______________________________

There was an outdoor obstacle course set up just near the edge of Breakstone Lake. It was mostly comprised of the usual things you'd find in any training course: hurdles, parallel bars, a big-ass net and the like. The point of interest today was a wooden striking dummy on the end of the field. They were typically used for target and combo practice. The damn things had been detroyed and re-made more times than could be counted, and that was just in the little time former thief and resident janitor Derek Addams had been at the school. He wore a sleeveless sports t-shirt and a pair of shorts, revealing an array of bruises on the exposed parts of his arms and legs. A particularly large one reached out from the neck of his shirt and onto the side of his face and neck. Even he wasn't sure how that one got there.

He'd gone there with a purpose. An experiment, of sorts. He hadn't been completely idle in his time away from the X-Men, at least as far as his training went. The revelation that the "bruises" he'd been sporting since day one of his mutation were actually something he could use had become something of an obsession once he'd finally pinned down the mechanics of "channelling" the stored energy they represented. He tapped lightly on the wooden dummy with the back of his fist before rolling his shoulders and neck a bit.

"Theoretically, ye should be capable of pushin'this energy out through yuir pores, since it seems t'rest just under the epidermis."

Dr. McTaggert's voice rang in his head, complete with thick Scottish accent as he remembered that day at her office. Well, she was right about that. True enough, before he left, he managed to pull off a "power punch" as he called it. It completely pulverized the bag he'd tried it on, and it completely knocked him on his ass. One of the goals of this practice session he'd made was to find out if maybe, with repeated use, the strange weakness and vertigo that came with expelling all that energy would lessen.

And so, here he was. He extended his hand to the dummy before making a fist and punching it. Any martial arts aficionado or Bruce Lee fan could tell what he was attempting to mimic. The "One-Inch Punch". It was a move that looked impressive, but even it's creator had said that it was just for show and not very practical in an actual fight. But that wasn't why Derek was trying to achieve with this experiment.

He needed to know just how much distance he needed in order to pull of his own super-punch. One inch, or rather, two to three, was as good a place to start as any. He tried to remember the way he'd seen it done. The turn of the hips, the follow through on the shoulder.

*THWACK*THWACK*THWACK*

After a few practice punches, he took a deep breath, his face hardening with resolve as he clenched his fist one more time and began to focus. All right... time for the real thing... Already, he could sense them, like blips on a radar, the points of kinetic energy across his body began to tingle and throb slightly. It was a signal, he'd learned. His body's way of letting him know when his stores were all connected by the focal point he'd decided on. And then, of course, there was the visual cue of the protruding veins spider webbing their way out from his arm and across his skin, providing the network through which the energy could travel. It took quite a bit of concentration on his part to maintain it while also preparing for the blow, but once he managed to connect the dots, so to speak, there was a slight surge of adrenaline that told him: Now.

He focused silently, waiting for that moment.

The obstacle course was certainly noteworthy, and it naturally drew the attention of Ethan as he was exploring the school grounds. He had unpacked the majority of his belongings into his new room, which was the only real matter he had to attend to that day. So now he was exploring; simply taking note of his new surroundings. He was trying to familiarize himself with his new home as well as trying to adapt to the reality of coming to the school in the first place, which wasn't an easy task. The institute was massive and certainly odd in its own right, but it was by no means a place he didn't want to be. After all, Mr. Summers had already helped him to calm himself by introducing him to a few students and helping him settle in. And now he was still exploring, and the obstacle course next to the lake was still keeping his attention.

The young man could make the connection that he'd more than likely run this course a few times during his time at the institute, which gave him something to look forward too. He wasn't a stranger to running and climbing, even if he wasn't built like a jock. Although he hadn't been as active in those fields in previous years, this would be a nice challenge for him to get back on track. At least there are a few things I'm familiar with here, he thought.

Continuing down the field, he turned his attention to the bruised figure in front of the training dummy. The sight of this man immediately sparked his imagination to think, Are they going to shoot stuff at us when we run the course? How else would this guy have gotten all those blemishes all over his skin? Then again, this was the only guy who had those kinds of bruises, so it was less than likely that they would make the course harder than they needed to. No, that'd just be ridiculous.

