Timeframe: February 7th, @ 3 pm Location: Chateau Russell, aka that little cabin the Russell's live in One thing Rahne Russell had come to recognize over the past year and change is that being a superhero and a teacher and a personal tutor and a wife and a mom (which at times felt like she also had to fill the roles of bloodhound, entertainer, wardrobe expert and sanitation worker) left very little time to just sit back and relax. Doubtless, the very early beginnings of this phenomenon must have been manifesting in Rahne's partner in crime fighting, her erstwhile counterpart, Avery Maximoff, because the more Rahne thought about it, the more she realized that outside of official capacity, she rarely saw her dear friend anymore. Well, with a relatively slow moment on-hand - relatively being the operative word because Greg was insistent on a new game he invented in which he pounced up to the couch's cushions, and then up and over the back of it, laughing like a maniac while he circled back around and repeated it - Rahne decided to do something about this very problem she had recently discovered. Thankfully, post-modern technological advances in combination with regular modern technological advances helped facilitate Rahne's plan. If Avery was off at hers and Pietro's apartment in the city, she could Wandavate over (was that the right word? If it wasn't, it was now). If Avery was on campus, she could simply get out of whatever she was doing and walk over. In the meantime, Rahne would be getting things ready for an old-style get-together, one they shared many a time before and would share many a time after. The kettle, the leaves and the steeper thing, the milk and sugar and shortbread cookies and - "Whhoooop!" a deft left hand caught an airborne werewolf-toddler by the straps of his denim overalls, mere fractions of a second before he would have crashed into his mother. She was getting good at that. And Greg, as he ever was, thought it was the most amusing thing I. The whole world, to make either or both of his parents drop whatever it was they were doing in order to catch him from catastrophe. Luckily, Rahne had known well enough by now to not carry the tray of tea supplies until company had arrived in case of toddler emergency. Greg still dangling from her left hand, her right hand was on her cellphone, texting. She wasn't the best at that, but she was getting better. avery - get ur minty green backside over here pronto. I got Darjeeling. Satisfied, she tapped "send", and set the phone down on the countertop before addressing her squirming, giggling passenger. "Alright, ye wee troublemaker," she growled, playfully as she hefted him up to eye level. "Lucky yuir mum's strong, 'cause ye're certainly gettin' heavy, you are." |

It had been almost twenty days since she had found out and only nine since she told Pietro about the little bundle, or rather bundles, of joy that were on the way. While overwhelmed and distressed by the unexpected news, after breaking it Pietro she felt a weight lifted off her shoulders and found should could look forward to their little surprises. However though it was accepted, it still felt fresh to her, like it wasn't really real. She assumed that she just needed a little more time to set in, perhaps when the twins were bigger and she could feel the more obvious changes going on. For now she just felt tired and a bit crampy and just a wee bit nauseous in the mornings. All symptoms she had dismissed in the beginning because winter made her sluggish and she had binged on cheese a while back which was never good on her system. It was typical to dismiss all the signs when one was an unexpected mother but she found that it wasn't anything she couldn't endure. Avery had heard horror stories in the past like the one woman who had severe morning sickness for the whole duration who couldn't eat anything but popsicles. Considering how terrible it could be, Avery was pretty luck. Or perhaps, a certain sister-in-law was keeping a special eye on her. After telling Pietro the news and hearing little twin heartbeats, she decided not to run around a spread the happy news. Not that it wasn't a joyful occasion, but Avery was just not one to throw herself in the spotlight even if it was an acceptable time to do so. She opted to spend the time being closer to Pietro and talking about baby things and their future. He was free to tell whoever he wished however but Avery planned on keeping quiet until she got into the safe zone of the second trimester…or at least until the news spread. Currently Avery stood in the kitchen of the Defenders, looking for a little something to nibble on while she surfed on her tablet for future maturity clothes that wasn't awful. Pietro had soothed her, proclaiming she would be the vision of beauty in a burlap sack. However while she kissed him for the compliment she took it as Pietro's way of saying that he couldn't care less what she wore. She chuckled to herself at that as she reached for a block of cheese when a dramatic 'dun dun dun duuuuun' came from her pocket. Pulling out her phone she checked the