It was funny to think how much had changed for Rahne professionally speaking in her seven years here at the school. When she first arrived, her job was a one-woman job. There were less than ten children within her jurisdiction at the school, and her classroom operated much like the one-room school of old, in which many ages inhabited the same room and were taught to at different points. There were just that few pre-pubescent mutants in the world, let alone at the school itself.

And now, there were enough kids to justify grade separations, albeit not complete grade separation. 4th-6th grade were all in one class, for example. Either way, it was no longer enough for just one person. Rahne had gone from being self-sufficient to being overseer for a department. In some ways, she was like a sub-principal, in charge of essentially a school within the school. That meant vetting and recruiting new teachers in some cases, and in others, bringing in student-teachers who were interested in learning the ropes.

That's what brought her out here, in the warmth and the sunlight (because who wanted to do an interview on such a lovely early-summer day?) - getting to know a new student who had expressed interest in the elementary program. Wasn't all too common that they got students who wanted to work with kids, so when they did, Rahne pounced fast and sunk her fangs in, figuratively speaking (since she was more than capable of literally doing that too).

She had sent the email to the girl, Sofia, this morning, asking her to meet her out here, and now here she was, sitting on a wooden bench within view of the lake. But she wasn't alone, and in fact, she rarely was when on campus anymore.

Her young son Greg, at nearly a year and a half old, had come to be fascinated with walking and running on two legs as opposed to four, much to his parents' collective relief, as he was much slower and easier to catch when he ran amok, which was often.

Now, he was an intent and dedicated hunter, as much as he could be at this age at least. He was relentless and dogged in his pursuit of a bright and large swallowtail butterfly, which continually flitted just out of his reach, much to his laughing amusement, little tail wagging as he toddled after his intended prey.

Mom was content to sit back and watch for now, as the little werewolf was in no danger himself.

The last two days of living at the mansion had been surreal for her. At once, Sofia was struck by a nervousness of not being accepted - natural, considering her recent enrolment - and a sense of familiarity. Being able to use her powers (openly and within limits) brought a sense of freedom and new-found confidence, while being in the midst of banter and friendly teasing made her feel like she was living with a big family again.

It reminded her of Caracas.

Growing up, she was always outgoing and playful, which naturally drew children her age to her. With her young cousins, she was the entertainer, babysitting them when her uncle was busy, taking them to fly kites, or build sandcastles on the beach. After school, she helped out, teaching young girls to dance.

Determined to be proactive in building a new life here, she set about finding somewhere to help, to keep busy, anything at all. When the chance came for her to maybe help out with the younger kids, she was ready and very willing.

Ms Russell, who she now knew was in-charge, had asked to meet with her that morning. Fia had a feeling that the interview process to be an aide in a class of young mutants, was going to be a little different from a normal job interview. For one, most people didn't have job interviews out in the open air.

Unsure of what she could contribute, or even if she could, Fia went with an open mind.

Still excited with the use of her powers, Sofia walked only a few steps towards the lake before she took off, letting the wind carry her across the distance. Nearing the lake, she spotted the teacher and a toddler.

"Ms - Mrs Russell?" she asked, landing softly on the grass near them and careful with her wind speed so as not to endanger the child.

"Hi, I'm Sofia. You asked to see me?"

Rahne senses the change in air currents before she heard them, feeling the pressure change in her highly sensitive nasal cavity. Greg seemed to notice it too, as far as she could tell, but didn't know what to make of it, standing there, confused and looking around him at a change he couldn't see. She was sure he'd learn that stuff eventually. Even being born with superhuman senses and lupine traits didn't mean you automatically knew how to use them or make sense of them.

And as Sofia touched down on the ground, Rahne recognized in her an emotion that many a mutant experienced upon getting here - elation and freedom. Here, she could exercise her abilities, freely and without judgement, possibly for the first time ever, and it was a glorious feeling. She remembered her own freedom moment quite well, even nearly twenty years after the fact.