Ethan certainly recognized the mans attempted "One Inch Punch" as he moved closer to the end of the field; Emily had shown him that thing countless times as a child, trying to figure out how to do it. It didn't really have any real world merit in fighting, but this guy was certainly persistent. But after three hits the man stopped, and he simply stood there, preparing for another hit that never came. It seemed like he was waiting for just the right moment, when the wood was the weakest from the position of the sun or something like that. All he really needed was bad lip dubbing and this would be a training sequence in "Some Bad Kung-Fu Movie", starring him.

But he was still doing nothing. And despite this, Ethan continued to wait for whatever came next.

Someone's here...

One thing Derek never needed something like enhanced hearing or telepathy for was the feeling he got when he was being watched. It was something he'd honed long ago while living on the streets. If you got into a fight or were about to break into somewhere, it helped to know if someone was flanking you, or if there were possible witnesses nearby. But, he didn't let it break his concentration. He'd worry who it was in a minute. So long as they stayed clear of the dummy they should be safe. A familiar rush and thump in his chest told him he was about to give them something worth watching.

It was fast. The distance plus the punch itself saw to it that a simple blink would mean missing the action. But this time, as Derek jerked forward into the motion, he let out a shout. "CHAKA KHAN!!!

*THUUUUUUUUM!!!!

It sounded like an old Civil War cannon had gone off, burying all but the first syllable of Derek's voice as the dummy shattered in half, sending the top, along with a flurry of splinters in a cloud away from him. The accompanying gust of wind blew through his hair as he smirked, the veins across his body returning to normal along with his skin becoming clear, with the energy expelled. But then it came. A tingling, rubbery sensation like when you fall asleep on your arm, but across his entire body. He staggered slightly, trying to at least keep enough balance to not collapse like a piece of boiled spaghetti. Nope...

Down in a heap he went, rolling onto his back as he took deep breaths, bringing a hand to his forehead. Nothing he could do but ride it out. Thankfully, it didn't take long, he was already able to sit back up, but decided against trying to stand just yet. His task accomplished, for the most part, he turned to see who'd been watching. It was a kid. Must've been a new one because he didn't recall seeing him before he left. He grinned, betting that the kid was a fairly new arrival as he looked at him through his fingers.

"Welcome to Mutant High."

In the splitting tension, or lack thereof, of waiting for the man to hit the dummy again, Ethan had began to think it wasn't going to happen. Maybe the mans mutation let him harden his skin and he had just made himself into the worlds first living statue by mistake. Ethan was just about to move on and leave the man to his activity before he let out his shout, startling the young mutant.

"CHAKA KAHN!!!" With this one liner keeping with the theme of the bad kung-fu movie, Ethan could only think: Is that a reference to something?

Not even blinking, Ethan jerked back in surprise and shock once the mans fist made contact with the dummy. It was earsplitting; the sound that emanated from the impact must have been heard throughout the entire school. Instinctively, he covered one ear with his hand and protected his face with his other arm, covering his other ear with his shoulder. In addition to the sound, the young mutant also had to protect himself from the dust that the shock wave would kick up. Ethan didn't think that gusts could come from impacts, but clearly he was wrong. Could this kind of training really be allowed here? How would anyone get any peace and quiet? This guys training basically advertised itself by saying, "Hey, I'm punching stuff over here! Come on to the war zone and join the fun!"

Once he was sure that there wasn't going to be another spontaneous eruption of sound to rupture his eardrums, Ethan looked up. His eyes were slightly widened from shock, and his heart was pounding. He peeked out from behind his arms, slowly lowering them once he was sure that Rocky wouldn't be going for a follow-up punch at his no-longer-existing opponent. After all, it was fairly obvious that he wouldn't once he had fallen down. And despite the obliteration of the training dummy, Ethan was perplexed - weren't bruises supposed to come from combat, not be removed by it? He didn't quite understand it, but this guy was certainly something else entirely. And then he turned to him.

"Welcome to Mutant High."

Ethan looked at him in a state of shock. He looked at the man, down toward himself, and then back at the man once more.

"Is it that obvious?" He called exasperatedly, laughing slightly to himself.

It could be pretty obvious, Ethan supposed. He wasn't wearing the school uniform. Although, it was summer. But then again, maybe the uniform was a year-round thing. But it was quite possible that the telltale sign that he was new to The Institute was just him standing there, slack jaw staring. Well, he wasn't sure if he was that visibly shocked, but the young man certainly wasn't used to anything like this. And even if the teachers were, he wouldn't be surprised if they came outside to investigate what sounded like a small explosion so they could make sure nobody was dead.

