March 4th 2017 Approx. 10:00am The car was parked on the drive way outside the school, but with the engine still running. Julian sat behind the wheel, and loosened his tie. Wearing slacks, button shirt, and tie on a Saturday morning was a crime, but such was the life of a legal intern, especially one who worked at a fortune 500 company like Frost International. As promising as his future career looked, he was still the low man on the totem pole, and that meant the crap assignments till he has put in his time. Since starting his legal classes at Columbia, the young man had met about 50 young law students who would cut their own arms off for this same prestigious position. This morning's assignment? There was a property that Frost International acquired. Unfortunately some forms neglected to get signed. If they were going to be filed with the city office by this afternoon like Ms. Frost wanted, then someone was going to have to take the papers into New York, get them signed, and delivered to City Hall. It promised to be a long and boring outing for a Saturday, so Julian decided to invite his pal Ethan along for the drive, and to get away from the school campus for a while. For the time being, Julian and Ethan were still roommates in the school Dorms, but as Julian has graduated from from Xavier's and promoted to Legacy Squad, he would be moving out into the apartments in the near future. Julian didn't want to lose touch with with his best friend. Since coming to Xavier's, Ethan was the first to accept Julian for who he was. The first to tell the telekinetic that being a mutant didn't mean he was less human. It seemed so long ago now, and they were both different people now, but they would always be friends. So Julian sat in the car waiting. Ethan would be out soon, and then they would head in to the big city. It was a bit of a drive to just get some paper's signed, no matter how important the were. Perhaps they could get lunch as well. It was the best way to salvage at least some of this weekend. Julian pulled out his phone as he often did while he was waiting. It was perhaps a little pathetic or maybe even a sign of a larger psychological issue, but he went right into his text messages and pulled up the last message he received from his mother, dated October 9th 2015. He never erased it. There has been a lot of issues with his mutant-hating family since the beginning, but that was when everything came to a head. This text he got right before that happened. "Your Father and I just want what is best for you, Jude. Make us proud." In his mind, Julian could assign meaning to the text, in different ways. He could pretend the request to make them proud was from a loving parent who truly did want what was best for him, but he knew full well that when she said "Make us proud." what she really meant to say was "Don't shame us." Though the words were sent to justify why they wanted to get rid of him, in they end it might not have been how they intended, but they really did do what was best for their second son, but sending him to Xavier's. There have been many, many unanswered texts from the boy to his mother since, but he just kept going back to her final, written words. Sudden movement near the main doors to the school caught Julian's eye. Ethan was heading toward the car. The Telekinetic Teen quickly closed the text message, and stuck his phone back in his pocket. |

He was late again, wasn't he? Yea, he was late. Ethan really should have gotten a jump start on running out to the car, but of course he had to jus- wait, no. It's not that big a deal Ethan, he sighs. If anyone wouldn't care regardless of if he really was or not, it was Julian. Ethan ran up alongside the passenger door of the car and got inside. "Hey man," he huffed, fastening his seatbelt. "Sorry, that took a little longer than I expected." Ethan glanced at the clock. ... Okay, so maybe he wasn't actually late. That's... yea, that's embarrassing. He down at his watch. It must be a few minutes ahead or something. He'd be sure to fix that up later, because honestly he just really didn't feel like it right now. He smiled and looked at Julian. "Alright, all good to go." The young mutant was used to seeing Julian all dressed up for his job, but if the way Julian was dressed was criminal, Ethan's outfit would have warranted an execution by firing squad, or at least a Court Marshaling. He was dressed very casually, donning a light gray hoodie with some dark blue jeans and boots. A slight twinge of yellow could be seen from his undershirt, giving a small splash of color. Ethan had been starting to like yellow more as of late. It was a nice color, just... not as a primary one in an outfit. If you wanted it at all you kind of just had to barely add it in. He liked to think he was doing well with it. Ethan realized he should probably try to dress a little bit