screen as she closed the fridge door. "Oh! Rahne!" She said with surprise, checking the whole message and tic-tacking back. ![]() "Piet..." Avery sing songed to her husband, already beginning to gather things up. "Rahne asked me over for tea. I'll be back in an hour or so." Throwing some country biscuits in container, she slung on her coat and scarf and headed to the enchanted closet door that ferried her from the Flatiron to Xavier's. Quickly chanting the activation phrase, she opened the door and with a "Love you, bye." she disappeared. Arriving at the main floor of Xavier's, she smiled to the faces she met as she hurried to the door, buttoning up her red dress coat as she did so. She actually hadn't been around for a week considering what she was going through, but it wasn't irregular for Avery to take a little time off considering she was married now and Pietro was home. The whole institute community were probably settling down to normal after the whole strange occurrence of a power swap. She was glad she hadn't been caught up with it to be honest. Through the grounds and the snow Avery hurried to Rahne's little cabin in the woods, all the while cursing winter as if it would actually make the snow go away. Politeness and old habit caused her to knock on the door before she opened the door as she sung out, her voice like a bell. "Rahneeee. I'm here!" And then a customary 'brrr' as she bathed in the warmth of the cabin and shook off the cold. "Greggy?" Her violet eyes scanned the room for the toddler than was a ball of energy, expecting him to greet her as soon as she stepped in. She reached out with her arms wide to scoop him up when he came, rubbing the tip of her cold minty nose against his as she always did. "My, my, my! You're getting big!" She hefted him on his her. "Rahne! What are you feeding this kid?" She then let him slip down and scurry about as he pleased, kids his age weren't prone to staying still for too long. Taking off her coat and scarf she retrieved the berry mixed tea biscuits and walked into the kitchen. "Sorry I haven't see you in a while. I don't know where the time goes anymore, especially since moving to the city. You've got your stuff on the go and I've got mine…and when did we become adults?" She smirked and opened her arms for a hug. "How're you doing?" If there was any thought in her mind about the two peas in a pod, so to speak, Avery gave no indication of it. |

There were a good many things that Avery was. She was kind, she was thoughtful, she was dependable, she had a way of making people she spoke with feel like in that moment, they were important and worthy of time and effort. She was also always down for a good cup of tea. It was something that Rahne had never quite been able to share with anyone else, not quite like she and Avery did. It was a custom and a ritual between the two women, a sacred bond of communion almost. So when Avery knocked and then entered, that very same smile that spread across her face many a time did so once again, and she simply, trustingly, loosened her grip on Greg's overalls, letting him drop to the floor and immediately scamper over to Auntie Avery to get attention and affection from her. He was a greedy boy in that sense. He craved being the center of attention and fought to get it. "Och, the usual," Rahne remarked with a dismissive wave of her hand and a smirk. "Chicken, beef, pork, venison, rabbit..." With Greg occupied by Avery, Rahne took the opportunity to bring the tray over to the coffee table and set it down, keeping a keen ear listening for when the kettle began to hiss. Not quite there yet, but it would be soon, she could hear it broiling around in there. "So glad ye could make it. 'Tis very selfish of me, I know, but I miss muh Avery time," she said with a smile, sitting down in one of the armchairs and gesturing for Avery to do the same. "So catch me up. What's it like livin' with right proper superheroes what everybody loves an' whatnot?" |

The elf nurse chuckled at the response, tickling Greg under his little chin. "And a few years you'll be big enough to bag your first buck. A nice eight point buck? Yes you will." Avery cooed, hew voice an octave higher than usual and sugary sweet. Letting Greg down to run about after Rahne set down the tea tray, Avery smiled as she breathed in the scents of Rahne's home. It was so comfy, cozy and warm which was very inviting this time of year, but more comforting than that was it's woody scent. There wasn't a scent like that on the Flatiron despite their beautiful rooftop garden and as settled as she was there, there wasn't a feeling the same there as it was here. Perhaps to Rahne, she was family and though a good chunk of the Defenders was family now, it was going to take a while to get to the same level as here. After hanging her coat and entering the living room, Rahne waved away her apologies. "Oh I miss it too," Avery agreed, setting up the biscuits and settling down in the chair next to Rahne. "We used to have tea all the time but we just got so caught up. I almost feel sometimes that I've abandoned you guys. But I