5/19/15 Early Morning *** If Bobby hadn't overheard some of the students mention her by name he would be convinced Kitty no longer lived in the Mansion. He'd been back almost a week and still hadn't managed to fulfill his personal mission for returning. Of course the truth of the matter is that had he wanted to catch her alone it was just a matter of staking out her apartment like some creepy stalker, but while he'd thought of nothing else, other than returning, letting her know he'd been a complete idiot for not seeing what was in front of him all this time, and hope that she hadn't gotten over him, now that he was back, it dawned on him that he didn't have a clue how to broach the subject. That fear, kept him from seeking her out, afraid she'd be able to see right through him and then lay into him for making her wait until she got over him. There was another voice in his head, that sounded suspiciously like his father that told him that he was no good for someone like Kitty and that after hurting for so long he definitely didn't deserve her. Thankfully, there was another voice in his head that sounded like his mother that encouraged him to bring the nice Jewish girl home to meet his parents. He smiled at that thought, he was absolutely sure his mom would adore Kitty, at the same time he was pretty sure his dad would make an ass of himself and come across as the 21st century Archie Bunker. All these thoughts ran though his head as he wandered through the first floor, trying to be casual, but in reality searching. He knew Kitty was the IT wizard for the school and X-Men and so if he searched long enough he'd find her making rounds to fix the machines when one of the staff or students managed to reformat the hard-drive by accident or change their log-on password to something they didn't know. He still didn't know how to bring up the delicate subject, he just knew he couldn't not be in her presence any longer and would risk the humiliation just to be near her. He'd already made circuit of the offices and was about to slip upstairs and check the study lounge when he spotted her, coming out of the library. She didn't see him yet, so the mischievous part of himself battled between two approaches. The more immature side wanted to bean her with a snowball, but the more level-headed side that realized pelting her with a snowball wouldn't be the best way to win her affection settled on sneaking up behind her and covering her eyes. As quiet as he was able he slipped up, reached around to cover her eyes and whispered in her ear, "Guess who's back?" |

Even in a mansion full of would be mutant superheros at the very core they were still very human and to be human was to error and that was part of Kitty's job at Xavier's was fixing human error when computers and other technology went on the fritz. This case in particular was trying to eradicate some nasty virus from a computer in the library she assumed one of the younger male students tried looking up some shady websites that they shouldn't be looking at and ended up downloading a virus on the computer which brought it offline from the rest of the schools network. A pretty easy and mundane job in itself and most of the hard work was already done after she had fought the virus off enough to be able to install the anti-virus software to finish the job. But while the anti-virus software was doing its job. Kitty herself could only sit idly by and twiddle her thumbs and watch as the numbers of the files scanned and potential threats continue to rise as the time remaining on the scan continued to fluctuate. When the countdown hit 2 hours and 47 minutes however thats when things got interesting as two chilly hands wrapped around her face and if that wasn't enough of a give away as to who the culprit behind her was the familiar voice of none other than Bobby Drake himself asked 'guess whos back?'. Kitty for a moment contained her excitement as one of her best friends had finally returned to the mansion enough to say. “Eminem? He's back again and you are telling a friend?” Kitty then rose from her seat and turned around to hug the Iceman. “I missed you!” She said as she pulled him in for the embrace. After a moment she broke the hug and took a stepped back while whacking Bobby with an open hand on his shoulder. “And thats for leaving in the first place!” Kitty said shaking her hand a little bit after the impact. “Where have you been? It hasn't been the same around here without you.” Kitty confessed as she looked away from him briefly to once again check the numbers on the computer screen. |

