Wind Manipulation/Flight

The weight of his head on hers was a sensation that she would remember for a while. Her mother used to do the same thing - rest her chin on Fia's head - when Sofia was upset. Miranda would stroke her hair gently, soothing her with kind words and tones. Then Sofia's tears would stop, and her voice dolorous, would ask for cookies and milk, and Miranda would agree - anything to make her little girl happy. If she was using Julian's presence and ready affection to fill a void in her life, she neither realized nor cared. Eyes shut and heart beating, her ears were attuned to their surrounds as if she was connected to them. In a way, perhaps she was. She heard it all as much as she felt it- the small, minute changes in the wind, the sound of water hitting the grass, the heat in the summer night. She didn't even know how long they stood there in silence, their minds, perhaps playing tricks on them as visions and dreams came coursing through. Fia, in her mind's eye, saw a life at the institute - welcoming newer students, being the one that they could go to for advice or help. She did not envision herself as a fighter, but as an older sister, or a teachers aide, yes, those were things she could imagine. It was his voice that broke the silence, and she straightened, releasing his hand - the moment was lost. But it appeared that sprinklers, a solemn vow and the millions of stars were not the only surprises Mother Nature had in stored for them. A bright white streaked across the sky like a painter's magical brushstroke. The sky was dotted with glitter, yet none were as bright as this one shooting star. "A wish?" she asked, leaning her hands on the structure's railings. What was it that Cinderella said? A dream was a wish your heart made? Her dreams had been all bright lights and anxiety lately - those weren't good wishes to make. Closing her eyes, she silently wished for a smooth sailing school year, and a bright future. That done, she turned to Julian, the corners of her lips turned up in a smirk, "Did you wish for you to win our next race?" she teased him, wanting to lighten the mood. They had been contemplative and almost weepy all night that a joke or two was going to be good for them both.. Poking fun at Julian was also turning out to be one of her favourite activities - mostly because it seemed he took it all in good naturally and let her win. |

In spite of the warm night, Julian's hand felt cold now with her no longer holding it. He watched her as she looked at the shooting star with wonder in her eyes like a child. She was wishing. He almost felt like he was intruding for a moment, until she turned and looked back at him. "Did you wish for you to win our next race?" He let out a laugh at the sudden jab. It was a genuine laugh, and it felt good. "Whatever. We both know I don't need to waste a perfectly good wish on that. I took you with just a wink and a smile last time." Cheep shot, it was true. And he was still not proud of that maneuver, but she started it this time. "I may not be as bookish as Ros, or as kind as Ethan, but I got what I got and I use it," he smirked. "Besides, is that your way of challenging me to a rematch, because I warn you, I have been working on a little move that goes a little something like this." Julian did what he knew was a terrible and comical impression of Zoolander's blue steel look. He really played it up. "Sexy, right? This look could kill in large doses. This is what you will have to be competing with." He broke the stupid look, and laughed. Oh man. It was getting to that time of night where everything had the potential to be funny. It was late, and he wouldn't put it past Ethan to send the authority figures out to look for him, if he started to worry. Still, Julian didn't care. The was the first truly alone time he has had with Fia. "We don't have to race, but how about a flight?" He asked. |

