Timeframe: May 16th, @ 3 pm Location: Surfside, Florida Well. As far as Rahne Russell was concerned, there were worse places to receive a Cerebro distress signal from than Surfside, Florida. A small, quaint little beachside suburb, it was hard to imagine any kind of particularly dangerous goings on here. Cute, small houses all in a row, manicured lawns with all of the decorations that were more or less required for a beach town, the crisp, salty scent in the air wafting in off of a cool, clean ocean. Times like this, Rahne was glad her X-Men uniform fit underneath a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. The trip was quick, thanks to X-Men aviation technologies, and the team small. A duo, even. Rahne herself was there to utilize her canine-keen senses to try and pin down anything out of the ordinary that might be the mutant signal they were seeking, while Bobby Drake, aka the Iceaman, was here to provide raw power and skill in case things were a bit more dangerous than the scan suggested they would be. "Ye know," Rahne said to Bobby as they stood on the main street of the town, where zoning allowed for shops and boutiques. "I'm thinkin' more missions ought t' take us to the beach. I could surely get used t' this." She adjusted the large sun hat on her head, making sure her fair skin was shaded. She could get used to it, but her skin would likely suffer some burns for it if she wasn't careful. Oh, the curse of being a fair-skinned redhead. She glanced down at the device strapped to her wrist. At a quick glance, it would just resemble a large green wristwatch, but closer inspection would reveal a good deal more. No time was on display, no date, no barometric pressure or anything of the sort. Its face was divided into ring quadrants, and divided again into four 90 degree pie wedges. Portable Cerebro's detection screen. "Our mutant should be somewhere nearby, but I'm certainly nae pickin' up any scents out o' the ordinary here. 'Cept for some amazing fresh-baked sourdough bread from that bakery that I think I'll have t' buy a loaf from when this is all done." |

When the message had come down that Bobby was going on a search and rescue mission he jumped at the chance. He'd been at the mansion for three days and was feeling restless. He did pause just slightly when he realized he was being paired with Rahne. A part of him would never forgive or forget what he'd done to her while under the influence of Kick, but he quickly recovered and gave her a friendly embrace. She'd been one of his friends who'd been there for him at his worst and he wouldn't forget that either. The target was in Florida, so Bobby forwent his normal full costume with a duster and opted for a pair of board shorts and a rather loud Hawaiian shirt. For once he could justify dressing like a beach bum while on a mission. Besides if things were got fierce it wasn't like he needed to depend on the protection his uniform would give. So far the search had been fruitless. The mobile Cerbro Rahne was carrying hadn't picked up their mutant and so far her nose hadn't placed anything out of the ordinary as well. He felt pretty relaxed since if the mission went like normal his presence was supercilious. Rahne would find and make contact with the mutant. He was merely here to put the target or anyone harassing the target on ice if it was warranted. Instead he was focusing on the sites and was considering making another trip here in the future, perhaps with Kitty and some of the others for an afternoon. His reverie was broken when Rahne updated him. "Our mutant should be somewhere nearby, but I'm certainly nae pickin' up any scents out o' the ordinary here. 'Cept for some amazing fresh-baked sourdough bread from that bakery that I think I'll have t' buy a loaf from when this is all done." His stomach chose that moment to rumble and remind him that the early lunch he scarfed down before they left was no longer with him. He glared at his stomach's betrayal as he rubbed it, "Maybe we get a sandwich before we leave with it?" He could envision it now, a foot-long sub on fresh-baked Cuban bread, piled high with ham, turkey, bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. "Yeah, definitely could go for a sandwich? Maybe we ought to check the bakery? Maybe our target is hungry too?" |

