At this point the thought of Wolfsbane out there taking care of business hardly crossed Loosestrife's mind. There was nothing but the vivid projections of an imaginative teen's mind. What could possibly go wrong? She would be in as soon as things calmed out on the street. Simple as that. For Avery, she was accustomed to the confines of the infirmary where problems were diagnosed and treated. She knew how to act, what needed to be done and could do so with near perfection. She wasn't, however, accustomed to dealing with hormonal, frustrated, awkward teenagers. They could be so touchy at this age and she was happy to have chosen the medical career over teaching. So much drama avoided. But now she was faced with trying to calm an upset teenage mutant who seemed to have little going for himself. She had to take care in what she said as well as convince the boy that this wasn't the end for him, that he could be much more than he thought. It was a sad, pitiful thing before her and she could hardly bring a smile to her face and even when she did it was a disheartening one. How could she tell him there was no shortcut to the things he wanted and even when you try your best it still wasn't enough. "Listen…" Avery held out her hand, keeping her voice tender and understanding. "Being a hero sounds great but it's not as glamorous as it seems. It hard work, tough decisions, putting your life on the line for people who will hate and condemn you no matter how much good you do. And sometimes it doesn't matter what you do, or how hard you tried..you still fall short and people die because you just couldn't do enough. It is not an easy life." "And I know it's hard for you now. I know what being insignificant feels like, what it's like to feel like an outsider and the want to be something different…something everyone could look up to. I've been there. I mean look at me." She gave a half smile as she gestured to herself. "I used to think that I was was a freak amongst freaks until I realized I had to stop pining for the things that made other people awesome and find my own awesomeness. You have a great talent right under your nose and you don't even see it." "Sure people can sing and dance and be great athletes but those people are a dime a dozen. You however are a storyteller and pretty damn good one. Do you know how rare that is? And your gift…to bring those stories to life so vivid they feel real? Hollywood's got nothing close to that. You, sweetie, are one in a million." Avery's smile came easier now and she placed a hand confidently on her hip. Meanwhile her best friend was looking down the barrel of the long arm of the law. "Just let that sink in. You are more than what you realize." |

The boy sighed, his shoulders drooping before he fell heavily into a blue plastic-backed chair. "I was so sure this would work. I was positive that... that I would save the day and everybody would like me for the first time ever. That I wouldn't be the only nobody in this whole town anymore," his head drooped, and he ran his hands through his hair nervously. "I had friends before this. We used to come here to borrow a study room to play tabletops. Then I started making the game come to life and they got all freaked out on me and stopped coming. Stopped answering my texts. I just had to... I don't know what I was thinking." He looked up to Avery and shook his head. Him? One in a million? Impressive? "You... you're a real live forest elf and you think I'm special?' *** "You people can't just come in here all take-charge, tell law enforcement what to do. I ought to arrest you for obstruction," Officer Tomlinson, judging by the name on his pin, said, clenching his jaw tightly. "Ye could-" Rahne stepped forward, causing the officer to refocus his aim and shift his stance. She stopped dead in her tracks, and allowed her transformation to melt away, leaving the human woman in her place. "There. This better? I dinnae want a fight, officer. Ye could arrest me, sure. Or ye could let us do our job. Ye've got a very frightened young mutant in there who's just confused an' hurting, prob'ly a kid. We can help him - muh partner is helpin' him." "And then what?" "Then we find his parents, talk to 'em, offer to teach the boy at our school, an' then this whole thing becomes a distant memory yuir whole town can forget about. Besides, haven't things been bad enough?" Things remained tense for a moment, and then Officer Tomlinson lowered his gun with a sigh before looking over at her with a smirk. "Alright. But only 'cause you're surprisingly cute." Rahne's right eyebrow raised as her head tilted to the left, looking to the officer sideways. First he has her at gunpoint then he flirts with her? What the hell? "And happily married. With a baby at home." "Uh... oh. Huh." "Aye." |