Derek grunted a bit as he pulled himself to his feet and rolled his shoulders again, sideways glancing and smirking at the kid's reaction. Definitely a new kid... not sure HOW new yet...

"Is it that obvious?" the kid asked.

"A bit." Derek smiled as he made his way to his audience. "You look more shocked than anything. Any regular here would be more curious than stunned." He thumbed at the remnants of the dummy behind him. "And a lot of 'em can do a better job at pulverizing that wooden man."

He folded his arms across his chest as he looked the kid over, his eyes slightly narrowing. So what's this one capable of, I wonder...? He didn't look like he could be older than 18, but then again, neither did Derek. He'd stopped physically aging years ago, for the most part. Which brought up his next line of questioning.

"So, you still a student? How many high school years ya got left? No, wait... sorry." He shook his head a bit before extending his right hand to the kid, realizing he'd forgotten his manners. "My name's Derek. Derek Addams, but most people call me Bruiser. And most of them would also call me the Village Idiot, but it'd break their hearts if I wasn't here. Well, ya know, aside from the fact somebody else'd hafta do maintenance."

One of the best ways of breaking the ice, in Derek's opinion, was to let whoever you were introducing yourself to admit that you were flawed. Don't put on an air of superiority regardless of your skill and circumstance. Treat everyone equally.

"You likin' the place so far? If ya got any questions, just ask." He said with a smile.

"A bit," the man called.

He couldn't have been much older than Ethan, but looks could be very deceiving in this place. For all he knew the bruises revitalized his youth or something like that. But the guy seemed normal enough as he greeted the new arrival.

"You look more shocked than anything. Any regular here would be more curious than stunned. And a lot of 'em can do a better job at pulverizing that wooden man."

That statement just didn't seem to click. That dummy was gone. Entirely. It had never existed as far as anyone who just walked by was concerned. But this guy just said that most of the students here could do a better job at obliterating what used to be the training dummy. Just how powerful are the kids here? Am I going to learn to do stuff like that?

And as "The Human Cannon" continued to ask questions, Ethan found it necessary to wait for him to stop before responding. Sure, this guy was terrifying in power, but manners were still manners. Ethan took note of each question that he had and simply waited for him to stop talking.

He took a deep breath and responded in his usual calm and lighthearted manner, "Okay, well to answer all of your questions..." He clapped his hands together, "I am a student, and I have one more year of highschool ahead of me. I've been a proud attendee of The Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters for about..." He paused and looked at his watch, not having his phone, "...three hours now. I am Ethan Shepard, and I do not have a nickname like you, but it is still nice to meet you Derek. And as for questions..." He paused. "What happened to your bruises? And of course the pivotal question of the day: will the bomb squad be arriving?" He remarked, ending his statement on a lighthearted note. This guy was certainly succeeding at breaking the ice, even if he had scared the life out of the young mutant.

Derek folded his arms across his chest as Ethan introduced himself, still maintaining his friendly smile. As the kid continued, his smile fell a little bit as he realized: Oh, shit, this one's fresh off the cart... Meaning he was probably still processing his arrival at the school. And on top of that, there was no telling how long he'd had his abilities, whatever they were. He'd assumed, at least, Ethan had a few days or so to meet some other mutants. Then came the questions. He smirked a bit as he looked back at what was left of the dummy.

"Oh, that." He replied. "Don't worry about it. A day that goes by here without some kind of loud ka-boom is a quiet day." He thumbed at a nearby tree. It looked like any normal tree on the grounds, but Derek knew better. His former relationship with the former Chief of Security had given him knowledge of where every camera on the school grounds was. He briefly wondered on his whereabouts before shoving those thoughts aside. "I'm sure whoever's workin' security these days has already zeroed in and rewound the surveillance to figure out what happened. Plus, we got quite a few telepaths here who probably heard it and scanned for threats. By now, I'd guess a lot of them are thinking: "Damn it, Derek....""

He decided to elaborate before the kid got paranoid. "We like to keep an eye on everything here, cuz well, let's face it, not a lot of people are friendly with people like us, yet. We're getting there, but 'til then..."