could never leave this place, not fully." She then laughed off her silliness as this was something her best friend already knew. She didn't need to say such things. "So catch me up. What's it like livin' with right proper superheroes what everybody loves an' whatnot?" "Right proper superheroes, tch tch." Avery repeated almost offended if not for her smirk. "What makes them seem more superhero-y than us! Must be that shiny SHIELD badge eh? Actually…I've never seen a badge." She leaned back in her chair in a casual fashion, legs curled up to one side; a true testament that she was comfortable in this place. "But honestly, they're a nice bunch. Some are a little distant and quiet, but I figure with time the team will bond more. I'll admit it, it's kinda neat living up there rubbing shoulders with the big guns. But in the end, it's not too much different than the staff level at Xavier's. They've all got their stories, the shadows in their past and a reason for fighting. We get together now and then on the rooftop and have a fire, talk and goof around. Wanda and I've really got the garden up there together now. You really need to come over some..-hic-..sometime." It was like a light switch being flicked on as she felt a sudden surge of nauseousness flood through her. Her mint skin paled to a light sea form green and she hardly finished her sentence before she had to swallow back the urge to heave. Oh please not now…it's three in the afternoon. I can't yack up on Rahne's floor. Ughhh.. Go away, go away, go away. The bitch about morning sickness was that it was only a name of a symptom and not a time frame to which it was confined. Hopefully it would pass quickly. |

"Dinnae ye say that," Rahne laughed as Avery spoke to her boy. "I've already accepted that he'll likely be bigger 'n me by the time he's nine, I'd rather nae think about him bein' big enough to hunt on his own." Greg delighted in auntie Avery's attention, soaking it up like a sponge. Rahne knew that this was one aspect the boy did not take after his father. He was sociable, eager to interact and be interacted with. Surely, this boy was not going to be the type to hide from people, to shy away and be content to sit quietly when he could be out and about with friends, making new friends, and the like. She just hoped that the world would let someone like him blossom and interact. "Oh, they're nae more superhero-y than us, ye're just never gonna see people protesting Captain America," Rahne said, almost disappointed. How many times had they saved the world? How many times, and still there was a struggle for acceptance and peaceful coexistence? "Well, maybe I..." Rahne trailed off, looking over to Avery with a concerned frown on her face as her friend shifted her position, her complexion paled, and the barest scent of gurgling stomach contents emanated from her breath. Rahne immediately shifted to her half-wolf form, simply to further heighten her sense of smell, because something wasn't right. "Ye're nae down with flu, are ye? I should still have some... some..." She sniffed. Cautiously, taking in the information Avery was putting out and processing it in her brain. "Ye're scent's a touch different," she spoke softly, tilting her head to the left. Why would Avery's scent have changed? Secondary mutation? Drastic change in diet? What was... She remembered back to October of 2013, when Rahne's biological mother visited and said more than one thing that changed Rahne's life, turned everything upside down and inside out. She spoke of a change in scent, different hormones and chemicals causing the woman to smell different when... "How long have ye known?" Rahne asked, a smile slowly creeping across her face. |

It was a sad truth that Rahne had expressed about how Captain America was viewed differently in the eyes of this country than the mutant heroes. Avery chalked it up to the man being an icon in history, a literal living legend and he being a metahuman to the reasons why he didn't receive scorn as mutants did. It also helped that he was known by the general public as an all around great guy. However, Avery thought as she spoke out loud, "True as it may be, don't think for a moment that the minute he screwed up somehow and was seen in bad light that people wouldn't be nailing him to a cross. He's got celebrity status and people love to hate on celebrities as much as they adore them." Though it was less of the kind of dreary subject she wanted to get into so she just jumped back to the question Rahne asked her. And as she prattled on about her new life in the city and those she lived it, that's when it hit her. The near overwhelming slosh of nausea that she desperately tried to force back down. It's not exactly that she was hiding anything, it wasn't that she was keeping secrets from her best friend, she was mostly just trying to wait until she hit the 'safe zone.' But as she tried to stifle her urge to vomit, Rahne picked up on it right away, suddenly partially shifting and her nose tested the air. "Ye're nae down with flu, are ye? I should still have some... some…" "No no, I'm alright…" Avery