Avery gave a sad smile as he fell back in a chair, trying to explain his actions and his side of the story. Listening, she in turn leaned lightly on the table near her, the scent of cucumbers encircling her. For she had always been known as sympathetic, believing there was good in everyone and a lot of time actions were spurred by pure desperation rather than an intention to harm or frighten anyone. He just wanted to be liked, looked up to and accepted by the community that had ignored him long before he had become a mutant. A plan made, that was never meant to hurt anyone, had been spoiled by their arrival. Perhaps it would have been successful, perhaps he would have become the town hero and revered by all and from there on lived a happier life. These thoughts are what made her feel horribly guilty. But on the other hand, she reminded herself, that was the best case scenario. Equal chances were (and more probable) that he would be found out as a sham, the villagers would be angered and burn him at the stake. Did they still do that? Oh yes. You better believe they did. Now what friends he did have were frightened off by his first reveal of his powers. Such a shame since they weren't particularly harmful, an open mind would have found him entertaining. Soon the rest of the town would know this was because of him and would most likely react as his "friends" had. She attempted to give his ego a little boost, pointing out the qualities in him that he couldn't see at the moment. Surrounded by negativity (and failure) he could not see what a wonder her was, how special his gifts made him and what he could do with them. He shook his head at her words,in disbelief she supposed. "You….you're a real live forest elf and you think I'm special?" He retorted and finally she smiled brighter than before, giving a short laugh. "Of course!" She replied with honest enthusiam. "Your powers, the things you can create is only limited to your imagination. How amazing is that?!" She gave a little shrug and then added. "I'm just a plant manipulator. My skin and hair is green from the high concentration of chlorophyl my body produces and my ears are shaped just so to assist with my communication with plant life. But I don't mind looking like an elf, I think it's what landed me a husband." She gave a little wink. "My name is Avery, by the way. Loosestrife is just my code name. My partner out there and I came from Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters because we were notified there was a mutant in need here. Xavier's is founded on the hope that one day mutant and human will live together peacefully. I attended the school when I became a mutant at sixteen..well, actually I was rescued. They helped me understand by powers, become confident in myself and my abilities and gave me an education. I know things might seem crummy now and you perhaps you'd rather continue your life here, but I'd like to offer the option of returning with us and attending the school instead. We could talk it all over in detail with your parents. Because you don't have to stay here and hide because of your powers. Xavier's will give you the opportunity to grow in an accepting and positive atmosphere, for as long as you need." She wasn't sure what more she should say without her coming off as some sort of sales pitch. It wasn't exactly how she expected things to go when she first stepped into the library. At least it was going well. "So…what do you think?" |

"But they're nothing. Just pictures and sound from my mind. You saw them. You and your friend fought with them. They're totally nothing," he said with a sigh. "Plant manipulation? Like you make them grow and stuff? Was I seeing that right? That's way cooler than anything I can do." But she wasn't really an elf. Of course. That was a fantasy, even though he would have loved for that to be real, to be true. Elves and orcs and dragons, everything he read about and played and loved. "So if you're not really a... you know, a wood elf, is the other one not really, she's not really a worgen- er... werewolf? I just..." He trailed off, shaking his head head. It was silly. Here he was, being given a chance, and he was obsessing over semantics. "I... I think I'd like that. I just don't... I've never left this town, you know. I don't even know what it's really like outside." *** Outside, Rahne was dedicated to giving officer A-Bit-Too-Friendly the quiet treatment as she watched the dragon, arms folded at her chest. Who did this goofball think he was, threatening her one moment and flirting with her the next? The dragon was growing quieter by the moment. Less animated. Before it was twisting and turning in the sky. Breathing spouts of harmless, heatless fire into the sky. Now it was just... hovering there, stationary. She could barely make out the words the boy was saying through the dragon, and if her eyes weren't deceiving her, it started to look a bit translucent even. "Is that thing disappearing?" Officer Tomlinson asked, scratching his head in confusion. "Aye. It is. Way t' go, Greenjeans," Rahne said with a smirk. All the hordes of monsters, all the orcs and goblins and the dragon and the knights in shining armor - and talking was what was saving the day here. |