"I did, aye," Rahne said with a nod of her head. Greg watched the girl cautiously, less surprised that she flew in than the fact that he didn't know her. Didn't know her scent, or the sound of her voice. In a sense, he had his protective instincts, not liking that a stranger was approaching his mom. But the attack instinct wasn't there, thank goodness. Not against people at least.

Realizing that his butterfly prey had taken advantage of his distraction to flutter up and out of his reach, Greg whined and hopped a bit, trying to paw at it despite it being way up above him now.

"I understand ye may have some interest in workin' with the wee bairns," Rahne said as she patted the seat next to her. "Figured we could chat a bit 'fore I placed ye. Ye got yuir self a preferred age range? Like this guy right here? A wee bit older? Junior high?"

The wind stilled, drifting past only in a comfortable breeze. Leaves that she has picked up on her flight fluttered to the grass, and she walked the remaining steps to Rahne and her accompanying toddler.

Upon closer look though, Sofia found that toddler might have been a rather loose definition. The child had a tail, and her eyes told her that his cautious reaction was not normal for his age. Obviously a part of his powers had already manifested - she didn't grow up among children like her, but it was an amazing idea that she would get to take care of them as they grew into their powers. She grinned widely. Playtime was going to get a lot more interesting, that was for sure.

Waving at the child, she sent three dandelion puffs flying towards him - it seemed he had lost his last target as the butterfly flew upwards.

"Yes, I'm interested," she said, taking a seat next to Rahne while watching her flying dandelion puffs. "I've only taught dance, and only to young ones, but I know how to keep children having fun!"

While most of her teenage years were not... Fun, Sofia remembered what life was like when her mother was around. It was warm, happy, generous. And when they moved in with her uncle, her mother helped care for her cousins when her brother was busy. Miranda built forts with them, taught them how to make kites, and always baked cookies for them. Playing, now that was how one spent a childhood.

"No preferences, no," Fia answered. "I'm happy to help wherever you need me, though I have to say, I can't teach math at any level, except when the classes only involve counting apples and oranges!" Math was her Achilles Heel, though rightly, Fia didn't think she was qualified to teach anything- maybe aside from dance.

Greg smiled back at Sofia, a wide smile that revealed the sharp little teeth that filled his mouth. And then his surprise, as a waft of dandelion floated his way on a controlled breeze. He watched them for a moment, eyes wide and entranced, before lunging forward on little werewolf feet and taking a big, chomping bite at them.

"That's good," Rahne said, looking down to her son who shook his head as several dandelion puffs stuck stubbornly to his tongue. "Fun is good at their age. Helps 'em learn, helps 'em grow. Hopefully, Greg here just learned that he does nae like t' bite flower puffs. Oh, c'mere, ye wee rascal."

She beckoned him over, and he obliged, trying to pull the fluff off if his tongue and not doing so well. Out of the bag at her side, Rahne produced a water bottle, and squirted some into his open mouth, the water washing the seeds away.

"He's a biter sometimes. Lord knows he's gotten his da an' me good on a few occasions - but he's gettin' better at it, learning that when we tell 'im no, we mean it," she chuckled.

"Anyway, dance. That could be good, an' definitely a consideration for extracurricular. An' ye dinnae have to worry 'bout maths too much. Highest we get to is fractions. Once it gets t' pre-algebra an' geometry, high school takes over."

Rahne pondered for a moment, wiping some stray water away from Greg's face before he toddled off to play some more, this time stomping around in a rough circle for no apparent reason. It certainly seemed to amuse him though, as he babbled something incoherent.

"So what do I need t' know about Sofia Mon-Tay-Ga? Did I pronounce that right? I'm terrible with new names, which I know, I should nae be, with how often I've been called 'Ron' or 'Ran' or 'Renee'."