assured her a bit half heartily as fought back the feeling. "It's probably just.." She trailed off, trying to make an excuse that made sense, not noticing what Rahne was picking up. "Ye're scent's a touch different," Rahne commented. At this Avery paused as the wave seemed to be passing, stiffening a little in her chair as she just that moment vividly recalled Rahne's biological mother visited a couple falls back. With just a sniff she had known that Rahne was pregnant even her best friend had not. Could Rahne do this too now? "Is it…really?" Avery asked, playing the fool. She was now a bit worried that Rahne might be mad or upset that she hadn't shared the exciting news, thus excreting the scents of wildflowers and cucumbers. Then a smile slowly brightened Rahne's features. "How long have ye known?" Her mouth dropped a little. So she could smell the change! Avery began to smile, giving a meek shrug until the smell of her own emote-scents were without warning far too much for her senses. The sickening wave returned. It wasn't so much the cucumber but the worried wildflower scent that agitated her super mom sense of smell. As her mouth opened to speak, it quickly clacked shut and covered by one hand. A sorry was exclaimed, though muffled, as she rushed to the bathroom to retch her guts up as politely as she possible could. "The 23rd. Technically it was the 28th but I was in denial for a week or so if that counts." She called out from the bathroom, door open as she knelt before the porcelain throne, wiping away the tears before another wave came along. When done Avery groaned, frustrated. "Ugh, these scents! How can you stand to be around me?!" "…I can't believe you actually picked up on it. How crazy it that eh?" |

Rahne clapped her hands together, letting loose a sharp laugh that startled her son in the middle of biting down on his plush rabbit, causing him to look up at mom like she'd suddenly gone crazy. "Oh, dinnae ye gimme that look, ye wee stinker," Rahne said with a shake of her head as Avery rushed off to dispense with the contents of her stomach. Oh, Rahne remembered those days, she luckily didn't get all too pukey, but when she did it was rough. She had been mostly a consumer, taking in so much food as to be embarrassing at times. And now look at the result. He was growing fast enough that all the raw material it took made sense. While Avery was in the restroom, Rahne got up, and headed over to the water purification filter thing (she couldn't remember which brand it was, or even if it was a major brand - it may have been an off-brand label), and poured a glass, having it ready. "I wasn't sure," Rahne said as Avery took as much time as she needed at the toilet. She'd give her space in that, as Rhne surely didn't want anybody hovering over her while she vomited, "I'd never... Ye know. I wasn't sure what scent change would happen, but... well, there's certainly something there, so I guessed," Rahne set he glass of water down next to Avery's teacup, waiting patiently. This was certainly some exciting, and unexpected news. Though she supposed not TOO unexpected. As Rahne full well knew, babies were a common side-effect of committed, married relationships between men and women, whether they were intending on them or not. "An' please! I remember you stickin' by muh side when I was practically inhaling that overstuffed lamb gyro, so this is nothin'!" |

Avery had heard Rahne laugh at her predicament as she clamoured down before the toilet and of course she was a tiny bit annoyed, but the kind of annoyed that was short lived because if the roles were reversed she'd be laughing too. With a groan she wanted to protest a 'not funny' but the almond milk she had that morning interrupted her. And so the flow of cover station went back and forth with Avery's voice echoing out of the bathroom. After questioning Rahne about how she picked up her shift in hormones, she was surprised to learn that she had mostly guessed. That meant that by her sickness outing her as pregnant, Rahne was able to make the connection to the change that was occurring within Avery. Getting back to her question, Avery told her how long she had known. Technically she was almost three months in but luckily because of Avery's physique and mutation kept her from packing on the pounds and even now she was hardly showing. It also helped that it was winter and sweaters concealed what belly was to be seen. Be that as it may, the babies sure didn't mind letting them be known, Avery thought grumpily as she heaved again. Weakly she apologized for her scents and Rahne thought nothing of it, after all she had been there for her. "Bleh….this feels different though," She returned, finally feeling that the bout was over and just sitting on the floor as she regained her strength. "This is a really soft rug." She half considered just laying there on the bathroom floor but a shred of stubbornness won over. She couldn't wimp out over a little morning sickness when she had carried on through bullet wounds and broken bones. Flushing the toilet, she got up and washed her hands and splashed