Mr. Worthington’s office, Xavier Institute

A few months ago, Sarah had had the pleasure – her view, of course – of running into Tessa Ayasli, also known as Sage, at the Stark Expo. The older woman was a technopath, similar to Network, if much stronger. She was also the Black Queen of the New York City branch of the Hellfire Club, which Sarah had been aware of at the time. Fortunately, Sarah had never been quick to judge others, and especially not after having seen the aftermath of Spiral’s attack on the Club. Hellfire may have had their own agenda most of the time, Sarah didn’t doubt that. But Tessa, for all that she was unusual for being so mechanical in her own actions, was friendly and nothing but polite. They’d gotten into quite the long discussions at the Expo, and had ended up getting coffee and lunch together…Which ended up turning into shopping and Tessa making sure that Sarah – and guest – would be welcome at the Stark Expo Charity Ball at the end of the expo.

It was nice to be around another technopath, especially one with such expansive knowledge, and Sarah had to admit – she liked Tessa. She hadn’t met that many technopaths, not really. Alex, of course, although his was a different sort. Sarah considered Madison something of a technopath, although he wasn’t truly like her in most ways of power. But Sage…Sage was like Network on power steroids. It was utterly impressive, the things the woman could do, and made no excuses about the fact that she was impressed. And the chance to work with another technopath on expanding and controlling her own powerset was simply too good to pass up.

There was nothing ‘official’ – just occasional meetings, to discuss different power usages, little hints and tricks she’d picked up. She’d made passing mention of her newest learned skill, being able to construct and deconstruct devices mentally. It was flattering to think that Tessa found her just as interesting.

Of course, the reason Sarah was knocking on the door to Warren’s office was born from one of her conversations with Tessa. While Sarah had been locked in Utopia during the Skrull attack, Tessa had been on Skrullos. They’d exchanged information about the differing experiences, and Sarah had explained that she’d salvaged one of the Skrull spaceships and had been rebuilding it. There was also quite a bit about the Nuwali she’d learned – the Nuwali being the evolved version of the Skrull. Sarah hadn’t gone into full detail about the Skrull, Nuwali, and Brood connection…But she was here to ask permission to.

“Hi, Mr. Worthington.” She smiled at the winged businessman, one of the acting headmasters of the school for Scott’s absence, entering once she was invited. Sitting in one of the chairs across from his desk, Sarah shifted a little nervously. “Sorry to bother you, but I wanted to tell you something…And ask permission for something.” Of those in the school, she could only hope he’d take her friendship with Tessa easily, knowing that he was acquainted with Betsy Braddock. “Uhm, so, a few months ago, I befriended Tessa Ayasli – I think you’ve met her? She’s, uh, part of the Hellfire Club. And I…Was hoping I could get permission to give her and maybe Lady Braddock a tour of the mansion.” Sarah paused, meeting Warren’s gaze. “Well, more specifically, of the Skrull spaceship I salvaged.”

Warren had spent a lot more time in his office than he would ideally have liked to do since Scott had gone away. There was always something demanding his attention, whether it was a student in need of a talking to or some area of the Mansion’s financial situation that needed his attention. Most of the time it was easiest to conduct any work that was related to his won business at his desk as well rather than trying to make his way into the city.

On the positive side, he had found that the windows opened enough for him to slip out occasionally and fly, and the students and staff usually knew where to find him. That was why he wasn’t particularly surprised by the knock on the door. Rising to open it, he found Sarah standing on the other side, a sight which prompted a welcoming smile as he stepped back to open the door wider, encouraging her to enter the room.

“Hi Sarah, come on in, have a seat.” Warren resumed his seat behind his desk as the young woman took a seat before launching into her reason for coming to see him. He noticed the slight nervousness she was exhibiting and gave her what he hoped was a reassuring and encouraging nod, urging her to continue on with what she had come here to talk to him about. As she began by stating she had made friends with the current Black Queen, Warren could fully appreciate that prior nervousness.

He had to work hard to keep his face as neutral as possible as she finished with the request to bring Sage and Betsy to the Mansion. His mind went immediately to the visit by Namor and the reactions of all involved. A visit from members of the Hellfire Club could possibly provoke a similar reaction, though Sage and Betsy had not been so overtly involved with the Illuminati. Due to their alliances, Warren had always been careful to ensure that his relationship with Betsy never overlapped his life at the school and yet it seemed as though events often lead them towards crossed paths.

“That is... quite an interesting request, Sarah.” Warren began, with a wry smile. “I very much doubt you would make this request this without having thought through all the options but I do just have to check; is there a particular reason you want to ask the Black Queen to look at the spaceship? Is there no one else you could find to help you?” He questioned. “Not that I’m questioning your judgement, it’s simply that former members of the Illuminati are still a sensitive subject around here. I don’t want to distress anyone.”

It hadn’t been hard to find Warren. Not only was he in the office so often, but Sarah had the added benefit of having access to the security systems. She didn’t use them to spy, but she would admit to checking to make sure he wasn’t with someone, or out of the office, before coming by. It was simply easier. Besides, it let her check the system and make sure everything was functioning properly. Entering the office and smiling at him, she could appreciate the neutral look on his face as she explained why she was there. The connotation behind Hellfire had gotten worse with the Illuminati events, especially knowing the basic idea of what happened to Amara. Of course, knowing that feelings were mixed was why she had brought this matter to him. At the question, she blinked, and shook her head.

“Oh, I don’t need her help with the ship. It has a bit of an accent, but she’s travel worthy and in relatively good shape considering her lack of exercise. The repairs are holding up well.” A small, proud smile tilted her lips momentarily at the thought of the ship, before fading as she looked at Warren, her face more serious this time. Biting her lip, she tapped a finger against her knee thoughtfully, thinking out how to explain this.

“No, the reason I’d like to show it to her is…Well, Tessa wasn’t…Uhm. She was one of the people the Skrull replaced.” There was no humor to this, and Sarah’s voice went quieter. “She’s told me a bit about her…Time on Skrullos. It wasn’t pretty. I want…I want to share with her more of the history behind the Skrull. In Utopia, we learned the history – how the Nuwali de-evolved themselves in order to escape the Brood. Why they became the Skrull. The technology reflects some of that, and I think that Tessa might like to learn about it. It won’t…Take away what happened to her. But I know she likes knowledge, like I do.” Drumming her fingers again, she winced a bit, running a hand through her hair.

“I know it’s a sensitive subject, which is why I came to you. I don’t want to upset anyone, but…This isn’t just because Tessa is helping me train.” A wry smile tilted her lips, amusement on her face. “Let’s face it, if Tessa wanted in here, she’d just walk in. I’d rather be here with her, showing her what I’d like her to see. I’d be willing to put the ship out on the grounds if you’d rather they not see the subbasement.” Which would be understandable – she had to admit to being concerned about Tessa meeting Danger.

“And Lady Braddock is someone I respect, and I think she’d like to know about the history of the Skrull and Nuwali as well. She may not be a technopath, but knowledge is something I know members of Hellfire respect.” She was more comfortable mentioning that. It was something she had in common with Hellfire – Sarah liked to learn, and knowledge was power.