The little boy-wolf didn't waste time in attacking his new fluffy targets, and Fia chuckled as he snapped down on them, only to find them cling to his tongue. He was a playful, active kid and it reflected well on his energy levels - it also meant that she would probably get a work out if her job was to be keeping up with them.

Rahne was the epitome of a prepared Mama, and immediately, she sorted out her son's little kerfuffle with the seeds. Toddlers with teething issues were not new to her; she remembered a large part of her baby sitting experience entailed getting her teeshirt, fingers and hair, chewed on. Of course, none of her cousins had sharp teeth that were probably capable of doing more damage than a child's milk molars.

In short order, Greg returned to entertaining himself and the older woman turned her attention to her.

"Man-Tay-Ga," Fia replied, "But it's okay, I've heard worse renditions," she laughed, "Uhm, about me?" the rhetorical question was more for herself to get her thoughts straight.

"I'm from Venezuela, but I moved to New York.. Almost four years ago to live with my father. In our little town, I was... how do you say this, the graceful one. I think it is because I could fly, so then dancing came very easy. My mother was a dancer, she danced ballet and the flamenco," Fia started. She wasn't sure what Mrs Russell wanted to know, so she started from the beginning.

She mentioned that she lost her mother in the riots, and that she had lived with her uncle and many cousins before her mother left them. When she attended school in New York City, she had kept her grades up in hopes of pleasing her father, and continued to study dance as an extracurricular. It was only after many months of convincing him did her father agree for her to attend Xavier's.

"I don't know if I can be a fighter, or an advocate," she told Rahne honestly. "I don't know if one day I'll be protecting my friends or defending my cause. But I know what I can do, for now, is to at least make sure that children who are different didn't have to grow up like me. My uncle and my father didn't appreciate me and how I stood out. I had to hide who I really was under lies and false hope. I thought that if I stopped using my powers, my father would eventually accept me. It wasn't going to happen."

"Being told you're inadequate is a terrible feeling to have, and if I can keep the kids happy and confident, then maybe that's half the battle won."

"Venezuela," Rahne repeated with a nod of her head. "I've at times been jealous of anybody what grew up in a warm, sunny, tropical environment. Muir Isle has its moments - plenty o' green, an' some lovely views, but 'tis also prone t' cold an' dreariness - much like most o' Scotland."

Granted, much of her jealousy, which was going unsaid, stemmed from the perception that those women, exotic and alluring, were often seen as much more preferable to women like her, pale and short. But she'd gotten over that once she had made it out of her awkward teenage years, had grown strong and cifident in her own right. It was amazing, when she thought about it, how much she had changed growing up. How much she had matured and developed and grown in self-confidence and independent identity. She was no more the awkward, shrimpy teenager with crippling self-esteem issues than a monarch butterfly was a caterpillar.

"I know a thing or two about... less than stellar fathers," Rahne said, shaking her head. "Took me years t' figure out an' accept that all the hate I got from mine, all the animosity an' emotional abuse? That was his fault, his failing, nae mine. So I think I can confidently say that yuir da sounds like a real loser. He never appreciated you? His loss, nae yuirs."

Clearly though, that wasn't something Rahne needed to tell her. Sofia very obviously understood that well. Perhaps she said it as much for her own benefit as Sofia's.

"I like that mentality, though. It's honestly quite a lot of why I picked this specialty. I know what it's like t' be a young mutant, t' be cast out an' in need o' rescue. I had somebody swoop in an' save me, now I pay it forward. An' believe me, ye'll nae find an ounce of pressure t' put on a costume an' punch bad guys if'n ye dinnae want it. The most we will have ye do is learn t' defend yuir self, an' if necessary, the kids."

Rahne nodded her head, and folded her hands over each other in her lap.
"Well, I asked a question, so now it's yuir turn. What do ye wanna know from me?"