She gave a little shrug. She never thought much of her powers. Sure she knew they were a gift, that they could provide much to the world and growing something from practically nothing was near miraculous. But Avery is hung on to her insecurities and humble, modest tendencies and never thought they were all that amazing. So when the teen laminated her abilities she just shrugged it off as it wasn't a big deal. "Everyone feels like that when they're a mutant. How much the other guy is so much cooler than you, how you kinda wish you were more like so and so. Hell, you don't have to be a mutant to feel like that, right? But theres more to your powers than you realize. You're just young yet. Your gifts will grow with time and practise and who knows, one day they very well be solid tangible things. We have a younger student who's powers are similar and he's reaching that stage. I mean, who knows what you can do in the future. But regardless to that, in the beginning we both thought it was real and it felt very real and the power of mind is a powerful thing…and seeing is believing, right? You'd be amazed at the things you could do with just illusions alone…" She let him speak a little before she continued on with encouraging him to come back to the institute with them. Avery whole heartily believed that it would do him good. He didn't have to become an X-Man or help the cause, he just needed to go there and grow. With them he could hone and strengthen his powers, be amongst other mutants and grown with confidence in a fine, strong young man. Only God knew what was in store for him, but she truly felt that they could give him the fighting chance for a brighter future. More than this town could offer him anyway. He expressed warily that he liked the idea but that the change, the leaving was a little scary and she nodded. Avery totally understood that considering she had moved to the US from a town as tiny as this. It was a culture shock and had taken a bit to adjust and shortly after she had become a mutant. It was a scary time coupled with ranging hormones and everything being new. "No no….I totally get that. Both me and my partner come from abroad. I'm from Atlantic Canada and she's from Scotland, so we know what it's like to make such a huge change. It's scary sure, but you just have to think about it as transferring to a new school, only everyone as superpowers. Trying to fit in is never easy but at least with Xavier's, you'll have peers and teachers around you who truly know what you're going through and can help you through it. My friend outside is also a teacher and I'm actually the head nurse. We have as many diverse programs as you'd find in school, theres something for everyone we like to believe. We'll help you in any way we can in whatever you need, that I can promise you." Avery stopped and held out her hands in a slow down gesture, she was getting ahead of herself as he hadn't officially said yet. "Okay, okay. How about this! You and I, and my partner Rahne will go and meet your family. We'll have a good talk about the whole idea. If it's all good, you came come back with us right away…or a later date if you wish. You can stay, have a tour of the institute, review the curriculum, check out what extracurricular activities are offered and get a feel for the school as classes will be starting up in September. And should you decide that this isn't for you, you can leave and go home at any time. Really theres no harm in checking it out." She then rose with those words and gestured for him to follow, having no idea what Rahne had been up to outside but feeling rather proud of herself for a successful talk down and possible recruitment. She pressed on a tiny switch on her image inducer that communicated with Rahne's, not realizing she was just outside the libraries doorstep. "Wolfsbane, we're coming out. Please insure residents that the situation has been resolved and the boy is coming out peacefully." "I'll be with you every step. The people might be frightened and angry out there, but I won't let them hurt you." She looked back to him, extending her hand as she stood at the front exit. "You might have to make a public apology, but hopefully that'll be the worst of it. Are you ready?" And with that, she stepped out into the light. |

As the illusions around the town began to fade, withering away into the nothingness that they actually were, Rahne couldn't help but smile. What a strange little episode this was. Illusory monsters, a dragon, a small town held hostage by it all... And then, just like that, it was all gone. Like maybe it had never happened. The only evidence of it ever having happened were some vines all about the place and now the various confused and frightened citizens slowly beginning to make their way out into the street from surrounding businesses. One at a time they came out, surveying their surroundings and clearly confused that there wasn't any evidence of carnage on a massive scale - no monster bodies, no structural damage... "It's al-" Rahne started, but a loud throat-clearing from the police officer caused her to quiet down and give him a quizzical glance. "Everything's okay, folks," he said, completely stealing her thunder. "Looks like we got ourselves some genuine superheroes looking out for us today." *** "Okay," the boy said with a sharp exhalation, glancing around the room nervously, possibly on anxious reflex more than any attempt to actually find anything. Was this how it really was going to be? Would he be allowed to just... go? Go to a mutant school, learn about mutant things, was that really what he was? It was all a bit surreal. "Okay," he repeated himself, stumbling a bit as he ambled on to catch up to Avery as she made it outside. He squinted a bit at the sunlight, raising an arm to shield his eyes. There was a bit of a murmur amongst the few people there - he was just a kid, was he really the cause of all the trouble? Just a kid? Some were angry, some were astonished, some confused. "Well, hello there, Mi-" the officer started, adjusting his belt some as Avery stepped out. "Dinnae ye get any ideas, she's married too," Rahne couldn't help but smirk a bit. It felt good to cut him off. "I uh..." the boy started and then cleared his throat, speaking up loudly enough to be heard, holding his hands together in front of him. "I just want to... I'm sorry. I know it was really... stupid, and-and irresponsible, and I'm sorry. I didn't mean to... I thought... I'm sorry." Rahne glanced over to Avery, and smiled. "Nice work savin' the day, partner." |