warmer - after all winter hadn't quite died down in New York yet. But as he understood it most of their time would be inside, and if worst came to worst the young mutant always had the ability to just heat himself. "So..." Ethan ventured, glancing out the window. "You make this trip how often again?" He asked. "Because... I dunno, do it enough and this drive could seem like it'd get pretty boring." They weren't exactly right next to the city. "But then again, it is for work. Which is something you sort of do," he chuckled, giving his friend some light teasing. He seemed to be a little bit down when he got into the car. Maybe he was just tired. "So!" He exhaled, stretching his arms out over his head. "What's on the agenda for today again? Something with Ms. Frost didn't get done? I don't know about you but I wouldn't want to be the person who messed up. She's scary dude," Ethan mumbled. He grinned, clearly trying to get some friendly banter going. "But who knows what'll happen?" He chuckles. "Maybe there'll be another Puppet Guy or..." He gasps. "A pet store." Okay, that last one might sound mild, but it's been a bit of a running joke between the two that Ethan always wants to find a pet to take back to Xavier's. In those situations Julian always had to act like an adult to Ethan, which was a little odd in retrospect. ... E had been talking a lot. Hadn't really been pausing too much. He should probably give Julian a bit of time to catch up. After a few moments he pats him on the shoulder. "Want me to put on some music? Ed Sheeran's new album just came out. Got it on Spotify, if you'd like." |

Julian had to go and put himself in a somber mood by looking at that damn text, right before Ethan came out. It was not as if Julian had been in a good mood before that either. Work on Saturdays did happen now and then, like Ethan pointed out, but it was never fun when it did. It was always the stuff too difficult to get done during the week, or something that was time sensitive. Either way, Julian was going to have to try harder to be good company for Ethan, just like Ethan was here to give Julian some company. "Yeah man, throw it up." he replied about the Ed Sheeran and spotify. The Frost International company car that Ms. Frost had given Julian use of, had all the modern luxuries like bluetooth. "Ms. Frost might seem.... I'm going to say standoffish, but she's actually not that bad. All the kids at school are afraid of her, but she really just wants to help toughen us all up as well. Once you get to really know her, you know she just..." he was going to say " wants what's best for us" but then his mind went right to the text again. It's what his mother had said. "... has our best interests at heart." he corrected. And the kids did need toughening up. All the kids at that school did. If recent history has taught Julian anything, it's that mutants still have a very difficult road ahead of them and the older generation is just trying to make sure that they were passing the torch to kids who were ready for it. Julian had to laugh a little when Ethan mentioned the pet store with so much more intensity than he had the Puppet Master they had accidentally faced off against a few Christmases back. Ethan and his love of animals were in constant conflict with Xavier's Academy's no pet policy, and one of the rare moments when Julian was the voice of reason. That being said, Julian was not against stopping at a store, and letting Ethan play with the animals. "Not necessarily this drive. Just hunting down the guy who's signature we need on these documents," he waved a rather sizable blue colored folder, "and lunch in the city. Wherever you want. We can totally stop at a pet store, but purchase nothing, and if we run into Puppeteer from hell again, well we call it in and then do our best to protect the people and subdue him... in that order." There was the Legacy Squad and Mr. Summers leadership training kicking in. Sometimes he didn't even realize he was doing it. Then he realized he was talking to his best friend, and not taking an X-Men oral exam. "And we look awesome doing it." he finished with a smirk. "Oh, and somewhere in there we have to stop off at City Hall to file the papers." The music started, and he let Ethan adjust the volume to where they could hear it, but still hear each other. "So how are things with the intrepid Agent Johnson?" He asked casually as he checked his mirrors to make a lane change. "Never had a long distance relationship really, but it's gotta suck. If Fia moved away, I am not sure what I would do." |

