afternoon

She'd disappeared times before. Months at a time. A year here, a month there-- always a reason, always a place. She didn't always remember the whys or the in betweens. it was complicated. It was painful. It was unknown. Spiral, and monsters, white faced and red eyed specters drifting idly through the lost portions of her admittedly addled mind. So few knew and even fewer got glimpses into the depth of her mind and the secrets that laid under the tremulous past that she'd survived through. it'd eaten her alive at one point and driven her to dangerous depths of control and sacrifice. Kill your heroes? It was the past for so many but she'd lived it in ways few had. Breathed it. Stood at the foot of the chaos and demanded the safety of her home and kind.

It'd nearly cost her life but they'd all survived as they always would. They rebuilt. They had peace. Recovery. Quiet moments to recover from their wounds. So many needed these times of quiet peace in order to survive. But Alix? There were very few she'd have ever admitted it to but she never felt at ease in peace. Perhaps it was her mind-- a constantly searching, constantly active maelstrom of thought from a radius she didn't remember anymore. Chaos and pain-- it was always there even in the small things. Perhaps the grander scheme gave her something to focus on. She'd tried to live with the peace for a time and assit in the rebuilding. She'd known full well that Jamie needed that time to rebuild and to recover because his past, unlike hers, had been a far different thing.

But Alix? She'd grown anxious. Uneasy. Somewhere there were mutants that needed help. The global effects of the illuminati hadn't been so readily fixed and in the 3rd world, things had been horrible. So she'd gone there. To warvvtorn nations and to backwoods hovels that had no superhero teams, no pillars of mutant and human kind to usher in the new round of peace. She'd joined them in the mire and had helped to rebuild. But it never lasted. Home was where she belonged and when whispers of change at home reached her, she'd eventually found her way home. As always, she came back. She always found her way back to Mutant Town or to Xavier's and back to her family and friends. She wondered about Jamie-- he'd always been able to contact her if he needed and the others? They could do the same. But they must've been alright enough.

But she couldn't stay gone anymore and with a small worn out moped that had been dug up on craigslist when she'd come back stateside, she'd pulled through the gates of Xavier's midday on a Saturday and stood-- a bit nervous, a bit apprehensive-- looking towards the doors that had been her home almost 10 years ago. Older, calmer, yet somehow looking the exact same she had years ago. Why here? Why not mutant town or the xfi HQ? To be honest, she had no idea. Instinct had driven her here and not there so she stood-- just barely at the edge of entering back into the world that she'd left 2 years ago.

Anyone who had seen the youngest resident of Xavier's Institute with any frequency would know how rare it was to see a human-looking toddler ambling around the school, in that clumsy way toddlers do, still figuring out the whole "walking" thing. His mother walked close behind, camera phone trained on the boy, filming what to anyone else would seem completely normal.

But this boy was rarely in a human form. He had no real control over shifting, for one thing. It would happen at random, or when severe mood shifts took place, but never because he willed it. And if he could indeed will it, he certainly wouldn't choose to take this inferior human form. He couldn't run like he liked to, on all fours and very very fast. He wasn't nearly as strong, and his sense of balance wasn't nearly as acute.

This was perhaps the longest he'd held this form short of falling asleep in it, and Rahne wanted to document it as well as she possibly could.
"Oh, where're ye goin' in such a hurry, ye wee rascal?" Rahne asked, and sure enough, Greg's speed had picked up a bit, both the corduroy of his overalls and the diaper he wore crinkling and swooshing in a rapid, arhythmic pattern as little baby feet stomped on the floor with each step. It was true, the boy seemed to be very intent on getting somewhere, by how fast he was moving, his little fists balled up and held at chest-height as he moved along. The only thing that betrayed the illusion of intent and purpose with his walk was the fact that he wasn't watching where he was going, instead darting his eyes and gaze around at everything around him. The colors, the shapes, the scents - this school was a cornucopia of sensory input everywhere you went, regardless of whether or not you had superhuman senses.