“Eminem? He's back again and you are telling a friend?” A snort erupted uncontrollably and he mouthed to himself Eminem? He shook his head and realized he walked into that one. Kitty then rose from her seat and turned around to hug the Iceman. “I missed you!” She said as she pulled him in for the embrace. It took all of his willpower to not react to how warm she felt in his arms and mentally cursed himself for being a blind idiot all these years. He almost reached to pull her back into his arms when she released the embrace, but figured that would be too forward and he was afraid she'd think he was teasing her. And then he was rubbing his arm where she whacked him. She definitely pulled the blow since it was meant in jest, but it dawned on Bobby he was falling for a woman that likely could kick his face in powers or no powers if she so chose to. He held his hands up in surrender and smiled at the thought of her missing him. His face stretched into a lopsided grin, "would you believe I got a job for a few months?" He continued on, "I stayed with my folks for a bit and tried to be normal." He shook his head, "my Dad was still a butt head, but my Mom was delighted, kept inviting every eligible woman between the ages of 18 and 40 over for evening dinner." He rolled his eyes to emphasize the ridiculousness of it all, "the woman is completely off the rails." He followed her gaze to the countdown and was relieved that it seemed he would have some time to catch up. He reached out and gave her hand a gentle squeeze and as he looked into her eyes willed her to understand that things had changed for them if she wanted them to. Part of him wanted to just blurt out that he was barely able to think of nothing else, but being an X-Man again and seeing her the past few months, but restrained himself. The library, while seemingly abandoned, wasn't the best sort of place for that sort of declaration. He reluctantly released her hand, "I hated the job though, but I wasn't ready to come back to this," he gestured to their surroundings, indicating the X-Men and the Mansion. "I had a lot of issues to work out, so I took off with some camping gear, found a nice secluded spot up near Maine and worked most of it out." |

While Bobby nursed his arm where Kitty smacked him he admitted he went back home with his parents and got a regular job while trying to act normal while his mother invited over every woman she knew to woo her son, Although in Kitty's retort she made sure to omit that last bit of information when she asked. “You got a job? Don't tell me you were selling Frosties at the Dairy Queen.” Kitty mocked with a smile but as her attention was focused on the computer screen and the Virus Countdown her attention was pulled back to Bobby when he took her hand and gave it a small squeeze. After an awkward moment or two Bobby let go of her hand and noted that he hated the job and even after he quit he still wasn't ready to come back to the X-Men as he still had issues of his own to deal with. “So you went to Maine?” Kitty asked almost quizzically. “I've heard of people going to random places on spiritual trips to get right with themselves... But why Maine? Couldn't you go an extra couple of miles and sneak into Canada so you could at least come back with an interesting story like Wolverine.” Kitty shrugged her shoulders quickly as she spun off a tale she came with off the cuff. “I mean at least lie to me and say you got into a fight with a Grizzly Bear or better yet Sabretooth. And just when all hope was lost you threw him off a bridge and froze him in some lake where he will never be heard from again... Well at least until he inevitably uses his rapid healing factor to somehow fight out of your block of ice and surface back on land swearing revenge against the punk who tried to leave him for dead in his watery grave.” When Kitty's fantasy story ended she simply looked back at Bobby and said. “Well?” She waited for barely a moment not even enough for him to get a word in edge wise before she continued. “Was your story any better than that? Or did you go the Disney Princess route and just hung out with the birds, squirrels and other woodland creatures for a couple days?” |

His eyebrows arched high onto his forehead and he listened Kitty ramble on and on about what would constitute a proper adventure for him to have had while on his sabbatical. Once he was certain she was done he couldn't help but rest his hand gently on her shoulder, "I wish I could say something exciting happened, but probably the closest to anything exciting happening was I probably gave a few hikers and campers a scare when they happened upon me practicing with my powers." He smiled as he thought about the two different incidents, "They probably think they saw the abominable snowman." He hand tingled where it met her shoulder, a part of him wondered what it would feel like to slide it down and take her hand in his and entwine their fingers together, but he knew he needed to definitely talk about how he felt before he did anything too forward. While he'd never been overly demonstrably affectionate towards her before, now, he couldn't help himself. Still, he didn't want her think he was crazy or worse just looking for something casual, so they definitely needed to talk. He glanced around, again noticing that the countdown occupied most of her attention, "truthfully I ended up there by accident, I just loaded my camping gear in the car and started driving and decided a national forest would give me enough wide open obscurity to finish clearing my head and try to stretch my powers. His time away had been fruitful in that department, he'd practiced some of the skills he'd previously developed until they came easily and developed a few more tricks he was looking forward to unveiling if the time was right. He lowered his voice and spoke barely above a whisper, "I also spent a lot of time thinking about you." His eyes widened as he realized it had slipped out. He had planned to be all smooth and feel her out and see if he could determine where she still stood with regards to her feelings towards him, but it might be better this way, if he thought too hard about what to say he'd probably say the wrong thing. |