"Yea, sure thing man," Ethan smiled, taking a little longer than he would have liked to sync his phone to the car's blue tooth. Technology didn't always exactly... well, agree with Ethan. He hit the play button, adjusted the volume, and just let whatever was at the top of the album play. He was pretty sure this song was called Eraser or something like that. Ethan quirked a brow at Julian's sudden defense of Ms. Frost, causing the young mutant to chuckle. "Oh dude, don't worry I know she means nothing but the best for us. She wouldn't keep a position at the school otherwise... I mean she definitely doesn't need the money." Ethan gestured to Julian, as if that was all the evidence he needed. "There's a fine line between someone being hard on you because they don't care or are indifferent, and someone just having a rather stern personality. Let's just put it like this... I think I'd rather talk to Mr. Summers about personal matters than her," he chuckled. Neither were exactly the welcoming types. "I absolutely know she means well... she just scares me dude. I know I can talk to her... I'd just rather not see where that gets me." Ethan gave a playful roll of his eyes as Julian began to assess what his course of action would be if they really did find the puppet guy again. Ethan had only been joking, he didn't quite expect him to list off a step-by-step play of what their course of action would be. He knew it was all with good intent, so he didn't really care that much. "Well Julian, I don't actually think we'll be running into that guy. He caused quite a bit of destruction, so I'm pretty sure he's still doing his time. Also, from what I understand from what you told me, all the people he had influenced away from the fair were sort of... mindless, which is never good. So honestly, I'm actually more hopeful that we don't run into him at all," he chuckled. "But yes, if we do see him we'll look cool taking him out. You can be my backup. Again," he grinned. Ethan stretched out as Julian asked his next question. He was fairly confident he could get him to the pet store somehow. "Oh, Daisy?" Ethan asked, glancing to his friend. "I uh... yea, long distance kind of blows. It's definitely a bit of a detriment to the whole 'communication' aspect of a relationship," he sighed. "But things are going pretty well so far, I just worry about her sometimes. But she's also following her dreams. I'm proud of her," Ethan smiled. "I just haven't heard from her in a little while... but I'm guessing that comes with the territory of SHIELD training. I mean if you join the army they restrict outside communications for the duration of your training. I'm guessing SHIELD is the same way," he shrugged. "But when we have gotten to see each other it's great. I'm just trying to be supportive, because there's really no stopping her if she sets her mind to something," he chuckled. "I guess I like that take charge side of her..." He shook his head and looked at Julian. "What about you and Fia? Everything goign well?" |

To tell the truth, Julian was not quite sure how to answer. It wasn't that things were bad between him and Fia. On the contrary, they were as good as they ever were. The only problem was where did they go from there? The high school romance days were already over, and with it was the luxury of living day to day. Things were at the point where they were going to need to start making some decisions on how serious this was going to get. Of course, that was not really something Ethan needed to worry about. "Things are good. Our schedules have just gotten a bit crazier, but with us both being on Legacy we get to spend time together. I'll never understand what I did to deserve her. I am just waiting for her to realize she can do better than me." Julian laughed a little. Ethan was one of those friends who was more like a mentor. He was a sage. Whenever Julian needed advice, or even occasionally needed to be put in his place, he knew he could always trust Ethan to help out. It was what stood out about Ethan Shepard. Everyone knew he was the nice guy or Xavier's, so what was he doing with the spoiled rich punk, or so the reputation was. The prevailing theory at the school was that Julian was Ethan's special project, or that Julian was actually using Ethan as a way to get some good PR among the students, without really having to do anything. The truth of the matter was that sometimes, opposites make the best friends. They started out as roommates but they compliment each other well. It had been too long since the two of them got time alone, to just talk like they used to. Hellion forgot how much he liked it. "How are the parents?" he asked, as he made another lane change onto the freeway. The traffic was not bad this time on a Saturday morning. "So we are actually going to have to do a little bit of hunting for this guy. If he is not in his office, we might have to go to his home, but I have strict orders that these papers have to be signed today, no exceptions." With one hand, he slipped the blue folder back into the brown leather messenger bag he usually took to the office. He was just letting Ethan know what they had to look forward