Stealth. Tommy hated stealth.

It was something that was pretty easy for a speedster, move fast enough to be a blur and get in and out before anyone else noticed. The problem was this training exercise the use of powers had been forbidden, which meant no super speed, no phasing and no explodey hands. Something that Tommy wasn't prone to doing aboard the Helicarrier in the simulated training area anywhere.

The VR shut down for the fourth time this afternoon, the electric feedback signalling mission failure coursed through Tommy's torso. It wasn't enough to harm in any way, but it was sufficient to know it was there.

Rather than throw himself back into the training simulator Tommy instead shut it down and placed the sensors back upon the rack. He'd already passed enough classes so that he didn't have to spend his life as a junior agent and he'd already had field experience that counted in his favour. This was an extra set of training that he was choosing to study to try and up his game, but he wasn't getting the hang of it no matter how hard he tried.

Constant failure wasn't something that Tommy mainly bought into, so that was enough training for the day.

Quickly exiting the training area, Tommy made a super speed beeline for the changing rooms quickly replacing the green and silver uniform with his standard issue SHIELD uniform, it wasn't the most comfortable uniform he'd ever worn but it saved him having to buy continually shirts and trousers to look smart.

With training out of the way for today, and no missions to be out on Tommy's time was his own again - he'd probably catch up on some paperwork he had to do after his mission with his Dad in Europe but he didn't particularly feel like sitting himself at a desk and doing repetitive paperwork. Instead, there was a rumbling in his stomach, Tommy was pretty reliable when it came to the need for feed, and it had been a couple of hours since he had last eaten anything of any substance.

Grabbing his back up Tommy went to make his way out of the training area and up a few floors to the canteen. As the door out of the changing rooms automatically opened and Tommy sped out into the corridor he didn't see the agent coming down the corridor and ran right into the woman.

Thankfully he had barely had any room to get his speed up to a decent amount or they might have got hurt.

"Uh... My bad." Tommy quickly added as he quickly composed himself.

It was then Tommy saw who it was he had run into and one thought crossed his mind repeatedly.

Think not sexy thoughts.

Natasha hated watching others attempt stealth. It was boring. They took forever, trying to exaggerate carefulness in order to remain unnoticed. They took five minutes to do something that Natasha herself would do in twenty seconds. Not because she was fast, she could count three people who were so fast she looked to be standing still.

No, Nat was faster at this because she'd been doing it for sixty years, and by now she was confident enough in her skills and abilities that she was willing to risk noise and perfect cover to reach her goals.

Tommy, Agent Shepard, Speed, whatever one wanted to call him, was one of those speedsters she'd thought about, and she was monitoring his attempts at stealth without his powers.

She'd watched him fail for the fourth time, and give up on the session. Who's he was in the locker room, Natasha was making her way out of the monitoring room and down the hallway. She wasn't sure if she should drop some helpful tips on the agent, or maybe she was better off letting him figure it all out on his own. Maybe a shot of coffee with Jac or Bucky could help her decide. Fate, apparently, had its own plan, because it was about that time that Tommy decided to attempt running her over.

"Well, as long as I'm not having to go into traction, were ok, Agent." She said with an exasperated smile. She didn't bring up the fact that this man boy had the same face everyone else did when they'd were trying not to imagine her naked. Instead, she made it easier to forget about it by moving forward with the interaction.

"So, being sneaky in slow motion is getting to be too much for you?" She said, indicating with her head back toward the VR room.

"I wasn't going that fast, so I think you'll be good." Tommy smirked quickly regaining composure over himself. Though that was easier said than done, thankfully though Tommy was pretty sure that Nat hadn't noticed, or at least he hoped she hadn't noticed where he was looking. He couldn't help himself, not really, he had a weakness for the ladies. He couldn't ignore them no matter how hard he tried, and they frequently got him into trouble.

"I don't like it, and I don't see the point of having to go slow for it." Everyone kept extolling the virtues of going slow and learning to perform without his powers, but Tommy's powers were him, to go slowly was painful and something he avoided at all costs. "I've learned to fight without superspeed, but everything else is proving harder than I thought it would be. It's not like I really need to go slow for stealth. I'd be better off going through a place at max speed, and being able to phase through walls than taking it one step at a time. I'm less likely to be caught." Which was true there were few who could put up the same sort of speeds that Tommy could, and people were less likely to notice him when he was a blur.

Still the powers that be wanted him to learn so he couldn't exactly say no, even if it left him frustrated and wanting to do anything but train. "How do you do it?" he asked, wondering whether there was some sort of trick that he had missed when going through his training. Truth be told though, Tommy wasn't really cut out to be a real infiltrator, he was built for the smash and grab missions where his speed really did back him up.

"How do I do it? As fast as possible." Natasha said, looking at Tommy as if he'd said something funny. Honestly, it really was funny. She spent most of her time as an agent getting so good at something, that by the time she was ready to utilize her skills in the field, she was able to do it faster then any of the nonpowered members of her team.

"Trust me, Mr. Shepard, getting better at stealth is a lot easier than trying to cover up a bunch of dead bodies because you weren't silent enough. Nothing is as difficult as trying to finish your mission without getting caught because everybody's friends are lying dead in the corridors." Was that a bit of an over share? Maybe, or maybe it was something that he really needed to hear. Maybe Tommy needed to remember that most of the things you learn as an Agent of SHIELD Acted as a secondary option to having to kill someone. Maybe that was enough of a motivator that he could go back into training without having difficulty.

Or maybe it would be enough of a shocking sentence to shake him from thinking about her uncovered body. Maybe not, maybe he'd seen and heard some serious shit in his like like she had. But hopefully it did the trick.

"Tommy, I'd be happy to help you with a few tricks on how to be stealthy. Maybe by me teaching you the tricks of our trade, one day it'll come back good for me." Natasha actually kind of enjoyed helping other agents get better at things. Not only did it make more competent people for her to rely on in the field, but it helped develop a reputation for her of being helpful, and therefore making her even more integral among her coworkers. Not that that was the most important thing on her agenda, but it did help whenever you had plenty backers among your peers to help you push a mission to the forefront or simply try to get a policy to work for the betterment of the agency.

"So, Agent Tommy Sheppard, what do you say? Do you think you could hang with an old gal like me?"

"I don't need to leave dead bodies though, I can run through walls, and outrun anyone on this planet," Yes there might be two, maybe three people that could keep up with him, but they didn't count. Though Tommy soon figured that it wasn't a comment about his own Agentiness, instead a reference to Black Widow's own past, "My usual tactics is to run and hit them from all angles until they've had enough punchy fun times to go sleep." CQC was easier than weaponry and Tommy was most definitely never going to use any sort of gun if he could help it, if he really needed a kill option he had one at the tips of his fingers and even then it was a power he didn't like to use unless he absolutely had to.

The truth was this wasn't anything that was ever covered at Xavier's and for good reason, they weren't spies and perhaps he was a little out of his league and did need some help from someone that actually knew what they were doing. "hmmm, if you can teach me stealthy then I'm in," He expected that she was going to have her work cut out, but he wasn't going to go out of his way to be awkward, that wasn't his style, he might be the most serious agent but he enjoyed his work and worked hard at.

It helped that this wasn't the school, and he had the opportunity to prove himself without having to compete against the bosses favourites, and this sort of work was much more suited to him than hanging around in a school and waiting for the bad guys to come knocking at the door.

"So where do we start? And you're not going to make me wear a null-cuff are you? I don't play well with those things and pretending I don't have powers only hinders me on the field," Even if it helped to get used to powers not always being there, Tommy wasn't one that could cope without his and so he everything he did he had to learn to do at superspeed first.
