Date: September 18th Time: 9:05 AM The trip was over, rest had been had, though answers had not really been found, well there had been answers but not the ones that they had wanted. For the time being Magneto continued to live beyond the grasp of those whom had spent almost a year searching for him. Joseph was unsure whether he should be happy, or worried, the future that could come to pass as a result of Magneto being weaponised was ghastly, it was a thought that had clung to Joseph during their return, if Magneto could be weaponised then so too could Joseph. Granted Joseph was a long way from being on the same power level as Magneto was, but he still had the potential, it would just take time and training for him to reach that same place. To live a life in the same way that Magneto had and to hopefully not make the same mistakes that his donor had made that led him to such a dark path. Despite that fear though Joseph had softened to his donors plight somewhat on their journey, despite the evil that he had done, there had been good to come from him; Pietro, Wanda, Lorna and the rest of the family, and his intentions had been noble at the start even if they had become corrupted over the years. So far Joseph had been safe from corruption that had seeped into Magneto and he was fairly certain of the path that he wanted to take through life, he did not want to rule, though the ego for that to develop in time was there, instead he wanted to protect like Scott and the X-Men. Their time away had seen the young clone grow closer to the leader of the X-Men, neither of the males were overly emotive individuals but Joseph had come to respect the leader the more time they had been around each other, and today Joseph was on his way to seeing Scott. Now that he was back at the school it was time for Joseph to start his lessons in earnest. Joseph was unsure if he was ready to start his life as a highschooler - was he ready for such a task? He was in truth barely out of the terrible toddler stage, even if mentally he was ready for the challenge. In fact Joseph was fairly confident in the fact that he was likely further ahead in academics than most of the cohort that he would be studying with, even if he was behind them in terms of his power development, though that had changed somewhat while away. The ship that they had spent months upon had given Joseph a chance to test and practice and the situations that Sinister had thrown at them allowed him to grow in confidence with his powers. Still there was something daunting about starting school properly finally, and he wasn't quite sure that he was ready to face it - or the rabble that came as standard during the life of the student. Approaching the door of Scott's office, the young clone with school bag slung over one shoulder knocked on the door before entering once he was bidded to. "Morning Mr Summers," Joseph still spoke somewhat respectfully, informal wasn't something that he was entirely comfortable with and probably wouldn't be until he developed some friendships with people of his own age. |

Punches from the Punch Dimension

"Good morning, Joseph," Scott said, as the boy entered, extending a hand and offering him a seat, "Ready to get started, are you?" He and the young clone had talked about this at length on the StarJammer, about what to do after this was over, after they had decided what to do about Magneto. Joseph's whole life, as short as it had been up to now, had been dictated by the man he had been cloned from, and that was so very unfair to him. Scott knew what it was like to have everything you were come from another, especially after what they had learned from Sinister. Joseph had to find his own way, and for all the lost and pain that came with being a student here at this school, there was so much more goodness and direction that came from it. "Before you head out to the terrors of high school, I thought we should talk a little," Scott said, "This is a new thing, and believe it or not, I know what it's like. When I was a kid, I was in a plane crash. I don't know if we've discussed this or not, but it left me in a coma with brain damage. I think you saw part of that when Sinister decided to show us all each other's tragedies." Scott tapped on his temple, careful as always not to dislodge his glasses, "I woke up over a year older, with brain damage. I couldn't read or write, kept mixing up left and right, got my words wrong, and basically went from an 4th grade A student, to a remedial class mess. It was not, as you might guess, an easy transition, and if you have learned anything about me, you know that I do have a problem when I come up lacking. When I did go back to school, I was behind the rest of my class, and felt... stupid. I wasn't stupid, though. I just needed a little help catching back up." The man brought his hand down, rapping it in a fist on the wood of his desk to emphasize his concern and encouragement, "You're a smart young man, Joseph, and what we saw out there changes nothing about who you are, because you have the choice to be whoever you want to be. You're clever, you're brave, and you're with people who will help you and care for you. Whoever your donor was, whatever he became, he was that thing because he let himself become that. You're more than that, Joseph. I've seen it, and I want you to know, I'm here to help you become whoever it is you want to be." |

