Scott did not enjoy flying under someone else's power. It didn't make him all that comfortable to have Jean cart him around with her abilities, but he forgave it because he loved her. It was not from a lack of trust, it was simply that he liked to fly himself. Part of his control issues. After all, he had been thrown from a crashing airplane when he was a child. If he was behind the stick, he knew that he would have the best chance of survival. He often doubted himself, his skills, his leadership, his worthiness.

He never doubted that he was the best pilot he knew.

But this was Nick Fury's rules and so he would follow the procedure and be escorted up to the helicarrier. He wasn't going to lie though about being relieved when the quinjet landed on the deck, and he was allowed to disembark.

"Summers," Fury greeted from the door to the interior part of the helicarrier, "let's talk in my office."

Scott shrugged the back pack he wore up on his shoulders and said, "Absolutely, sir, thank you for meeting with me. I know you're a busy man."

"I am," Fury said, as they stalked through the halls. Both men were tall and long legged, Scott more so that not, but they were evenly paced, and it made them both a little relieved in that way that tall men who moved quickly felt when they did not have to worry about outracing those they were with. "But, I know you're not a man who likes to waste his own time, muchless anyone else's."

"You're right, sir," Scott said, "I'll make this quick, I promise."

They reached Fury's office and as soon as the door was closed and the men were alone, Fury frowned at the younger man, "I've been expecting a report, Summers. You've been off the radar for weeks now."

"That's hard to explain," Scott admitted, "But I've brought you something that should make up for it." He slipped the back pack off his shoulders, and produced Magneto's helmet. "Consider my search finished."

Fury took the helmet, "This is not what I asked you to find."

"You asked me to find any trace of Magneto," Scott said, "That's what I found."

"So Magneto is still out there? Still a threat?"

"No."

"You've captured him then?"

"No."

"He's dead?"

"No."

Fury slammed the helmet down on the desk, "I sent you out to find Magneto, not play twenty questions. You had a mission."

"No," Scott said, his voice even, "My mission was to find out if Magneto was being impersonated and to stop that threat. He was, and the imposter is no longer pretending to be him. My mission was a successful one. I was never going to turn Erik over to you."

Fury folded his arms over his chest, "Erik is it?"

"It is what it is, Fury," Scott said, nodding to the helmet. "That's the proof that Magneto is out of the picture and his imposter is as well. If there are threats from the Brotherhood, they're not involved."

Fury looked at the helmet and said, "And this helmet that might have come from anywhere is supposed to prove that?"

Scott folded his arms behind his back and said, "No, my telling you that they aren't is supposed to. You trusted me enough to do this grunt work for you, are you telling me now, you don't? Or was it not so much trust as it was you thinking that you held my leash? Broken desperate Cyclops so badly needing to find redemption that he won't even notice more manipulation?"

Fury was silent for a moment and then he said, "I expected you to do the right thing."

"I did, Director," Scott said, "I just wasn't certain when this first started, just exactly what that was. I know myself again... I know that this decision is the correct one. Magneto is out of sight, and it would make sense for you to put him out of mind. What I found doesn't need explaining, just know that we'll not have to deal with him for a long time, hopefully. He's where he can't hurt us, can't be hurt by us. It's over."
