Day 7 into mutation

This had been her very first time outside of the institute since she had arrived. Three days spent unconscious in the infirmary as her body changed into what she was meant to be and then three more days she remained inside trying to deal with what she had become. It didn't happen. She didn't want to deal with it and she didn't want to accept it. Her whole world had been turned upside-down and she had no one to blame for it, no way to hide from it and no escaping it. Even when her father disappeared and her mother died, not even then did she felt this helpless and broken. She had been such a good girl all her life.

Why did this have to happen to me?

It was hard enough to be a mutant these days. Avery was never a hateful person and often seen both sides to every story. Mutants weren't bad by nature, they were just people with special abilities. Yes, some did do very bad things, but then others were heroes like the ones she seen on tv, using their powers to do good. But mostly there were mutants just trying to live their lives as normally as possible. Normal...

How do you live a normal life when you're a freak like me?

She hated it. Hated herself and her stupid powers. Not flight, or super strength, pyro powers or telekinesis. Not any of the cool and useful ones. She got what they called botanic manipulation or chlorokinesis aka one of the crappiest powers out there. On top of that, her powers changed her body forever. Sixteen year old Avery looked down at her open hand, at the light minty hue her skin had changed to. What an awful color. She stuck out like a sore thumb, as if being new to the school wasn't bad enough, every eye would be drawn to her because of it. A freak amongst the outcasts. She couldn't see how to move forward with what she was now.

I'll never be accepted into Juilliard like this. A mutant like me becoming a famous violinist? Impossible. Xavier said I could enrol here and finish the rest of high school but what will I do after that? I'l never be accepted outside of here. Plus I don't know how to control my powers yet which makes me dangerous. I don't want to hurt anyone like I did the first time.

"Hey, so who's the green chick?" Asked one of the guys playing basketball interrupting Avery's thoughts. His lowered voice should have been out of earshot but she found because of her mutation she hear him as plain as day.

"Dunno. She's new. Just came like a week ago. I heard Dr. McCoy almost ran her over." His friend replied.

"Funny, she's kinda hard to miss. Don't see that color every day." The first guy commented offhandedly.

Guess I shouldn't be surprised. No guy is ever notice a girl that looks as strange as me…not the way I want them to.

She paused for a moment watching the boys play, hand going to the silver chain around her neck where a strange device hung disguised as a pendant with garnet stone. It in turn could be used to disguise herself, cloaking her with a human appearance. It was a gift to her to give her some comfort but it was also for her safety for when she was in public. She was no stranger to hearing stories of mutants being beaten and killed in the city for just their looks alone. However she was encouraged to refrain from using it on school premises because it was a safe place and they wanted her to accept herself and embrace her gifts. So far Xavier, Dr. McCoy and the staff had been so nice to her, making her feel welcome and offering a roof over her head and education beyond just schooling. It made her feel a little bad about the bitter and sad thoughts that constantly weighed on her mind.

"Hey!" A voice called out, snapping her out of her thoughts. It was one of the guys on the basket ball court, waving his arm for her to come over. "We're just about to start a game, you wanna join?"

Avery was not excited about making friends right now and with her powers so new to her, she feared certain interactions might activate them suddenly. She wasn't just bad at basketball (like she was at many sports) but she was in no mood to play, not forgetting that they saw nothing but her color.

Just turn them down nicely. If I look down they might tell the teachers later. If I overdo it they'll think that I'm overcompensating and somethings wrong too. Just make up an excuse. They don't want me to play anyway. They're just trying to be nice because I'm new.

"No…No thanks." She called back meekly, attempting a smile politely as she turned to move towards the main entrance. "I actually have to head on in soon to meet somebody. Sorry."

No need to worry Xavier and his staff when they've been going beyond and above to help me. Theres a mansion full of kids that need them and I can't have them worried over me. I don't want to be more of a burden than I already am. I'll do my best to keep out of their hair, learn how to control my powers, finish high school and leave. Maybe by then I'll figure out a way to repay them.

