The most important part of Advanced Wars is the teamplay.
Without a good team it is already good game.

List of Heroes

This list shows how much a hero contributes to the team on a scale from 0 to 3.

Assault Gunner (1)
Shield Trooper (2)
Commander (2)
Sniper (0)
Medic (3)
Tech Mage (1)
Assassin (0)
Firebat (1)
Engineer (3)

The smaller a team is the more important it is to pick the classes which are good for your team. As sniper and assassin you do not take your team's damage, do not buff your team and you don't heal.

Team Combos:

Medic x2 + Shield x2 + Rest x2
Commander x2 + Shield x2 + Assault x2
Engineer x1 + Commander x1 + 2x Assault/Shield

Basically a team should always consist of these classes:

1-2 Medics, Engineers or Commanders
1-2 Assault Gunners or Shield Troopers

Working as a team:

1. Pick a team leader. This should be a person that fights in the front and has range. The entire team needs to follow orders directly.

2. Stick together. This rule applies in most cases. However splitting into two even groups is often very useful. On dm_control splitting can be useful to take all positions on the map and force the enemy into an impossible position.

3. Give jobs. In CTF pick 2-3 flag runners and 1-2 defenders depending on team size to do the job. Assassins, Medics, Shield Troopers and Assault Gunners should form the attack party while Snipers, Engineers and Tech Mages should stay back and guard the flag.

4. Never ditch the team. Soloing is the worst offense against teamplay. The only times you shouldn't be with your team is when you charge into the enemy lines as an assassin, or as a Sniper, but then your team should lie between you and the enemy.