her face and picked up a little dixiecup. "I'm borrowing some listerine." She called out before she finished freshening up. Hopefully there was still some ginger capsules in her purse that she had incase of moments like these. "Uuuggggh, sorry." Avery let out one last moan as she made her way back into the room, grabbing up her purse and seeing that Rahne already had an ice cold glass of water waiting for her. "I'm about twelve weeks in. I was going to keep it quiet until I got into the safe zone but everyone was bound to find out sooner than that anyway. Piet already told his side of the family a few days back and most of the Defenders know, soon enough word would spread." She smiled weekly and added with a laugh. "Just don't say anything until I tell Kyle. He'll have a kitten if he hears it through the grapevine. You just know it'll be a whole thing." She paused as she sipped the water, color coming back to her cheeks. "It's still a little bit surreal. I totally got what you were feeling when you first found out, though I didn't tell Piet until a few days later, mostly because I was scared. He made it all better though. Theres only a few times when I've seen him so overjoyed. Heh, I was sure he'd be a little more panicked like I was." "But more so, you should've seen his face when he found out…we're having twins." She added with a smirk towards her dear friend. |

"Take as much as ye need," Rahne answered, pouring out the tea after it had steeped in the pot. She certainly didn't miss those days, even if at times having the baby out there in the world was more difficult than it was having him inside. Well, maybe not more difficult per se. Different challenges. Very different. But she certainly didn't miss the chaos pregnancy threw the body through. "'Course it feels different! You an' I, we're drastically different on a physical level, there's no way we're goin' through the same stuff. You remember the jokes about possibly havin' a litter. Joking aside, I was actually concerned about that. This one's tough enough, I cannae imagine having four, five, however many that would mean." Rahne's eyes widened as Avery told her. "Twelve weeks. Twelve - oh, that's nae fair. Twelve weeks? Ye look fantastic! No way ye're twelve weeks in. Two, tops." Rahne shook her head. At twelve weeks, she herself had looked it, and very much so. Then again, she was on an inhumanly fast gestation schedule, having been done with the whole thing in just a little over five months instead of nine, so there was that. "Of course Pietro was happy. Scary or not, it's incredible news, and ye'll both be wonderful parents. Jack was terrified, but then maybe after a week, he got over that terror an' went into full on daddy mode an' has nae looked back since. Ye've got nothin' to-" Rahne stopped short, taking in the information Avery just dropped. She was not only pregnant, but she had twins? "Oh, now that's really nae fair. Ye have two in there an' ye look this good? Seriously - unfair. I'm officially jealous. I looked like I swallowed a watermelon after twelve weeks," Rahne sighed, and then let a smirk cross her face. "Ye're lucky I love ye so much, Greenie. This is fantastic news, plus - ooh! Aye, yes - ye can have muh stock of newborn diapers this wee stinker grew out of 'fore I could use 'em." |

Rahne cleverly retorted about how Avery thought her being pregnant was different when it was Rahne's time, because simply put, it was. Sure there were guild lines and the norms but every pregnancy was different and that was even more true when you were a mutant. She reminded her of the jokes of the 'litter' she'd probably have that nearly everyone teased her about, but in actuality she was a bit concerned that it would actually happen. Thankfully, she become octomom and was perfect happy with one. Weakly Avery chuckled. "Oh don't you think for a minute that I won't get teased too." She protested. "Little pea pod babies and all. Born in the leaves of a cabbage patch from the garden and all that. …Though, the thought of having a litter is a wee bit scary eh? Okay, you win." Being in the bathroom Rahne could not see the smirk Avery wore as she freshened up, knowing that she indeed did have two peas in the pod, so to speak. Once settled in the chair and feeling a bit better, casually went on with conversation as if the whole puking scene just didn't happen. She blushed a little at Rahne's disbelief at how far she was along, waving her hand to shoo her compliments. "Oh come on now, you forget how little time in 12 weeks is. Only a little time considering normal pregnancy lasts 40 weeks, sometimes more. But I'm also wearing a sweater so that creates an illusion annnnd I haven't officially dated it so I could be a week more or a week less. I promise you theres a little bump there." Avery chucked a little. And that's when Avery dropped the next little surprise that was not caught at first. Rahne was genuinely happy for Avery, reassuring her that she and Pietro would be fine parents, just what a good friend should say. It felt good to hear such words from her dear friend, but it couldn't