Of course, watching everything mean that you missed what was right in front of you, so Greg did not see Alix standing in his path until it was too late, and the little toddler bumped into her legs, bringing his momentum to a sudden halt. He looked up at the strange woman with eyes wide, nose twitching as he tried to take in the new woman's scent, but this human form wasn't so good at that.

"Alix!" Rahne said as she caught up, tapping the home button on her phone to end the recording before slipping it into her pocket. "Sorry about the crash there. Once he's gotten 'imself goin', he likes t' keep it goin', ye know?"

Rahne tried to remember the last time she'd seen the young woman. It had certainly been a long time. Almost felt like a lifetime ago, and perhaps in some way it was. Life certainly had changed quite a bit since then, that was for sure.

"What brings ye out this way, if'n ye dinnae mind my askin'?"

She smiled down at the little boy at her feet, and waved with a friendly, calm smile without speaking. She'd pointedly made the choice and without particularly knowing how he'd respond-- even with all the telepaths that were always at the school-- she just glanced towards Rahne with a genuine friendly smile. Rahne had always been a welcome addition to life-- a warm and calm center to an otherwise chaotic life.

::Well, Jamie and the rest split while I was helping with relief efforts--:: She paused thoughtfully with a gaze that betrayed nothing of any feelings that might've shown up on another, less controlled person. It'd always been her way and it wasn't exactly surprising that she'd wash over anything in regards to that with quiet propriety. It wasn't important, really, and she'd go find Alex in the morning to work up a new place.

::So I figured I'd stop by-- see how everyone was-- find out if anyone ended up here after the show, you know? I'll probably head to Alex and the rest after this-- I can't not live in mutant town, you know?:: Still the even, calm smile that had always been the norm for her even as she talked about the sort of change in life that would've sent a great deal more many into nervous uncertainty. Then again-- when had anything for Alix ever been a even and normal pace of life? Maybe more than any other, she'd gone through teams, relationships and events with a certain sort of drift that never left her exactly grounded. But then-- as a reoccurring theme-- she'd always fit better in the violent, tragic times where sacrifice and battle were the day to day.

::You weren't even married yet when I left-- Look at you now. He's very cute.:: She willingly shifted the subject from XFI and the ill-fated television show that had driven so many apart and away.

Rahne nodded her head slowly, taking in what Alix was telling her. It had been some time, but thankfully, Rahne was familiar, very familiar even, with the feeling of psychic conversation. No matter how many times or how far Dani Moonstar traveled, Rahne missed that feeling, so this was mildly reminiscent of that. The same communication centers in her brain buzzed and hummed with electrical activity, a feeling she'd come to be associated with certain feelings of love and friendship.

"I'd heard about that. Well, Jamie told me, but he was nae terribly..." Rahne waved her left hand in a circle as she trailed off, searching for the word that stuck on her tongue. "Forthcoming? About the details. I know how badly he wanted that to work, so I'm sorry it didn't."

She could imagine, though. Stresses of being filmed, of managing both a detective agency and keeping a network happy. She was sure that the show producers wanted certain things, pushed for inter-office drama and conflict to bolster ratings and water-cooler talk. It was the kind of stuff that could destroy friendships, let alone working relationships.

"I think he may have gone off t' find himself - literally," she said. "Which... Is a good thing, I'd say. Even the Multiple Man cannae be spread so thin."

She glanced down to her baby, who was still looking curiously up at Alix. There were clearly things he didn't understand going on here. His mother was talking, but the lady wasn't. He didn't understand much, since he was still so young, but he understood that when grown-ups talked, it was a two-way conversation.

"Aye, time flies," Rahne said with a soft smile. "But 'tis really nae quite so long. Apparently, I'm a very fast baby-maker. Inhumanly fast even."

She knelt down to Greg's level, holding his hand gently.
"Greg, this is Alix. Can ye say 'Alix'?"

