Fia and Young Scott from Hero is a Verb

Fia chuckled. As a couple, she and Julian were pretty steady despite their loud, passionate fights. People, staff and students, had gotten used (or at least no one said anything) to their continued presence together. Fia liked to think that even though they were boyfriend and girlfriend, and both intended to be more to each other, they weren't a couple that were clingy and needy and joined at the hip. It wasn't new to see them together with friends, spending time in the rec room, but it was equally unsurprising for Fia to go out without her boyfriend. They both had lives to lead, sometimes separately.

"He's not going to come in and kick your ass," she said with a soft laugh. "He's gotten used to it, honestly. I give out hugs like they are free."

Fia lifted her legs up to the bench and hugged her knees to herself, looking out a the murky green waters. The ship rocked side to side; if the situation was less stressful, she would have bee lulled into a comfortable sleep.

"He's hell cool," she commented. "I mean look at this ship. It's beautiful." Fia slid a gentle hand along the walls, before turning to Scotty with a smile.

"You know, we can't choose our family, sometimes we can't even choose our friends. But it's times when the come to help, with unconditional support, that's precious. You didn't hear what Hepzibah said to Franklin earlier -- she was threatening him, but said she wouldn't do anything because he made Rachel happy... I mean I don't think she'd really hurt him, but the sentiment is there. Family's family, Scott. He's happy to see you. Maybe this doesn't seem like the best time for a reunion, but it's better than no reunion at all right?"

"It's not just that he's alive," Scott muttered, not looking at the girl, "It's not even that he's a pirate, which I don't know, that sounds like a criminal to me, and I'm going not even going to start trying to wrap my mind around that. I mean he's in the military... he was..." Scott shook his head and said, quietly, "I don't know what's wrong with me."

Outside the portal, the relatively filthy water of New York Harbor began to be replaced by the cleaner slip streams of the ocean, and Scott slumped forward, hands clasped loosely between his knees, head hunched in so far he was practically a turtle. "Fia, I want to be what you guys think I am going to be, but... I don't like being told what I am. I don't like being bent and crammed into a particular shape, forced to be something I don't believe I am." Not lifting his head, he nonetheless turned his face towards her and said, "Every thing I thought about myself has changed in a really short time. I'm not human. I'm a danger to myself and others. The girl I like, the job I want, the family I mourned are all different then I thought they were... Everything I am... is wrong."

This teenager was going to be a man someday who stood in the face of world ending catastrophe and not blink. But right now, he was a boy who had spent half of his life being tossed around like a rock in a tumbler. Either he was going to come out of it a perfectly polished gemstone, or he was going to shatter into usable dust.

He was still too young to know which would happen.

He was still too flawed to know which one he wanted to happen.

"Why do you follow him? Why do you trust him?" Scotty asked Fia, "How do I learn how to make you all believe in me, when I sure haven't ever believed in myself?"

She stayed quiet while he spoke, intently listening. Sometimes people just needed to get things off their chest, and as a friend, well, she was happy to listen.

"You know my mom was a dancer," she said once the silence lapsed between them. "My mom thought she was going to be famous, and if she hadn't gotten pregnant, she probably would have. When she had me, her family disowned her, and my father... Well he didn't care." Fia kept her tone light, not looking at Scott but instead made her gaze stay on the waters beyond.

"I was going to be a dancer too. I'm good Scotty. I could have gotten into the world's best programmes..." She leant her head against the side of the alcove, turning her eyes to study the other teen's profile. "Then I came here, and on my second day, Rahne, Mrs Russell had a talk with me."

"She told me that I don't have to be anything I don't want to be. I don't have to be a fighter, a teacher, a leader, but for my safety and for those around me, I have to learn how to defend myself, and people who can't defend themselves. I have to help them, because I can."

Her next words, she considered carefully. "I believe in fate, and I believe in things happening for a reason. I believe that everyone changes as they go through things in life that influence them, meet people who impact them and teach them. I'm not the girl I was two months ago, let alone two years, or ten. We change, whether we like it or not, and sometimes..."

Fia took a deep breath, and continued with courage she didn't know she had, "I follow him, because he believes I can be better, because I can be more, because he thinks I serve a purpose."

"Scotty, I haven't had that in a long time. I haven't had someone think better of me, or even care if what I did was right or wrong. He sees potential in me to be good, and it's a kind of faith, a kind of trust, that inspires me to be more... I don't want to betray that trust, I don't want to let him down."

"It's not a question of us believing in him. It's a question of him believing in us. What have I done to deserve his trust? Nothing. But it's a vision, of the future, a kind of... Will, I guess, to form the future he sees. One of strength, and peace, one of independence... I trust him, because he's family, you're family. Julian and I are almost orphans, but we chose this family," Fia shifted, absently twisting a lock of her hair.

"Honestly, I don't think you should rush into being "him". Like I said, I'm still changing, and I think you are too. Who knows where I'll be in 20 years, maybe I'll be a teacher, fighting alongside you, or maybe I'll be a mother with three children, or maybe I'll be traveling the world..."

"Things are going to happen from now until the time you're forty. Let them happen, I mean, what's the worse that could happen, death?" She smirked now, "come on, we've seen death so many times, he should be afraid of us."
