He has been studying magic for over sixty years, and has undertaken a number of rituals to strengthen his innate physical and magical abilities over that time. While this does not give him power equal to a natural-born Sorceror Supreme such as Dr.Strange or the Ancient One, or to reality-shifting mutants like Wiccan or the Scarlet Witch, he is nevertheless a formidable force. Given time to prepare and a battle-ground of his choosing, he can hold his own against practically any force on Earth with a reasonable chance of victory. He has the following innate magical abilities/techniques, which do not require preparation: - Physical enhancement/martial arts: Mordo has trained extensively in bare-hand combat and simple weapons (swords, crossbows, staves, etc.), and is a formidable fighter even without enhancement. Additionally, he has undergone a number of rituals over the decades that make him stronger, faster, and more durable than an ordinary human. He's not bulletproof and can't bend steel with his bare hands, but he's superior to an Olympic athlete. Also, despite being nearly 70, he has the body of a young man. - Astral Projection: He can separate his spirit from his body, allowing him to travel around the planet at the speed of thought and avoid all but mystical senses. His physical body is helpless while he does this, and extended separation will weaken and eventually kill him. - Perceive magical/extradimensional/spiritual structures/events: Mordo can detect and analyze spells, magical beings, astral forms, demons, magical artifacts, dimensional anomalies, and similar phenomena. He does not have to be specifically looking, but is more likely to notice if he is. (Note: the relationship between interdimensional and magical phenomena is difficult to clearly describe. Not all magic is interdimensional, and not all interdimensional phenomena are magical, but there is a significant overlap.) - Manipulate magical/extradimensional structures: Within limits, Mordo can alter existing spells and artifacts to change how they function. This process takes time and study, and in some cases requires subverting system defenses, akin to rewriting programs in a foreign computer system. - Tap magical/extradimensional energy sources: Mordo's spirit can metabolize energy from magical and extradimensional sources to power his spells and abilities. - Force bolts/shields: Mordo can manifest magical energy offensively as magical bolts and defensively as shields. They affect both magical and mundane targets. They draw on, and are limited by, his available energy so he prefers not to rely on them (also, physical force is clumsy!), but can be formidable nevertheless. Without external augmentation he can project/deflect about ten meganewtons (the equivalent of a modern tank shell), but he can only do this once or twice before becoming completely exhausted. Lesser intensities produce less fatigue. The following spells do require preparation, but he usually has them ready to invoke: - Rings of Raggador: a defensive/binding spell. When fully completed, the spell renders its target/recipient effectively immune to all forms of attack, but also immobile and unable to attack. There are seven rings, each of which protects/binds a different kind of attack. The spell fades naturally over time and can be dispelled by the caster at will, but otherwise remains in place once cast without further attention. - Flames of the Faltine: a green magical fire of great destructive power that feeds and spreads on living beings and objects infused with magic, but does not interact with physical objects otherwise. Once invoked the Flames spread without further attention. - Mental Manipulation: a suite of spells to conjure illusions, read minds, compel behavior, project thoughts, alter memories, etc. These are not generalized abilities like a telepath has, but rather a variety of related specialized spells... for example, a spell to compel a target to reveal secrets, or to discern family history, or to remove memories of his presence, or induce fear, or communicate with allies, etc. They are typically short-range, capable of affecting a single target in his vicinity. Strong-willed targets can resist the effects. - Displacement: a spell that transports him and whatever he is carrying instantaneously to a desired location, anywhere on the surface of the Earth. This disorients him upon arrival, so is not suitable for appearing in mid-combat. - Conjure demons: Mordo usually has several minor demons bound to him, which he can release at will. They are not under his control, but they will typically attack his enemies when he releases them. Their power levels and abilities vary, but in general they are more useful for covering retreats or softening up opposition than as primary attackers. Once unbound, they complete their task and return to their home dimension. Mordo has access to an extensive magical library, so he can prepare other spells as the situation requires, given enough time to study. His grimoire includes divination spells, transformation spells, He also has access to a variety of special-purpose magic items, but these are not always available for use for various complicated mystical reasons. (IOW, I intend to play him with a variety of minor spells and items for color, but I will obtain staff permission before RPing spells or items of any significance.) Mordo has diplomatic credentials and access to significant wealth. He is known as a minor nobleman from Romania; he is not known as a sorceror. WEAKNESS: Mordo's primary weakness is that he does not produce magical energy in any significant quantity. If separated from his energy sources, he quickly tires out. Mordo's spells require concentration to cast, so attacks that successfully disrupt his concentration can prevent their functioning. Also they frequently require mystical incantations and gestures, so binding his hands or muffling his voice can also interfere with his spellcasting. PERSONALITY Mordo is urbane, polite, gracious, the epitome of old-world charm... at least, if he cares about your good opinion. Which he rarely does. The rest of the time he is aggressive, demanding, smug, and superior. He's cruel when he needs to be, and can fly into rages when balked, but mostly he's efficient. His decades of experience with darker