Kitty only smiled a half flaccid smile when Bobby revealed the truth that there was no super cool adventure in Maine only scaring some random hikers while keeping his powers sharp and honed. Shrugged and said. “Well, I guess not everyone can be as cool as Wolverine.” Bobby went on to admit that he only ended up in Main by happenstance when he loaded up his car and headed off in no particular direction. However Bobby's tone soon changed when he began to speak about why he disappeared and admitted he spent a lot of time thinking about Kitty during his sabbatical. “Oh?” Kitty mused quietly matching his tone as a small awkward silence befell them. However Kitty tried picking the tone back up to a more jovial one when she continued to go on and say. “Well who wouldn't? I mean I am kind of awesome, Right?” As she let out a brief chuckle she took another moment to look away and check back on the computer's progress. There was still about another hour or so before the scan was completed. But as Kitty pulled her gaze back off the computer and back to Bobby she asked. “What ah... What were you thinking about thou?” Kitty almost wished she didn't ask that particular question as soon as it came out of her mouth but it was too late to retract it now. Kitty didn't like tension and she felt quite a bit of tension building between the Iceman and her. If there was ever a time she had hoped Doug would casually stroll into in it would be now. Kitty had always had a lot of feelings for Bobby but the biggest emotion she felt with him was fear, Fear of messing up, fear of losing him as a friend and fear of him rejecting her. She was okay with the fact they would be life long friends and she could live with that but she couldn't live with Bobby wanting to leave because of her again. |

“What ah... What were you thinking about thou?” The old Bobby would have made some sort of wisecrack or joke to relieve the tension and back away from the moment. But the tremble he heard in her voice stopped him cold. He could see it now. Just how much her crush had cost her through the years. And to his shame he was responsible for that. His own heard thudded in his chest and his mouth was suddenly dry. He could feel gooseflesh rise on his arms and the back of his neck as his nerves worked overtime on him. It was a novel sensation, one he rarely experienced because of his immunity to cold. As he reached out, his hand trembled slightly, he gently squeezed her arm. "You are w-wonderful, you do know that, r-right?' He never felt this self-conscious talking to anyone before. Well at least not since he was a teenager. Where his hand brushed her arm he could feel warmth flowing off of her and he had to check himself from pulling back and wiping his hands on his pants, He didn't sweat. "I haven't been able to stop t-thinking about you and I realized I don't think I could," he swallowed thickly, "could think about being away from you like that again." The hammering in his chest intensified, and he could feel it in his ears, throat, and fingertips. He looked into her soft eyes and willed her to understand what he was trying to say. |

Bobby reached out again and squeezed her arm, His words were stammered as he told her she was wonderful. “Well of course I do. Everyone knows how awesome I am. I am pretty sure I even have a fan page on the internet I would pull it up to show you but, You know.” Kitty said while pointing at the still ailing computer and the on going virus scan. But it was all a defense mechanism. Bobby was nervous and that made Kitty equally if not more nervous than he was. Bobby had never acted like this before, At least not to Kitty. She had seem him love struck by others before but she had never seen him act this way in front of her. Which only complicated things right now in Kitty's world. She had traded Doug's marriage with that stuck up bitch Layla Miller for a date a date she could not renege on for the sake of their friendship. While Bobby was always her dream crush and always so close he always seemed so far away until this very moment. Bobby went on to tell Kitty that he couldn’t stop thinking about her and that he didn't think he could go with being away from her again. “Bobby...” Kitty said immediately trailing off. Of course this would happen to Kitty the worst timing possible if Bobby was about to do what she thought he was going to say next. “Well then... Don't?” Kitty said posed as more of a question than an actual statement. “I would say we'll hang out tonight and catch up so we could talk a little more freely. But...” Kitty trailed off again with an awkward pause. “But I um, I kind of already... I sort of...” The words were simple and she knew exactly what she wanted to say but now she was the one stammering to find the right thing to say. She didn't want to scare Bobby off but at the same time she knew she would need to be honest with him about her pending plans already in progress with Doug. And while she harbored no romantic feelings for Doug the rivalry between the two of them had intensified over the past few months before Bobby's disappearance. “But I am busy.” |