Some girls laughed in giggles or chuckles, or soft sounds that didn't really sound like laughter. Fia's laugh was open, warm and slightly infectious. Joy to Sofia was like a like a hot mug of tea in the dead of winter - necessary and meant to be shared. When she was happy, she wanted the whole world to be happy. That's the way that joy should be shared. Julian made the laugh with his silly faces, and she shook her head, unable to take him seriously with his 'sexy face'. "Oh, I fear the competition," Fia quipped, dramatically placing a hand on her forehead in a pretend faint. Glancing across to where the mansion stood, Fia saw that some of the building's lights were still on. No doubt some of the staff were still awake, and she didn't want them to get caught out so late after curfew. "Maybe a quick one, and then we should really go back inside.” Smiling, she naturally lifted up a few inches into the air and ducked out of the gazebo before going higher. She didn’t put it above any of the teachers to come out looking for them soon - there were telepaths in that school, after all, and precogs. Regardless of the threat of trouble looming, the lure of soaring across the night sky was too attractive to give up. To Fia, being as in love with flying as she was, it was one of the hardest things to say no to. Leaving Julian to catch up, she took to the air, the wind rushing past her as she gained height. Closer and closer to the stars she went, above the line of trees, until she was against the canvas of the sky. Her thoughts were frivolous and flighty, filled with fru-fru sentiments that she wouldn’t normally have. It was early days yet, and the addition of the stars, the wishes, the promises, all made her see her new life from behind a set of rose-coloured glasses. If if things didn’t turn out perfect, at least she had tonight. Looping in mid-air, she hovered for a moment, then glanced to see that Julian was okay. Flying would perhaps become second nature for them both if this continued. The wind carried her easily, and she tried not to let it affect Julian’s telekinesis. Narrowing her reach, she drifted slowly then said, ‘To the lake, and then the dorms?’ Though she spoke in a normal tone, the sound travelled easily to Julian in the wind - shouting would simply be stupid this late at night. And her powers would help them converse, even at a lower volume. |

Even after Fia lifted into the air and flew into the night, Julian was reflecting on her laugh. He could only describe it as adorable. Fia laughs, and the world laughs with her. He made it is life's goal right then, to always try and make her laugh. As Fia had pointed out their very first time meeting, Julian's mode of flight was not the most stealthy. His TK always created an aura of green light around himself and anything he is using his powers on. When he was still in Beverly Hills and experimenting with his powers on his own, he tried to consciously stop the light from coming. He only really succeeded in giving himself a headache. One time he tried to will the light to at least be dimmer. He thought it was working, and then he realized his skin was starting to hurt. He had just turned his TK inward instead of outward. He was pretty soar for a few solid weeks after that. He ventured a look at the school. Only a few lights on. Someone would have to be looking out the window right at this very minute to see his green glow. What were the odds? "Well, here goes" he whispered to himself, then he flew out of the gazebo to catch up with Fia. "To the lake, and then the dorms?" her soft voice came to him as if she were right next to him. It was a little odd, like ventriloquism. Man, between having a roommate, telepaths, and people who can hear your slightest whispers it was going to be hard to get any privacy in this school. How was he ever going to keep up on his guilty little and potentially embarrassing pleasures? Looks like he would have to lay off the prime time teenage smut shows and Monday night pro-wrestling. "That sounds perfect." he said quietly with a smile. He knew the sound of his voice would get to her. "Let's hope the faculty is looking the other way." In this dark he was like a traffic light set on go. All the grounds below him, and each tree he passed was illuminated by his energy. He caught up to be by Fia's side. He had to tweek his TK a little to compensate for the powerful wind, and remain stable, but it was no problem. He rolled and sailed along on his back like floating in water, so that he could look up at the stars as he coasted. Of course this meant he couldn't see where he was going, but that seemed to be the reoccurring theme of this night anyway, not being able to see what was coming. He looked for familiar patterns. "Looks, the big dipper." he pointed. It was the easiest of all constellations, to find. |