"Ahmmmm," he muttered, slipping his free hand into his mouth.

"It's a start," Rahne smirked, standing up. "He's nae been terribly quick on speaking. He's got 'mama', 'da', 'ball', and a few sounds that almost sound like words."

"Papa, I can play with Baby Grr?" Nuya looked up at his dad after seeing Rahne following the baby down the hallway. Greg was his other best friend, along with Nate Summers, and even though little werewolf was barely half Nuya and Nate's age, he benefitted from a quick physical development. This capacity to keep up, and sometimes outdistance, the two older boys during play made the difference in their ages not matter too much to the young Rasputin.

"Well, it seems he's playing with his mommy right now, but maybe when they're done you can too. Let's follow them and see where they're going, Da?"

"Da! Is good deal, Papa." And with that, Nuya saw the conversation as concluded, and began following after the Russells.

Little Greg was hoofing it, where ever he was heading, Piotr thought. And Nuya was doing his best to stay out of Rahne's way, to be a good boy.

The the little toddler bumped into a pair of nice legs. Greg looked up, and so did Nuya and Piotr.

"Alix!" Rahne said, catching up to Greg. "...What brings ye out this way, if'n ye dinnae mind my askin'?"

Alix, for her part, smiled down at Greg before carrying on a conversation with Rahne. As the two of them spoke about the way life tended to change, Nuya tugged at his father's pants leg.

"Da, Nuya?"

"Papa, can we play now?"

"Well, it doesn't seem that there could be any harm in it... Here, let's go say hi to Alix, and you can ask Rahne yourself."

"Who is Alix, Papa?"

"She is a really good friend from when your papa was in school, like you are."

"Ohh.... Ok!"

"Greg, this is Alix. Can ye say 'Alix'?"

"Ahmmmm."

"Miss Ray!" Nuya began, realizing immediately he was being louder than needed. He started again, this time much softer, "Miss Ray, can I play with baby, Grr?" Now that he was paying attention to what he was saying, Nuya's stutter was once again more prominent. The more he had to think about what he was saying, the harder his stutter impeded him. Still, it was better than being constantly there like it was when he began learning English.

"Nuya, remember what we said? Say hello to Alix."

"Oh, oh yeah. Yes sir. Hello, Miss Alix. Am Nuya Rasputin."

::Yea, I'm sure he did too.:: She left it there, and pointedly drifted her own thoughts away from it, and onto the now two children present on the scene and the curious way Greg was looking up at her. She shifted nervously.

::I'm sure there's still too much fun to think about.. besides all the speaking:: She smiled pleasantly and dropped her gaze downwards for a moment to glance at Greg. She'd never say it, but children were always something of an awkward point for her. She wasn't sure how to take them, really. She did her best always but at the end of the day? She wasn't even sure if she should ever talk to them with their development still going on and her mind being what it was. She was no scientist and no professional-- but the worry was there. Add in that their thoughts were no where near as comprehensive and it was just all together something that she wasn't good at.

::Hey, Piotr.:: her smile held pleasantly and without reveal.

::Have they--:: She paused briefly and considered what was next. Emma, Jean, Rachel and god knew who else were at this the school and telepaths... but she had no way of knowing if they'd been spoken to in the particular way that she was forced to.

::learned about speaking with thoughts? I don't want to go jumping in without warning:: She nodded quietly, and smiled won.

Rahne glanced behind her, the sound of two very different gaits thumping out on the floor. One was heavy, but not because of particularly forceful footfalls, but because of the height and mass of the man making them. The other was lighter, more rapid. But moving at a similar speed. Didn't take much sleuthing to figure out who they were, even if she couldn't catch their scents floating through the air currents cooling the mansion down.

Greg, for his part, turned around wide-eyed, at first startled when his friend and his friend's dad arrived. He was so unused to being in a human form, so unused to lacking the physical elements that made him uniquely him that it was almost as if he were underwater. Hearing and smell and coordination were so muffled, that he tended to miss obvious details, tended to be lost and adrift trying to make sense of a world that was suddenly less vibrant and full of details than he was used to.

