be might not be good enough.

When the world no longer seemed to be on the brink of collapse, Corporal L.T.Bose returned to Afghanistan to deal to those who sought to bring Armageddon to everyone else. Leona found her harmony again each time she gave a Zealot a shiny new bullet.

POST-APOCALYPSE

Leona would serve another four years in the U.S Army. During that time she would receive two more promotions to the rank of Staff Sergeant and gain several medals, mostly for merit. She was noted amongst her peers to be a little trigger happy – not unusual in itself – highly effective in her roles and somewhat distant and emotionally detached.

PURIFIERS

Though half a world away still fighting the war on terror, Leona paid attention to the events that happened in her home state of New York. She may have shown little interest but it was there. Time in the army had more than convinced Leona that gender was irrelevant. As everyone had to carry the same supplies and weapons, no one got a special advantage as none was available to be given. Time in active duty had also taught Leona that label were just as irrelevant. She had worked alongside soldiers of many nations but everyone was risking their lives for the same greater good. The extremists that her gun sights fell upon, the zealots who labelled themselves righteous and wanted to kill all that was not similar, those that cried the loudest of all label were to be exterminated. Country of origin, ethnicity, gender, all fell to the wayside in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Useless labels.

Leona found no difference between the purifiers and the Islamic extremists. And she would run out of bullets before she ran out of distaste. Leona simply hated those that hated others based on empty labels. The fear of those with power she could understand, but few were the mutants that boasted a capability on par with a land mine or rocket propelled grenade. While News reports showed only what they wanted or were allowed, Leona’s tactical training saw past any possible propaganda and saw than many were the mutants who merely wanted to live plain human lives, she saw that they mostly wanted homes and jobs and families like anyone else. What she also saw was a power wielded by enough that any war against homo superior would only end in horror for all.

An old adage often came to Leona’s mind, only start a fight you have already won. Good advice though often hard to follow give the progress made on “The War on Terror”.

SKRULLS

There was nothing that any typical Army soldier could do during an Alien invasion, let alone one that somehow forced the majority of the world into being “Friends” with the invaders. Sergeant Bose was very much busy with duty as usual for the whole week of visitation. She has yet to learn much of the truth of all that happened.

CURRENT HISTORY

At the beginning of 2013, Staff Sergeant Bose was back at West Point Military following the reduction of troops engaged directly in the Middle East. Her latest duty was now in extending her considerable capabilities to the latest batch of Soldiers. During this time Leona applied for entry into Special Forces. Circumstance denied her an answer.

Just days before her 29th Birthday, is, along with nearly everyone at West Point mutated. She was on her way to get the release of a sniper’s rifle for class demonstration when she was targeted by the man in the red visor. Her own previously dormant X-gene was suddenly and forcibly activated. The change in circumstance as well as the transformation shocked her, but her mind, calm and sharp stay focused. With her uniformed ripped apart by bulging muscles and an extra foot in stature, Staff Sergeant Bose took stock of the situation. She actively avoided contact with anyone until she had performed her own recon. Assess the situation was always the first step. It soon became clear everybody had been mutated and that chaos now reigned. Whatever change she had been subjected too, it was clear to her that she was greater than before, far more capable, far far stronger.

Without knowing the full truth, Leona wanted no part in the battles that were cropping up as untrained mutates sough to control themselves, or simply unleash their full capability without control or concern. As more outsiders showed up and tried to reinstate some measure of peace, Leona made her decision and opted out of all current affairs. She wanted no cure, no experimentation and currently no control other than her own. Leona was not the first to raid the armoury, but she was likely the quickest. The decision of what she wanted was made before she even arrived. When Staff Sergeant Bose went A.W.O.L, she took with her two sniper rifles, the largest set of body armour, paired pistols and ammunition. After all, she did prefer to work alone. Leona formally resigned from the US Army one week later by letter.

The next month, August, was hard but Leona had endured worse. By searching out drug dealers late at night, she made black market contacts. Through one and to a less than respectable doctor, she had her x-gene identified. Her homo superior status confirmed, her next step was to locate Null Technology. By the end of September, she had herself a working Null collar that allowed her to return to human form at will. It had cost her a large portion of her savings but allowed her normal access to the rest.

Leona set herself up in a new home on the outskirts of New York City proper and spent the next few months secretly extending the basement. She built a small storage room hidden behind a slab of concrete that required superhuman strength to move. A few more forays were made into the black market network. Using both force and money got her in contact with an information broker, a gunsmith of notable skill but loyal to money only, and someone similar in the custom armour department. Dodgy people all but hardly villainous.