It was reassuring to hear that Rahne had walked the same paths she did. That was it about life wasn't it? Sometimes you felt so alone that you think it's all on you. You battle those fears alone thinking that no one, absolutely no one understood how you felt or what you went through. Fia felt like that. She remembered those feelings of abandonment as she was on the plane to New York. While she didn't remember the words her father shouted at her, she remembered how her throat felt like it was stuffed full with cotton wool, how her eyes hurt from the strain of keeping her tears from falling. She remembered how she cried herself to sleep when her mother died.

But it wasn't true. She wasn't alone in all of this. Even though she might take this journey alone, someone would have gone before her. Someone would be able to tell her - it's okay, you'll be fine. We got out of it, and so can you. It encouraged her that Mrs Russell shared her life's experience - they had more in common than she first thought.

Sofia smiled in agreement, not really trusting herself to say anything else without choking up.

"I'll protect the children of course," her voice took on a determined, steely edge. She knew she wouldn't be asked to fight, this was a school after all, but she'd learn for the children. She'd protect them like her mother shielded her as best as she could.

She looked at Rahne's son, playing on the grass and thought of the other children who would come to them - students younger than she was. Students who saw only the hurt their powers had caused and not the good it brought out, and imagined their fear - fallen leaves rose from the grass as Fia's powers reached out in an extension of her emotions.

Seeing the leaves kick up about her ankles, Fia bit back a breath and immediately tampered it down. Air stilled, no harm, no foul.

Clearing her throat, she paused for a second, then asked, "Is there anything you would do differently about your life now, and if there was, what is it?"

There was nothing so important about a person's past than their present, but Fia wanted to know if Mrs Russell had regrets- it made her wonder if she would have regrets.

"I'm certain ye will. 'Tis one o' those sad, unfortunate facts o' mutant life - there are always people who want t' hurt us, or worse. I do hold out hope that one day we'll be able to minimize that, to get to a point where enough people dinnae want t' see us harmed or ostracized or worse that it'll make a difference an' we'll be treated like people, but..."

She glanced down to her son, knowing that outside of the Institute's walls, outside of specific sanctuaries and safe zones, he would be viewed as a monster, a subhuman creature who would be met with fear, revulsion, or worse. This sweet, innocent child who meant no harm to anyone, no malice, no ill-will.

"Sometimes, 'tis a bit hard t' be optimistic," she said with a sigh. "'Specially when ye've got a wee one t' fret an' worry over. I'd kill for that boy. I'd tear people apart with naught but my teeth an' muh claws an' I could do it too. I just pray I never have to."

But then the topic moved on to regrets, and Rahne had to think. She worked hard to not live with regrets, to not let them bog her down and affect her day to day life. However...

"I'd have treated muh biological mother better," she said with a nod of her head. "She tracked me down a few years ago, spent some time here, tried hard to build a new connection after all those years. An' I shut her down 'till the very end of her visit. I was awful. We speak on the phone every week, but 'tis nae quite the same. An' I still feel guilty over how cruel I was."

She nodded her head slowly.
"How 'bout you?"

A world where they would not be judged, or be ostracised? Now that would be heaven indeed. How long more did they need to prove themselves before even being able to be seen as equal? Fia didn't think she deserved any less than her powerless peers. If she was completely honest, she sometimes felt she was better - and history had told them all that that was a dangerous opinion to have. Squashing down her feelings, she focused instead on Rahne and what she was describing. The older woman was frank, and to the point, and Sofia appreciated that. At least she didn't need to second guess herself around the person who was likely going to somewhat be her boss.

She looked down at the boy as Rahne spoke and could easily imagine herself fighting for the survival of these children. Yes, were she able, she would cross hell and high waters for them. They were innocent, just like she was when she was shoved to a man who despised her and then left unwanted. Nothing chased innocence away as fast as needing to grow up.

