Aboard the Starjammer

The ship wasn’t big enough to lose herself in completely, even if she hadn’t been able to communicate with it for directions. But it allowed some privacy, and the trip itself was going to take long enough that they would all come to appreciate the privacy. It had taken a few days to orient to the sensation of being underwater again, and she was pretty sure Fia had the same concerns. She’d given everyone a few days to get their sea legs, before arranging this meeting. Of the group, with the exception of Illyana, who had yet to fully earn Sarah’s trust in the matter, Fia and Julian were the least experienced. They were also the ones who knew the least about the prior visit Scott and Jean had made to this time. And she could tell how curious they both were about the younger versions of their teachers.

This meeting was for them, really. To learn more about the situation, other than the briefings. To ask questions and find out more about Scott and Jean’s younger selves. She’d let all four of them know about the meeting a few hours ago – there was no timeline, no urgent need to rush into it. The ‘Jammer was moving smoothly and swiftly, a joyous feeling coming from the ship as Sarah trailed her fingers along the wall. She could admit to hoping she’d have time to talk to Hepzibah and Corsair during the trip, having liked the first impression she’d gotten from them, even if she hadn’t known their connection to Scott.

Loaded down with a tray of sandwiches and bottles of water and juice, Sarah made her way to the meeting room, thankful for the ship’s directions, absently chatting with it. Mostly silently, but on occasion with a quiet mutter out load, oblivious to whether anyone was around to notice her talking to seemingly no one. Spreading the food out on the table to set up, she glanced up as a wall slowly smoothed into a clear viewing area, showing the ocean outside. Smiling, the technopath pulled her tablet over as she sat down, pulling up a map to see their progress, and flipping through a few notes.

Despite calling it a ‘meeting’, it really wasn’t anything formal. A lunch, more or less, for the four to get more acquainted with each other. She wasn’t even in uniform, dressed more comfortably in a pair of black cargo shorts and an army green tank top. Other than the backpack that she almost constantly carried, and her usual combat boots, she might as well have been on vacation. And if the situation wasn’t so damn dire, she probably could have really enjoyed herself on board the sentient vessel, wandering endlessly and exploring until the crew kicked her out of the way. Then again, she had to admit to being tempted to ask Hepzibah if she could help with the engines, just to see them. Scott’s idea from the other day had planted the seed, the desire to snoop around and learn more about the ship’s workings. Maybe later, if there was time. For now, she’d enjoy her sandwich while she waited for everyone else to arrive.

He was only slightly lost. This vessel was large enough that he did not yet have the full scope of it in his head, but Julian was pretty sure he was going to the right place.

The urge to stay in X-Uniform lasted all of one day. As soon as Julian realized it was going to take days to get to their destination, he felt that the skin tight black and yellow was a bit over the top. He was starting to understand that this mission was unique among missions, seeing as how the destination was so far and secluded. He had to admit, he still did not feel he knew a lot of what was going on here. There was history here, that is for sure. One thing that the Telekinetic was aware of, were the stakes. Still, when Network told him about today's casual meeting, he was more than happy to attend. 4 days, and he still wasn't sure he has had a full conversation with either of his teenage would-be headmasters.

Hellion thought about how Sarah was turning out to be a rather impressive leader. He only began working with Legacy Squad when this mission came up, but she quickly gained his respect. The Technopath's leadership style reminded him a lot of Mr. Summers. The adult Mr. Summers that is. The man has obviously had an effect on her.

If they weren't sailing toward undefined danger, Julian might really enjoy this trip. He had been on multiple cruises with his family, to the Caribbean or Alaska. The cruise liners were basically floating hotels. They were much larger, more luxurious, and had better meals but the Star Jammer was not without it's charms. This creature was actually a very smooth sail and it was unique enough to keep Julian marveling. It seemed like every day, something new and amazing was discovered about the vessel. Still, he did miss the formal dining hall, especially when he entered the designated meeting room to find a plate full of sandwiches. The teen had to remind himself that this was not a pleasure cruise.

"Oh good. Sandwiches.... again," he said. Julian really was hungry, so he was actually half-glad to see the food. He crossed to the table and took a seat. Three weeks ago if someone had told him that he was going to be hanging out with real pirates aboard a living ship, eating sandwiches with his time traveling teenage headmaster, Julian probably would have laughed in their face. He really needed to start expecting the unexpected if he were going to keep pursuing a career as an X-Man.

Pop-quiz, Hotshot, you’re a telepath with only moderate control of your powers even at the best of times, you killed a facsimile of your boyfriend and the aforementioned boyfriend is still in the murderous clutches of a century old psycho, and as the cherry on the top of this crap-sundae, you’re trapped in a tin can with nearly a dozen other people; their minds constantly chattering at you, whether you want to hear them or not. What’s the likely that your control will slip and you will “hear” private conversations not meant for you? Answer: very high likelihood.

