Date- October 24, 2014. Time-9:00 AM. Location: All around the school. ___________________________________________________________ Some people are afraid of change. Others are all up for it. For mutants like Pearce, who have had to live their whole life doing something they didn't like, this school was a ray of hope. The blue being stood in the court yard, only able to gaze in awe of the statue that stood in the center. After getting a good look at the monument he let his eyes glide over the place a bit more, this time taking into account the activity. There were others alright, but definitely different from your regular going out in public. Some of the students had appearances that made them stand out almost as much as Pearce, others looked rather normal. No one gave anyone else any of those weird looks, it was definitely a haven for mutants who didn't want to be judged by their appearance. The energy being looked around. Obviously he just standing here must have begun to look really stupid. That is if he was just standing around here for no reason. The young boy had his reasons for his patient lack of movement. He was waiting for someone. After signing into the school he was told to wait out here, that there would be a guide waiting for him to give him a tour. There were a lot of ways Pearce could have dissected those directions, as offensive, unnecessary, or thank the lord I love you so much I'll pray to you everyday of my life. For Pearce it was gratefulness. This was a huge place, and Pearce had no idea if he would even have time in future schedule to explore the school. Hopefully he would, this school didn't seem very tight. For now, he would stand and wait for his guide. |

Daniel sighed as he scrolled through the photos on his phone. Daniel had received pictures of his nephew's homecoming. Dan's brother Justin had sent them last weekend and they had been on the mutant's mind ever since. He couldn't help but feel heavy in his heart as he looked at them. Brandon was never going to have a homecoming. He had been making progress in his grief but there was always something somewhere to remind him. In Small Town, USA Friday night football was the highlight of the week and Homecoming was an especially important time for the teenagers. Daniel remembered how he felt as a teenager and had wanted his son to be as happy as he had been. The mutant tracker closed out the photographs and slid his phone away. He was scheduled for a tour with a new student. Pearce Alonzo was scheduled to arrive and needed to look around. Daniel volunteered because he knew how it felt to be the new kid at the mansion. He had gone through that process of learning and adapting to new surroundings twice. Even as an adult he had wished for the helping hand of getting to know the mansion again. That was almost the worst part; being a so-called grown up and having to learn everything over like a kid going to middle school for the first time. Daniel wore a blue windbreaker with the Xavier logo colored in gray on the breast. He gave it a quick zip halfway up and came around the walkway to find a mutant waiting for him. The teen looked as if he was made of blue plasma. His appearance was fascinating but there was no doubt it had brought young Pearce a laundry list of troubles. Shepherd had felt Pearce's presence as he had approached the school. His aura registered as the sound of a boiling water. Now that Dan had seen him in person his mind automatically cataloged the aura with Pearce. Daniel approached the student. "Howdy," he said with a warm smile. "I'm Daniel Oliver. I'm the history teacher. You'll probably be in my American History class. I want to be the first to welcome you to the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters." |

Pearce wasn't about to lie, he wasn't exactly the most patient of kids. Not like there were any sort of those out there anyways. A few minutes he could take, but if his brain knew that he would be sitting around for an hour, fidgeting became a necessary action. Thankfully for Pearce, it never came to that. He noticed someone who obviously must have had some sort of authority walking towards him. Quickly straightening himself to be polite, the young mutant took a quick look over the mans features. What he was wearing, uh, what did they call them? Probably just a jacket. Anyways Pearce couldn't help but notice the grey symbol on the breast. The way it sat the outlined against the rather regular looking piece of clothing reminded Pearce of some other jackets and clothing he had with symbols on them. Except for the fact that the symbol actually made the windbreaker look cool. It was also very obviously an X, maybe some kind of company uniform? Well, he's been pondering on and on about that thing, so he might as well initiate the inevitable conversation with it. The embarrassing part was that the conversation had already started. The man was already looking at him, and Pearce only managed to catch the word youngsters. Ah crap, what to say... "Nice to meet you sir, I look forward to the tour. Say is that jacket a uniform?" Pearce asked as he held out his hand, not even sure if this guy was the guide. Boy would it be awkward if he wasn't. |