The situation was so similar to hers, and Sofia saw that as clear as day. If one day her father had come to her, and asked to build their relationship again, she would likely have behaved no differently than Rahne did. She would have ignored Walter Barrett until the day he left, and then maintained just enough connection that was morally acceptable. Walter did take care of her daily expenses and living costs, and she appreciated that accordingly, but to have a relationship with the man who was no more than a stranger... That would take determination, and a lot of work she didn't know if she was ready for.

Still, self-pity was not her preferred mode of existence, and Fia smiled a little as Mrs Russell turned the question back to her.

I would have gone with my mother the day she died, was her first thought.

She had to remind herself that it wasn't her fault - by no logical interpretation could she have ever divined that her mother was in danger. Fia had gone through the grief and self-blame in past years that she now already understood and accepted that there was nothing she could do. Sofia used to think that if she had gone, she could have helped her mother escape. They could have flown. But Fia had never gone with Miranda to work, it was neither habit nor any logical reasoning that would have prompted Fia to go on the bus.

Of course, on that logic, Fia couldn't count it as a true regret, considering she wouldn't even have a choice of those actions. And so she shook her head and said, "I would maybe have wanted to be less scared of my uncle and what he thought of me, and more focused on what I could do. I think when I was younger, I was so concerned about what people thought of me, that I.... I lost a lot of time just in that... I wish I didn't, and maybe then things would be different."

"I don't know how different, but maybe it would be different."

It wasn't her intention to divert their conversation to such sombre topics, so Fia smiled at an appropriate moment of silence and asked, "So how can I help? With the children, I mean."

"Well, that's one thing ye've no need to worry about here," Rahne said with a nod of her head. She, like most people at the school, knew all too well what it was like to fear others, to be afraid of what they'd think, how they'd react. She'd been fortunate in that sense, that most of her childhood was spent on Muir Island, where for the most part it didn't matter that she had fur and claws and fangs and wild tendencies. Moira certainly never treated her like anything less than a person, and neither did the others working for her, but it was a long time until she was ready to leave that island safely.

"Ye'll likely learn a good lot about yuir abilities ye've never discovered, even. I was twenty 'fore I learned I could completely change, make the full transition. An' by then, I wasn't even a student anymore. Amazing what ye can do in a judgement-free environment, aye?"

And right there, Sofia touched upon the real danger of what ifs. The real problem with it. You could wish that things were different all you wanted, you could wish you did things differently, wish you'd experienced different things, but you never could tell what those experiences, what those differences would lead to. For all you knew, the way you wished it could have been could very well be worse than the way it was.

"Well, ye'll start off assisting in my classroom, I think most likely in the first through third grade division. Helping to organize supplies, helping kids with problems on their assignments, and where necessary, offering guidance an' insight into well... I hate t' use the term, but 'mutant problems'. That's one thing that'll come with time. Eventually, ye'll be able to apply what ye know about yuir own mutation to all kinds of different types."

"Definitely." It would be wonderful to slowly discover the extent of her abilities. She looked forward to that journey.

It wasn't as if she hadn't considered that her life would have been very different if she stayed in Caracas. Sure, she might have not been left in the hands of an uncaring parent, but neither would she have had the chance to come to Xaviers - she remembered the days of the Complacency Wave clearly. Those scant two days showed her what her life had been if she had a supportive environment to grow up in. It cemented her views on wanted to join the Xaviers student cohort, and she had fought hard to be allowed to come.

Each choice she made in life defined her path more and more, and as she grew older, Sofia knew that her choices would interact with choices of others, and at some point, she would have to be accountable.

Accountability, it was a concept for adults, those who were responsible for themselves, and for the welfare of those around them. For them, those blessed with powers, learning to be accountable with their abilities was something they no doubt needed to learn. To have integrity, to make good decisions with the right values in place. To be strong, and supple, yet firm in the belief that they would make the right choice between what is right, and what is easy.

