Time: Evening, a few hours after Idie is rescued
Date: Monday, 13 April 2015

The SHIELD people were apparently not going to kill her. Idie didn't think that was very clever of them, but she was too overwrought to argue. In spite of everything, she was grateful to be alive. And she even allowed herself a small spark of hope.

Sitting in the back of the SHIELD car from the airport, Idie lightly touched the device that took away her powers with a fingertip. She could do that now, her hands weren't on fire or covered in ice. Her eyes either, though she hadn't realized at first they'd changed. They said they couldn't fix her permanently, that the machine was only temporary, but still, they were inventing new things every day, right? They might figure it out. They were smart, these SHIELD people. She'd pray for them. With the support of the Lord, they could do it!

That was the main thing she'd been thinking on the flight. They'd done other things too, like given her a jacket so large it was more like a dress. Which was good, since her own clothes were kind of burned, and once her powers were gone she was kind of cold. They'd given her food too, and told her they were taking her to a school in New York.

It had scared her at first, going to New York. It's where they monsters all lived, where all the bad things happened. But she was a monster too now, so where else would she go? As the heartening effects of food, warmth, and shelter slowly took hold, Idie's curiosity began to outweigh her dread. There were other monster kids? What would they be like? Was it really a school? It couldn't be, it was really a prison, right? She'd killed people, they couldn't just let her walk around, but maybe it was a prison where you also went to school?

The car pulled up to a house that really did not look like a prison, and there were two people waiting who definitely did not look like guards. Wrapping her oversized coat around her, standing there in her soggy, burned shoes, Idie silently looked at them with large eyes.

There was a bit of an odd arrangement between Xavier's Institute and SHIELD. There wasn't really animosity per se, but it could hardly be classified as a trusting relationship. In fact, previous SHIELD management had been at odds with the school, or rather the X-Men operation in particular. But now, there was almost an unspoken respectful agreement. Probably due in part to the fact that several of the Institute's graduates went on to find work as SHIELD Agents, but SHIELD kept back from X-Men operations, and at times brought in rescues or arrests to be students. Today was one such case.

Considering the age of this rescue, though, Rahne was unsure as to why she had been asked to meet her at the drop-off. She was a bit old for her educational expertise. So there must have been another reason she in particular had been requested. But either way, her help was desired, and she was never really one to turn down such a request and not feel guilty about doing so.

She watched the young woman step off of the SHIELD transport, looking more or less exactly as the brief report she had been given described her as. She not only looked small, but she exuded smallness - shrinking in on herself with obvious discomfort and fear. Even in her human form as she was, Rahne could smell the uneasiness that lingered around the girl.

"Hullo! Idie, aye? Hope I'm pronouncin' that right, an' if I'm not, feel free t' blame the accent an' nae muh tendency t' mangle names," open with a bit of humor, a bit of lightheartedness to hopefully ease the girl in a bit.

"I'm Rahne - an' no, it's nae spelled th' same as water fallin' from the sky. Welcome t' Xavier's," she said with a small smile, tilting her head to the left as she went about committing the girl's scent to memory. Elementals always had a fragment of their powers lingering in their scents, and Idie's was... different. There was the slightly ashen scent of firestarters, but also the crystalline chill that Bobby Drake had.

"Feel free to ask any questions ye'd like to, an' then we'll get t' startin' this tour up proper. Sound good?" Idie likely would have noticed the crucifix that hung around Rahne's neck, shaped organically from bright, polished obsidian. It was an accessory Rahne kept on her at all times, or rather more often than not.

"And let's get ye a fresh pair o' shoes, aye? We've got a whole wardrobe depot in our basement that'll do ye nicely."

It was brisk and sunny as Theodore stood out in front of the Xavier’s Mansion waiting for its newest student. He wore a pair of slacks and a button-up, because he’d been a teacher for long enough that he felt at least somewhat obligated to appear professional and adult. His shirt was baby blue, and vibrantly displayed an almost sickeningly colorful floral because even at his most adult, Theo was a firework display of a person (i.e. loud, bright, and impossible to ignore). He nervously shifted his weight from one foot to the other as they waited.