"An' I thought I had an appetite," Rahne said with a small smirk as Bobby had more specific meal plans. Any hesitance he had in working with her, Rahne hadn't noticed and didn't share. Once upon a time, perhaps. Definitely several years ago. But that was the past. And the Bobby Drake who had nearly killed her in a drug-induced rage was not the one who stood before her now, was not the one who had proved time and time again that the habit was dropped and he had become all the better for it. She could trust him like she could trust any other X-Man. "'Tis certainly possible," Rahne said with a frown, surveying the area. "What I dinnae get is the distress signal. Usually, when Cerebro detects a distress signal, 'tis fairly obvious when we come and investigate. Illusory monsters attackin' civilians, a lynch mob forming on some poor soul, something. Anything. Anything that would suggest there's anythin' happening here that's more serious than a spontaneous game o' beach volleyball." She sighed, and shook her head. Maybe nothing was going on. A false alarm. But since when did they get false alarms on Cerebro? She couldn't help having the feeling that something more was going on here than they could see. And that left her feeling very uneasy. She hated to say it, but between the two of them, they weren't covering much ground. "We may need t' split up," she sighed. Splitting up was always bad, but what other option did they have? Even if they couldn't see it, one low-level new mutant was very likely in need of their assistance. Rahne looked around, taking in the sites around them. Ice cream parlor. Pet shop. Antiques store. Gift shop. Family pharmacy. Nothing stood out. *** Elsewhere, a tall, slender woman with long, curly red hair looked to the man standing next to her. "I can't be sure, but I think the X-Men might be here." "You think?" He answered, annoyed. "Well, they're not wearing costumes, and I look through Beverly's eyes and I don't see either of them wearing a gold visor or with wings on his back or what." "Either? What, you mean-" "Yeah, there's only two." "And you're not sure they're X-Men." "No." "Then we wait, and we watch them. The moment they reveal themselves, we strike. Make sure Beverly's ready too. It wasn't easy planting her in the window like that." "Well, she's neither a puppy nor a kitten, so..." "I know! Just keep watching." |

"We may need t' split up," she sighed. That in Bobby's opinion wasn't a good option. There was a reason the two were paired for the mission. Rahne had experience in first contact and a way with talking to what most likely would be an adolescent scared out of his or her mind. Bobby was simply there to help subdue or protect the kid as needed. He shook his head, "Not yet, if we don't find someone, perhaps we can call back and get Jean or Emma to verify from home. It's possible, whoever it is was mobile and is no longer here." Concentrating, he dropped his body temperature a few degrees, not enough to be noticeable to anyone unless they touched him. It was possibly the nicest benefit of his power, he never felt cold, and could almost always cool himself off when it was hot. The humid air, beckoned to him, the water saturated the air literally begging him to manipulate and freeze it. The desire was always there, in the back of his mind, but not one that ever could overcome his control. Otherwise, he could easily imagine Westchester stuck in perpetual winter. "How about we go ahead and swing into that bakery and have our lunch. You keep your ears open and eavesdrop and see if any of the locals are talking about anything strange going on?" It was definitely a move forward and it achieved one goal of filling his stomach while at the same time had the potential of getting a lead on their target. |

Rahne chuckled, shaking her head. It wasn't going great so far. And maybe they just weren't looking hard enough yet, but Rahne hardly knew what to make of this innocuous situation. Here they were, in a town where no imminent danger seemed to be taking place. Despite Cerebro's warning that a new mutant was in need of rescue, there was no apparent need, no apparent rescue. Just peace and tranquility. Nothing about any of this felt right, except for the temperature and the sun and the sound of the ocean softly crashing upon the beach nearby. "Aye, maybe we should," she relented. It would be a start, at least. "We're surely nae findin' any mutants out here." *** "Okay. It's got to be them," the woman said, looking to her male companion. "How can you tell?" "The woman - couldn't make out most of what she just said, but she definitely said the word 'mutant'. They're searching." "Good. It is time to strike." *** Rahne was about to follow Bobby into the bakery when a bright, momentary flash of light burst into existence in front of her, causing her to stumble backwards, fall on her backside. She blinked her eyes rapidly. Her vision was impaired momentarily, but it was starting to come back. Four humanoid shapes stood in front of her, looking down upon her. "And so the X-Men have come to sunny Florida. Just as we planned," the man of the group said, dressed in a garish orange and purple costume with a long, flowing orange cloak that he clutched in each hand. The face-covering mask he wore resembled that of a snake. On either side of him stood two women - one, a slender woman of average height with curly shocks of red hair falling over her shoulders and a two-toned green body suit. The other, uncommonly tall and even more uncommonly muscular, with blonde hair and odd protrusions on either side of her face. Behind them, and slightly off to the left, stood a young teenage boy in a purple and yellow costume, looking none too pleased to be there, standing with his arms crossed and glaring at the man instea of Bobby and Rahne. "God, dad, you sound so lame," the teenager said with a roll of his eyes. "Silence, Rattler!" the man snarled. "What the hell is this?" Rahne asked, getting back up to her feet. "Our boss noticed that you X-Men come running whenever mutants are in trouble, young mutants, and it really wasn't hard to manufacture trouble for Rattler here," the redhead spoke. "Isn't that right, Anaconda?" The large blonde only responded with a sharp, curt nod. "And now that your team has arrived, we, the Serpent Society, will make our names in your broken bodies! The world will know us after we've defeated the mighty X-Men! Rattler! Attack!" "I told you, I wanna be Sonic Boom! Snake names are so lame!" the teen said, stepping forward and pushing his hands towards Bobby and Rahne, sending a low, loud, rumbling blast of sonic force at them that shook the windows of the store fronts around them. Wolfsbane reeled back, her ears particularly sensitive to sonic assault. She was lucky she hadn't transformed yet, as in her wolf form, the blast would have been too much to handle. |