His shock caused an involuntary transformation, his werewolf self bursting into formation, a change Rahne had become used to being ready for at a moment's notice, as signified by her quick and deft adjustment of a button-up panel on the back of his overalls to let his tail loose before he pounced his buddy, reacting with puppy-like enthusiasm and play instincts.

"Heh - aye, go figure - ye spend some time abroad, come back, an' all of a sudden, we've gone and multiplied on ye," Rahne laughed, shaking her head. "Gonna be more soon, too. Avery's got twins on the way. Which will either be a blessing or a nightmare. Likely both. Lord knows I have a tough enough time keepin' up with one."

Alix's question, though, Rahne had to think about for a bit. Considering how many telepaths there were, one would think the question would have come up more often. Surely she remembered her first telepathic experience all those years ago, hearing the voice of her mother's sometimes-paramour Charles Xavier in her head as a little girl, and it was jarring to say the least.

"Ye know, I'm nae sure, if ye'd believe that. I say go for it. Give it a try, but maybe be gentle about it? I hardly know what his mind could be like in there, but I imagine it'd be a bit chaotic."

Greg turned, obviously surprised for the relatively sudden appearance of the two Rasputins. The kid, from what Piotr remembered, spent the majority of his time as a cub rather than a child, so he was probably suffering from lessened senses. Which explained the surprise. The boy's surprise triggered a transformation that resulted in Greg bounding at Nuya, who laughed as his friend bowled him over and they began to play.

::Hey, Piotr.::

"Alix, your visits are too far apart. It's really disheartening to think that I can barely remember the face of such a good friend."

Nuya paused in his play with Greg to look at his father, unsure why he was talking as if Miss Alix had said something to him. She didn't say anything, surely he would have heard it.

"Yeah, we're really taking matters into our own hands and sprouting the next generation of x-men."

::Have they... learned about speaking with thoughts? I don't want to go jumping in without warning::

Rahne brought up that she couldn't imagine if Greg had encountered telepathic speech, and Piotr nodded in agreement. As many telepaths as he knew, and he was sure that they'd as of yet attempted to speak to Nuya in that manner.

"I don't know any better way to introduce them to it than right now. Just, like Rahne said, just be gentle. Although, it's you, so there's no question about it really."

"Papa?" Nuya said, stopping his play again, "Papa is talking with Miss Alix?" He was really confused. Miss Rah and Papa were carrying a conversation with somebody, but he'd yet to see her even open her mouth.

"Yes I am, Nuya. Would you like to talk to her? Ask her a question, something cool." Piotr said, prompting the interaction for his son, who looked a little skeptical for a moment. Finally he relented and smiled up at Alix.

"Miss Alix, do you like play supaheros? My friend NateNate is CappaMurka and I am Bucky."

::I couldn't help it, Piotr!:: She smiled pleasantly. ::There were people needing help and-- well-- you know me. Can't say no to some thrilling rescues.:: She trivialized the whole thing easily and readily and ceased the conversation on Jamie as she turned back to Rahne. More children. It was amazing how much everyone had changed while she'd been gone.

::Knowing the likes of Pietro-- I'd go with both.:: She smiled and made a comment that if he'd been here, she'd have never had made, even in jest. He'd be a brilliant father, however, and Avery would be a fantastic mother. Her nature would balance and his haughtiness would make for some very proud twins.

Then, it was back onto the children in front of her. The idea of talking to children was complicated. In some way, it was good that they'd learn about it early, exposed to the method of talking before it'd become something out of the ordinary. But at the same time? Who knew how her words would come out.

::It is very chaotic:: Alix confirmed with a smile and glanced at the two very different parents quietly. ::But not unreasonably so.:: Her strange eyes fell onto the two boys in quiet uncertainty. It'd been a long time since she'd actually thought about how strange and out of the ordinary it was that she'd speak with thought alone and the reticence translated only barely in the way she glanced at Rahne and Piotr one last time.