Jean made her way into the lunch meeting that Sarah had setup for four of them and briefly wondered about the others. Perhaps they were busy doing something else. Or maybe it was decided that too many, all talking at the same time, was just too much and nothing would get done. Whatever the reason, it didn’t really concern her - she and Scott were just visitors passing through.

“Hi Sarah,” she said as she entered the room, grey and drab as yesterday’s dishwater. “Hey, Julian… right?” she offered him a weak smile but at least it was something.

She looked at the food Sarah had managed to find. “Nice spread,” she complimented but didn’t take any; her appetite had gone days and days ago, and would probably stay gone until they had Warren back, safe and sound.

"You should probably head out to your lunch, Scott," Corsair said to his son, glancing out of the corner of his eyes at the boy who slouched on one of the cargo crates bonded to the 'Jammer's deck.

Scott didn't move from where he sat, staring out of the portal at the sea beyond. They had gone under again, to travel faster, but the boy really wasn't all that interested in the ocean. He wanted the sky, not the sea, and he knew some day he would have it. But today wasn't that day, and there was a lot that weighed him down. "I'll go," he said, quietly.

Corsair looked up from where he was working, and realized that he was required here, to do what he was never able to do before, what he never got the chance to do before. "Hey, Champ," Christ said, crossing the room, "What's up?"

Scott shrugged, "Nothing," he muttered.

The pirate smirked, and plopped down next to the teenager, "You sure about that?" He slung his arm around his son's bony shoulders and said, "I'm your dad. Maybe not a great one. But I'm pretty sure I can tell when something's wrong. You're seventeen, and even though you are clearly not living the average seventeen year old's life, I am pretty sure that your problem is female in nature"

Pulling away, Scott said, "I've got a lot more to worry about than a girl, Dad..." But his red cheeks showed that Corsair had hit close to home, "I'm trying to save my best friend, I'm trying to save the X-Men.... It's not about a girl..."

With a knowing look, Chris smiled and said, "No, I think it's two girls."

Scott shot to his feet, "It's not," he protested, a bit too much methinks, and he said, "I'll go to lunch." He slumped towards the door.

"Scotty," Chris called. The teenager stopped at the door and turned back to look at his father, "Don't slouch," he advised, "You're a good looking boy, take after your dad. You can handle this, kiddo. I promise."

Straightening his shoulders, Scott said, "Thanks, Dad."

A few minutes later, he peered into the room where the others had already begun to gather, "Hey," he said, lifting his hand in greeting. Scott crossed over to where Jean was, casting a sheepish glance over at Sarah, and then, as he looked over the selection of sandwiches, he found one in particular, handing it to Jean, "Here," he said, quietly, "Cucumber. I know that's one that you like." Scott held it out to her, waiting for her to take it, patiently. "You haven't eaten much in days, and you... you need to keep up your strength."

He purposely kept his thoughts on the food, on the sandwich, forcibly pushing the other thoughts to the back of his head... thoughts about what shouldn't ever happen, what shouldn't ever be thought about. "Please, Jean," he said, "Warren will think I've been letting you starve."

During the voyage, Fia had been intermittently sea-sick, as well as enjoying the ride. Each time they broke the surface, it was like she had a new life. She spent as much time as possible on the decks, getting her bearings and making sure she wasn't falling behind with her control. While she wasn't any weaker for being indoors, there was a distance between her and the element she controlled that threw her a little off her game. The 'jammer had dipped once more into the depths of the oceans, and Fia had clung on until her systems re-calibrated.

There was no doubt about it. With each passing day, passing hour, she was more and more nervous about what they were about to face. If they remained in the ocean... How much of a help would she be? She had no advantage, not when the only air particles available were those in the vacuum of their own survival...

Ironically, showers had made her feel better -- likely because of the O2 particles within the water. She emerged from the shower, her hair damp and stringy, with five minutes to spare before her lunch with Sarah and the younger crew. Including the time-travelling counterparts of their headmasters.

She had already gotten over the initial star-struck sense of being a student chosen to go on this mission; her mind was occupied with their eventual survival... If they would survive. If not, well this was as good a cause as any to go out on. Fia got dressed in fitted yoga pants, a long sleeved top and sneakers, then made her way through the belly of the ship to their meeting place. By the time she got there, her hair had fallen into its usual wind-blown locks.

"At least there's food," she retorted to Julian's comment about the sandwiches being a repeat meal. "And you're not required to go haul in some crabs from outside.