“Bobby...” “Well then... Don't?” “I would say we'll hang out tonight and catch up so we could talk a little more freely. But...” “But I um, I kind of already... I sort of...” “But I am busy.” With each hesitation, with each false start, cracks formed inside Bobby's chest as he realized she must know exactly what he was getting at and was trying to figure out a way to let him down easy. When she finally trailed off a gaping hole opened up where his heart had been. He opened his mouth to speak, to think of something, anything to change the direction this had turned, but then shut it when nothing came. His eyes were itchy , but he was damned if he was going to let her actually see him shed a tear. Besides, in a way this was exactly what he deserved. He'd watched Kitty flounder under the weight of her crush for years, he idly wondered if she'd ever shed tears over him. Finally he swallowed thickly and answered, "I see... I guess..." but he trailed off not sure what he wanted to say at all. Inwardly the cracks in the ice were spreading, he imagined his ice form now, looking like a cube of ice that had been dropped into a hot drink and realized that was exactly how he felt now... broken. He let go of her hand and understood that in a sense he had succeeded. One of the reasons he'd come back was to change his relationship with Kitty. Well it was changed just not the way he hoped. His respect and admiration for her rose one hundred fold. If she was able to function normally around him for all this time feeling like he did inside, then she truly was amazing. All he knew was he needed to step away, let her do her work and try to regain his equilibrium. It was going to be difficult to learn how to be around your best friend everyday and be in love with her and not be able to do a thing about it. Sighing he spoke, "I don't want to keep you from your work," his voice caught as his thoughts raced to perhaps it wasn't just work that not only did you no longer care for him that way, but that she'd finally moved on and found another, someone who didn't have to have years and an hammer upside the head to see how wonderful she was. Nervously he ran his hands down his own sides and idly wondered if the way his iceform muted physical pain would also work for emotional as well, but he didn't want to make a complete idiot of himself by snap freezing right in front of her. He knew he needed to walk away. He needed to escape, but his feet wouldn't obey his commands. It was like being at the scene of a terrible accident. You know you shouldn't watch and stare, but you can't pull you eyes away from it. |

This was when things got really awkward in the library, Bobby felt dejected and told Kitty he didn't want to keep her from her work any longer but he never made the move to actually leave almost as if he was frozen in place. “No.” Kitty said somberly. “It's not like that.. It's... well I just have something I have to do. You might not understand if I told you...” Kitty still wasn't sure if breaking the news to Bobby that her prior engagement was a date with Douglas Ramsey. “But, It's just I have to.” Kitty added shrugging her shoulders. “It's not you... and it's not me. It's just a promise I made and I can't break this promise.” Kitty continued while pulling the chair out from underneath the computer desk she was sitting on before Bobby had come into the library. She played with the chair for a moment or two sliding it in and out while contemplating how she arrived at this juncture in her life. The one thing she always wanted the goal the end game was right in front of her face. The never ending classic love saga of the all over all American girl, With a tortured soul because she has a crush that doesn't reciprocate those feelings and craves the relationship yet destroys it before she even achieves it. And the same could very well be said vice versa for Doug as well. The irony was not lost on Kitty as she pulled out the chair once again and sat down looking away from Bobby and staring back at the computer screen. “I mean, I hope you can understand.” She added as she clicked away at nothing in particular on the computer screen. “But you don't have to leave we can still talk and catch up and stuff. But...” She trailed off again and switched up her train of thought slightly. “And I am not saying that we can't um...” She wasn't sure how to put into words because both of their were still skirting around the actual meaning behind the conversation. “I am not saying that we can't discuss other things a little later after I do what I need to do?” She said almost a question instead of making a statement. |