to. "Is there anything else in town you would like to see today, while we are there. Any shopping or anything? If we get this work done early, then we will have the whole afternoon in New York." The truth was, this was about a 1 hour and 40 minute car ride, one way. Julian tended to drive on the fast side (surprise there) so it might take a bit less time, but with the trip there, then the return trip, this was at least going to be an adventure. The boys might as well have a little fun while they are there. Other than this task, the world was open to them today. "So I know I harp on this a lot, but it is fun for me to talk about. Dude, you gotta get a code name. You are like, the only kid in school who doesn't have one. Even if you don't want to be an X-Man, which I think would be a mistake by the way, it's still an Xavier's Academy rite of passage." Since the day Julian got to Xavier's and discovered the code name phenomenon, he has been trying to get Ethan to pick one. To tell the truth, the Telekinetic could not quite remember how he got his own moniker. He was sure it had something to do with his boorish behavior in his early days here. For a while, he was getting detention literally every other day. Sometimes outlandish things like starting fights or openly defying teachers. They were things he had trouble believing he did now, and somehow managed to change a lot, at least to the point where Mr. Summers and the rest of the faculty would make him Legacy Squad. The way Julian saw it, Xavier's just needed time to knock the William Keller out of him. |

Ethan nodded slowly as Julian summed up where he and Fia stood. That definitely made sense that things were getting a little bit hectic. With Julian's training and job with Ms. Frost he already had a slightly packed schedule. Fitting time for Fia in there would be a challenge for anyone. But, as far as Ethan, and as he was sure Julian, was concerned, it was damn well worth finding the time for her. Ethan just wished Julian would cut it with wondering how he could be good enough for her, or anyone. "Oh come on, none of that," Ethan smiled, leaning his seat back. "Julian, on the surface you might appear to be a little bit egocentric at times, but anyone who knows you even a fraction as well as I do knows that you care. You're good where it counts, and your actions show that in spades. Trust me dude, you definitely deserve her." Ethan glanced out the window, generally eyeing the road as he waited for New York city to come into view. "Oh, my parents are good. Same old same old honestly. Emily's looking at colleges though." She was hardly younger than Ethan anyhow - only a span of a few months. It just so happened that amount of time warranted her being a year behind the energy manipulator. "She's looking at University of Hawaii... MIT even though that's a nightmare to get into. A few others too, but she's pretty undecided." Honestly the thought of Emily going off anywhere for college was ridiculously alien to Ethan. But he supposed it couldn't be quite as strange as when he decided to go to an Institute for Mutants right outside New York City. So Ethan wasn't really one to talk. At least he'd find excuses to visit if she ended up in Hawaii. Because hell yes. "Yea, yea, hunt for the guy, trespass on his property, present him with his subpoena or whatever," Ethan kidded. "Don't worry man, I know this can take a bit. Just handle what you gotta first. But after..." He paused for a moment. "Uh... I'm not sure. Shopping would be good, I could use some light clothes for the spring. Most of mine got thrashed before I got a handle on the not accidentally firing off energy blasts thing," he chuckled. "After that... Museum of Natural History?" He asked with a smile. Ethan relaxed as he glanced at the traffic around them. Seemed like a steady flow for the day - Julian was just going a bit faster than he should. "Careful, guy coming up on your right," he warned. The young energy manipulator chuckled as Julian brought back the topic of code names. That was basically a favorite past time of Ethan's friends by this point - especially for The Cuckoos. Ethan didn't mind it, actually quite the contrary. He honestly thought it was fun whenever anybody started to pitch names to him. He'd heard everything from Glowstick to Electrode to Node and more - it was all in good fun. "I don't mind man, but I'll remind you that Mrs. Summers doesn't have a code name either. And I'm pretty sure Logan is Wolverine because some poor soul just thought he looked like an angry badger or something," he teased. He glanced around, immediately feeling bad about the joke. "Please never tell him I said that. Like ever. I like living." He recomposed himself, prepping himself for the rest of the ride. "Alright, you can start pitching ideas anytime you want. It's not like I can go anywhere," he smiled. |
