Fia could imagine. Juggling daycare responsibilities as well as her own tot had to make for a busy schedule indeed. No doubt, living and working at the school had its advantages- you could work from home, or be expected to be working even while at home. Then again, caring for the children had seemingly become second nature to Rahne that it didn't seem much like additional responsibility, more like a part of her colourful life.

"I'll be there," she said, when Mrs Russell mentioned day trips and meetings. She hadn't had much chance to explore the town, so any chance to get out would be a welcome one, even if she went to keep an eye on the younger ones. She suspected with so many of their miniature superheroes running round, the teachers would need extra eyes and hands.

Little Greg approached them soon, and it signaled to Sofia that it was time for their conversation to come to an end - the pup needed his Mama, and her attention was quickly appropriated to him.

She watched mother and child, and wondered for the first time what it would be like to be a mother. It was still years and years from that day, but this was the first time she saw a mutant mother, and her unconditional love for her similarly empowered son. Sofia saw the sacrifices that Mrs Russell would make easily for the sake of her boy, and how readily she would pounce on those that threatened him. One day, one day, Sofia herself would be such a mother. The vision strengthened her resolve even more. Training hard took on another facet of her determination. Before, she had nothing to loose, and nothing to gain, not while living with her father. Now, a new world had opened up to her, and she felt keenly the losses in which some of the world would push onto her. Her shoulders felt heavier with the responsibilities.

"I'm glad to be onboard. Helping out makes me feel like at least I'm doing something to give back. You all are giving me a new life as it is. Like you said - paying it forward... Makes me feel... Rooted, somehow." Her words were sincere, and soft, as if she saw her future in what Rahne, a family, a child. It gave her something to work towards.

"So. Monday?" It'd be time enough to get to know the tiny people. Before that, she'd somehow have to sort out her list of class times.

"Good," Rahne said with a sharp nod of her head as she quite subconsciously began gently stroking the top of her son's head as he made it clear that he was beginning to be ready for a little nap. Knowing him, she was certain it wouldn't last long, but she had come to realize that she could let him have a little siesta in the afternoon without disrupting night-time sleeping patterns. Usually. She just hoped this was one of those times.

"I've got a good feelin' about you, Sofia Mantega," she said with a smile, speaking the girl's last name out slowly to make sure pronounced it correctly. "An' I'm usually a very good judge o' character. I see the right stuff in you, the right motivations an' a good heart. They'll take ye very far in this school, honestly. As far as ye'd like to go, even. An' I'm glad t' be a part o' that."

It wasn't terribly common that Rahne got to be involved in an older student's experience at Xavier's. Usually, she started them off young, and then handed them off to the other teachers when it was time to mold them into adults. It was more her job to let them be kids, to help them have childhoods, than it was to form their adult lives.

"Aye, Monday," Rahne said with a nod of her head. "I'd better go put this guy down for a ye-know-what, so I'll see you around. It was wonderful meet in' you, truly it was."

[size0]Say the dog and butterfly,
in the air they like to fly.
Dog and butterfly.
She knew she had to try,
and she float back down to the warm soft ground,
laughing - she don't know why,
but she had to try, she had to try.
Dog and Buttefly.

While Rahne spoke those words factually, Sofia fould them easier to believe. Yes, she did have a future here, and it was looking brighter and brighter. She had a chance to make something of herself, instead of hiding, lying, avoiding something that people saw as unnatural, but to her, it was... well, her. It would not be easy, certainly. Journeys to amazing places were hardly ever what they seemed. But for the first time in her life, she felt as if someone had walked this journey before, and what they told her, was that the route was amazing.

"It was great meeting you too," Sofia replied. Greg was falling asleep already, and Fia kept her voice down to not jarr the toddler. He was a cute (if a little dangerous) one, and she looked forward to getting to know him better. This was one of those situations where she felt she would be able to learn from those a tenth of her age. Children had a kind of confidence and security she lacked, perhaps being with them, they'd be able to rub off on her. It was a funny thought, but a legitimate one all the same.

They parted ways from the lake and this time, Fia decided to stroll back to the school. Her mind was filled to the brim with thoughts about her past, her present, and the tremulous future ahead. The future that at some point, she'd meet, and the future that had held trepidation up till today. She was young, they all were. How could they be expected to know how they wanted to live, or what values they had, or what side they wanted to stand on?

What if we didn't want to pick a side?

But seeing Rahne, and Greg, had nudged her into one definite direction. She'd be on the side that saved them. The children. She'd be on the side that gave them a safe place to grow, to learn.