The green glow shone like a beacon in the dark, and Fia briefly rolled her eyes. She had convieniently forgotten that he shone like a flashlight and in this late night sojourn, it would be no surprise if someone was attracted to the light and decided to investigate. She could only pray that it was not one of her instructors, or worse, Mr Summers. Groaning inwardly, she reflected that they had snuck out, dug out the grass, and were not swooping around the school. The line they shouldn't have crossed was so far behind them they couldn't even see it anymore. And it was just the second week for the both of them. Sofia didn't think they were going to make it a habit, but foresight told her this wouldn't be the last time she was in this situation. Not with Julian around, at least. The stars showed the constellations clearly, and Fia turned on her back too when Julian pointed out the Big Dipper. She said nothing, but marvelled at nature's wonders, naturally extending her powers and using the wind to guide them both. Julian's telekinesis was like a soft sponge to her senses, and she only needed to nudge lightly so they moved in the same direction. Still looking upwards and gliding on their backs, Sofia took her time in floating, until she heard a door slam in the distance. She knew it was actually softer than it sounded in her ears, with her senses attuned, but it flagged up as a warning sign for her. It meant someone was walking around in the school, or the dorms, and it would not be too far a cry for them pass a window and spot Julian's green glow. "I think we should go," she said to him, abruptly stopping to listen for any other sounds. Briefly, she contemplated flying the both of them back, but she had no confidence in levitating someone else, especially since Julian was much taller than she was. "Someone's still awake, and I'm not willing to bet it's not the headmaster." |

"Don't worry about that door, it was me telling someone much more grumpy than I am that I'd take a look around. You two make a good UFO." She foleded her arms, looking up at them. "Get down here. Now." Dazzler let the lights swell around her, two very brilliant, bright orbs of sheer luster. Beside her, a mechanical cat that one wouldn't know to be so unless they were already privy to that information. It was an impressive little creature, and she hesitated to call it a machine. Network, its master, if it had one, was skilled, and though she hadn't met the young woman past a few passing instances, she looked forward to working with her. "I mean, I know I'm new, but I'm pretty sure curfew's a curfew. Unless one of the two of you have a note from a staff member saying why exactly you're out... canoodling... at just about ten o'clock at night." The lights followed her and the cat towards the two of them. Dazzler didn't need the light. The landscaping's paltry night-time illumination was all she needed to see as well as anyone could in broad daylight. It gave a sort of glow to her eye, though it was subtle. No, they were shock and awe, meant to produce a sort of stunning moment that would keep the two relatively powerful teens from bolting. She'd used it on terrorists before, and crazy paparazzi, though to a much greater degree than she was doing here. This was just to induce some deer-in-the-headlight moments of pause, not outright blind or stun anyone. "I mean it, get down here. I can't fly but my friend here can." Could the cat fly? She didn't know. She assumed everyone but her could at this school. Her boot tapped against the cement walking path that serpented its way around the ground, and the dim orange lamplight was all but overtaken by her own splendid brilliance. |

"Get down here. Now." No sooner had Fia announced that there was a door sound, then they were being blinded by a bright light from the grounds. Oh man, they were so busted. Julian briefly considered what kind of punishment would be awaiting them now. Running didn't even cross his mind, where would they even run to? Was it bad that being caught kind of made him want to laugh. So they were breaking the rules, that was not in dispute. He was hoping that since there was no harm done, they would get off with a slap on the wrist. "I mean it, get down here. I can't fly but my friend here can." Huh. So forceful. Julian felt bad bout getting Fia in trouble with him. He slowly lowered himself down, and made sure Fia got down alright as well. He was a little concerned about the supposedly flying cheetah that the faculty member had with her. Did animals have mutant powers too now? He kept his TK handy in case that thing decided to attack. Was he supposed to put his hands up? What was the protocol here? He did anyway, just in case. "I can explain. I'm really, really sorry. " Julian squinted in the light. After so much time in the night, the light seemed even brighter. Was this woman holding a 100 watt flashlight or what? "I was out after curfew, Fia just came out to try and get me to get back in." He just had a horrible thought, what if they called his parents? Julian's Father would be furious. Oh well, it was too late now. All that was left was to face the music... speaking of music, there was something familiar about the voice behind the light. He couldn't quite place it. |