magics have left him largely unencumbered by what are ordinarily considered 'positive' emotions; he has little room in his psyche for friendship, love, loyalty, happiness, even pleasure. Beneath his social mask he is typically emotionless unless motivated by anger, hatred, or fear. He believes himself entitled to things. Most significantly, to Strange's status as the Ancient One's favored mentor, to the mantle of Sorceror Supreme, to the unchecked power he believes comes with that role. He is Dormammu's servant on Earth, and is often compelled to act as, in effect, a puppet for the Dread Lord's will. He resents this, but tries not to admit it, not even to himself. He takes his status as local nobility, judge and protector of the people of Varf Mandra, very seriously. It's a small village with no political power to speak of, but its location near Latveria and the High Evolutionary's domain makes it potentially strategic, as well as subjecting it to unusual risks that he seeks to protect it from. HISTORY: Before the Beyond Karl Mordo is not technically speaking a nobleman, as the Austro-Hungarian Empire that granted his father the title collapsed after being defeated in World War I, and the First Austrian Republic abolished all such hereditary titles. He nevertheless considers that his birthright, legalities notwithstanding. He was born in Varf Mandra in 1948. Prior to his birth, his parents (Nikolai and Sara) and grandfather (Heinrich) were occultists who advised the Third Reich on mystical matters before and during World War II. Unknown to Nikolai, his marriage and his son's birth were part of Heinrich's plot to create a younger host of his bloodline and possess his body; when he obstructed that plot, Sara killed him on Heinrich's orders, and Karl (the new Baron Mordo) began to study black magic at his grandfather's knee. As a young teen, Karl discovered the details of his father's death, and swore vengeance. However, he was unable to take action directly due to his grandfather's magical defenses. Instead he left Castle Mordo and moved to Tibet, to study magic under the Ancient One. His teacher offered to protect him from his grandfather, but would not countenance vengeance; he rejected the offer and swore to deal with the threat himself. That ultimately led him to forbidden scrolls and the Dread Dormammu, to whose service he pledged himself in exchange for knowledge and power. In the aftermath, Heinrich was insane, Sara was imprisoned in Castle Mordo, and Baron Karl Mordo was a lot more powerful. He remained the Ancient One's student on Dormammu's orders, thinking he'd successfully concealed their alignment; he hadn't, but the Ancient One chose to keep him under close observation. Mordo stayed in Tibet, expecting to some day inherit the mantle of Sorceror Supreme. Instead, after decades, the Ancient One took a new apprentice and chose a new successor: Stephen Strange. Since then, he has been seeking vengeance, power, and status, not necessarily in that order. Post Beyond History Mordo was not gathered up into the Beyond, presumably because the Living Tribunal did not consider him significant enough. This would likely irritate him if he were aware of it, which he is not. He was briefly interrupted by a sense that the world had changed out from under him, but dismissed it. When Wiccan began casting the magics that resulted in Hulkling's pregnancy, Mordo noticed the associated magical perturbations. He has been paying very close attention to Strange's apprentice ever since. SAMPLE RP POST: The Bar With No Doors was no further from New York than from Romania, for those who had the wit to travel the hidden ways. Which was good, because Mordo had a very specific craving that even Castle Mordo's admirably well-stocked wine cellar would not satisfy. "A Black Rain, Chondu, if you please." It was the oft-headless bartender's signature drink, rumored to cause insanity in those who drank too much of it. But Mordo had developed a taste for it in his twenties which had stayed with him ever since, and when he'd discovered that Chondu could make a tolerable one he'd become a regular visitor to the ma. As far as he was concerned, that indicated he possessed the strength of mind to resist any influence towards insanity; that lesser minds had suggested from time to time that it merely indicated that insanity was his baseline state was itself merely an indication that they were, in fact, lesser minds. "Sure thing, Baron! You know, you and that Constantine fellow are the only people who order it... do you know him?" "I've heard his name bruited about," Mordo admitted, gathering his cloak around him and settling on a stool, "though we hardly run in the same circles. He's some sort of private investigator, isn't he?" "Yeah, that's right. Kind of. He comes by now and then, usually looking for somebody. Usually ends up getting the crap beaten out of him." The dark glass bottle Chondu pulled from behind the desk seemed to fill the bar with the screams of damned souls when he uncorked it, but they quieted down after a moment and he poured a finger's worth into a brandy snifter. "In here?" Mordo replied, incredulous. "I thought this place was a sanctuary?" Given the number of enemies he regularly ran into here, that was a provision he was unwilling to be take risks about. "Oh, it is, it is, don't worry, Baron," Chondu reassured him as he added various other ingredients. "There's just a special exception for Constantine. He actually managed to piss off the Owner, not sure how he managed it. Here ya go," he added, passing the smoking snifter across the bar. "Thank you, Chondru. If you ever find yourself in need of more private employment, I'll --" He cut off when he sensed a familiar presence preparing to manifest, and invoked the Fifth Rune to step temporarily outside of the Bar's framework of reality, shielding himself from detection... or from casual detection, at least... just before the accursed Stephen Strange, self-styled Master of the Mystic Arts, arrived. He watched from behind the privacy screen thus created as Strange met with a young girl with an intriguing aura... Limbo?... and closed their own privacy screen. Well. I'll have to investigate her further when I have the chance, he thought to himself as the Fifth Rune faded and he returned to visibility. |
