Chain Creation and Manipulation

Time: Early afternoon Date: March 20th Location: Near Central Park Spring had finally arrived, in theory at least. Truth be told, it was still somewhat brisker than it had been, and Reece was still wearing her scarf for the sake of her poor, hopefully-not-chapped face. She used chapstick and a little moisturizer to keep from getting cracked lips and red nose, but she was never sure how much it helped. Dry winter, blah. Anyway, today was an unusually nice day to spend outside of the school for once, and Ben Deeds was a great companion to bring along. After the skating escapades, she'd grown quite fond of spending time with him; he was charming, funny, and nice. Reece, thought he might be kind of cute, too, but to be frank, it was hard to tell. Still, she liked to think she wasn't so shallow that she couldn't look past that. The air was cool, but it wasn't very windy, and the lack of clouds made the day seem much brighter and more spring-like, and with the warmer winter, greenery was returning to the area. Reece's hands were in the pockets of her vest, but she occasionally pulled them out to keep her wavy hair out of her face. The streets were about as crowded as she could expect. Anchorage was a small suburb, but Louisville was pretty large as cities went. Still didn't hold a candle to New York City, of course. She was always impressed with its density of people, though she'd gotten used to its size. The number of occupants at any given time was truly staggering for her. She wondered if it was even more shocking for her companion. "Hey Ben, where are you from again?" Reece asked as she walked along the sidewalk. The plan was theoretically to browse cafes and such to find a quick lunch, but she wouldn't mind if they just walked around for a while. Well, okay, she would like some food as well. Maybe she should've had a bigger breakfast after all if she was going to be walking... "Detroit, wasn't it? Must've been really different from here." All Reece knew about Detroit was that it had a baaaaad reputation. Luckily Ben turned out well in spite of that. |

“Detroit it was and well… different kind of. New York still has money flowing through it, Detroit’s been dead long before i was born. Everyone there under the age of 45 ish is trying their best to leave.” Ben had of course said yes when asked to slip free of the school for a bit with what he thought of as a good friend and confidant, Rose-Ellen Carter. Of course he’d consent to most anything she asked of him, after all she had actually taken to the ice without prompting. It certainly didn’t hurt that she was cute as hell and rather relaxed. Uptight people annoyed Ben, though they often didn’t stay uptight for long around him. After Reece asked him out, it was a date in his mind regardless, he had ran up to his room to get dressed for the occasion. He was going to be, at least for the foreseeable future a cute girl with a great smile so it was time to make the most of it. It was still a bit weird to be male and dress as female, but it made sense in this case. Ten minutes later he was clad in a thick, yet flattering winter dress, matching mittens, and sensible flat furry boots. He’s almost forgotten a black handbag/cellphone carries to go with it all and had had to come down the stairs twice. He looked quite a sight coming down the stairs, his tall lanky frame looking as out of place as it could be in a stretched winter dress. However Ben had never been one to let other people’s views of his looks outwardly bother him and to be honest, way weirder shit then that happened every ½ hour at Xavier’s. Besides within minutes he could have been Reece’s closest cousin and the outfit rocked on that look. So now he walked beside her, his eyes darting to her pretty face, then away again. Ben noticed people, always noticed people. He memorized their looks, their outfits, the details that made them tick. Part of it was his power, ever seeking ways to blend in, part of it was simply that the teen found people completely fascinating. “Basically New York and Detroit are the same, huge places, too many people, lots of blending and segregation all at once. But in my home there were tons of closed shops, condemned buildings, open gang turf, and streets, even in the main you just didn’t go down. Part of the neighborhood was black, as a white kid you don’t even look that way and vice versa. I had friends across the line though so I got away with a bit more. But yeah, it was a shithole and I spent like the past 5 years trying to leave. Thought dancing would be my ticket out, instead it was faces, go figure.” Ben’s face, well really mostly Reece’s face, went from happy and excited to sorrowful and introspective to excited again. He was not a deep thinker, not a philosopher by any stretch. However he was rather observant and graceful. As he sidestepped a large man in, of all things, a Packers coat he tugged on Reece’s sleeve. “Hey, how about eating? This place has the most adorable neon of a man chasing a pig.” |