Dan was almost at a loss for words when he began his conversation with Pearce. There were plenty of students around the school that had extreme physical mutations and the mutant tracker had been able to converse with them without embarrassing himself. He had never encountered a mutant who’s basic form was that of a being of pure energy (there was a song in there somewhere). Dan extended his hand in a kind gesture of greeting. It was more of a reflex than anything. He never thought to wonder if Pearce had an aversion to physical contact due to his mutation. There were plenty of students that had their issues and demons and Daniel had learned to respect that. The energy based mutant asked if the history teacher’s jacket was part of a uniform or just some regular clothing. Dan glanced down at his jacket with the insignia on the chest. He had gotten so used to the emblem on many of the clothes that he didn’t even think about it anymore. “Oh no, not at all. The dress code here is pretty basic. Some of the gym clothes and workout wear have the school’s emblem on them. We have some other hoodies and jackets too. The true uniform comes into play for your training for your mutant powers. They are reinforced and specially designed to adapt to your specific mutation. We have one student, Nicki, with extendable arms so her uniform stretches along with her body. I’m sure the big brains have something prepared for you,” Dan explained. “Let’s go this way.” Shepherd led the way through the large entryway into the foyer. “Our school grounds are pretty expansive. We’ve got a swimming pool that aquatic mutants use to train with as well as some of our pool parties. There is a forest with a trail that a lot of people use for jogging or just catching a breather. Basketball courts, tennis courts, a small baseball field. All the basic stuff you might find at any other school.” Mr. Oliver had learned not to say ‘any normal school.’ The Institute was as normal as any other school. The students were just super-powered, born with different DNA. “We’ve got extracurricular and even a school newspaper and drama club. Do you play sports or do any clubs?” Daniel asked. |

Pearce accepted Dan's gesture and shook his hand. He stepped back a bit and looked at the older mutant, keen on listening this time instead of pondering about clothing. Nonetheless though the teacher began to speak of the schools clothing, and Pearce wasted no time listening in. Apparently, assuming he listened right, the school had an entire supply of clothes for various activities. Heck they even had some clothes just for people to wear casually. It did make Pearce wonder if the windbreaker Daniel wore was a special teacher uniform or just casual clothing. The thought didn't last long though when Daniel began to speak of the true uniforms of the school. The way he spoke of them seemed free of any worry at all. Honestly Pearce thought that he wouldn't be able to have a uniform. But if they can make it able to stretch with a girls arms, and obviously some of the other more physically unique students around here, he shouldn't be any problem. Hopefully. Although his comment about the "Big brains" did strike curiosity to Pearce. How could they already have something prepared for him? This school really was on top of everything. Pearce complied with Shepard and followed him to the foyer. The mutant was quite amazed at everything Daniel spoke of. Seriously how did they even afford this? Scratch that who in this hostile world would want to donate to this place? Actually scratch that too, it made Pearce glad that there were indeed people in this world who cared for mutants like him, this school was practically built on the hopes and dreams of donators. "Do you play sports or do any clubs?" The young mutants head perked up at the question, Pearce's brain setting off an alarm that it was time for him to talk or face social awkwardness. "I went to an engineering club at my previous school. I liked to keep my schedule clean though so I left sports in P.E. But out of all the sports in that class Dodge ball was definitely my favorite." Pearce replied. |