A light flashed and Bobby stumbled backward, cartwheeling and finally tumbling over into a roll. He turned to to take in what was possibly one of the stranger sites he'd seen in all of his years with the X-Men, and that was saying something. He rolled his eyes at the pompous pronouncement that sounded like it came verbatim off of the Saturday morning cartoons. When the apparently leader in the snake costume began to wind down he shifted into his ice form. It turned out to be the right instinct as the one called Rattler stepped forward and launched a shock wave at them. The initial force hurt, there was nothing else for it as cracks formed in his chest. Staggering back he used ambient moisture from the surroundings to seal up the cracks. He shook his head twice to clear it. Unfortunately, that allowed the rather statuesque blond a chance to close with him. "This is definitely going to hurt," he muttered as he focused on adding as much ice to his frame as possible. The punch felt like taking one on the chin in his human form from Wolverine during one of his hand to hand training sessions. His head whipped back and he was sure a piece of his chin went sailing away. He instantly sealed the wound and focused on lowering his temperature even more, adding more mass, and more bulk to his frame. Normally, he was perfectly content to slide around and pepper their foes from a distance. However, usually he was with a team that had Piotr, Hank, or Wolverine to get up close and personal with anyone like this Anaconda the leader had addressed her as. The next few blows were deflected, although he couldn't return them. Her arms were stretched out like spaghetti noodles, whipping at him with the force of sledge hammers. "Wow, I need to ask Mr. Fantastic if he has any secret love children with a snake the next time I talk to him." Focusing, he enclosed her feet and arms in blocks of ice, "Say, if I put you on ice, do you hibernate?" |

Snakes. The young woman sometimes called Wolfsbane had seen many outlandish villains in her time with the X-Men - she had seen a being of pure psychic energy, clad in purple and red, who threatened two realities from within the astral plane. She had seen green-skinned aliens who could alter their appearances to blend into the populace they planned to conquer. She had even seen a cigar-smoking clown villain with a particularly obnoxious manner about him (or she thought she did - she may have just dreamed that one night). But a team of villains garishly dressed as snakes? This was new. "We're the Serpent Society, boy!" The caped one snarled. "The snake names are important - now, Rattler - hit her again while she's off-balance!" But Wolfsbane wasn't off-balance, not anymore, at least. Her speedy reflexes allowed her to recover quickly, and in that quick recovery, she had lunged towards the boy, her mutation kicking in as she did, reddish fur spreading across her skin as her form shifted, changed, altered into what was quite possibly her true form. The boy called Rattler's eyes went wide with terror as the wolf-woman lunged for him, and on reflex, his hands pulled back to cover his eyes rather than blast his sonic bursts at the woman attacking him. She tackled him hard, bringing him down to the pavement. "Oh, God, oh God, don't eat me, please, don't eat me don't eat me..." The boy whimpered. In that moment, right there, she felt bad for the kid. He was too young for this, too untrained, too unprepared. Father of the year, this goofball in the cape was. "Stand down an' I won't," she snarled. She and Bobby would have to have a talk with this young man when this was all said and done. As the boy nodded his head, swallowing a lump in his throat, Wolfsbane brought her gaze up to his super villain of a father. "Brave man, siccin' yuir teenage son on us," she growled before standing up. "Brave, perhaps not, but bravery never got me what I wanted," the man sneered, and in that moment, Wolfsbane lunged for him, moving faster than most people were capable of reacting to. But it only took that moment, for when she would have made contact, her mark was gone, vanished into thin air. "You won't catch the Sidewinder so easily!" He crowed, clutching his cape as he stood in self-satisfied "triumph". "Princess Python, if you would please." "Gladly," the woman, the redhead, said with a sideways smirk. She now had a ridiculously large snake draped across her shoulders - Wolfsbane could tell it was the same one that was moments ago in the pet shop window. Teleporter must have grabbed it in the same moment he evaded her attack. "Have you ever fought a reticulated python before, monster? You will now," as the woman snapped her fingers, the snake darted forward at astonishing speed, zooming straight at Wolfsbane. |