She didn't sit immediately, instead came to stand behind Julian, placing her hands gently on his shoulders. Him being here, with her, was a reassurance she held on to. "Thanks for getting lunch, Sarah," she said with a grin, before sliding in next to Julian.

Sarah had always been one who could easily find her sea legs. Despite a lot of people not realizing it, Sarah loved the sea. She grew up surfing and sailing, and even though she loved her video games and tech, she’d been outdoorsy to a point. Of course, that meant that she had to keep reminding herself that not everyone found it as comfortable as she did, being on a deep sea vessel. Fia, especially, seemed to be having some difficulty recalibrating, each time they sank back down. Slowly, the others began filtering in, and Sarah greeted each with a smile – and a roll of her eyes for Julian.

Not that she didn’t understand how boring sandwiches could be, but still. He still ate it, and she turned to give Jean a concerned smile. Jean looked…Worn. Tired. Drained of enthusiasm, although whether it was from the nature of the mission, or the fact that she was a telepath in a ship full of people with questionable thoughts, Sarah couldn’t be sure. But just in case, she’d managed to keep the mental box within her mind firewalled up, save within the confines of her mind, out of telepathic reach. Oh, Jean could almost definitely pry the box open if she wanted, but something told her the girl wasn’t all too interested in doing so.

Scott’s entrance received a smile, same as everyone else, and the light blush faded quickly. He sent her a sheepish look at going to Jean, but Sarah responded with a warm, encouraging smile. Steadfastly refusing to actively think about their discussion on deck, because his interaction with Jean here made it perfectly clear just how perfect the two of them were. He knew Jean. He cared. And Sarah had to fight not to smile at seeing him take care of Jean, full of concern.

Grinning at Fia as the girl immediately called Julian out, Sarah shook her head slightly, having a moment of feeling like the odd duck out, with Julian and Fia so close, and Scott and Jean so close. How weird. Shaking that incredibly strange thought out of her head, Sarah tugged her braid over one shoulder, looking around the room.

“So, since Fia and Julian weren’t part of this the first time around, I figure this is as good a time as any to…Well, explain what happened then.” She looked at Scott and Jean, motioning slightly. “Do you guys want to explain what happened to bring this on, in your time?” She felt like a bit of an ass for bringing it up, shifting uncomfortably in her chair, but Fia and Julian needed to know. It was pretty definite that they’d have questions, so this group discussion would hopefully be easier. And she had no intention of reiterating the parts the two of them already knew – namely, the fake Warren’s death, as she already knew just how hard an impact that had on Jean.

Jean and Scott JP

Jean watched Scott as he joined them, and to her eye, he looked a little uneasy, almost guilty. Or maybe she only thought that because of the snippets of conversation that she knew, that she wasn’t supposed to know. He pushed her to eat.

“Bringing War into this, eh? Not fair, Scottie,” she said, but reached for a plate and sandwich, telling herself that having it in front of her and picking at it might be enough for Scottie. Maybe he’d forget all about it.

Scott smiled, slightly, and Jean might not actually know this yet, but even with all his confusion, his worry and concern over what seemed to be an impossible future... this smile, this one small smile... it was his smile for her. There once was a time when he smiled a lot, laughed, played, and that had all vanished when he slept in a hospital bed for over a year. And, while he had smiled and even managed to joke with Sarah, while he was more comfortable with her than he had ever been with anyone else... but this smile, this was the one that he reserved for Jean and only Jean.

"Well," he said, his young voice not the even timbre it would someday become, "Would you eat because I asked you to? Alls fair in love and cucumber sandwiches."

Jean snorted then sent him a squinty-eyed look. “Cucumber sandwiches is cheating,” she told him but started picking hers into small bite-sized pieces. “You know I’m just humoring you, right? And to save myself from an hour of badgering.”

"I don't badger," Scott said, shoulders hitching in an awkward slump. "I just want... The Professor asked me to make sure you were ok." He lowered his head, "I just want you to be ok."

He turned away from her, looking at the others who were coming in. This lunch/mixer/whatever was getting started, and Jean... he figured she really didn't want to talk to him when there were more interesting people around.

“I can’t talk to Jean, not like with you.”

Those might not have been his exact words, but it was the sentiment and it rang in her ears when Scottie suddenly pulled away… and looked away.

“Yeah,” she replied, her voice hollow and lifeless. “Why else….” The bread suddenly felt soggy to her touch. She ached for Warren, he would’ve said something funny, he would’ve smiled that million dollar grin, he would’ve put his arms around her and made everything seem alright. But… he wasn’t there, that was the point, the reason they were all there. Feeling the ache of his missing arms, Jean felt her eyes prickle as tears brimmed and threatened to fall.