"I don't think we have an engineering club but dodge ball is a phys ed mainstay," Mr. Oliver explained. "Only here we do things a little differently. The use of your powers is allowed and even encouraged in most cases. Applying your powers to a variety of activities lets you learn new uses and refined control. Almost like you're not in school at all... sorry. That sounded like a sales pitch." Daniel led the way along the hallway. The furnishings and woodwork was impressive. The history teacher was always amazed at the depth of detail in the craftsmanship. He remembered the first time he entered the mansion. The curly haired young man probably let his mouth hang open for a full minute. He had never thought he would live in such a sophisticated place. Dan was a young man when he came to the school to learn to control his powers and almost felt out of place with his rustic upbringing. The school had been rebuilt in the aftermath of the Purifier attack and looked better than ever. Dan was proud to call the school his home. Shepherd motioned toward the Cafetorium. "Here is where you can have most of your meals. Everything is served buffet style and I have to say that it is all pretty good. Can't say I ever had a bad meal," Daniel explained and a small smile played across his lips. He left out the part of his story that as a student he had sneaked off campus after curfew to get a bucket of fried chicken on occasion to add some variety to his diet. The students had enough crazy ideas in their heads already and Shepherd didn't need to give them any ideas or encouragement. He thought about those late night chicken runs and let himself smile. He wasn't exactly the biggest rebel but it had felt dangerous to him at the time. The Original Recipe had been good, nothing like some forbidden fast food, but nothing could ever top his mom's fried chicken with all the fixings. Then again, there was little that could top a home cooked meal. They came to the gymnasium. "Our gym is outfitted with the top of the line equipment. Treadmills, ellipticals, and all the free weights you could ask for. Some of of the equipment is even upgraded for students with enhanced strength and other mutant abilities," Dan explained. "Do any of the upgraded equipment fit your power set? Do you have enhanced strength or need a treadmill set for peak-Olympian levels?" |

Pearce nodded his head in understanding at Daniels responses. In fact he definitely liked the part about being encouraged to use his powers. He tilted his head in curiosity at Dan's comment about the school not being like a school at all. So far it had seemed pretty school like to Pearce. It's not like the basket ball court was made of gold or anything. But as the mutant followed his guide through the hallways, he could only gaze at the various furnishings. Did these things even have a point but to prove people like him who had second thoughts about this schools sophistication wrong? The young teen grew slightly eager as he set his head forward to see what Daniel would show him next. Pearce's eagerness was definitely satisfied when the pair came upon the Cafeteria. Buffet style, high quality food, honestly the only explanation possible for this would be that billionaires were donating to this place. Wait a minute could he even eat? The thought had dawned on Pearce quickly. It's not like he even had a mouth. The young boy has never thought about it. Ever since his transformation his mind was cluttered with way more important things and plans for his future. Come to speak of it did he even need to eat? How has he not even tested this out? It was hard for Pearce to hold himself back though as he noticed Daniel was leaving. Obviously he wanted to see if he could indeed eat, but it would definitely be rude to just grab a bite right now. So the energy being followed him, repeating the thought of eating over and over again as to not forget in the future. As Pearce walked into the gym he looked around, observing the various types of equipment. He paid the appropriate amount of attention to Dan when he let out his question about Pearce's powers. "Well I might as well show you." Pearce said as he walked towards some weights and a treadmill. Some might automatically assume the boy was capable of super strength or speed, but they would be in for a surprise when Pearce's humanoid form burst into a cloud and flew right into the treadmill. It's cracks, spaces, and electronic components lit up blue for a second and died down. Then it started, moving without any visible cause, a switch flipping without any finger pressing down on it. Energy then emerged from the contraption, flying towards each other and merging, forming the humanoid shape that had been Pearce. He then bent down and switched off the machine physically, and walked over to Shepard. "I've got a bit trouble with stopping what I start, but there you go. I've got a few other tricks but that's for another time." |