This was his first new student. Granted, he’d already helped a few new faces find their way around the mansion and such, but he’d never been a part of the welcome committee. It was his first time as a face for the school.

“That poor girl…” Theo muttered, not quite sure what else to say as the pair of them waited. Some mutants developed gradually, their abilities glimmering a handful of times and slowly becoming more prominent… and some mutants developed all at once. While the latter made for one hell of an entrance, the majority of the time the consequences were somewhat disastrous, if not just for the mutant in question, then for the people around them. This girl had essentially blown up her home and family with her abilities… what must she think of them? Especially coming from a country where mutancy was punishable by law.

Looking over at Rhane, it was clear that this was just another day at the rodeo for her. She took in troubled mutant youths like it was as easy as breathing. Theo tried to match her posture, to mimic the way she seemed to radiate stability… control. Was that the mother in her? The wolf? Probably both, he decided.

The SHIELD transport made it to the mansion, and Idie stepped onto the cobbled road in front of the mansion, obviously somewhat unsure of her surroundings. Without missing a beat, Rhane made her way to the girl, giving no time for an awkward quiet to settle between them. He watched her tilt her head to catch the girl’s scent, a habit that he’d even seen the woman’s son imitate. Like mother like son. Theo stepped forward after Rhane, digging his hands into his pockets. He nodded respectfully to the SHIELD agent responsible for the girl’s safe arrival before following Rhane’s lead and introducing himself.

“Hello Idie,” he said as softly and comfortingly as he could manage, “I’m Theodore. You can call me Theo.” He produced, from his pocket, a bar of rich chocolate, which he promptly offered to the girl with an open palm. “Chocolate?” He knew, truly, that sugar was hardly any consolation for what she’d lost, but chances were that after what she’d been through, the girl could use the comfort of something sweet.

They were being very nice. Maybe too nice. What reason did they have to be nice to her? She was a killer surely they knew that? Or maybe they were killers too? Idie's eyes fell on the jewelry around Miss Rahne's neck, momentarily startled by the tortured man shown there. Then she remembered crucifixes were a Catholic custom; she'd seen them about town. Miss Rahne sounded Irish, and there were supposed to be a lot of Catholics there. Maybe that's all it was.

Maybe.

They'd given their Christian names, Idie thought, not their surnames. She wasn't certain of proper forms of address of elders for that situation, and had very little idea what the customs were in New York.

"Yes, Auntie. Yes, Uncle," Idie answered, avoiding the whole issue by using generic honorifics.

And then, the chocolate.

Idie didn't trust the gift, or at least felt like she shouldn't. But she also didn't want to offend Mr. Theo by refusing it. Staring at it for a moment—you know, it looked really good—Idie finally reached out to take it. Partway there, she jerked her hand back, remembering the blasts and suddenly afraid she'd hurt him. She balled her hands into fists and pulled them close, so they weren't aimed at anybody.

But... but it was ok, wasn't it? She had the machine. Idie felt it against her skin, and her hands looked normal. Maybe if she kept her palms facing herself and her fists closed, she could knock it out of his hand without anything ever pointing at him just in case it all fell apart again and...

Oh for heaven's sake, this was taking forever.

Moving as quickly as she could, she finally just snatched the chocolate bar out of his hand and clutched it to her chest.

"Sorry, thank you," she said, speaking as properly as she could with her Nigerian lilt. "My hands are very dangerous."

Rahne glanced over to Theo. He seemed uncomfortable, awkward, nervous. He was still pretty new at all of this, still learning the ropes, but jumping in with both feet sometimes was the best way to learn, best way to acclimate and grow more comfortable. She'd been at this for several years by now, so this was no big thing for her. Funny how that worked out sometimes. This was big for Theo, huge for Idie, yet just another day on the job for Rahne.

"Auntie? Heh, no, no," Rahne shook her head slowly. "I've been accidentally called 'mum' by much students, but never auntie. Feel free t' use muh name, or I suppose 'missus Russell' if ye can nae do that."

She watched as Idie struggled to take the offered candy, reading the fear and apprehension radiating from the girl. Like many new mutants, Idie seemed not afraid for herself, but afraid for what she might do to someone else as she minimized contact, minimized interaction. Rahne remembered those days well herself, but at least as a child she had never killed anyone. Nobody had died as a result of her own initial manifestation. She herself had almost been killed, but she hadn't caused harm to another yet. Not then.