Slowly and carefully, Leona fully exploring her Cannon side, began preying on other predators. This was not about defending the weak, but about live and let live, kill and be killed.

SAMPLE RP POST:

Tidy bar in uptown NY, good music, fine drinks, beautiful ladies and handsome men, you know the sort, classy. Leona stood out for her obvious lack of sophistication. Helmet on the bar just to her right, motorcycle leathers, old pack in her lap hiding from attention, it was amazing the bouncer had even let her in. Amazing it would have been if she hadn’t known the passcode. She had been watching the main door to her left and was surprised when someone sat to her left, surprise she didn’t show.

Leona slowly turned to face the newcomer, an average albeit fit looking man, maybe 30 years of age wearing an expensively cut suit. He was the first to speak.

“You’ve been asking questions” it was a statement, not a question itself.

“Only the sort backed by Franklin”, it was almost cliché enough to be funny Leona thought to her self as she replied.

The gentleman finally deigned to look at Leona in the face. “Is your bike one of those out front?” Leona nodded. The gentle man looked at his watched and continued, “Follow the white wagon in 90 seconds”. With that he ordered a drink and left to go sit at a table.

Leona did as she was heeded. When a white, rather graceful custom 300c wagon stopped for but a second outside the bar, Leona was on her motorbike and following. It was maybe a dozen blocks before the wagon stopped outside a private parking garage. A suit stepped from the passenger side, entered a code into an electronic lock and the garage door was raised. He stood and watched as the wagon entered the garage followed by Leona. When everybody was in, he pressed a button and entered himself followed by the closing garage door.

Finally three gentlemen exited the 300c, one in an immaculate white suit that seemed to flow rather than creases as it occupant strode towards her. The other two suits, black and big merely stood guard. Leona noticed that the 300c did not budge an inch on its suspension when the three men exited, indication it was already heavy with armour plating.

The gentleman in white introduced him self as Tailor, made a joke about name fitting profession and led Leona into the lift personally. He had the easy confidence of someone who had complete control and expected not an ounce of trouble. If the lift was to be trusted, Tailor took Leona to floor number 9, one below the penthouse. He led her past a security station where triplets, Leona noted, were watching dozen of CCTV monitors. Some cameras were clearly focused on Leona herself when she glanced at the monitors yet she hadn’t seen a single camera herself. Eventually Leona was led into a room, that judging by the fittings, was where Tailor did his designing.

“I know why you’re here, you know why you’re here, tell me, did you have anything in particular you think you would like?” Tailor’s tone clearly suggested that he knew what Leona would like more than she did.

“Full body armour, head to toe, completely bullet proof. I want sheer practicality first combining the optimum protection and flexibility. I also want it completely passive, none tech that can be broken or hacked. And non metal too if possible, I’ve seen some shit happen with metal armour. I also want it to look medieval too, I want it to say predator rather than soldier”, Leona had put a lot of thought into this, she didn’t know what exactly Tailor could provide but she was sure that he would.

Tailor chuckled, clearly unsurprised but humoured nonetheless. “How utterly Barbaric. I have no idea, Nay, I want no idea about what you do, but I think I can give you exactly what you desire. Tell me, have you heard of D3o? Of course you have, you’ve probably tested some already. I can do much better.” He pressed a button on a desk and machine came to life.

Leona didn’t recognise it, but surmised given its design and the scanning blue laser that pulsed with the start-up sequence that it was a scanner. More effective than a measuring tape Leona surmised.

Tailor confirmed it for her. “If you would be kind enough to strip of your outer clothes, I can scan you and begin drafting.”

“Well…the armour is not for me exactly” Leona apologised

“Oh, and is this other you here today? It’s quite alright to bring them out. Hard to make this work if we don’t right?” Tailor asked politely. Leona realised he was quick and very well informed.

Leona nodded. She stripped off her clothes and put them on a table that Tailor indicated with a point of a finger. Boots first, jacket, teeshirt, pants. Lastly the metallic collar that Leona wore clinked down on the table. Leona took a deep breath, bigger than her lungs as she changed. Nearly every nerve in body fired at once, pain and pleasure, hot and cold. Muscled tensed and magnified, bones grew and her skin tightened. Claws grasped at air as shark teeth sucked it in.

Within seconds, Leona regained control as her underwear struggled around larger ribcage and hips. Tailor clapped excitedly.

“Magnificent, utterly magnificent. You will do my work credit, now please, I can’t wait to begin”. Tailor beamed like a man with a mission.
