After the heat of the streets, it was almost blissful to enter the cool, well air conditioned jewellry store. It was quiet inside, with long rows of sparkling glass cases that laid out the wares - mostly vintage and antique - on sleek little trays. Holding lightly on to Warren’s hand, she tugged him forward, admiring the pieces on display with her bionic eyes as she looked out for just the right thing. But, it wasn’t for her benefit. She was there simply to help. It was wonderful to just spend yet another nice, normal weekend with him. They didn’t get enough of that, what with the lives they lead and while it was a two way street, it just meant they understood (somewhat) and valued the time they did get together even more.

Inspecting the rows of trinkets, she discarded some almost instantly, namely bracelets. Although the store had many fine ones, it wasn’t quite right. Neither were earrings, unless they were to match something else. It wasn’t quite ‘birthday’ enough. With a smile, she looked over her shoulder at Warren. “Her eyes are green, aren’t they? Hmm. Emerald is a little predictable...Peridot maybe? It’s one of the birthstones for August as well, although originally it was onyx...Though I think peridot would be far more flattering.” Of course, she was not just thinking within that one box, but taking in all the various items on display in case something stood out. But one did have to bear things like colouring in mind, as it was rather important.

“Oh, now how about this?” the White Queen gave a commanding tap on the glass and the assistant quickly stepped forward to remove the tray that she had indicated, setting it down on top of the cabinet. As Betsy leaned forward, he respectfully stepped back and allowed her to lift up the pretty necklace. It was a rather simple, twisted chain with a double teardrop stone. Turning to Warren, she carefully handed it over and then picked up the next one that as well as peridot stones, had pearls worked into the piece as well.

“What do you think? Earth tones are probably going to look the nicest. Or maybe we could see some with opals?” The second question was directed more at the man behind the counter. He bowed his well groomed head and was off. Betsy knew the manager of the store personally, both through her modelling and the Hellfire Club. As such, they had the benefit of the best sort of service for the rest of their time within the place. Leaning forward, Betsy kissed Warren on the lips, a butterfly soft peck. “This is nice. Just us.”

Warren had managed to slip away from the school and the X-Men, and dodge any non-essential commitments related to his business to spend some time with Betsy. Admittedly it wasn’t time that was dedicated entirely to her - as they were picking out a birthday present for Terry - but it was time spent with just her and that was the important part for him. He always tried to pick up something nice for Terry on her birthday and at Christmas, considering how hard she work for him and was such a general god send, as well as keeping an exemplary member of the X-Men. She deserved something special. As it was he felt that he needed a little bit of extra input from his girlfriend before he bought anything. Betsy always had impeccable taste, in his opinion, and she knew Terry as well.

As they entered the cool air of the jewelry store - welcome after the heat of the New York street - Warren smiled as Betsy took instant command of the room, moving around with an expert eye. She had that kind of presence that drew everyone’s attention to her. Of course, it could also be the fact she was a purple haired woman standing next to a man with wings, but he thought New Yorkers were getting to the point where they hardly batted an eyelid at those kind of sights these day.

He nodded agreement as Betsy made an assessment of what colour to use. “Yeah, I’d say peridot would be a better choice.” The assistant hurried to lift the necklace Betsy had indicated, before she picked it up and handed it over to him. Taking it gently, Warren held the necklace up and tried to imagine it as something Terry would wear. He couldn’t completely see it. Warren leaned in to look at the next one she had picked up. “I like that one, with the pearls. I could see her wearing that one.”

Betsy turned to kiss and Warren returned the gentle kiss, before smiling at her. “Yes, it is. Just us and no emergencies.” He agreed. “I was thinking about throwing together a party for Terry. She was locked up in the sub-basement for the last one.” He lowered his voice slightly at the end of his sentence as the assistant came back, presenting a few options with opals attached. Warren leaned forward to examine them, careful to keep his wings tucked well into his body so that no one would be nicked by one of the metal feathers the image inducer he wore concealed from them. “I think I prefer the one with the pearls. What do you think?