"Well, ye're certainly nae alone in that regard," Rahne said. "Much of us have the capacity f'r danger, the potential to hurt people. That's why we learn, that's why we practice. That's why we teach. An' that's what we'll do. If'n ye're willing, ye will learn, ye will get a hold on yuir powers, and ye will be able to lead a healthy, positive life without fear or worry over yuir own abilities."

Rahne smiled, reaching out with her right hand open, offering it for Idie to take if she chose.
"So what do ye say we show ye 'round the place, would ye like that?"

Theo watched as Idie struggled to even reach out for the chocolate, fear glossing over her eyes as she managed the courage to snap her hand out and snatch the confection from his hands. He understood the feeling. All of a sudden, she was capable of what seemed like awful, destructive things, and her life had been turned on its head as a result of those abilities… she didn’t understand her abilities, and to be fair neither did they. The unknown breeds fear. In what he hoped was a reassuring gesture, he reached a hand out and patted the girl on the shoulder.

“Don’t worry, I can be dangerous around chocolate too,” he said with a soft smile. Clearly, she’d meant the destruction that her mutant abilities were capable of, but Theo had found over the years that there were two main extremes that new mutants went to in response to their powers. On the one hand, there were those so terrified of what they’d become that they spent every ounce of their energy trying to hide their mutant genetics, pretending they were anything else. On the other, there were those mutants that lost themselves in their abilities- so overwhelmed by their new sense of power that they lost the person they were before them. Unsurprisingly, the most well-adjusted mutants tended to be somewhere in between: embracing their abilities, retaining who they are, and incorporating their powers into their identity without simply wiping it out. Rhane said her piece about learning to control mutant powers, and Theo nodded dutifully.

“You’re with friends here, Idie. We’re like you.” Rhane reached out with her hand toward the girl, and Theo watched nervously. Considering the apprehension with which the girl had even touched a bar of chocolate, the likelihood of her grasping another person’s hand seemed… minimal.

They were trying to reassure her, Mrs. Russell and Uncle Theo, and Idie was torn between taking this all at face value and waiting for the catch. There would have to be a catch, right? She had to be punished, she'd killed people. That was how it worked.

Idie froze a little when he touched her shoulder, but he didn't hurt her, and no one died, so that turned out ok. Though were her shoulders dangerous? It seemed like mostly her hands and eyes. Maybe her shoulders were ok? She was curious, in spite of herself, but finding out meant taking off the mechanical thing around her neck that was keeping her from destroying everyone, and there was no way she was doing that. Assuming she even could. Could she? How did you do that? Was there a button? A buckle? A clasp? She had no idea. But it was staying on if she had anything to say about it, so she supposed it didn't matter.

And then Mrs. Russell reached out a hand. Like her parents did. And she'd reached back and killed them.

After a moment Idie realized she was staring at the hand, still clutching the chocolate to her chest like some kind of talisman. They were like her, Uncle Theo said. Monsters. Killers. So it didn't matter if they burned. She could take Mrs. Russell's hand, and maybe it would be nice, and maybe they would end in flames, and either way it would be the same. No one would cry over a few less monsters in the world.

Except... Except that was really creepy and messed up.

"Yes, could you show me where I can go, please?" Idie said, keeping her hands firmly to herself and hoping accepting one of Mrs. Russell's offers made up for refusing the other one. "They said I would be living here now. The SHIELD people."

This wasn't going to be an easy case, that was for sure. This girl was damaged by her experiences. Severely damaged, that was for sure. It remained to be seen, though, if that was merely damage or breakage. Damage could be repaired. Patched up and given a new coat of paint and made whole again. Broken was an entirely different story. Broken needed to be rebuilt from the ground up, the pieces sorted and arranged and carefully put back together. Rebuilding a broken person was a difficult task and sometimes an impossible one. Rahne hoped, prayed even, that that was not the case with Idie here.

"Absolutely," Rahne said with a nod of her head, turning around and making her way back towards the main building of the mansion. If she had been offended by the refusal of her hand, she certainly wasn't showing it.