"This is getting monotonous," Bobby announced. The woman who called herself Anaconda and he had settled into a routine of her swinging her garishly flexible and strong limbs and he was placing obstacle after obstacle in her way for her to smash through. Changing tactics he focused on the ground beneath her feet, instantly causing a slick of ice to form. Immediately she overbalanced on her next swing and fell spinning on the ice. He followed it up with several blasts of ice, pinning her arms and legs to the ground. "There, that ought to cool you off," he then took in his surroundings to see the kid that had hit them initially curled on the ground, meanwhile a rather large python was slithering towards Rahne. He was certain Rahne would have no problem dealing with the snake, but not likely without injuring it. Bobby focused and cooled the air around the snake and watched in satisfaction as it slowed before coming to a stop, falling into a cold-induced sleep. That should take it out of action for the next little bit until the hot sun woke it back up. The sound of cracking ice caused him to turn as his previous foe broke free of her icy manacles. "I thought I told you to chill," he quipped. Before he could follow up his word with deed one of her limbs swept his feet out from under dumping him unceremoniously on his back. "Shut up, you imbecile!" Unfortunately for her, she was still on the patch of ice he froze earlier and was struggling to get to her feet. Bobby on the other hand was immediately on his feet, "Awww, c'mon, tell me how you really feel." He focused on spreading the ice on the ground wider and skated on it towards her. Just as she got to her feet he swept them out from under her again.. "Shall we dance?" |

Wolfsbane was ready to dodge, to counter-strike when the massive Python lunged for her, but it became very obvious very soon that wouldn't be necessary as the creature's speed slowed drastically before coming to a complete, unconscious stop, lying inert on the pavement. The woman, Princess Python (was that really the best name she could come up with?) screamed, clutching her hands to her head. Wolfsbane couldn't be sure, but she seemed to be in pain. Was there a psychic link to the snake? "What did you do?! My baby - what did you do to my Beverly?" She bellowed, her face going red with anger. "He's Iceman, an' you attacked with a cold-blooded reptile. Do the math," Wolfsbane smirked, before darting forward and swinging a sharp, swift chop of her right hand to the Princess's temple, causing the woman to crumple to the pavement beside her pet/baby/whatever. "Damn it all! You two are making a mockery of my plan!" Sidewinder snarled, fists clenched. "Yuir plan to lure the X-Men here an' defeat us in fisticuffs? Gotta admit, 'twas a bad plan," Wolfsbane was feeling confident, smart and self-assured as she ran towards the leader of this little gang. As predicted, he teleported out of the way, again clutching onto his cape. She wondered - was he powered at all? Were any of them aside from the boy? There were ways to replicate super powers through technology - was that what these people were doing? She hadn't predicted, however, the sharp bang of a pistol being fired, the sting of a bullet clipping her right thigh, a painful glancing wound. Of course, the caped madman had a gun. She snarled in pain, and then leveled furious, piercing golden eyes on him. "Ye're a terrible shot," she growled, hands tensed and ready to strike. "I can afford to be," he said, before grabbing his cape with his free hand and vanishing again. Wolfsbane attuned superhuman ears and listened. Teleporting was never silent. It made a sound, of space being warped, a pop of a sudden vacuum and air rushing in to fill it. And then an explosion at re-entry - if you knew how to listen for it. Wolfsbane jumped into action, vaulting high and landing on Anaconda's shoulders to keep her down on that ice patch. "Iceman - on yuir ten o' clock - take out the cape!" |