Daniel watched as Pearce’s body dispersed into a glowing miasma of energy. The cloud enveloped the treadmill and seeped into the cracks of the machinery and suddenly it was as if the cloud had never been there at all. With a flick of the power switch, like an invisible hand pressed the button, the treadmill whirred to life. The belt rotated along the track at great speed. The glowing energy then streamed out of the machine and collected into a rough humanoid shape. The bright blue force coalesced into a more or less solid shape and Pearce was standing before Dan once more. Young Alonzo stepped to the workout equipment and manual powered the machine down. He then explained that he hadn’t mastered turning off devices that he had brought to life. Mr. Oliver made an impressed face. It was quite a power. Technological control combined with a form of pure energy. “That’s pretty cool,” Daniel said. “You have considerable power and plenty of potential. You don’t have full control yet, like turning off the treadmill once you started, but that’s what this school is about. We want to help you get to that ultimate level of control.” Dan thought about Pearce’s power and the implications it could hold. He thought about the news footage he had seen of the Sentinel attacks in New York. Could Pearce take possession of an advanced mechanism like one of the sentinels? If he could… Shepherd imagined Pearce could have caused a lot of damage with some of that Sentinel tech. He could have saved a lot of lives. “Everyone here has their own mutant power. Mine, for example? I can track mutant signatures. Every single mutant registers as a unique signal that I can detect within twenty-five miles. My power automatically identifies any mutant I sense if I have identified them previously. I can also do this,” The mutant tracker concentrated briefly and blue shards of psionic energy formed in front of him. They grew in size until they were as large as quarters. In an instant, they lashed out in a flight path across the gym. Shepherd focused again and stopped them before they pierced into the concrete wall. With greater effort than it took to create them Daniel dissolved them from existence. He left out the explanation that he had copied the powers from his son upon his death. Any mutant that died near Daniel would imprint their power into his DNA permanently. It wasn’t a topic the history teacher was keen to talk about. “So are there any specific questions you had about the school?” Dan asked. |

Pearce quickly paid attention as Daniel resumed to talking. Mostly teacher talk about how he could improve himself and stuff. Obviously that was what the school was for. Pearce then stared in curiosity at the sudden silence he went into, obviously thinking about something. Crap, he was thinking about the Sentinel attacks. If Pearce could, he'd be gritting his teeth in disappointment of himself. The event still haunted Pearce. All of the lives lost, could he have saved some of them? He'd been too weak and let his Father control his actions. The man wasn't even a mutant! Why did he go with him? Pearce looked on as Dan demonstrated his power. Was it supposed to be polite to show a mutant your powers after asking about theirs? Pearce then looked on with curiosity as Daniel finished showing off his powers. The pair of powers he had were awfully different. It's not every day a mutant develops two powers so different from one another. There must have been more to the story. But the young mutant supposed that it'd be better to be polite and let him keep his secrets to himself, and his own secrets and regrets to himself as well. Pearce then began to think when he heard Dan's question. "Is there some sort of place specifically made to train combat skills and instincts?" Pearce asked, looking at Dan with obvious curiosity. |

Daniel was proud of how far he’d come with his shrapnel power. He was gaining much more control. The shards were still only flying in a straight line in his line of sight but he had expanded his experience with them. He was able to cause them to dissolve before they struck anything. That would be good in the case of friendly fire. It was a terrible thing to think about, fragging one of your friends in the heat of battle, but it was necessary. Daniel only had to hope that he was quick enough to stop his weapon before anyone could be hurt. Another aspect he had attained was that that he could form a group of shards into a single pane. This feat took much more concentration to align the shards into a single plane and the effort to merge them into one sheet was great. The effort did pay off, though. The single shard proved to be immensely resilient. It had held up to a blow from Colossus in his armored form, but then again Shepherd had an inkling that Piotr had been holding back to save Dan from any psychic backlash. Pearce asked if there was a special place set aside for training combat skills and instincts. Daniel couldn’t help but smirk. This kid was in for a treat. “That’s what we excel at here. All of the training is supervised but all of it is interactive. For example we have a training ground outside. There are devices set up in the hard to test your reflexes. They will shoot clay pigeons or bolos to try and trip you up. We have an obstacle course which is always fun. Then we have something called the Danger Room. It uses hard light projections and holograms mixed with all kinds of tricks to put you into a fully immersive environment. It’s pretty wild.” Daniel remembered his first Danger Room session. He had been dazzled by the sheer spectacle of it. One moment they were standing in an empty room and then the world emerged around him. His loss for words didn’t last for long as he had to begin dodging fireballs and spinning morning stars. If you had forgotten your morning coffee facing against a spiraling death trap would be a sure-fire way to put some pep in your step first thing out of bed. Daniel turned to leave the gymnasium and asked, “Do you want to see your dorm room?” |