"Our dormitories are divided by the sexes - boys on one side, girls on the other. We do have a curfew, one we like to stick to, so it's best t' nae go sneakin' out late at night. Cannae tell ye how many times I've caught scent of a student what thought he or she was cleverer than us an' thought we'd nae notice."

The doors opened wide, allowing them access to the inside of the mansion. It was big, it was opulent, and yet oh so used. Students of all kinds, some visibly mutated as well, walked the halls - some of them floated the halls, one scampered the walls of the halls.
"Get down from there, please," Rahne said, folding her arms at her chest. "We dinnae want handprints on the walls."

"Sorry," the young man said as he hopped down from the wall, looking none too actually sorry as he casually strolled along.

"Dorms are up these stairs here," she said, gesturing to the main staircase in the foyer. "I believe we may be able t' set ye up in yuir own room if ye need it, but I recommend taking a room with a roommate. Give ye someone yuir own age to befriend. We can even try to link ye up with someone with common interests. So, what're ye interested in? Ye like music? Theo here teaches our music class if ye'd like that."

As he’s expected, the girl kept her hands clenched and pressed against her chest. It was the sort of stance and behavior that you saw a lot in new students here- they kept themselves scrunched up as tight as they could, trying with all their might to take up less space and not touch anything. Sometimes it was nerves, and sometimes it was trauma, and sometimes it was something else entirely, but in the end, not many people stayed like this long. Sometimes they got better. Sometimes, though, they continued to cave inward, pulling themselves inward until they collapsed…

"Our dormitories are divided by the sexes…” Theo and Rhane led the girl down the path towards the large, wooden doors to the mansion, watching Idie carefully the whole way. He was trying to read her, to figure out what was going on in that head of hers. What if it was, there was little doubt that she was in a dark place. He was worried.

“Cannae tell ye how many times I've caught scent of a student what thought he or she was cleverer than us an' thought we'd nae notice." Theo reached for the doors, swinging them wide open and leading the girls inside.

“Trust me, she’s not kidding,” he said with a slight smirk, “she finds you.” He thought back to his own… ‘excursions’. He’d managed to get away with it a couple of times (well, up until one of the telepaths caught a stray thought about his night out), but of all his failed nights on the town, Rhane had been the one to catch him just over half of the time. There was just no getting away from that nose.

The wall-crawler they passed shrugged as he was asked to detach from the wall, and sauntered past them nonchalantly. As they continued walking, Theo looked back to see the teen almost immediately latch onto the wall and crawl directly out the nearest window, probably to find a nice spot on the roof to lay in the sun. He shook his head lightly. Kids…

The tour continued, and Theo continued to keep an eye on Idie, watching how she seemed to be taking in her new world. As if being a mutant wasn’t enough, here was a new house, and a new school, and a new country, and a new everything- sometimes it seemed like some sort of nightmare, until you realized that for a lot of people there never was a new life waiting for them. Sometimes, people became mutants, everything fell apart, and they just had to sit in the ashes. She might not have realized it, but Idie really was a lucky girl.

“A roommate might make getting to know your way around easier,“ Theo said, agreeing with Rhane. “But only if you feel comfortable. If you need some space, we can get you a room alone…”

“Ye like music? Theo here teaches our music class if ye'd like that."

“Instruments, recording equipment, sheet music- we’ve got everything. If you’re not much of a musician, we’ve got arts classes, some sports teams, a few clubs, or the library has more books than you’ll know what to do with…” there was a pause, “but maybe before we get into that, we should start with those new shoes we promised you… the basement’s this way.”

"No, ma'am, I won't make trouble," Idie said quickly as Mrs. Russell and Uncle Theo explained the importance of obeying curfew. Mrs. Russell was a guard, it sounded like. One of the ones who would catch her if she tried to run away. That was fine, she had nowhere to go anyway.

They led her inside, and Idie followed obediently. Suddenly they were in an entirely new world. Strange people of all colors—and it really was all colors—roamed the hallways, some brushing her side as they passed, a few giving her curious glances. Idie nervously slid a little closer to Uncle Theo as they walked. But for all its oddness, it really did feel like a school. There were the uniforms, much like at home. Students talked and laughed and gave each other trouble, talked on phones and carried books. Though Idie didn't know what would be stranger, going to school with monsters or going to school withboys.