Evening

Avery stood in the same spot she had that day, looking up at the mansion she had grown up in. Behind her her car was parked, already packed with small boxes, awaiting a few more trips before her whole life was crammed inside and headed to her new life in the city with her husband. Even though this was not the last time she would be here, even though she knew this wasn't a goodbye of sorts, Avery still felt as if she was leaving the nest. It had been a few years later than she had promised to herself but she wouldn't have been ready at that time, she wouldn't have grown enough or been strong enough at a mere eighteen years old to be the person she needed to be. Why at that age she was just getting her footings in life and if she had left she would have missed out on so much. So many blessings had come to her because of this place.

Even after all this time, I still don't think I've repaid everything I owe.

After all, it was this place and those who she met there that had moulded her into the woman she was today. She couldn't just thank one person for it because the age old saying was so very true: It takes a village to raise a child. She stayed motionless, eyes blurring the image of the mansion before her as her thoughts went to all the faces that was thankful for.

It had begun with Hank who had saved her, showed her kindness to match his brilliance and took her under his wing, helping her to become the great nurse she was and she soaked up all she could. He would forever be a father figure to her and to this day and on, her mentor. Professor Xavier was the first person she opened up to and would play her violin for. When she came with dreams shattered he saw the potential within her and gave her a new dream. Their time together had been short but that little time he had changed her life and set her on the right path. After him, Jean would take his place as her therapist though Avery never talked to her as much but became an influence whether she knew it or not. Such a strong female role model, she was warm and caring and had even taken Avery on her very first outing to use her powers in the field, proving that she could use them for good, that she could make a difference in this world. Avery wasn't sure if she ever did thank her for that time, she sure meant to. Then there was her husband Scott who Avery had always looked up to besides the common mentality that he had a stick up his ass. There was more to the man that the younger overlooked. She saw someone who had control over his power and his emotions, someone who didn't panic, didn't get scared and who always seemed prepared. He seemed like someone she should model herself after and she thought that if she could make him even a little bit proud, then she was doing something right. While she admired him from afar, she was grateful to have come to know him better and realize there was even more to the man behind a ruby lens. He taught her aeromechanics, how to fly and to shingle a roof. He was family to her now but she never thought of him as a father figure like Hank, he was like the oldest brother who could do so much and you constantly tried to be like. Yet another person she didn't tell how she truly felt. Which lead her to think of Warren. He was always sweet to her in a chaste way and she used to wonder if he had known she had a huge crush at him back in the day. And though he'd never know it, he was the first step towards Avery admitting it was okay to fall for a guy and that she deserved a romantic relationship as much as anybody else, paving the way for when she first met Pietro.

There had been many others besides Xavier and his first class students. Like Logan who taught her self defence and had also saved her life on a few occasions. While initially gruff and prickly, she had gotten to know that the man had a soft spot in his heart and was good company when you stayed on his good side. It was a comfort to know he looked out for her. Then there came Rahne, who became her first best friend (and only girl friend), developing a tight relationship over time that happened quite naturally. She had her back in the field and surprisingly in her relationship when everyone doubted Pietro, supporting her through the rough patches. Loyal Rahne was always there providing the friendship she needed. Lastly Kyle came along and despite the rocky start, their friendship was almost instantaneous. Like Rahne he supported her and had her back, but often butted heads with her along the way. He always told her hurtful truths and didn't coddle her from things that she needed to hear. He also became the one who let her feel angry when she should be, or at least became the only one she felt comfortable around letting her anger out. The poor guy often got the brunt of her scorn and punches and still stuck around. To be fair, he usually deserved it but with their back and forth it only seemed to make their relationship stronger.

Avery face tugged into a little smirk at that. Hefting up the slowly sliding box back up into her arms, she half wondered what this was what it felt like to be an adult.

"Thank you. For everything."
