Of the Toiling in the Fields and Subsequent Visions I had been and have been a weaver my entire existence. Apart from my duties as a caretaker and advice-giver to the young or newly immigrated, harvesting plant fiber and weaving it into suitable material had been mine life. I offered prayers to Jorb and Loftar when needed, and often called for advice upon my great ancestor, Gesar de Ling, who lived in the fabled Red River Outpost before the Great Deluge. I was not what could be described as a devout man, however. So it struck me as a great surprise when on this day, while harvesting the hemp and discussing a trade with the merchant Ossian, that I was suddenly taken full force by a power I cannot attest to. It blackened my vision, dulled my senses, and forced me to the ground as if it were a boar attack. In all aspects it would appear that I was sleeping, but I suddenly became fully conscious. I awoke into a world not unlike our own, but my surroundings were suddenly more enhanced. I saw a simple cabin with a simple garden, all the while surrounded on one side by impenetrable thicket and on the other by a sandy beach. Within the garden was a man, young in years but with an expression of serenity beyond his time, tending a sickly auroch. I approached him, not of my own accord, and this is what he said unto me. "Come, child, with peace in your heart. I am Seth, child of Adam and Eve, the creation of the one true God. Listen well, for I have prepared teachings for you." Of the Teachings of Seth, the Gentle Sage Nodding when I heard his words, I stepped towards him. He led me into his simple house, where I took a seat across from him. Drinking from my tankard of Weißbier, I implored him. "Oh Seth, tell me your teachings, please. You mentioned one true God. I have been told that only Jorb and Loftar are gods." Seth smiled and began. "That is not so. Jorb and Loftar are among the strongest spirits in our world, capable of inflicting change equivalent to another Great Deluge, but they are not equal to God. That is to say, that while God cannot affect change in the world like they can, He is all knowing and all present, as He is the creator of this world. It is by his own design that He may not manipulate the Earth but through his creation. And what a wonderful creation we are. Plant, animal, or mankind, we all have our role and power in His design. Of course, being the most complex, and the most powerful, I have focused my lore primarily on that. The first of God's creations were the sun, moon, Earth, and sea. Second came the plants, dependent on naught but the moon for time, sun for energy, Earth for home, and water for substance. As these were simple, the Almighty turned his efforts to a new set of creation: the animals. They had the ability to think, based on instinct, and relied on each other and plants for nourishment. But yet, they were still incapable of His true goal: a creature with a mind, with a soul. Thus did He create the first two mortal beings. Giving them a place of paradise, he created two beings, a male named Adam and a female named Lilith. They were wed, and lived together, but Adam attempted to assert his dominance over Lilith, believing himself to be made in the image of God. Lilith retorted to Adam, explaining that while he was made to resemble the Lord, he was not the Lord. And she, as made in the image of what God believed to be the ultimate beauty, was equal to Adam in all aspects. Lilith, the Earth-sister, thus left Adam to spend time in the wilderness, where she consorted with an angel of God and gained power over beauty and nature. The only exemption from this was Eden, which was Adam's by command of God. In his arrogance and loneliness, Adam created a new wife, subservient to him, by name of Eve. Ah, she was beautiful too, but foolish from a life of subservience to Adam. She was tempted by forces of evil, and in her foolishness led Adam astray as well. So the weak and foolish woman and the arrogant and blind man were cast out of paradise for disobeying God. Together, with new shame and new sin, they formed a family. They had three sons: Cain, Abel, and myself, and two daughters: Azura (married briefly to myself before her death) and Awen (married to Cain). Our life was simple. Cain farmed the crops whilst Abel tended his flock and I studied. One day, as I was exploring a mystery of existence, Cain and Abel were both brought to bring a sacrifice to the Lord. Abel naively gave of his flock, and Cain, in his jealousy, gave of Abel. Awen, in her grief, killed Azura before killing herself. Cain left forever, to the Land of Nod, which is not reachable by mortals anymore. Only those Damned as him may reach it. I fled to the wilderness, seeking shelter from my cowardice and inability to provide Him with a sacrifice. With my books and lore, I survived, but I was utterly alone. I did not dare join a tribe, for fear that that would expose my cowardly nature and cretinous sins to all. Instead, I hid in the darkest thicket, feeding only on what I needed to survive. It was there I found Lilith, who became a sister to me, and taught me the ways as she shall teach you." Seth gestured out the window, where a woman, tall and beautiful, is waiting for me, flanked by all sorts of beasts I would normally be afraid of. I stood my ground, thanking Seth for the meal. It had been more wholesome than any in my life, and