Chisappon, NYC

New York was special. For one, it was a focal point of her life for the past six years. Second, it fueled her powers, and if Noriko was already excitable, kinetic, and animated, it was doubly so in the heart of a pulsing metropolis.

Cellular Phones, iPads, traffic lights, power-lines, they shared their sparkling vitae with her, vampirism of a cleaner sort, and lended her a spark in her eye and a bounce in her step that, while common anyhow, seemed to only in this moment enhance her mood further, that and the girl walking next to her of course, with her short chopped red hair and cheek bones of plus two Noriko slaying. That was a big mood boost.

While not as large or well known as the infamous Chinatown, Chisappon was big enough to warrant a nickname, but Ashida-san got the impression that most of her people kept to the West Coast. Understandable, really. But she dug it here, plus Edo City had the best spicy beef on the planet, and that was a gift worth sharing.

"Oh shit." she realized, remembering suddenly that it was 2014 and that nothing should be taken for granted. "Do you eat meat?" She stopped her padding along the sidewalk then the expression on her face as she turned to Evelyn Zeni a hallmark of her sudden concern. "Like because I know the whole vegan thing's getting big and I never thought to even ask."

Slumps didn't really exist for Noriko anymore. After her return to the school from her tenure in The Hand, she'd hit a bump in the road, but she'd long since mounted that, learned to stop feeling sorry for herself, and moved on with life. Now she lived every day like she might not get another one, and so with Roberto busy lately with his company dealings, she had a long stint of empty boring weekends, and so she decided to put them to use.

"Soooo hey." She'd started the conversation with Briar earlier this week. "Was wondering if maybe you'd wanna hang in the city this weekend sometime? No Walruses?"

Obviously the answer'd been in the affirmative, as here they were. "Cause if meat isn't your thing I totally know a place that's got a great vegan menu."

"And its right next to a import shop that sells all kindsa junk we can check out."

It meant something, for the plant manipulator to head out to New York. It had a lot of negative connections in Evelyn's mind, from the pollution's effect on the plant life where plant life could be found, from the way something nearly always went wrong when she made the two hour trip to the city, all the way down to the root of her feelings about the city. The Apocalypse, what she had become, what she learned she could do, what she must never do again.

It would have been easy to refuse to go back. It was a two hour drive, and besides if she complained about feeling ill from the tainted plant life no one would question it. The thing was, she'd done her best to put all that behind her, and letting memories of that time keep her from enjoying one of the most exciting places she could get to with relative ease - that was running away.

She wasn't the type.

Instead she was making new memories there. Going there with friends, helping out in Mutant Town, taking class trips- going on a date maybe. New memories, happy memories, even if they were somewhat what accident prone. Sometimes her light-hearted attitude was a little forced, but mostly she was able to get lost in the moment and enjoy herself.

She hadn't even considered saying no when Noriko asked her if she wanted to go to New York with her, even though she had a ton of studying to do. Too much studying and no fun made for stress overloads and emotional breakdowns. Besides it was Nori, and as much as she liked the new friends she'd made since returning to the school, she hadn't clicked quite as well with them as her old friends. They all just seemed so damned young, even though they were only a few years younger.

It wasn't just that, though. There were other old friends that she hadn't reconnected with nearly as well. They'd clicked. She liked being with Noriko. They had fun. She enjoyed spending time with her, whether they were at home watching movies and eating chips, going all out in a training session, or hanging out in the city. Like today.

Nori was taking her through a section of the city she really hadn't been through. Mostly she stuck to Mutant Town or the tourist trap. She stopped a moment after she'd realized Noriko had stopped.

"Huh? Yeah I eat pretty much everything," she told her with a grin. And she wasn't exaggerating. She'd had subsisted on - some things she would be better off not mentioning around the mansion in case it got back to a friend of theirs who really wouldn't appreciate it. When living rough, living off of berries and roots really didn't cut it.

"Thanks though," Ev added. She probably wouldn't have even thought of that going out, unless someone was vocal about their food preferences. It was thoughtful.

"Like imported foods? And candy?" she asked after another beat. She'd seen quite a few of the candies Nori had from time to time. They looked pretty damn tasty and sometimes had unexpected flavors. Definitely worth checking out.

"MMhm." She answered, with furvor.

"Konpeito, mochi, kinako. Mmmm." She waggled her eyebrows. "You can get squids and stuff there too. They have stuff from all over, too. S'wear I buy all my goodies."

Of course she didn't note the grumpy guy who ran the place; they'd become friends of a sort, even if their mutual admiration was expressed in her calling him an old crab and him calling her a dumb youngster. There was an amicability about it nonetheless.

"I mean we could go there first, unless you're super hungry."

Noriko was never starving. She got energy from electricity, and especially in the city, that was everywhere. Of course she needed to eat food food, and she did so, but, well her mutation made he special, like all mutations did. Special in a sea of special. It was a mindwarp to think about.

She tucked her hands, glowing with crackling energy beneath the surface of her skin, behind her back, giving an exagerrated walk as the two of them continued on through the crowded little market fair. "Yeah so..."

"The other day I was thinking, with Scott run off into the wild blue and everything looking pretty calm for a change, I have no idea what to do with myself. I spent so long trying to get myself back up to do X-Men stuff and its like we're not really needed anymore. I'm not used to being on reserve. I have no idea what to do with myself."

She shrugged. "Pretty weird and lame when you don't know what to do when the world isn't ending, right?"

"Nah, I'll be fine for a while," Evvy said agreeably. She tended not to get too hungry until she started eating, and besides she was looking forward to checking out the store. She liked trying new things, and besides, she didn't get out often she might as well make the most of it. She had a feeling that after she ate, she wouldn't want to go walking around shopping for very long.

She stayed close on the crowded sidewalk when the press of humanity got to be too much. While she wasn't terrified of crowds like she was when she was younger, that didn't mean she was entirely comfortable.

"Its not so strange, I think," Evvy said, shaking her head. The world had been on the edge of falling apart for years, everything was a struggle for as long as she could remember. She wasn't used to being able to do anything about it though. She'd never really been involved in the action. But she thought she knew where Noriko was coming from. It was like she was waiting for the other shoe to drop, instead of just getting on with things.

"Everything I'm doing," she paused and corrected herself, "well, most of what I'm doing, it all revolves around an expectation of dealing with some terrible crisis." Her training, with her powers and her medical studies, it was because she was dead certain that there was more to come. "Its just - I hate that our lives are getting swallowed up in this."

It wasn't the first time she expressed this, but it might've been the first time she said so to Nori. How all the wonder of their abilities narrowed down to how it could be applied to battle, and how their lives became centered on the struggle with little room for really living.