Somebody will always be watching you... He didn't say it because there was no way to say it without sounding creepy, so he moved on to the next question. He picked up a stray piece of wood that had broken off of "the shattering". "As for your other question, didn't realize you were close enough to see." He smirked, a playful smirk that slowly grew into a taunting grin as he continued. "It's part of my mutation. I could just explain it, which would be boring... Plus, a visual aid might help with the demonstration. This is a school, after all. Boss'd LOVE that I'm being more practical. Catch."

He gently lobbed the piece of lumber toward the new kid before shifting his stance, positioning his shoulder in a bracing position. "Hit me." Came the request. "And don't hold back, trust me, I can take it. Break the damn board, if you like."

He knew that Ethan would probably be hesitant. For all he knew, the kid would probably refuse, but in any case, this awkward proposal was Derek's own way of trying to get the kid to loosen up a bit and help him relax. Plus, when dealing with new mutants, Derek figured it best to always treat your mutation like an amusing side prop. It was part of you, sure. But just a part. Being able to laugh and joke about it helped make you comfortable.

Folding his arms, Ethan listened to Derek explain why someone wouldn't be rushing to the scene after he obliterated that wooden man. The new arrival wasn't exactly sure if he was relieved that people were keeping a close eye on things like this, or unsettled that this was a regular occurrence. Then again, no harm no foul. I guess that if no one is really hurt by this, there's no reason I should worry about it. Bringing himself down to a reasonable conclusion, Ethan was able to be comfortable with things like this happening every day, even if it was terrifying at first glance.

Looking at the tree that Derek had pointed to, Ethan creased his brow in confusion. But as Derek continued to explain that the Chief of Security was keeping an eye on things he was able to come to the conclusion that there must be some form of surveillance equipment hidden in its leaves or something. And on top of that, now there were telepaths scanning everywhere in the school to make sure nothing was out of place. Ethan really hoped that they didn't know what was going on somewhere unless they focused on it, because that would be very bad for privacy. And now that he thought about it, how far did the surveillance system stretch if there was equipment in something as obscure as a tree?

I think I just need to try and forget that for my own sake. He thought, running a hand through his hair.

Derek's explanation of his powers was friendly, just like his introduction had been. Maybe this guy was used to encountering new students who had no idea what to expect of this place.

"It's part of my mutation. I could just explain it, which would be boring... Plus, a visual aid might help with the demonstration. This is a school, after all. Boss'd LOVE that I'm being more practical. Catch."

Surprised, Ethan caught the piece of wood that the destructive janitor had tossed to him.

"Hit me." Well this is a fantastic first lesson. He thought. "And don't hold back, trust me, I can take it. Break the damn board, if you like." Derek continued.

Holding the board, he looked at Derek with an air of uncertainty. Is this going to become part of his regular training? This guy was technically part of the staff anyway, so he probably knew what he was doing. Still, this seemed odd. "Are you sure?" He didn't want to hurt him, even if he said he wouldn't. Ethan had seen a lot of people do dumb stuff when their pride got in the way. But to be fair, those people weren't mutants.

The explosion of sound from across the grounds had Piotr scooping his son up while changing into armored form, and striking a hasty pace toward the obstacle course. If there was any actually threat, he would have gotten some telepathic notification fairly quickly, and since none were forthcoming, it was safe enough to scope out the event with his son.

"Nuya, if I tell you, run to Miss Rahne's cabin, da?"

"Da, Papa. I run really fast!"

"Yes you do, you're so fast. But don't forget, ok? Run to miss Rahne if I say run."

The Rasputins arrived on the scene to see what appeared to be two young men conversing next to what used to be a practice dummy. The thing was all singers and debris now, and from the look of things, one of the young men was one of Piotr's best friends.

"Now when did he get back?"

"Who, Papa?"

"That man there. He's going to be your Uncle Derek after he finally meets you, most likely."

"Ooh, New Unta? New Unta is awetome!"

Piotr internally made a note to talk to Alex about Jonny's influence reaching all the way to the Rasputin household at Xavier's.

"Hit me. And don't hold back, trust me, I can take it. Break the damn board, if you like." Well, Derek was certainly making a memorable impression on this new student. Piotr watched the student, staring at the board that Derek had asked him to use. Neither had noticed him yet, and Piotr winked at his son before setting him down.

"Are you sure?"

"Watch this, Nuya."

