World events are on everyone’s mind, including mine. Are we going to war? We may be at war before this publication goes to print. I hear so many opinions on what we should and shouldn’t do as a nation that it gives me a headache. So now I’m going to work on giving you one.
:) It’s positively insane the political credibility we give actors and singers in our country. Since when did knowing how to sing and act become qualifications to run the most powerful nation in the world? Oh, I see! If a person is attractive I should trust him or her with my life. Or maybe it’s the fact he may have played a president in a movie. Don’t get me wrong. Everyone has the right to voice his or her opinion. That’s a right we have because we’re Americans. That right, however, can be abused when we don’t look at the facts and think for ourselves. People who rely on the opinions of a person who is no more qualified to know what’s truly going on in the world than I am are showing political irresponsibility. Celebrities are using the fact that they are in front of a camera to voice their views — views that are questionable — after all, aren’t these celebrities far removed from the real world? Finally someone agrees with me. I heard on television last night that Sean Penn was refused a movie role because he is so “politically active” that it affects his box office appeal. Personally, he never appealed to me anyway but I’m glad to see that others are seeing through the stars. I’ve made a point not to waste my time listening to or watching Barbara Streisand or Alec Baldwin. Didn’t Alec Baldwin say he was going to leave the country if Bush was elected? Well, Alec, we’re waiting… The problem is not so much the fact that all these “expert” celebrities lean so far left that they lose their balance, it’s the fact that the reason I watch movies and listen to music is because I want to escape — it’s a fantasy thing. I don’t want to be reminded that Tommy Lee Jones is a Democrat or Charleston Heston is a Republican. It’s a shame that we can’t enjoy a movie anymore without wondering how politically active the stars are. I’m almost ready to agree with a friend who jokingly said the nation would be better off if we bombed Hollywood on our way to Iraq. So what do I say to all those celebrities who think I want to hear their opinion? “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” - Peggy From the Spring 2003 Edition of What's Up, Doc? / © 2003 www.PondDoc.com / All rights Reserved.