“I mean, I hope you can understand.” Meaning, he thought, I hope you get that I got tired waiting for you to get your head our of your rear. “But you don't have to leave we can still talk and catch up and stuff. But...” But... don't try to make us something we aren't, he finished inside his head. “And I am not saying that we can't um...” We can't... he started in his head before what she almost seemed to say sunk in, Wait... what? “I am not saying that we can't discuss other things a little later after I do what I need to do?” Fortunately, her back was to him as his mouth gaped open in astonishment and a few of the cracks in his chest mended themselves. That didn't sound nearly as ominous as before, he thought. Maybe she was seeing someone and needed to give him the broom before they had a heart to heart. Part of him worried he was just trying to read more into what she was saying and not saying in an effort to keep hope alive, but he simply didn't care. This was Kitty and while she probably deserved better than him he was certain he couldn't find better than her and she was worth waiting a bit for. That said, he wasn't sure he could be near here right now without blurting out his feelings or doing something impulsive like trying to kiss her. Instead he concentrated and formed a rose out of ice and placed it on the desk in front of her. "I'll look forward to it." As he withdrew he let the tips of his fingers trail across the back of her hand. "I'll see you later tonight, yeah?" He was ready to go, but wanted her confirmation they'd have that talk sooner rather than later. |

Bobby was quite too quite, silent even and Kitty fought everything she had in her to not turn around and look back at him to see what he was doing exactly. She knew he was still standing there she felt him hovering over the back of her shoulder and she would have heard him turn around to leave which she didn't but he wasn’t saying anything and the silence more more nerve racking than anything that had happened prior. Suddenly a icely formed Rose was put on the computer desk she was sitting at with the following words 'I'll look forward to it'. Bobby's fingers crawled across the back of Kitty's hand on his way to retreat. Which caused her to erratically click at something on the screen nothing she wanted to open but it was a mere reflex. He wanted to leave and the gesture more than confirmed that and Kitty wasn't going to try and stop him again she needed some time to think and probably so did he. His final words came as 'I'll see you later tonight' with a questioning 'yeah?' put at the tail end of it to which Kitty again instinctively said. “Yeah.” not thinking much about it, Until after she said it would Bobby be waiting up all night to see who and when Kitty came back to the mansion with? Well he would find out sooner or later anyway she was surprised Doug hadn't already rubbed it in his face that he had a date with Kitty tonight. But knowing Doug his excitement was probably outweighing his pride to go around boasting about the impending first date. He was probably trying to micromanage and make sure everything was perfect for the date. Which in a way was a blessing because if Doug were to confront Bobby about it, It could have made things a whole lot more complicated. But that battle was saved for another day and all Kitty had to do was get through the rest of this one first. |

“Yeah.” Taking that as a dismissal, he promptly turned on the spot and with a bit of a spring in his step, Bobby crept out of the library. While he'd have loved to be able to hammer things out with Kitty immediately for fear that it might be another week before he could track her down again he was more than willing to give her the space she needed to take care of whatever thing it was she needed to take care of. As he walked, he idly wondered at whatever it could be. He strongly suspected she must be seeing someone or something like that and wanted to end that so both of them could sit down and talk things through while they both were unattached. That would be the best thing of course as he really didn't like the idea of having a potential relationship with Kitty limited to sneaking around until she managed to disentangle herself from the situation. He frowned though as something jumped into his head. He was certain Doug would definitely not be a fan of Kitty and he changing the status of their relationship. In fact Bobby was quite sure Doug was one of the people not sorry to see him leave. Fortunately, so far, the two hadn't really crossed paths since his return and Bobby was hoping to have things worked out and have an understanding with Kitty before he had to endure the hateful looks and glares. That would definitely be a good thing. Bobby exited the library and began whistling a jaunty tune as things were definitely looking up. |