A smirk? Oh did that give Pearce huge expectations for what he was about to hear. The young mutant would not be disappointed at what he would hear from Daniel, his brain literally exploding with the thoughts of how something like the danger room could even be possible. He then began to think once Dan asked him about his dorm. They already had a dorm picked out for him? Man these people work fast. Part of him wanted to go ask about going to the danger room, but he was also equally as curious as to where he would be sleeping. Well, might as well go and check it out. The danger room could wait. Although the thought of possibly having a roommate interested Pearce. He's always had his own room, and the scenario of a roommate could go both good and bad in Pearce's mind. Exactly what would be good, and what would be bad for Pearce was still something he was trying to decide. Might as well find out now. "Sure, lets go." The young mutant said with confidence, ready to brave it through and find out how his dorm will be like. |

Mr. Oliver led Pearce out of the brilliant lights of the gymnasium into the more subdued lighting of the hallway and general interior of the mansion. He pointed out different classrooms on the ground level and where each faculty member or instructor’s office was located. As he walked and spoke different memories ran through his mind. Daniel had only been a student, way back when, for a period of six weeks. He had few memories but they had made an impression. Daniel left the school when he learned he was to be a father. The responsibility to his growing family outweighed his attachment to the mutant race. Now, Daniel’s family was the mutant race and it was quite the extended family. They crossed a short walkway to the dorm building and the history teacher shielded his eyes against the growing daylight. He hoped it would shape up to be a beautiful day. They entered the dormitory complex through the entry way. Daniel pointed out to the area where students could send and receive their mail. There was a locker room at the bottom so they could change their clothes as necessary for gym or training without having to return to their individual dorm rooms. As Dan led the way to Pearce’s dorm he also explained that the girls’ rooms were located on the upper floors while the boys were situated on the lower levels. They reached the destination and Daniel swung the door open. “Welcome to Casa de L’Alonzo,” he said. “There are all your basic necessities. The bathroom is a few doors down and a study room nearby.” Daniel remembered his own dorm room. He had taken a few things from his home in Texas but nothing overly extravagant. He had brought along a few pictures of his family and a Third Eye Blind poster so he didn’t seem like such a bumpkin. Dan’s cowboy hat had adorned the corner of the bed rather un-ironically. He had worn it to town a few towns. Someone had even yelled across the street, “Howdy Midnight Cowboy!” to which he replied “Hey! I’m walkin’ here!” “Feel free to decorate as you like. We want you to feel at home here.” |

Pearce followed Daniel, taking note of all the things he pointed out. This was quite the organized place indeed. However Daniel was fairly quiet on this part of the tour, at least in Pearce's mind. Maybe Mr. Oliver was just thinking about what words he would use to introduce the younger mutant to his dorm. The mutant couldn't just help but admire how much thought the makers of this place put into it as he followed Daniel across the short walkway. They definitely didn't want this place to seem like a drag at all. The walkway was obviously unnecessary physically but as a design or a result of some geek who wanted the buildings inhabitants to get plenty of vitamin D(Some lessons from school you just never forget.)it was extremely nice to have nonetheless. Pearce took note of the fact that the dorms of boys and girls were separated. It was a clear cut sign that assuming he would have one, any future roommate of him would be male. Then came the big reveal, as Daniel swung the door to his dorm open, while saying something Pearce definitely felt was some sort of cheesy thing he thought of way back in the area before the walkway. He never really thought he had much of an accent, despite having two parents who were both Mexican. Obviously it was more pronounced then he thought judging from Dan's line. Unless he just noticed that his name was obviously of Hispanic origin. Gah, Pearce couldn't help but mentally face palm at himself. There he went again, overthinking things. Pearce entered his dorm, taking a look around. He then turned to Daniel, preparing to thank him. "It's a nice place, thanks for the to-OOOHHH CRA-." Pearce said as he cut himself off near the end with a frantic realization, and then cut himself off once more as he realized that he was speaking to a teacher. He forgot his backpack. "Sorry forgot my backpack, I've got to go, thanks for the tour!" Pearce said hurriedly as he squeezed himself past Dan and into the hallway. He then spread his form into a blob of energy once more and he went into the fire sprinkler on the ceiling, and from there went through the circuitry of the school to get to the front yard more quickly. Well, guess it was time for him to test out his knowledge of this schools layout. He always did hate pop quizzes. |