::I do:: She smiled and barely pointed to herself as if to make it clear that she was the one talking and that the pointedly softer than normal, delicately voiced voice was her own in his head. ::That's so cool.. what're your superpowers?::

For Greg she was even more careful. He was younger, and the transformations probably were a little chaotic, but again carefully she smiled, and gave the fainest wave to the little boy wolf. ::Hi Greg, I'm-- Miss Alix:: adding 'miss' was the strangest for her, and her carefulness was clear even in her body language.

It was, as always, fascinating to watch these two very different boys, from very different genetic stock, yet similar circumstances, play without a care in the world. If only life could always be this pure, this innocent. She prayed each night that the world would let them keep their innocence for as long as possible, that it wouldn't force them to abandon childhood early, force them to fight for their lives and the lives of the people that they cared about.

"Well, far be it f'r any of us t' hold anyone back from tryin' t' save the world, aye? Bloody thing always needs saving, it seems," Rahne chuckled, before she glanced down to her boy, who looked startled and a bit bewildered as the voice of Alix sounded out directly into his mind. Playtime paused immediately and Greg stood on point, both feet and one hand planted on the floor, the right arm lifted cautiously as he looked around to try and find it, sniffing at the air cautiously and slowly.

"'Tis alright, Greg, she's talkin' t' you!" Rahne said softly, glancing over to both Piotr and Alix with a shrug of her shoulders.

He frowned slightly as she made it as clear as she could that she was the one speaking to him, and he tilted his head to the right as he contemplated what was going on.

"Mmmmih!" he sounded out, forcing the last syllable out sharply.

"'Tis a start, ye wee stinker," Rahne laughed. "He'll get the hang of talkin' 'fore too long, then I get the feeling we'll have a hard time gettin' him t' be quiet."

::I couldn't help it, Piotr... you know me. Can't say no to some thrilling rescues.::

"Oh, I know alright. You're a superhero through and through." He grinned. Most of the people he knew would do exactly the same as Alix if they weren't tied to one spot through something or other. If Piotr hadn't been a teacher and father and x-man? Hell, maybe he'd have gone with Alix. Or maybe he'd have become a full time painter, as it was always one of those things that stayed on his mind.

She looked nervous after both parents indicated that they would love for Alix to be their children's first telepath, but then Nuya asked his question and things seemed to click into place.

::I do. That's so cool.. what're your superpowers?::

Nuya, confused for a moment at who was speaking, or if sound was even being made, took the cue from Alix's gesture that it was her, and while it would be something he thought about a lot afterwards to such lengths that it gave him headaches, he smiled really big and accepted it.

"You talk pretty." But then answering her question stumped him again. Did she mean Bucky's powers? Or did she means his own?

"Bucky is super hero, like CappaMurka. Bucky is smart an strong an CappaMurka's bes fren. He speak in growly voice like this. Like Batman in movies." He then looked at his father, worry in his face. His father understood all too well, and gave Nuya a big smile. This was the thing that they'd talked about a couple times recently.

"I, I don't has p-powers," he said, his stutter surfacing at his nervousness, "like like best fren's NateNate an' Baby Grr. NateNate plays wif metal like his mommy. And Babr Grr is like his mommy. But I has n-no powers."

Piotr nealt with his son as Alix also addressed Greg, and he gave his boy a hug. He smiled as Rahne joked at Greg's attempt to repeat Alix's name, but quickly looked back at his son.

"You remember what I said? Nate and Greg got theirs very early. You just got to wait a bit. It's ok, Papa had to wait a long time too. Now who is awesome?"

"We awetome, Papa." Nuya said, smiling and hugging his dad again. And just like that he was back to talking to his new friend.

"Is Miss Alix gonna be X-Man too?"