Getting in trouble this early in her time here was not how Fia envisioned things to go. Although she supposed she should have seen it coming. Night time strolls with a boy who had zero stealth capabilities? That spoke heaps. Also she was stupid not to think that in a house full of empowered teenage mutants, that staff didn't have additional measures to keep things in line. The... Cat would have been one of them. At least the cat had more stealth than you, Julian. she thought drily. The two orbs that had pierced their eyes levelled with them, making the fact that they were still hovering in mid-air painfully obvious. And also, the entire school would be able to see this green and white glow casted about the grounds. Fia, in her oversized teeshirt, shorts, barefoot and untamed hair, knew exactly how it looked. Canoodling, as the teacher (of course she's a teacher!) put it, was not part of her night time plans. She flushed beetroot, which again, was painfully obvious in the night. "Someone more grumpy than you?" she echoed weakly, air sweeping beneath her to lower quickly to the grass. Not even looking at Julian, she reached out with her powers to see that he did not even think of rebelling, nudging his TK waves with her aerokinesis to pull him to the ground. "Uhm..." she hedged, looking at the statuesque woman, with her arms crossed, her eyes hard, and the spotlights burning in the dark. Shit. There was no conceivable way out of this, and to be honest, she didn't know exactly how strict the curfew was, or what would happen if they got caught. She didn't even think they would get caught. Which on hindsight. Put it this way, you didn't think at all, she berated herself inwardly. "We're sorry," she apologised, repeating what Julian had said. "And we did stay out for a while after that, but we really didn't mean to cause any trouble," she added, not wanting to lie and then have to explain why they didn't go straight back in after she came out to get Julian. |

As the two descended, excuses and butwhats in tow, the orbs followed, and once the two children touched down, the orbs drifted away towards Dazzler herself, before the reached behind her, backlighting her as she stepped forward, leering between the two of them. "Half the school was eyeballing you two, you know. Ricky Standen is currently spreading rumors about Skrull invasions, also, Wolverine was gonna come out here to scope it out. I found him first. You're both welcome." That guy was scary. She tried to make herself scary. It maybe worked, she thought. "You know it wasn't more than a couple years back in quiet days like this Scott got attacked while he was out enjoying a night-cap jog." Her eyes were focused on Julian, not Sofia. "You think you're invincible, Mr. Keller The lights died out, and they were returned to the relatively tame glow of the walkway's lamplight. Their eyes would need to adjust, sure, but hers were, again, fine. "I know what its like to be young, Mr. Keller, and to want to do your own thing. You think you have crazy powers so you can improvise yourself out of any bad situation, you don't even give it a second thought. But its important to realize that with a bigger life, which everyone at this school has, come bigger threats. The curfew's a safety thing, not a buzzkill thing." She looked then to Sofia. "And I understand wanting to help a fellow student keep out of trouble, but you should have come to a teacher. I know it's not the cool thing to do, but we need to know about things like this, otherwise its way easy for us to get caught with our pants down." She turned back to Julian, then. "And I respect your honesty in trying to excuse Miss Mantega, but the fact is that you're both out after curfew, you're both breaking a very important rule." Dazzler stuffed her hands in the pocket of her jean jacket. She hardly looked as imposing as she might have sounded, outfitted in pajama pants and a cami. "So Mr. Keller, any particular reasons you needed to be out here tonight?" |