be better than the look on her face when the 'twins' part clicked in. Avery snorted at her reaction as she protested about her side. "Oh c'mon now! You did NOT look that big back then. Silly Rahne. They're the size of a lime at this stage and with twins they're most likely a bit smaller." Avery reasoned with laughter in her eyes. "And how big can I get when my diet consists of salad, seriously." Then her eyes flickered to Greg and she sipped her tea. "Looks like you're gonna have two little friends, Greggy. I suppose he'll be looking out for them too," She glanced over to Rahne. "If he's anything like you and Da. And that's very reassuring." "I really wish I had done more baby-squattin' when Gregory was an infant. Feel like I'm going into this blind. Mom mode kicks in when the baby comes, please tell me that's not just an old wives tale." |

"Oh, I'm sure of it. Somebody's probably already got a full range of pollination jokes all ready t' go," Rahne said with a chuckle and a shake of her head. "Nae me, o' course, as I'd never be so crass." Avery reemerged, looking a little worse for the wear, but not so much so. Rahne remembered the feeling all too well. For something that was supposed to happen, for something that the female body was physiologically designed to be able to do, it sure felt unnatural. It felt like the body was going haywire, all systems were in panic alert mode and had no idea what to do. Rahne likely understood Avery's condition better than anyone else on campus at this point in time. "Twelve weeks was over halfway through f'r me, though," Rahne said with a sigh. "I kinda wish sometimes I had a full nine months. Everything was so fast an' so abrupt, I felt like I was bein' yanked through the whole process. An' maybe I dinnae look so big, but I felt it. So ye've got that t' look forward to." Rahne shook her head slowly, and set her teacup down on the table. "Alright then, lift it on up an' let's see, aye? An' fair warning, I'll put a hand on." Greg toddled over, up on his own legs at his awkward "I'm not entirely used to walking without my hands" way as Avery spoke to him, looking up to her curiously, almost as if he was trying to comprehend what she was saying. "I dunno, I guess it did in a way, but then again, Avery - you, me? We were already caretakers before our hubbies knocked us up. "Oh, I'm sure of it. Somebody's probably already got a full range of pollination jokes all ready t' go," Rahne said with a chuckle and a shake of her head. "Nae me, o' course, as I'd never be so crass." "Yes, the pollination bit," she said, waggle pointing her finger. "I almost forgot about that one. So stupid." She narrowed her eyes slightly. "But ya know, teasin's a lot easier to take when it between friends. I honestly don't mind it since I know we're not serious. Or at least, that's how it was growing up. The tighter the knit the more flack you got." She sipped her tea, finally able to enjoy it but kept herself from eyeing the biscuits that her tummy just wasn't ready for. They seemed like a good idea before she came but now she wanted nothing to do with them. Still, at least the tea was great as it had been a while since she had darjeeling. Though she didn't expect to be knee deep in pregnancy discussion today, it felt really good to let Rahne know. She had someone to go to for advice, well Rahne wasn't the only one, but she was someone she was very close to and the thought of having such a friend that just went through all that was comforting. And look at them now, going back and forth over tummy size. Avery paused as Rahne pointed out that she had a fast progressing pregnancy and she realized how short it had been. Time was flying and it just felt that Greg wasn't that old and that just the other day he had been born. And yet she could remember easily that her own wedding happened almost a year ago which little Greg had attended in a little mock suit onesie. "My god…I almost forgotten how quick that happened." She ran her through her hair. "Rahne, I'm getting baby brain already!" She cringed at Rahne's description of how she felt during her time and what Avery had to look forward to. She took a sip of tea and shook her head. Nope. Not ready for this. Not ready at all. "I know I'm like the embodiment of mother nature here, but this life giving, boho goddess loving every minute of it? I don't think that's me. Bloody, I'm not off to a good start as it is and you certain don't sound like yours was a walk in the park. Maybe quick like a bandaid was the way to go. From lime to watermelon and then done." "Alright then, lift it on up an' let's see, aye? An' fair warning, I'll put a hand on." Avery gulped her tea with Rahne's words. "Tch, ugh, Rahne." She complained, the whole time knowing that she wasn't getting out of this and Rahne would find out she was right. Avery wasn't the type to put herself on display, even in the summer she opted for a full piece swimsuit and for a nurse who often had to get hands on, she wasn't too fond of hands on her. "Fine fine, have a gawk at it. I suppose I'll have to get used to it." So she lifted the soft