NAME: American Elephant (Loxodonta Americanus)

TYPE: Packyderm --> Elephant

STATUS: Critical

POPULATION: 500 individuals

LOCATION: The Middle United States, ranging from California to Ohio.

BIOME: Grassland, usually near Rivers/Lakes

APPEARENCE: The animal is similar in size and shape to the African Forest Elephant, though it's ears are even smaller, and it's tusks are much shorter. It is also much smaller, at 4 1/2 feet tall, and has a thin coat of brown wooly hair.

BEHAVIOR: The animal travels in small family groups, and they like to eat grasses and shrubs. They swim often, and have no natural predators. Their most unique behavior is that they will rear up on their back legs to reach highest treetops.

HISTORY: Discovered by Steve and Keith Bluefang :) in 2001, the critically endangered animal is extremely rare, and since then, ivory trade has gone straight up. The original estimated population of 900 individuals is now down to 500, and scientists predict it will be extinct by 2011. DNA tissue has been preserved so the species can be cloned.

CAPTIVITY: The only zoo that can keep these animals successfully is the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, Illinois, which keeps three of these animals alive in a small enclosure between Indian Lake and Hoofed Animals. Since then, the animals have had two births - Lindy in 2005 and Sam in 2007.