She glanced up at Uncle Theo, who apparently had been looking at her. Idie quickly looked away again, embarrassed. How long had he been watching her? Was she doing something wrong? Maybe she was supposed to be eating the chocolate? Oyinbo were so confusing. But she supposed she was the oyinbo here, she'd have to learn to manage. Anyway, she wanted the chocolate, so she peeled the top off the wrapper and took a small bite. It wasn't a brand she knew, but it was good, milky and sweet with something that crunched.

But maybe... maybe she shouldn't eat the chocolate? She was a murderer and monster. Murderers don't get chocolate. But murderers also shouldn't be careful to offend people. Maybe she could put it in her pocket like she was going to save it for later, then give it to... to who? Another murdering monster? And what was this about roommates?

Idie was not an idiot, she could tell that they wanted her to ask for a roommate. A living, breathing, roommate who she would probably burn to death just before she burned down the rest of the school. There was an awful lot of wood around. Why didn't they make the school from bricks?

"Are there m—," don't call them monsters, not to their faces, "—students who don't burn?" Idie asked after a moment, then realized how it might sound. "Not that I would do so on purpose!" she hastily added. "Just in case the machine breaks. By accident. I don't mean to break it. But if it runs out of batteries." Idie tried to cover her mortification with eating another bite of chocolate, right after which she remembered her plan had been not to eat it. She was just not doing well today.

And then they wanted to know what she liked, which of course made everything fly out of her head. "I like music," she said. Of course she did, everyone liked music. Do better, Idie. "I was in the choir at school. I play football with my friends, sometimes, or go to movies when we have the pocket money."

Money. That made her pause, and Uncle Theo brought up shoes. "I don't have any money. Or clothes, or anything else," she added after a moment. "I cannot pay for the shoes. Can I get work here?"

"I wouldn't expect ye t' make trouble," Rahne said with a small smile. "But we've all seen certain kids pull good kids into trouble."

She led the way up the stairs, eyes moving back towards Theo as he reinforced the point that Rahne was a bit of a bloodhound when she had to be. She was never the strongest X-Man, never the fastest, or the smartest, or the most powerful. But as a tracker, as someone who could follow the most minute of trails and find what needed to be found, she was unparalleled. Sometimes that was kids who thought they could sneak out and get up to some mischief.

Idie seemed panicked about the prospect of a roommate, but also eager to please, desperate to tell the two teachers what she thought they wanted to hear while voicing her own concerns. Rahne frowned slightly, turning back to Idie more fully while walking along sideways to keep going ahead.

"There's no need f'r you t' push yuirself just yet. If'n ye're nae comfortable with roomin' with someone else right now, or ever, that's no problem. 'Twas just a suggestion. Ye've got yuir own choice here, we're jus' makin' sure ye've got all the information 'fore ye make one."

Rahne shook her head as Idie was certain that she'd have to pay her way here.
"There's no need f'r you t' worry about money. We want ye to be a student first an' foremost. Learn yuir powers. Learn yuir academics. Learn you. I did it, Theo did it, everyone here who made it through t' graduation did it. We will handle yuir basic needs, so yuir focus can be on learning. Including yuir wardrobe, so no worries about that, aye?"

"But we've all seen certain kids pull good kids into trouble."

Theo raised an eyebrow. Was that him? Did she mean him? Couldn’t be… but maybe.

Idie was doing a good job covering up whatever tumult was raging in her head. She was a little fidgety, a little unsure, but the fact that she was walking around cautiously nibbling chocolate was, at the very least, a good sign. He thought back to his first night after being told he was a mutant- almost a full day lying in bed, refusing to leave even for meals. It could take time to re-structure your world from top to bottom.