Without word, Piotr walked up, past Ethan whom still seemed nervous and confused, and slammed his metal knuckles against his friend's forehead with such force as to be audible from the far end of the obstacle course, had anyone been there to listen.

"If someone around here says for you to wail on them, Tovarisch, and they tell you everything will be fine, it's because they're like myself and my friend here. They're Durables." He turned to face Ethan, waving for his son to come over at the same time.

"I'm Piotr Rasputin, otherwise known as the Colossus, and this is my son: Nuya."

Ethan continued to look at Derek with a perplexed look.

Is he actually serious? he thought.

Looking down at the board, Ethan was still unsure if he should oblige to his request or not. He seemed fairly certain of himself, so how bad could one hit of the board be? But then again, people can do stupid things. But then again, he is a mutant...

This back and forth was cut short when a metallic figure stepped past Ethan and slammed his fist into the janitors forehead, sending him flying back into the nearby forest.

"Jesus!" Ethan jumped back in surprise, hugging the plank in a defensive manner, his eyes wide.

Derek went flying, and Ethan was pretty sure that he heard a few trees crack when he entered the forest. The young mutant wasn't even sure if anyone could possibly survive that. After all, the sheer impact of the hit was unnecessarily loud. That was usually a sure sign that someone had not lived through the ordeal. Still, he was a mutant, but that did not seem to be a part of Ethan's current train of thought. The only indication Ethan that he may be okay was that his head didn't go splat when the metal fist slammed into him. The initial shock wearing off, Ethan managed to calm down enough to look at the culprit of this sudden projectile launching once he spoke some very memorable first words.

"If someone around here says for you to wail on them, Tovarisch, and they tell you everything will be fine, it's because they're like myself and my friend here. They're Durables."

Turning, Ethan found himself staring at a man seemingly made out of metal. A Russian one, at that. Ethan had only seen a glimpse of this man before focusing on Derek's flying rag doll of a corpse, so he had assumed he was seeing things when he saw he had a shine. Oh crap, am I next? was all Ethan could think. Immediately after he realized it was silly to think that, given the mans words. But who could blame him for thinking that for a second? After all, this guy just walked in and turned The Human Cannon into The Human Cannonball. And of course the metallic man had a son present to witness this revolutionary new form of artillery. Given all that, the new arrival could pretty easily overlook the fact that this guy was made of metal before blinking a few times, formulating a response.

"I'm... Ethan..." He shook his head, loosening his grip on the board to allow it to drop to his side, relaxing his tone a bit. "I'm sorry, it's nice to meet you but... is he going to be okay?" Ethan asked, looking in the direction the janitor had taken flight toward.

"Hunh?"

That was the only sound Derek managed to make when he saw something shiny barrelling at his head. Next thing he knew, he was airborne, tumbling through the air as he felt a slight stinging tingle on his forehead. Colossus... came the realization as he smashed through the first tree, sending him tail spinning on a different axis, but not slowing him down enough to stop at the second tree. That was enough to keep him from slamming through the third tree, but it could have also had to do with the fact that the third one was a massive oak. Derek managed to hit it flat on his backside and slightly imbed himself in the bark, shaking many of the leaves out of the branches above. He was silent for a second, getting his bearings and watching the leaves slowly drift to the ground, when a smirk came to his face.

Goddamn, it's good to be home.

A loud chuckle drifted out of the woods as Derek pulled himself out of the indentation, calling as he made his way back toward the people he'd sailed from. "Damn, Pete, didja hafta go for the face?" His tone didn't sound angry at all, more like a greeting from an old friend. By the time he'd emerged from the path of destruction, his body was already showing his trademark bruises, signs of the different impacts. One was spreading out across his exposed left arm, where he hit the first tree. The other two, he knew were forming under his shirt, across the right side of his stomach and across his back and neck. But the most noticeable one was the very large, very dark, and very sickening mixture of black, blue, and red spanning itself from his forehead and across the rest of his face. And among it, the white rows of teeth from Derek's usually friendly grin.

He rubbed it a bit as he made his way back to the pair, no, trio across from him. He noticed a toddler standing near Pete. Another new student? Damn, and it's a REALLY little one. He wasn't close enough yet to hear anything they were saying, but he shouted, still smiling. "You used to hold back. That one actually stung a little."