Oh geez. Julian hadn't even thought about looking like a UFO, especially with the whole Skrull thing in the not so distant past. He just thought it was some harmless chance to take a breath. He never meant to actually cause panic. "...Wolverine was gonna come out here to scope it out. I found him first. You're both welcome." Julian stumbled out a very sincere "thank you." he could only imagine if it had been Logan standing with them right now. He listened to every word she said, and to the point she was right. Julian was going to have to change his mindset. Maybe he did have a bit of a chip on his shoulder. He was used to doing what he wanted, when he wanted, but now he finds himself in a life where apparently that can get people, well... killed. Then suddenly everything faded to quiet as his brain realized where he knew the voice from. As if to confirm it, his eyes finished adjusting, and the female silhouette cleared to a face. Was he getting busted by The Dazzler?! It was like time slowed down and everything became sparkly. His mind immediately started playing her last hit single. Julian's imagination ran wild where they were suddenly in a music video with Dazzler singing from a hundred different up close angles, casting himself as the male lead of course, and even the mother effing Cheetah in a diamond collar. There were pyrotechnics and trademark Dazzler laser shows. It was all leather and lace. It was hardcore. "So Mr. Keller, any particular reasons you needed to be out here tonight?" Julian snapped out of the stars that struck him. The music was over, and he was just standing on the grounds still, with a very disapproving celebrity. "Uh... well, I..." did he really want to get into the life problems that lead to his Insomnia? Truth be told, it would no make for a satisfactory reason to break the rules anyway. He looked at Fia with a reassuring smile. "Sorry," he whispered to her "I couldn't sleep and didn't want to bother my roommate. I thought a walk would help." Half truths, they were better than lies. "And Fia was just trying to help. Really." "And this might be in poor taste, given the rule breaking and all, but could I get an autograph? Seriously, your music is amazing. How do you come up with those lyrics? Not that I am asking about your process, because I know artists are touchy about that." Yeah, he was rambling. He couldn't stop himself. It was the freaking DAZZLER. One thing was clear, he was not going to be able to charm his way out of this one. She was onto that racket. |

Wolverine With the claws and the beard and the cigar and the violence? Fia suppressed a shudder. The man struck fear into the depths of her beating heart. The same heart that would have probably stopped beating if it was him instead of.. She turned and her jaw dropped, eyes darting between Julian and their teacher. Dazzler?! Fia would have to be blind, deaf and dumb to not know who she was. Dazzler... Miss Blaire... was speaking to her about curfews and danger and getting caught with their pants down, and all Sofia could do was nod. Truth was, she didn't even think it was dangerous. She thought it would just be nice to go out and have a walk with Julian, and then sprinklers, and then the gazebo, and then the pact and the shooting star... It was just dreamy. Fia didn't think about the dark, dangerous world, or rules, or scary Wolverine, or stoic Mr Summers. And she certainly didn't expect the Dazzler. Julian spoke and she looked up and met his eyes. He smiled at her, and whispered apologetically, and she melted. The silly boy was trying to keep her out of it. There it was, there was the protective guy without the princely attitude. Fia didn't even notice that she was shifting closer to he was, as if standing together would present a solid front. If they were to be punished, they should be punished together - she wouldn't let Julian take the fall for an evening they both snuck out on. "And I agreed to stay out, so it's partly me too," she spoke up. And then Julian blurted out about something about an autograph, and Fia dropped her head, her long hair shielding her grin from the teacher. Of all the times, Julian! Of all the times! Couldn't he ask later? Or the next day? Her friend really had the best timing. Sofia bit down on her lip to keep from laughing aloud, but couldn't stop her shoulders from shaking slightly at the effort to keep her amusement to herself. |

Students seemed to have trouble accepting the fact that, after her concert, she'd stuck on as a music instructor here at the school. Every time she ran into a few new faces it seemed at least one of them was a fan, and she wondered how all this translated to a thirty slot drop in the charts and record sales that had somehow wound up in the toilet. Ah, well. "Not the time or the place, Mr. Keller, but you know, maybe, if you stop sneaking out at night." She was fairly surprised that Keller was a fan, to the point where she wondered if he was being sincere or mocking by asking. Ultimately, she decided it was too late and she was too tired to not give him the benefit of the doubt, having only just met him and having an entire season of Kitchen Nightmares to catch up on. She waved them both over with a hand. "There'll be plenty of time for you to ponder my lyrical methodology while you lie in bed, Julian." She half smirked. "I just write what comes to me. Now come on." She motioned for them to head back towards the Institute and followed after. "This is my first week, and your first time being caught as far as I know, so I'm going to let you off with a verbal warning, both of you. But make no mistakes, this is a warning, and you only get one. Curfew is curfew, and danger is danger, and it hides in freaky places that you don't expect it to, especially when you're like us." She stopped at the foot of a flight of steps that moved up towards an entryway into the school, looking between the two of them. "I know not everyone comes here wanting to be part of a school full of mutants. Its sort of embarassing, because you might feel like you're not trusted because of what you can do, but realize that as many of us as there are, and as powerful as some of us are, we're still the minority in this world and there are people and things that we terrify. I don't know if you're here just to learn, or if you plan on joining Cyclops and the X-Men once your older, but you have to have some respect, not only for the ground rules here but for the people who put themselves out there to make sure you don't have to worry so much about hooded figures in the dark." Her eyes passed between them both again. "It's Wednesday night. I want a page, single spaced by Friday afternoon on why this was a bad idea. That fair?" |