Wolfsbane jumped into action, vaulting high and landing on Anaconda's shoulders to keep her down on that ice patch. "Iceman - on yuir ten o' clock - take out the cape!" Bobby whirled and sent two separate streams of ice, the first coating the ground where his intended target would land and the second to try to catch the cape he was wearing. BLAM!!!!! Something slammed into his chest at the same time his target managed to fall into a split on the ice patch and yowl in pain. He started down, blinking, not comprehending at first what he was staring at. The center of his chest showed a hole with cracks radiating out from it in a circle. Oh no! It was one thing to patch up holes in himself with ambient ice, but it wouldn't do him any good to do that with a bullet stuck in his chest. Fortunately, it didn't hurt near as much as he suspected it would if he weren't living ice. Almost as an afterthought he concentrated and sealed the shooter's gun in a block of ice where he dropped it upon falling and followed it up by freezing his cape solid. He then turned to Rahne, "Could you tell me if it went all the way through or not?" If it had he could just fill in the holes with more ice and all would be well, otherwise he'd be traveling back to the mansion as a cracked ice cube until Hank or someone could extract the bullet from his chest. The dull pain he was feeling however, led him to think the bullet either made it all the way through or was just beneath the surface in his right shoulder. Suddenly he wasn't very hungry anymore. |

"Urk-" Sidewinder grunted as Iceman caught him in an icy blast immediately upon apparition, but not before getting off a wild shot himself that sunk into the Iceman's shoulder with a sharp "crack". Wolfsbane wasted no time, leaping off of Anaconda none too gently and grabbing on to the flash-frozen cape with both clawed hands and yanking hard, at first jerking him backwards by the collarbone and then tearing/breaking the cape off of his back. In the motion, he dropped his gun, the weapon clattering to the ice-slicked pavement and sliding away from him, out of reach. "An' now, ye're nae goin' anywhere, are ye?" she growled, wadding the cape up into a ball but holding onto it still. "Every time ye did yuir wee little warp thingie, ye grabbed onto this. I'm guessing this is where the tech t' do that trick is, aye?" "Damn you, you-" Sidewinder coughed, pulling at his legs to try and free himself from the ice. "I'll take that as a 'yes'," she sighed, before looking over to Iceman. "These lot aren't terribly good at this, are they?" She stepped over to him, carefully examining his shoulder. "I see it," she said. "Nae too terribly deep in, I could dig it out if ye'd like." That was when the teenaged member of the Squad stood up, legs shaking possibly from the amount of ice all around, but most likely from nervousness and fear. "If ye're plannin' on lettin' loose another one o' those sound bursts, I'd advise against it. Gunshots make us cranky," Wolfsbane advised without even looking back to him. "I... I didn't want to be a super-criminal," he said meekly. "I didn't even wanna dress like a snake." "Rattler..." Sidewinder spoke in a warning tone. "Jake, dad! God! My name is Jake! And you're so lame!" The boy sighed in exasperation. "You went to Craig's List to make your stupid team, for God's sake!" "All because ye're a mutant an' he thought he'd capitalize on it?" Wolfsbane asked. "Not even! Because he commissioned a teleporting cape thing from some crazy inventor dude or something! Thought being a super villain would be more exciting than being an accountant!" Wolfsbane looked to the would-be villainous mastermind, who hung his head in shame. "I know a thing 'r two about rotten dads," Wolfsbane said. "Best thing t' do is get away from 'em. We can bring ye to our school, teach ye about yuir powers if ye'd like." |

Bobby relaxed once Rahne finally disarmed the leader of the group. Still he waited to de-ice. It wouldn't do any good to revert to flesh and blood with a gunshot wound. "I see it," she said. "Nae too terribly deep in, I could dig it out if ye'd like." He nodded his head. "Yeah, if you can dig it out I can fill the hole in with more ice then I'll be good as new." Well that wasn't 100% true. He'd likely be sore for a few days, but it was loads better than the alternatives. He took the backseat to Rahne in dealing with the boy. This was definitely more her forte. While she discussed the potential of bringing, Jake, back to the school, he circulated and reinforced the ice pinning them in place, especially Anaconda. The other two seemed to be more or less baseline human, but this one was either a mutant or had been augmented in some way. That caused him to wonder idly if there was some sort of black market plastic surgeon for villains who did this stuff for the right price. He smiled at the thought of a surgeon going over the various choices for weaponry, enhanced strength, and the like right beside options for a tummy tuck, face lift, or breast augmentation. After making his circuit he returned to listen to Rahne make her pitch about Xavier's. "She's right, you know, if you came with us you'd just be another student and be able to fit right in." He then waited, with his arms crossed, inwardly hoping the kid would choose to come with them and soon so they could leave the wide open street and get home. |