"Oh, don't worry about him. If anything, I knocked some sense into him, rather than knocking any screws loose. He's a tough guy." Piotr said, reassuring both the teen and his son.

"Damn, Pete, didja hafta go for the face? You used to hold back. That one actually stung a little."

He could hear the laughter in his friend's voice, and with a laugh of his own, he waved at his friend. Derek wasn't a mutant with superstrength, but he was one with durability; a durability that rivaled that of Piotr's metal or Cain's own flesh. But judging from the debris, Derek's gifts were multiplying.

"I figured it would be a better welcome back to give you the best love tap I could!" He hollered back. He picked Nuya up, holding him high on his shoulder so he could more easily see the path Derek's body had taken.

"One day, Nuya, one day you'll be able to do that just like Papa can."

"I be new Colsus!" Nuya said, giggling when his mispronunciation of the title caused his daddy to begin tickling him. Quickly the two were on the ground in a form of mocked wrestling.

"You're gonna be 'Colsus' are you? Gonna be the big shiny 'Colsus'?" Nuya's laughter grew louder, and for a moment, the two Rasputins forgot about their companions. Gaining their composure, Piotr looked to Ethan, and the now nearer Derek.

"When did you get back, Derek? I didn't hear word at all about you coming back to Xavier's?" He said, pulling the man into a gentle hug when he was close enough to do so.

"So, did this ruffian offer to show you around, Ethan, or does a father and son duo have to do it in his place? Wait, I almost forgot. Nuya, say hello to Mr. Addams."

"Hello Miter Adam!"

"Oh, don't worry about him. If anything, I knocked some sense into him, rather than knocking any screws loose. He's a tough guy."

That's what he says.

The young mutant understood that their mutations gave them durability and protection, but it was still hard to believe that he could walk away from a hit like that so easily.

"Damn, Pete, didja hafta go for the face? You used to hold back. That one actually stung a little."

And there it was. Turning his head, Ethan saw the man who had just crashed through two trees and uprooted a third walking back as if nothing happened. Just like Colossus had said, the janitor didn't seem to be fazed at all by the devastating impact that had just been delivered to his forehead. Maybe the shock wave from that hit damaged his brain or something. And by this point it shouldn't come as a shock that the older Rasputin would hoist his child onto his shoulder to give him a view of the destruction and hopes of punching guys through trees just like papa. This oddly tender father-son moment then turned into a kid-friendly Terminator movie as the two engaged in the most intimidating yet fun to watch tickle fight that Ethan had ever witnessed. Although Ethan must have been staring, because Piotr regained his composure pretty quickly after he had looked at him.

"So, did this ruffian offer to show you around, Ethan, or does a father and son duo have to do it in his place?"

The metallic bruiser asked this question with a surprisingly warm sense of hospitality. It was going to be a really weird adjustment period for Ethan as he tried to get used to people with this kind of destructive power treating him so kindly. He still didn't like the fact that he was judging mutants based on appearances, but he also figured that this kind of thinking was just from the initial shock of coming to the school in the first place.

"Ah... no, he wasn't showing me around." Ethan shook his head a little nervously, but politely. "Mr. Summers pointed out where a few places were when he was helping me move my stuff to my room, but that's about it. Right now I'm actually just looking around the school, trying to see where stuff is and familiarize myself with its layout." He added, looking up at the metal man.

"I figured it would be a better welcome back to give you the best love tap I could!"

Pete's voice rang back across the field, making Derek chuckle again. It was the kind of understanding that tended to happen amongst mutants with similar powers. Particularly with mutants in this line of work, where their abilities and training meant they were on the forefront of mutant/human relations. Where one of the things you came across, about every 3-6 months, was an Earth-shattering circumstance that if you didn't fight it, everyone was screwed, and then ended up fighting off pseudo-military and ancient space-bug races.

If you knew how much abuse your comrade was capable of comfortably taking, it became a playful kind of "ribbing".

"When did you get back, Derek? I didn't hear word at all about you coming back to Xavier's?" Piotr asked as he pulled him in for a hug. The metal-man hadn't "de-metalled" yet, so it was still a bit stiff to Derek. He pulled away, shrugging.

"Ah, well, I got back sometime around 1 AM this morning. Didn't even wake up 'til about a few hours ago." He shrugged. "Must be all the travel." He completely avoided the part about only asking Scott two days ago if he could get his old job back. His "Leave of Absence" became a bit more extended than he'd originally thought it was going to, but, he'd been welcomed back. And he was grateful. But that was between him and Scott, and he still had yet to talk to him properly, face to face.