cream sweater she wore to reveal nothing much exciting. She may have been twelve weeks but it seemed more like a the bloated tummy after you ate too much chinese. Nothing but a little pook belly. And while Rahne had her look Avery spoke to Greg who on wobbly legs was toddled over. Of course he didn't understand what she was babbling about so she just ruffled his hair and tickled until his chin. "It's okay. Time they come you'll be able to bark a few words and say hello." Wondering about the parental mode that kicks in, at least in many cases of nature, she couldn't help to look to Rahne for a little reassurance. More or less she got what she expected to here. Some things come naturally and other things you just have to feel around until you get it right. Or something like it. But on the bright side, she helpfully pointed out, she did have a ton of aunts and uncles to help her out. Still, she did kind of feel like Rahne was more qualified for the job. Rahne dealt with kids all the time where as Avery mostly took care of the booboos. "Yeah, I've married myself into a big family and with my X-Man family it's even more so. I'm really grateful for that. At least I'll have all of you to go to when I'm going out of my mind not knowing what to do - cause I hear that happens. It's a little weird, though. When I came here I found a whole bunch of great men to surround me to replace my dad and fill that hole, but replacing mom…it just didn't happen. I mean, it's silly, I've got you, Wanda, Lorna and Jean to go to but still I kinda wish mom was still around to call up with questions." She smiled and laughed. "This pregnancy business comes with a lot of emotional baggage." |

"'Course it is. Lucky you, the worst ye'd have to deal with is probably a jab about weeds or whatever. I ever tell ye about the carton of canned dog food Jamie Madrox had shipped to the Research Centre for muh thirteenth birthday?" Rahne shook her head with a soft release of breath as Avery lifted up the sweater. Baby bump nothing, this was maybe a bit of gas in the guts, or a heavy meal. "Och, there's no way there's two in there. Come on, now," Rahne said with a smirk as she carefully placed a hand on. Felt normal enough, really. Greg seemed to want to imitate the gesture, and clumsily swatted his hand at her, which Rahne caught before contact and gently guided the rest of the way there. The expression on his face indicated clearly that he had no idea what the significance of this contact was, but he was hardly one to want to be left out. "Huwwa?" he chirped, before quickly growing bored of his hand being held in place and stifled to pull it loose. Rahne let it go and he wandered off, heading towards a rattling noisemaker toy that was his current favorite. "This'll be good. He enjoys playin' with Nate an' Nuya, an' bless 'em, they at the very least are alright with entertaining a baby, but they're... ye know, they're so much older 'n him. 'It's only a matter o' time I feel 'till they decide they're too old for Greg." Rahne sighed as Avery wistfully explained her family situation, a concept Rahne understood all too well. "I dinnae think we ever really get that," Rahne said, shaking her head. "I've never had a... ye know, a da, ever. The Reverend - that man was no father, in the slightest. And maybe I wasn't open to it, but I never found a substitute so to speak. Moira's my mum, that's never been in doubt, but a da? Never had it." Rahne shrugged, before taking a sip of her tea. It was still nice and hot, just as low-sweetened as she liked it. "An' then when the bio mum showed up - I dunno, I'd thought I was okay never knowing her, but then... ye know. Maybe the void never gets filled, aye?" |

Avery snorted at Rahne's anecdote of her 13th birthday. Indeed her mutation caused just as much, or perhaps more, flack and jokes than Avery's did. Still Rahne managed to grow up to be such a caring, kind hearted and optimistic woman, when she could have become angry and bitter. Honestly she had every right to considering the things she'd been through but Avery was happy things had went this way otherwise the two would never had become such good friends. Nonetheless, good friends still laughed at the other's expense and Avery let a chuckle out at Rahne's right this moment. "No he didn't!" Her voice bubbled with mirth, and she covered her mouth a little knowing she probably shouldn't laugh too hard. "You've never told me that! Ooooh but that does sound like such a Jamie thing to do…or Jonny. They both a handful, or so I'm told." Then Avery stood to let Rahne have a look at her tummy which was maybe a little disappointment as there wasn't much to see. It would come in time. She gave Rahne an apologetic look as she shrugged at Rahne's words. "Sorry! I might just be one of the lucky ones. Oooor it could be that I've been upchucking my guts up lately. It's not uncommon for women to drop 10 pounds in the first trimester. I promise I'll be right plump before you know it. I'll think of you every time I gorge on junk food." Avery winked, a smirk coming just in time to see Greg go in for a smack on