“Why are we here?”

Scott was not and would never be good at reading other people's emotions. Their intentions, yes. Their strategies, absolutely. He heard the hitch in Jean's voice, and because he was who he was, because he was 17 years old, because he loved Jean more than anyone would ever truly know but simply could not believe she would ever love him back, he assumed that his mention of Warren had brought her to tears. Ducking his head, ashamed of himself, he wanted to hug her, hold her, and tell her that he loved her so much that he was going to save Warren just for her, so that she could be happy.

But, instead, he simply mumbled, "Sorry," and was relieved when Sarah asked them to explain what had happened.

"Um, well," he said, looking to Jean and realizing that she was not going to be up to explaining, "A few months ago, in our timeline, Warren disappeared. The Professor traced him to your time, and we came to get him. We rescued him and brought him home, but it wasn't him. It was some sort of cloned creature who killed Hank and tried to kill me... He was...taken care of and we came back here to find the real Warren.. Before he died he said a word, he said Sinister and Scott... your Scott knew who that was, so we're... we're going to find him, and stop him, and get our friend back. Then, we're going to go home and fix the future."

He glanced at Jean, and said, quietly, "That everything?"

He had specifically glossed over the harder bits of it. She didn't need everyone knowing about this.

Using Scott’s monologue to discreetly wipe away tears before they had a chance to fall, she sniffled once and then took a deep breath; immensely grateful that Scott had stepped forward and done the hard work. From what she’d learned about the man he would become, and what she knew about the young man she knew, that was Scott, stepping up and doing what had to be done. In the years to come that quality would come to mean more than the enjoyment and carefree fun that Warren represented; that was in the future, but today, she appreciated her serious young Scottie.

Jean nodded, “That’s… that’s about it.” She said and in an undertone added for Scottie, “Thanks.”

Julian and Fia JP

Julian had to remind himself that these teens were not together like their adult versions. Jeannie was Warren’s girlfriend. Scotty’s move with the cucumber sandwich seemed a bit more than just the concern of a friend or teammate. At first, Julian found it odd that Jeannie was still dating Warren, since she knew that they end up together. Then again, if someone told him he wouldn't end up with Fia, he wouldn't let it change anything. He would still love Fia. The whole idea of time travel made his head hurt.

Speaking of his girlfriend, the beautiful Wind Dancer entered. "At least there's food."

Just the sight of her made him smile. “Hi there Beautiful. How are you feeling?” Ever since coming aboard the Starjammer, Fia has had some issues adjusting to the air and the sea movement.

“Had a bit of a headache when the ‘Jammer ducked down below again, but I’m better now. I think the O2 in the water helped, so I took another shower.” She was thankful for the ship’s creature comforts, and it afforded her a little bit more stability than she thought she lacked.

The trip so far had been a period of adjustment to be sure. Julian marveled at how much Fia had learned about living with her mutation. To be honest, Hellion was becoming more aware of how lucky he had been with his powers and level of control that came naturally. He only wished there was more he could do for her.

Sarah guided their conversation swiftly to what Julian and her would need to know, and Fia laced her fingers with her boyfriend’s as Scotty started the story.

Julian could tell how hard it was for Scotty to give the details, even now. Again, the events they were speaking of happened years ago from Fia and his perspectives, but to the time traveling teens it was still fresh in their minds. It would be so hard. Putting himself in their place, it would be like Fia turning out to be evil, and killing Ethan right in front of him. How would he recover from something like that? Julian could not even imagine. He squeezed Fia’s hand more tightly, as he resolved to do whatever he could to help Jeannie find her warren.

Truth was, the more of the story they told, the more worried Julian became. He read the X-Men files on Sinister before they left the school, or as much of it as there was. He was a monster that twisted and spliced and altered, and they were calmly sailing right into his lair. The boy’s eyes might have betrayed his concern, but right now he was feeling very sorry for Scotty and Jeannie. He would let Fia do the comforting. She was much better at the sensitive discussions.

“I’m sorry,” she said once it was obvious they were done, reaching her free hand to touch Jeannie’s arm. If it had been them in that position, and Julian had been taken… She didn’t even want to think of that. “How did you escape the second time? And do you know why this… impostor wouldn't just kill you all at that moment?” she asked, after exchanging a look with Julian.

He held Fia’s gaze for a moment. The young telekinetic had the same question, but a bad feeling about what the answer might be. You didn't have to be telepathic to know that it was hard for them to talk about it. “Mr. Worthington is special to all of us. We will do everything we can to get him back, Jean. Really.” Julian tried to give her a reassuring smile.