"So, did this ruffian offer to show you around, Ethan, or does a father and son duo have to do it in his place? Wait, I almost forgot. Nuya, say hello to Mr. Addams."

"Hello Miter Adam!"

And then there was this. Pete had a kid? The kid looked like he was maybe 3 or four. Jeez, I haven't been gone THAT long, have I? He'd ask about the specifics later, he decided. For now, he extended his fist toward the toddler on Pete's shoulder. "Nice t'meet ya, little man." His Southern accent showing a bit. Then he looked at Ethan, who he was sure by now was questioning the fabric of reality.

"Ah... no, he wasn't showing me around. Mr. Summers pointed out where a few places were when he was helping me move my stuff to my room, but that's about it. Right now I'm actually just looking around the school, trying to see where stuff is and familiarize myself with it's layout"

"I was just answering mister Ethan here's questions about my bruises. It was one of the first questions he had. Well, hell, I don't even think you got to see it before I left!" Derek grinned at Piotr as he clenched his fists. His eagerness was showing again, making him look like the 18-year-old his body and sometimes his mind was permanently stuck in before he cleared his throat and took a moment to re-compose himself, then took on a professional tone as he spoke. After all, it WAS a lesson, right?

"As this big lug just generously demonstrated for you, I can take quite a bit of abuse." Derek explained to the new teen while mischievously glaring at the big metal Russian. He then pointed to the black mass on his forehead. "However, what he didn't know was that I store the kinetic energy of every hit I take. For the longest time, I thought all it was that I could live through any hit, but still bruised." He smirked. "But, thanks to the help of the school and Doc McTaggert, I found out these bruises aren't really bruises."

He folded his arms across his chest. "Basically, every time I get hit, my body keeps the energy of the impact, here..." he tapped the center of the black, blue, and veiny mess spreading across his face before tapping the one on his exposed left arm. The one that hit the first tree. "Here.." Then he lifted the hem of his shirt to show another bruise spreading across the side of his abdomen where he hit the second tree "There..." Then he turned around, pulling his shirt up and over his shoulders to expose his back, where a bruise almost as nasty as the one on his face was growing. "And there." He looked over his shoulder at the three of them.

"They're not really bruises. It's the energy of the impact." He finished while pulling his shirt down, turning to face them. "And apparently, it's something I can channel. I'm still working out how to work it."

"Ah... no, he wasn't showing me around... trying to see where stuff is and familiarize myself with its layout."

"Well, trust me, you've come across the two guys who know more about this place than almost everyone else. Back in the day, we were the head Maintennance workers. We've cleaned and fixed every nook and cranny in this place." Piotr paused and looked at the dummy. "Including that mass of debris there, now."

"I was just answering mister Ethan here's questions about my bruises." Piotr grinned at first, knowing all about the bruises that leapt upon Derek's skin in exchange for hm being indestructible, but as his friend continued on, his smile faded and a look of interest took its place.

"They're not really bruises. It's the energy of the impact stored... I'm still working out how to work it."

"So you broke the dummy, what, expelling the bruise? That's pretty awesome."

"Tha's awetome." Nuya agreed, giggling a little bit as Derek showed off the bruises on his face and back. "Papa, Miter Adam look like spotty puppy."

"Yes, he does. He looks like a Dalmation, doesn't he?" Piotr said, smiling wider.

"Da'matin!" Nuya agreed solemnly, as if this was a very serious subject.

"Oh, yes, Derek. This is my son, Nuya. His mother was one of the women I saved from the dinosaur, remember, from back in the Savage Lands? Well, turns out more things happened than I remembered..."

He went on to explain that whatever happened with the Illuminati caused a few more rifts in time and space to occur, which lead to his adventure with a group of mixed faction members being shunted off to the savage lands. There they'd fought a tyrannical woman who'd tried to kill or enslaves all of the other clans.

"We barely made our escape, and I was carrying Nuya when we made it back to the rift. A cave in happened, and when the dust had settled, we were all on this side, but Nereel hadn't made it through. We couldn't shut the rift, so I caused a cave in on this side as well. It's more trouble trying to get to that rift now than is worth the time."