"It sounds like a huge responsibility, but I like a challenge, and I'm ready to get started whenever you'd like me," Fia said after taking a breath. "Frankly, I'm just happy to be here, and I'll like to help the school in anyway that I can. Also, it helps that the kids are super cute." She grinned at Rahne's son, wondering if the rest of her charges were as playful as he was.

"Nae gonna lie to ye, it surely is a big responsibility," Rahne said with a slow nod of her head. "An' there have been a few, nae many, but a few, who've come in to help thinkin' it'd be all sunshine an' rainbows an' playing with adorable wee bairns an' crumblin' when things got rough. But. I'd like to think that's nae you."

She smiled, before glancing over to her son, who had found himself a bright red ladybug to watch, and instead of trying to catch it, trying to kill it, trying to eat it, he just sat there staring at it, watching as it slowly crawled along a blade of grass.

She didn't know for sure that Sofia had the fortitude of character to stick with it, but she felt it in a sense. There were similarities here, between Sofia and herself, despite the obvious differences. They'd come from different backgrounds, but similar circumstances, and experienced similar disappointments in early life, with people who were supposed to care for them. She had the feeling that Sofia was more like her than different, and that would make all the difference in the world when it came to the kids.

"Well, good. We can start on Monday, give ye plenty of time to acclimate an' get comfortable. But feel free to stop in before then to observe an' get a feel for things. Plus - that way," Rahne pointed over her shoulder, out to a spot away from the main campus, "that's where Greg an' I live with muh husband. Nice little cabin on the outskirts o' the woods, cannae miss it. Feel free to stop by any time ye'd like, if we're in, an' nae - ye know - preoccupied - if ye need anything, or ye just wanna talk or whatever. We've got a relatively open door policy."

"Not at all, Ma'am," she answered immediately.

It wasn't going to always be sunshine and rainbows and unicorns, that was for sure, but children were happy little people, and seeing them happy would be a more than adequate trade off for tantrums here and there, dirty nappies and whatever else kids managed to get up their sleeves.

"But. I'd like to think that's nae you."

Mrs Russell's trust prompted a kind of determination to swell up inside her, the kind that she applied to her school work and dedication to earning her father's approval when she first arrived. Sofia would not let herself disappoint the teacher.

Fia followed where she pointed and spotted a clearing beyond the trees. Mrs Russell was very kind. Not many would open up their homes after schooling hours to students and staff, but Sofia somehow got the feeling that things went very differently here at the school.

"It's very kind of you!" Fia said, grinning widely. "I won't bother you unnecessarily of course, and I expect you'll see enough of me at the day care as it is!"

Sofia thought for a moment, then continued, "It doesn't seem like I have many scheduled classes for the summer, so I'll help out as much as you'll have me, but once school starts again, then I'll think about plan B."

Fia made it clear that she didn't intend to stop volunteering at the daycare, but at the same time, she recognised that needing to juggle both school work and training would require some manoeuvring. Still, nothing they couldn't work out, she was sure.

"That's possible, aye, but still. I kept an open door policy when I was single, an'i keep as much of an open door policy as possible now that I'm not," Rahne said with a smile. "I dinnae have quite as much time t' do so as I did, but still - I feel it's part of muh responsibilities as a teacher an' mentor to be as available as I can. Plus, ye know - I'd much rather have office hours at home than in a classroom."

Rahne nodded her head slowly, and shrugged her shoulders.
"Aye, summer can get a touch odd here, I'll admit," she said, sighing slightly. "We've got a good lot of students with nowhere else t' go. Some are fortunate t' have families who are still involved in their lives, but enough of 'em, thus school is what they've got. So we keep activities for them, so they're nae so terribly bored during summer break. Kinda like... Kinda like summer camp, but if camp was right where they are all the time. Though we are nearing the point in time where we've got some day trips an' whatnot to begin planning, so ye're more 'n welcome t' take part in those meetings. in the air they like to fly.
Dog and butterfly.

laughing - she don't know why,
but she had to try, she had to try.
Dog and Buttefly.
