This is the backstory thread for AE. I'll start off by giving mine: "Trar DeEricsson: a Level 3 Rogue Lord and leader of the Krighton colony. He is a 28-year-old atheist adventurer who works with Columbus & Cooke, a semi-private merchant firm affiliated with the Kingdom of Frussia (based off of France) and located in the major port city of Postobene. He got sick of the torrid conditions and corrupt monarchy, so he got authority from the board of directors to lead an expedition to colonize another continent (one that was kind of like North America, circa 1645). He made it, apparently, only to find that it’s already been colonized. Not daunted in the least, he began his world-changing work. He somewhat has the aura of a colonial Frenchman, due to the fact that Frussia is…well, based off of France." Lemme know what you think, and post your own. I myself cannot wait to start playing and start using my incredibly awesome list of names for things to name. |

I may as well post the backstory for an NPC faction. No worries, though; this is something you'd know. You'd have read about it, even. The Etherites are a peoples from a remote region of Afterearth -- amazing, for little is truly remote in a world as small as Afterearth. The etymology of their name has been lost to history, and it is no wonder. They have been operating for hundreds of years, since the beginning of written history, out of a snowy no man's land. For a long time scholars have wondered at their decision to do so, others have purported that they simply came into existence there, and the peasantry is generally verypleased they aren't on the mainland, and instead stay isolated. They are a fairly loose group of peoples composed of warriors from all walks of life. They run one large township, placed at the base of a mountain, and several small villages dot its perimeter. Of particular note is that the use of arcane magic is shunned, probably because of some sort of cultural taboo. Divine magic, which is based completely on spirituality -- as with all of its kind, making "divine" a bit of a misnomer -- is acceptable, but it is unknown from where his double-standard comes from. In any case, the organization will not hesitate to strike down anyonethat dares to use arcane magic on their land. Tempting their wrath is to tempt the wrath of an army at least two hundred men solid, and no one has ever lived to escape them. They are the reason nobody knows just how fertile the northeast lands are. They are also the reason nobody dares enter them. And there I saw it, the ship burning to cinders behind us, all our supplies and all our crew quickly smoldering, and the charred remains sent into the depths by a few well-placed arrows. Then the warriors had us surrounded, with our backs to the sea and their blades to our necks. - Speculative Fiction On Isolated Cultures, 4th Edition |

Edessa was founded by a company of settlers from a war-torn, now-chaotic, land, led by a rather cold (both figuratively and literally) mage, who is the daughter of a very influential family. They were sent off with as many supplies as they could carry and left with a group of varying professions, from soldiers to skilled workers to farmers. They have settled in a very fertile plain near a freshwater lake and good-sized forest, though a bit too far from any place that could give them a good supply of ores for iron. The Edessans have carried with them equipment and various objects from their previous homeland. Arcane magic seems heavily emphasized: there are many magi among them, with decent skill in various schools. Their blue flag is adorned with what they call the "Magic Sign." This sign is a golden-yellow pentagram with symbols at the corners representing the four elements (Fire, Water/Ice, Win/Air, Lightning) and, at the top, three dots in a pyramid formation, symbolizing the purest form of magic itself. Quick note: If we end up using D&D, there are eight schools of magic (abjuration, etc.) and those are the terms I'll use in-game. Of course, nobody's gonna stop you from inventing your own system in-character. |

Not like you weren't going to take all of the ore in the first place! Maybe you should've actually ripped into him a bit more in the first place. Or commented on the bandit faction Trar's gotten himself into. |

The chieftan Brennan and his clan are hardy northmen, hailing from one of the tall mountain ranges which clutch at the heart of the mainland like an eagle's talons, and are the refuge of a number of war-stricken peoples. These rough folk hew their homes from the very rock of the mountain valleys and canyons. For this, they're derided as cavemen, but their dwellings are enduring, and they're known to be skilled hunters, able to find what little food exists in the barren peaks. Reluctant at first to countenance any kind of sea voyage, the founders of the highland settlement of Ovir were left with little choice, as a series of harsh winters left their homeland bereft even of the few resources upon which they could sustain themselves. Seeing no home in the devastated outer kingdoms, they gambled upon rumours of other lands across the waves. not dwarves lol |

Nordic people, eh? Not bad at all. We've got a European style merchant group, a potentially Asian magocracy, and a bunch of manly men from the north. |
