The morning had brought about the normal routine. Daniel rose at his normal nearly pre-dawn hour to take in a quick jog and subsequent shower. Growing up on the ranch he was accustomed to rising early and putting in long hours. The history teacher then partook of the breakfast in the cafetorium. The staff was always smiling and helpful. There was plenty of variety so that he never ate an unsatisfactory meal. Sure, nothing would ever beat his mama's home cooking but at the mansion he never went hungry. More than once, Daniel would find his mind wandering to the days of fried chicken and mashed potatoes served at the family dinner table on that old red and white checkered tablecloth.

Daniel's morning classes consisted of American History, his specialty, followed by Western Civilization. Quizzes were passed out amid groans and grumbles but a cursory glance led Dan to believe that his students had done fairly well. Lunch was followed by Daniel's open period, where he graded the quizzes and looked over a chapter on the Reconstruction for his own classes with Empire. Sometimes it felt like simultaneously going back to school and teaching the future mutant leaders of the world was going to break him in half. Daniel squeezed in a training session, Advanced Target Trajectory, with the students. He had made progress with his shrapnel powers but like many of the students he still required strenuous training.

Daniel had fallen into a routine. That had been his plan. He had hoped to stuff the guilt and anguish down and smother it in the banality of normalcy. The tracker wanted his mind occupied. He never wanted an idle moment. Daniel wanted to lose himself in everything. Only, everything was beginning to feel hollow. Finishing his degree had always been a life goal but in the current light of his situation it barely seemed worth it. There were good times however. Daniel would grab a beer with Julian or train and spend time with Dallas but there was a hole that he could simply not fill. Daniel decided it was time to try something knew.

The history teacher wrapped the tape around his wrists and fingers. The pliant leather of the boxing gloves felt good underneath his fingertips, the smell was comforting. Daniel looked over to his friend and ally, and for the next few moments his opponent, Piotr. Daniel was facing a giant. The Russian was nearly a foot taller than him. Daniel's father had told him not to be afraid of any of the other boys, especially the bullies, that were bigger than him but Piotr was his friend. Dan wasn't afraid of Piotr but he held a strong sense of respect. He had seen what the man was capable of doing in battle. Daniel knew he needed to shake things up and short of getting an irresponsible piercing this is what he chose to do.

"Thanks again for coming out like this, Pete," Daniel said. "I've been doing a lot of none powered training but I thought I would change things up a little, ya know."

Dan slipped on the protective headgear and secured it under his chin. "I'll try to take it easy on you," he joked.