When the girl finally explained her main aversion to a roommate, it was like having a pun explained- duh, of course that’s what she’s scared of. Rhane assured her that the choice was, as always, hers to make. And granted, it really was best that she make the decision on her own, given how many decisions had already been made for her by circumstance. They owed her at least the faculty to make some sort of decisions about her life…

“We also,” Theo added after Rhane’s reassurance, “Do have some students that can’t be burned. Some have powers like yours, or some kind of invulnerability. And I think one that’s actually made of rocks…” granted, Rockslide was a male student, so he couldn’t room with Idie, but the point stood- she didn’t have to be alone unless she wanted to, not here. “The point is, you don’t have to worry about your powers hurting people. Not here.” Worrying is our job…

And then the question of money came up. In all honesty, Theo had no clue how the school had managed to stay standing (figuratively, given that it had actually been knocked down that one time) under the financial burden of supporting its students, faculty, not to mention the unquestionably expensive supplies they used to create technology so advanced it seemed like it belonged in the movies… but whatever the way, it somehow worked itself out. Maybe the school was built on a diamond mine or something.

“Rhane’s right. You don’t have to worry about any of that stuff… this place was made so that people like us could get the help we need. People…” he chose his words carefully “… that nobody else can help. You can learn things here you’d never think of anywhere else. To a lot of us, this school is home.” It was at that point that they reached the elevator down to the basement. Theo pressed the call button, suddenly worried by the idea of taking Idie down there. There was no denying that the school’s basement had a sort of… militant…. Alien-like quality to it, given all the chrome, and the sleek design, and the way the doors opened by sliding into their frames… Would it be too much for the girl? It wasn’t as if they were trying to keep secrets from her, but shocks were probably the last thing she needed.

“You probably won’t spend all that much time in the basement levels,” he said as they waited, “Though, if you’re ever hurt, it’s where our infirmary is. As well as the gym. And a special training room we use for our powers…” There was more down there (so, so much more) but somehow, explaining why a school needed an underground jet hangar just seemed like more work than it was worth.

We've all seen certain kids pull good kids into trouble.

Was that a warning? A threat? Was she one of the good kids or one of the bad ones in that sentence? Was she doing this right or wrong? ARGH! Idie finally just nodded to Mrs. Russell, hoping the generic assent would be good enough.

And the roommate! She wasn't supposed to ask for one now? She didn't know anybody! How was she supposed to choose! A friend sounded nice, sure, but not if Idie was just going to blast her to death, and she wanted...

She wanted...

She wanted to stop time and go back to this morning, when she woke up in her own bed and had breakfast with her own parents and walked with her own friends to her own school, and she was herself and not this... whatever she was now!

But she couldn't have any of that, could she.

The chocolate suddenly tasted like dust in her mouth. She forced herself to swallow the bite she'd taken, then folded the wrapper over what was left and placed it in her pocket. Her eyes were doing that stinging thing they did when she was about to cry, so she scrubbed a sleeve across them to try and hide it.

She thought she was doing well, keeping it together. But then they were being sweet and kind and nurturing again and Idie just snapped.

"Will you STOP? Just STOP!" Idie yelled at them suddenly. "I KILLED MY PARENTS TODAY!"

And then she burst into tears.

Rahne stopped short as Idie reached her breaking point loudly and suddenly. The pangs of guilt struck Rahne immediately. She pushed too hard, tried too strongly and forwardly to make this girl feel welcome and at home that she hadn't noticed the extent to which she was suffering. And that was very negligent on Rahne's part.

She glanced over to Theo for a moment, frowning slightly before slowly, cautiously, stepping forward and wrapping her arms around the girl, making no move to interrupt her crying or attempt to silence her. She needed to get this out, and Rahne wasn't going to stop that.

Rahne waited until Idie was done before speaking, keeping her held securely, in arms that were stronger than they looked.
"I know, an' I am so sorry that happened t' you. And to them. And I am sorry we pushed ye too fast an' too hard. That was my fault, an' Theo was jus' followin' my lead. It was wrong and insensitive of me to hit ye over the head like that."

Idie had a pain that needed addressing right now, a pain that Rahne could only really imagine at this point. Imagine and empathize with. Now was not the time to play the "it wasn't your fault" game. It was not the time to tell Idie not to blame herself for what happened. She was in the midst of raw, anguished emotion and the message would likely not get all the way through. She simply needed to let the pain out as well as she could right now.

And have a supportive shoulder to cry into. Rahne was very good at that.