her stomach only to be caught by his mother to give the tummy a gentle touch. Still confused with it all and becoming a bit uninterested a second later, he gave a growl and toddled off to find fun elsewhere. "Aww," Avery cooed as he left and then rolled her sweater down and settled back in with her tea. Rahne deemed her pregnancy to be good timing as the time gap between Greg and the older Nate and Nuya would soon grow tired of 'baby' Greg. Avery smiled and put down her tea. "Awe, Rahne lovey, that's just a thing every kid goes through. Right now, he's too little to notice that his friends are growing out of him. He'll be happy to have anyone play with him, I'm sure. He's still a baby after all. As for my two, I'm afraid they won't be much help until they're much older. Greg will be a toddler and babies are quite boring and time they're big enough to play, Greg probably won't want to play with them much as their interests just differ so much at that age. But by then Greg should be caught up to Nate and Nuya, and perhaps with his mutation he'll grow quicker then most children." She chuckled. "And perhaps mine will grow like weeds. The kids'll get along whatever age they are, since they'll be growing up together and in a world like ours, we need to stick close." With the run of the conversation moving onto family, Avery couldn't help to express how she regretted not having a mother or at least someone who she shared such a bond, at this point of her life. It wasn't a bad thing, she knew. Her mother had passed over ten years ago and she felt a little silly wishing she was still alive after all these years. After all, what advice could she get from her that she couldn't get from Rahne or Lorna. She suppose it was like how she felt on her wedding day, wishing her parents were still around now to share in the experience. Rahne sighed a little, knowing just how Avery felt. When she mentioned the reverend, Avery wrinkled her nose. Poor Rahne hadn't had it bad before Moira while Avery had a very typical and normal childhood. And while their beginnings were different, they both had voids in their life that were never filled. But Rahne believed that perhaps no matter what you do or who you try to substitute in, the void doesn't ever get filled. Softly Avery nodded. It was okay to miss her mom in this moment, it was only natural. She frowned a little as she began to wonder if Pietro too felt like this. She wasn't the only one here without parents after all. "You still keep in contact with her," Avery asked curiously. "I bet she'd have a good chuckle to hear that you can sniff out pregnancies now. …Kinda sounds like a Maury episode." |

"Oh, ye know he did," Rahne laughed. "He was awful, he was. Unopenable mag-sealed mayo jars, vibroshock pads in dinner seats... I'd like t' say he's grown up a touch since then, but... 'tis unlikely." Rahne smirked, taking a sip of her tea before picking up a shortbread biscuit for a nibble. "I'll hold ye to that, ye realize," she spoke with a melodramatic flare, accentuating how entirely non- serious she was about that declaration. "If'n I've got t' feed ye muhself even. Muh poor fragile ego cannae handle bein' the only fat X-Pregnancy." Rahne watched as Greg toddled away, clinging to his toy and attacking it with puppy ferocity, sinking fangs into it and shaking it around in his mouth. She wondered sometimes if he'd grow up like a person at all, if they weren't raising him to be human enough, but they were fleeting, temporary worries. "Ah, dinnae ye pay him any mind. Got the attention span of a gnat, he does. Or worse, of a Bobby Drake," she let loose a chuckle. "I'm sure I just worry too much. Almost two years is nae such a difference, aye? Ye'd best be ready, speakin' of that. Ye thought ye worried too much before - now everything is gonna make ye worry." Rahne nodded her head slowly at Avery's query, shrugging her shoulders as she did. "I do, aye. Call her up once a week to chat. 'Tis odd, really. She'll nae say it, but I know she wishes Jack an' I would move the family out there, to be with "our people". I feel bad deny in her that, but... well, we are with our people, an' I hardly think bring in' him to grow up in a werewolf retirement village is good for him." She had learned a bit about Meghan's people in the year plus of speaking with her. They were mostly older, with the youngest of them being in his late forties. There were few of them, and they were just settling out of a nomadic lifestyle into a permanent residence and not everyone was taking to it well. They wanted young blood in their clan - they wanted to rejuvenate their people. "Though I'd suppose we should probably visit some day," Rahne said. "I mean, even though he's got a gramma right here who does right by him, Meghan's a gramma too. 'Tis all fairly complicated, I suppose. Which is something I know ye full well understand. Yuir family complications make mine seem like simple two plus two." She chuckled, shaking her head. "Speakin' of, though - two o' ye got a plan in place in case gran'dad decides t' rear his helmeted head up an' get involved?" |