"Alright, hold still," Rahne said, holding onto his shoulder with one hand and readying the claw on her index finger with the other. She took a deep breath, steadying herself. This part always sucked, and she was glad she didn't have to do it often. She felt lucky that the wound she suffered didn't imbed into her, left her with only a flesh wound that her accelerated healing could easily handle. She'd be fine in a day or two, that was for sure. "This is gonna hurt. Sorry in advance," she took another deep breath, and slipped her finger into he bullet hole, carving with her claw a bit of the cracked ice away to get the bullet out. The boy clearly didn't want to watch that, and quickly turned his head away. "I don't know," he said, shrugging his shoulders. "I never liked school." "Ye may nae get a choice," Rahne said, her voice slightly strained as she carefully, yet forcefully, found purchase with the bullet and began digging it out. "What? But you said-" "Coerced or not, ye put on a costume an' used superhuman powers to attack people in broad daylight. 'Twas a bad plan, an' now yuir dad an' his friends are gonna get arrested when SHIELD shows up, which they will. An' since ye're what? Sixteen?" Rahne finally got it out, holding the bullet between her index claw and thumb to examine it. "Fifteen," Jake answered. "Right, fifteen. They'll likely send ye to the school, but with a null cuff and under house arrest. Yuir choice, really." "I don't wanna get arrested,"he said meekly. "Then come along and we'll get ye registered for classes," she said, before looking to Bobby. "How's it feel? Nae too terrible, aye?" |

It actually stung a bit as Rahne chiseled the bullet out of his shoulder. However, once it was removed it was simple matter of filling the hole and sealing the cracks. The ache reduced almost to nothing, although it would be tender for a few days when not in his ice form. He decided to put of the transformation for now though. The longer he stayed iced up the more the wound would heal. Pacing around he examined the other three assailants and listened to the boy, Jake, learn the unfortunate facts of life. He chimed in, "It isn't really like any school you've been to before. We can custom tailor your education to you. You might even find yourself liking school in the end." The boy gently shook his head in denial, but he didn't seem nearly as intent on refusing as before. Bobby finished his circuit, convinced the other three were restrained or unconscious. "Shoot, we might even let you choose your own code name." And they probably would too, unless he tried to poach a codename belonging to someone else. He leaned in towards Rahne, "How long do you figure until S.H.I.E.L.D. shows up? And should we still be here then?" |

Wolf Form

Wolfsbane's ears twitched as the sound of police sirens sounded out. Local authorities on their way, better late than on time as far as she was concerned. Local constables, they weren't prepared for stuff like this. Teleporting madmen and snake controllers and super strong stretchy arm people? No, they would have been wrecked. Casualties on hers and Iceman's heads if they couldn't save them. They were lucky that tourists and residents stayed clear, only now beginning to poke their heads out of store fronts and behind automobiles. "Muh guess is twenty minutes 'r so. I say we stay put 'till they arrive, just t' make sure the Clown Crew does nae-" "Serpent Society!" The incapacitated Sidewinder snarled, before Rahne shot a glare at him, tight-jawed and wide-eyed. "T' make sure the Silly Snake Squad does nae get into any new trouble 'fore they're carted away," she finished her sentence. "First time I've ever come up against a crew of wannabe super-villains this dedicated to it, though." "You're sure they won't arrest me?" Jake asked, nervous at the sound of sirens. "Honestly? No, I'm not," Wolfsbane responded. "Best we can do is vouch for ye. Ye were coerced into this by yuir da here, an' that's a good reason t' let ye off the hook so to speak, especially if we promise t' take ye to the Institute where he cannae get ye back into trouble." "Thanks, I guess," he moped, kicking his boot into the pavement with a sharp scuff. "I ever tell ye how good it is t' have ye back in action?" Wolfsbane asked, looking back to Iceman with a smirk. "'Tis always a bit strange when people take leave of absences, so I'm glad ye're back." |