Joseph shook the hand as it was offered and took the seat, was he ready for what was to lay before him? He was more than ready for the academic challenges that lay before him, in truth he was actually looking forward to being mentally tested and learning more about the world that he had been created for. Was he ready for the social aspect of it though? Joseph didn't really have friends, not in the way that other teenagers of his age had friends, in truth he didn't even like teenagers and those people he dealt with more times than not were family. There was some things that made the notion of going to high school here better than other places though - for one thing he already knew most of the staff, the downside was that Jac was no longer here which would have made it all the better. Though there was something to be said about not going to school in the same place as your sort of mother figure worked at. As Scott helped Joseph in the best way that he knew how to and told the story of how Scott too had sort of been in a similar situation to Joseph had done - though Joseph wasn't entirely sure whether he counted as advanced for his age (if you counted his biological age) or whether you counted the fact that he was very much a teenager due to the way that he had been created and aged up within an artificial environment by Sinister, it would appear that it was something else that Scott and Joseph had in common. Both were destined to have their lives interfered with by the geneticist for time immemorial. Joseph could fully empathise with how Scott reacted to being forced to go backwards, he knew exactly how he would react had Joseph been in such a situation as well. "It's not so much the learning that I am worried about," Joseph indeed liked to learn, and was curious about most things in the world around him, as Scott saw when they were at Horizon Labs and Joseph was trying to understand how his own powers could be adjusted so that he was able to trace Magneto though that had proven to be futile after all, or at least for the time being. The problem though was pretty apparent to anyone that knew Joseph, he didn't really put himself out there when it came to socialising and making friendships, "It's them that worries me." And by them he meant everyone from the youngest student right through to those who were close enough to joining the legacy squad, the idea of forming friendships was still pretty daunting to the clone that had known cruelty before he had known kindness. "I want to be here though, I know that much." Joseph reaffirmed, he knew exactly where he wanted to be in several years - which was on the legacy squad or already part of the X-Men, he had high expectations for himself and he fully intended to unseat Theresa Cassidy as one of the youngest X-Men on the team. "I just don't know how to do it, they are so different to me." Perhaps Scott could shed some light on how to get on with those who seemed to be a world apart from where he was. |

Joseph got to the heart of his problem and concerns, and Scott nodded. "Believe it or not, I understand that as well. When I left the hospital for the State Home, and I was sent back to school, I felt like... none of these other kids knew what I had been through, none of them understood what it was like to be me. None of them had anything in common with me. They got to go homes to lives that I would never know anymore, parents who loved them, homes where they didn't have to worry about getting their stuff stolen, or getting beat up every day. After I ran away from the home, and hooked up with Jack, I tried to go to school because I thought it was normal, I thought if I could pretend, maybe I could relate to the other kids. But it was hard to give a damn about homecoming, when you spend your nights using freak powers out of your eyeballs to blow holes in bank vaults." Scott looked around his office and he said, "Eventually, I ended up here, with the Professor, and for a while, it was just us. I liked that a lot. I had just about convinced myself that I didn't need anyone else here. Maybe it was ok to be alone. Then, he brought in Warren, and I hated him from the first moment I heard he was coming, long before I met him. He was rich, probably spoiled, had his parents, had pretty powers that didn't hurt and kill people. How would someone like that ever be friends with someone like me, much less a team like the Professor wanted?" That first meeting, him and Warren, two angry broken teenage boys sizing each other up like beaten dogs. He had no idea what Warren had seen when he looked at him, never asked, in all these years, because that's not who they were, not the friendship they had. Sixteen year old Scott'd had no idea that the little rich boy would someday be his closest friend. But, this school had had other ideas, and Scott would be forever grateful. "I found out though that Warren, he was just as broken as I was, just as lost, as scared," Scott said, "And when Jean came along, and then Jon, Hank... every one of us needed help, everyone of us needed each other. That hasn't changed in all this time, Joseph. The kids in the school now aren't any different from the ones in my day. Everyone out there is going through the same thing as you, different backgrounds, different situations and fears maybe, but all they want is to live their lives, to be safe, to be happy, and to be more than the world outside these gates tells them they can be. These kids don't care if you're a clone, a mutant, a hippopotamus in a tutu. They just want to be kids. That's what we're here to let you guys be." |