I felt utterly content to go see the strange woman of beasts. Of the Commands of Lilith, Sister of the Earth Without missing a step I approached her. She gave me neither a look of annoyance or pleasure, instead she stared as if she were appraising every detail of my insignificant life. Meekly I inquired of her, "You are Lilith?" "As you are Rimbaud. Weaver and minister of your village's welfare. Acadia does well to have you." I thanked her and bowed my head. "Milady, if you could..." "Yes, I shall." She interrupted, before taking me on a walk. "You have been told the truth of human history through the eyes of Seth. He is a wise sage, and is responsible for much of the learning and advancement that goes in and the world. Civilization, the cities and farms, those are his domain. I prefer the wild, maintaining it through my agents, the dryads, and making sure the balance is always maintained. Both our works are made easier through the great ancestors." I gave her a puzzled look, sure that the ancestors were myths due to Seth's revelations. "Oh, the ancestors do exist. The grandchildren of Adam and Eve peopled the world, with the help of the spirits- forces of nature so concentrated of divinity that they gained sentience and power. Such are Jorb and Loftar, and are capable of moving freely throughout the world without abiding by the rule of the Almighty. Those people descended from Adam and Eve survived, and lived in a world of their own. They became the ancestors when Jorb and Loftar swept the world of everything, leaving Seth and I rebuild the Almighty's creation. Those ancestors have become so entwined with Him that they are part of His Earth, without control of anyone. They spend their existence without thought or purpose, only power and the desire to regain sentience. Blasphemous worship of them keeps them bound to Earth with mortal delights. Evil worship uses those spirits for their own good, enticing them as would anyone seeking to gain their power. This results only in the damnation of the spirit to Hell. The only way to correctly gain their power is, as before, with an offering. Once this offering is made and their power shared, the follower of these teachings releases the spirit into Heaven, for their righteousness has won the spirit a place to regain consciousness in Paradise. And of the spirits having died since the Great Deluge? They haunt the Earth too, looking for a release. They must be buried correctly, in a mausoleum or crypt, or thrown to sea if an enemy. Once doing so, the spirit shall be sent to Heaven or Hell, where they will grant favors to their descendants." Lilith paused, awaking me from my trance devoting this all to memory. "You, Rimbaud. You have been chosen to lead this, and your village has been chosen as the host. Establish a place near Nouvelle Acadia where the proper worship of the Lord our God is brought. Spread the word, and do the job that Seth is doing. As he opened your eyes to the truth, I now command you to bring that truth to the world." We stopped walking, and I noticed I was in my cabin in Nouvelle Acadia. Seth and Lilith flanked me, and I could feel their love and concern for the world. "Your leader here, the one called Labine, he is to be respected as the architect of this village. Seek his permission. If he grants it, you are to search for the spot to establish your temple, where he shall be granted Sainthood. Any member of your village may accompany you during the building, greet them as your brother in bringing the Word of God to the Earth." Seth spoke to me again. "It is not enough to spread the word of the holy, though. You must also act holy, you who has been granted this gift. In all things practice tolerance and moderation. Intelligence and caution are your cardinal virtues, opposed to stupidity and rash action. Do not become arrogant but do not loathe yourself. Allow for emotion such as love, but do not let it get twisted and become hate." UPON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF NORDACADIA, THE MONASTERY OF THE SETHIAN CHURCH I nodded and opened my mouth to agree, but when I did, the two had left. I sat there, stunned for a second by the awe of the experience. When I finally managed to leave my bed of boughs, I took it upon myself to survey the village. I saw Ossian in his chair smoking a pipe contentedly. I laughed with joy and then spotted the newcomers Cephal and Rude Sykes working to get their plots together. Smiling at their hopes and aspirations, I walked over and saw my neighbor Kharavela, the descendant of the late Commander O Neill. I bade him and my friend Orago good morrow, and pleasantly sought out the leader, Labine. I told him my vision and he accepted it, granting me permission. For this I dub him Saint Labine, a holy man and a grand leader. And I left, traveled up the road until I reached the end of the inlet. With the visions Lilith gave me, I knew this was the place to build my monastery. It would be home to the Sethian Church, following the teachings of the man who awoke me to the truth and the woman who gave him power. Here, I know, is the place where the Word of God shall take root, and spread first to my countrymen, and then to the rest of the Earth. Thus said Rimbaud the Weaver, Keeper of Nordacadia Monastery and First Brother of the Sethian Church, as well as secular Minister in the Confederate Cabinet 12 March 2011 Amen. |