"There'll be plenty of time for you to ponder my lyrical methodology while you lie in bed, Julian." Julian couldn't believe it. He was five feet away from THE Alison Blaire, the Dazzler. Not only that, but she knows his name. If she only knew she used to tell people she was his girlfriend, and said good night to her poster every night. The thought of it now made him want to laugh. As they walked back to the school, he listened to the rock star empathize about being outcasts as mutants, and the challenges of keeping themselves safe. He really hadn't concerned any of that when he started out of the school this night. Really, he just wanted a breath to get a grip on the stress of his life's recent changes. Completely innocent. He looked over at Fia, to make sure she was okay. He was pretty sure she came out here to get her bearing as well, whether she got around to admitting it or not. The girl had depth that he knows he hasn't even begun to scratch. She is sweet, but shows you want she wants you to see. They reached the stairs to the school. "It's Wednesday night. I want a page, single spaced by Friday afternoon on why this was a bad idea. That fair?" What? But it was summer. He really wanted to argue, but he decided it really was fair, and they would still be getting off easily, especially compared to if it really had been Wolverine that came out here this evening. Wait till Ethan hears that Julian got busted for being out after curfew, and that he got Fia caught up in it too. "Yes Miss. Blaire. Good night." he said. He smiled at Dazzler. Whatever she taught here at the school, he would definitely be taking. There was a slight pause. Clearly they were now expected to head up the stairs and back to their dorm rooms. The evening was at it's end. He turned back to Fia real quick. "Thank you, for listening." He said softly to her in a sincerely grateful tone. He knew she would hear it. He reached out and took her hand. He gave it a quick, reassuring squeeze, before he turned and headed up the stairs. |

Ms Blaire hit the figurative nail on the head. And it was exactly what Rahne was saying just a few days ago. It did seem that the teachers at the institute sang the same tune, and Fia found she agreed. Their world was dangerous for them - and though they were in school, a facility that was meant to protect them, it didn't mean that they were 100% safe. After all, wasn't her own enrolment delayed due to the attacks on campus? She didn't consider those factors, and was abashed to think that she and Julian had caused such a ruckus this early in their stay here. Dazzler was right. Guilt flooded her mind as she imagined kids looking out the window and thinking something bad was happening, when in fact, it was just Julian's TK glowing in the night. If things had been different, and if teachers weren't as experienced, they might have been shot out of the sky, or commandeered telepathically by Ms Frost or Ms Grey... Or Wolverine could have come out and attacked them. Whatever it was, Sofia would not be breaking curfew anytime soon. The consequences were more dangerous than she thought. That said, she wasn't too pleased with the fact they had to do an assignment - punishment - in the Summer. Everyone had said that classes started only in the fall, and Sofia had prepared herself mentally to deal with actual work then. But an essay now? Urgh. Still an essay was better than detention with Wolverine or Mr Summers (or anyone at all, for that matter), and she nodded meekly. Looks like she would be hitting the library rather earlier than expected. "Yes, Ms Blaire," she replied softly, then followed Julian up the stairs to their dorms. He reached for her hand quickly, and she looked up with a smile. "Anytime. I'll see you at breakfast. Sweet dreams." As they reached the landing where Julian shared a room with Ethan, Fia took the last few steps, then flew upwards to her bedroom. -thread end! :)- |
