I think that the layout, goal, and Staff team of Boost should be reevaluated one piece at a time. For the layout go in to your ACP and find out what's getting the most views, and take a simple look around the index to see what has gotten no or hardly any use at all. The Resource sector is so large that it's really a mess - you can't tell where your priorities are at all. I believe that Support is a Resource/Service, but the Design Discussion forum of which it's part of is not a resource, and you must consider if the Exhibit is a part that you really want to downplay as a subforum. Using Dorith's blog as a reference point, he said at one point users come to share knowledge or to obtain it. The exhibit is a place for people to do both - they can show off and also ask how to obtain a certain effect in a design of theirs. Keeping to the Design Discussion forum, I realize that the Support section hasn't even had any posts, and it might be something you'd want to consider removing completely and coming back to it once you have yourself more established. Along with removing things, there's the thing about Requests that you need to consider removing if you don't have the time/staff base to keep it running at the moment. The Sketch Gala should be removed as it's had hardly any submissions. I head someone suggest to you about converting to more of a Service-based Resource forum which would be a smarter move for you to do. As Outline is more of a Theme/Half Graphics Resource forum and GForce is a Graphics/Half Themes Resource forum your place would fit in the left-over third. This would be your chance to settle down and focus on something particular, make it your goal to achieve and further your services for those. Don't be afraid to use your community to comment on or suggest ideas that would help further your Service side. You could go to random boards in the directory and even ask them what they could use to help improve their experience. Whatever you do, you need to set a primary focus because otherwise you won't be able to sustain all three sides and you'll just run yourself dry. As for the Staff situation, I don't pay much attention what your staff do individually but obviously something's broken in the pipe. It's not always the need to fire some staff members (though I'm sure you probably do need to at the moment) so much as it is the need to set a goal. This relates to my second paragraph because right now a lot of your Staff don't really know what to do and how to improve the forum. If you start saying "We're going to buckle down and focus on forum services" or something, then your staff may know that they should keep in mind wherever they are some ideas for those kinds of services. There's the issue of interest with the forum at the moment which could be solved with one giant Staff or Community project. I say that if you want to get Staff Interest up, start a new revamp project - create a test board, allow staff to actively shape the layout, open up some exciting new ideas and show them all that you're interested and some of them should follow in your lead. To put this in a different perspective, it's similar to how America created a nation-wide Railroad system project to stimulate jobs and give people something to do. I guarantee you that when you say you're going to put the effort to reevaluate the entire forum and essentially change most parts there will be some people who become excited at this idea and want to contribute. I'm going in to another paragraph about Staff, I apologize for the length but I hope the Administrators are taking the time to read this. The thing that kept coming up about Boost to me before it opened was it's "Amazing" staff team in which you had some of the best Designers, Coders, and Moderators on ZB. There's a key problem with this, though, and that is that a lot of these times these people have already achieved their goals and could go off and work on their own if they wanted to. What you need to do is hire people who have things to learn that Boost can provide, the admirers instead of the admired. These people will be more dedicated because you can teach them things over time, and the more they learn at this specific forum the more they'll be inclined to love it. It's something I just learned through typing this paragraph - you can hire those people who can give you everything in quality but gain nothing in return and they may be doing it because they're nice but eventually they'll grow tired of doing that, or you can hire those who will use you to learn and hopefully eventually become experts and feel a connection or a need to post the things they make because this is the place they learned and sprang off from. One final piece I'd like to quickly comment on. The recent Administration and Staff name changes may have been for the 'lulz' but I can't really understand it, I don't know who is who and it just kind of seems to me like you panicked about having a professional and somewhat low-activity forum and hoped that you could encourage people to come and joke with you to change the feel of the forum. Though, I feel more like you've made it a playground now where you can do whatever you want and there's no point to it. I like how GForce does their carnival events or such and everyone takes a theme because those seem to me like they could be fun/funny and take a point of roleplaying at the same time. |

This made a great deal of sense. One thing that really bugs me is these "promised changes" that were meant to happen some days ago still haven't happened. Now, it partly bugs me for personal reasons but also because it's kind of lousy to keep disappointing people that are actually excited and interested for the upcoming changes. It makes it seem like the staff are lazy. Now, of course, i have no idea what goes on behind the scenes and therefore i am not outright calling anyone lazy; i'm merely stating that it appears the staff aren't really doing anything (with the exception of a few). Personally speaking, i was really interested in Boost. Despite my low level of posting i come on pretty much every day, at least 3 times a day and read through the majority of new posts. Now though, every time i come on, nothing seems to have changed and the board really feels stagnant, it's sort of putting me off... which is a shame. |

Whilst it may appear that our promised changes have fallen through, we can assure you that they are really taking shape behind the scenes and will be implemented as soon as possible. We need to put some thorough thought into these ideas as if we announce changes that aren't essentially going to fix the problems we have here at the moment, then there's no point in making any changes at all. Regardless, have faith Boost followers as we promise to have the ball rolling very very soon.

I really appreciate you Cody for taking your time in writing this post that has very good points to them. I appreciate it and it's very genuine of you, as a representative of Outline, another resource forum to come here and help with your opinion. I believe I can agree with everything, but there are a few points I have to comment. We definitely need more work on our layout and services we don't really need and add new ones. Sadly, so far I haven't seen a few ideas from the community, but then again, I am not so sure if we've given them plenty of chances. It is worth another try to see what would be good in implementing. We've always seeked ways to involve the community more, but it seems that the ideas don't work out because most people aren't sticking to them and perhaps sticking to something different we have to offer. There's a lack of enthusiasm as well, so we might try and trigger feelings of enthusiasm and optimism. Definitely. We have a lot of rivals in this area, and a few more services to expose ourselves at this point is a good idea, and I'd say at least fool-proof to a degree. I hate to say it and make it seem like we're blaming both our great friends and staff, but we really did not have luck with this. Indeed, they might be the best people for the job and a perfect team, but they had no goals as you said and were not happy being here, while they could be doing something else to prove themselves more worthy. They're always welcome if they want to work here, but we really do need a helping hand in here and people wanting to work. I appreciate all their time put in and even their efforts, but not everyone was up for the job. We've considered fresh blood so many new times, and we still haven't kept out promises (I'm sorry) to Lewis and Matt, but if they're still up for it, they will be promoted to the right groups. They're people that have talent and progress really fast. I can't say they're new to this field, but we do not need really experts that have been in web design for over 20 years (I'm exaggerating) and have been on place one in the top designer list. They're willing to design, learn and what is most important, it makes fun for them and they're at the level when they are not burdened and feel weight as if they have to do something in design and a level where it isn't all that fun because it isn't new. Actually, you're quite wrong on this. We've really had no goals with that. Knowing myself and Brendan being one of the most random people, we usually do something like that if not in the public eye as in changing names (in start, it was only for the administration to prank them) but then, we started receiving name change requests, which ended quite funny for something that unintentional. I remember wanting to change Brendan's profile a couple of weeks ago with an icon of Jennifer Lopez as a nun, but I forgot that I cannot edit the root admin account, so it went down the drain. He did however, use the icons after all. We really didn't think people would perceive it like that. As far as I can see, we've all woken up and started once again the project to refresh this place. At this date, we can't confirm anything that will happen, but a discussion in the staff lounge exists. Thanks again for your time, and for the time of everyone else, such as Lewis that has contributed to this topic with a lenghty post as well, but I believe I've covered most in what I've said now. If not, feel free to remind me to write it up. |
