Crossroads Spring Break list 2,500 pts; 2014 tournament season

2013 GT season was about getting a feel for the Indy GT scene. I pretty much wanted to get my feet wet and learn and observe. So I paint up and played models that I already had in my collection. Now it's time to try and take the next step. Build a WoC that can compete better versus the better tournament builds.

Last year I went 3-1-1 at the Crossroads GT & DaBoyz GT. My lists lacked the speed needed to handle the better MSU lists. Some where able to run circles around my slow moving Warrior list. With that said, I started painting up 2 Chimera's, 6 Scullcrushers and 10 Marauder Horsemen. All add a fast element to get on top of my opponent fast.

WoC Spring Break comp:

Warriors of Chaos – 0-1 Hellcannon, 3rd Eye of Tz not allowed on a character with a 3+ ward, 0-3 Flying units allowed in the
army, 0-3 Core Chariots, Daemon Prince can take max 3 of the following: Soul Feeder/2+ armor save or better/Mark of
Nurgle/Daemonic Flight/Magic Level 3 or higher. Max 6 SkullCrushers. 0-3 of the following: Daemon
Prince/Chimera/Skullcrusher Units

My list:

Tz Sorcerer Lord Lv4 [Lore of Tz & General] w/ Disc, Tails of Preservation, Charm Shield, Sword of Striking, Potion of Foolhardiness & Chaos Familiar ... 410 pts

Tz Exalted Herd [BSB] w/ Daemonic Mount, Barding, Armour of Destiny, GW & Scaled Skin ... 271 pts

Sorcerer Lv2 [Death] w/ Daemonic Mount, Dispel Scroll, Dragonbane Gem, Enchanted Shield & Ironcurse Icon .... 220 pts

10 Khorne Warriors w/ Musc, Shields & Halberds ... 210 pts
10 Khorne Warriors w/ Musc, Shields & Halberds ... 210 pts
5 Slaanesh Horsemen w/ Musc, LA, Flails & Throwing Axe ... 110 pts
5 Slaanesh Horsemen w/ Musc, LA, Flails & Throwing Axe ... 110 pts
5 Hounds ... 30 pts
5 Hounds ... 30 pts

1 Chimera w/ Reg & Flaming Breath ... 275 pts
1 Chimera w/ Reg & Flaming Breath ... 275 pts

4 Scullcrushers w/ Enscrolled Weapons, Musc, SB w/ Banner of Discipline ... 347 pts

Total: 2,498 pts

A] I went with the combo of Lore of Death & Lore of Tzeentch. I struggled with who to give the Chaos Familiar the Sorcerer Lord or L2 Death caster? In the end, I wanted to make sure I got Gateway & Gleen Magic each game. Also love how both Tzeentch & Death can add PD.

B] I also went with offensive punch of Khorne Warriors, S5 & I5 with 22 attacks. They are a part of my 2nd wave of attackers. Plus do not give up a ton of points.
They ended up winning over core Chariots in my list.

C] Speed element, between the fast cav and fliers. The army can move over the board real quick. Also these units can be hard to pin down. I hope to be able to play both point denial and smash mouth Chaos when needed. Even the Scullcrushers & two Daemonic Mount characters are pretty fast.

D] MSU not too many points tied up into one place. With the right spacing these type of armies are hard lock down and secure points off of.

E] Range attacks, between 2 Flame Template & S4 throwing axes. It's not a powerful shooting phase but adds options for me. I hope the Tzeentch Lore and Death snipes will also help with range attacks. Counting a ton on Gateway, to be honest. As it can solve a lot of problems for me.

All feedback welcome and thanks for reading...

This guy is great! To add to what you're saying; keep the familiar on him to ensure you get the spells you need and want. I went to a tournament without it on him and in one game didn't get gateway and that hurt!

Do you play the "breaking point" scenario at the tournament? If you do, you're screwed ;)

I like where this list is going. I've been thinking of using small khorne halberd warriors but i always scratch them off my list for chariots, trolls, horsemen and more dogs. How are you finding them? What do they struggle with?

I like your list, but I would make some little changes:

The life expectance of your lvl4 could be improved by giving him Scaled Skin + Armour of Destiny + Dawnstone (+2 re-rollable/ ++3 ) for the same price. +2/++4 is too risky for my taste!

The chance of recovering a wound is better than an extra point of armour, so I would replace the Armour of Destiny with the Talisman of Preservation, and the Scaled Skin with Soul Feeder. You'll also save 15pts.

MoS horsemen with ranged weapons are pointless if they wear light armour, as light armour means no fast cav rule!. Either take MoK horsemen with flails (90pts) or MoS horsemen with javelins + shields (85pts), but avoid the light armour... they will never be silver helms.

If I were you, I would buy the vanguard upgrade for the dogs, just in case.

The Standard of Discipline on juggernauts is a bit underwhelming without a BSB or lord accompanying them, so I would replace it with the Gleaming Pennant or the Standard of Swiftness.

Where is your leadership right now you are leadership 8 for the most part I know you want magic to be a strong point but magic can be finicky you would do better to have a lord and two level twos because leadership is something can trust you don't want to be staring down a terrorgiest and the best leadership you got is 8

I find breaking point games do not hurt me, as my BSB & General are so hard to kill. Also the Scullcrushers can be a hard nut to crack also. At some GT's Breaking point is not auto lost. But gives off victory points in it's place. Also both sides can be broken.

adicto:
My Lv4 never hits combat, unless it's taking out easy chaff or a Warmachine. I prefer the Charm Shield on him. More scared of a cannons and nasty miscast then anything.

Vantraxx:
In small units Khorne Warriors are the way to go.
A] ton of S5 attacks
B] do not give up a ton of points, if lost
C] great as 2nd wave of attackers

Nightsaber2010:
I am ok dealing with a Terrorgiest, I have Spirit Leech & Gateway. Also I have flyers to charge him if he moves up?. So let's see him come up to scream. He has to get close, I can sit back and cast away. LD9 is great, but with a tournament list? You need to make choices.

I play tournaments all the time , you can't redirect a terrorgiest they fly they heal wounds your chimera are leadership 5, and if you want to be competitive bring a DP instead if you were looking for advice then take some, leadership is the back bone of your army . There some armies in tournament play that use your leadership against you. You want cut down on that as much as you can.

And remember spirit leach is leader ship based so you are going to be 8 and they will be 9 or ten most of the time your not going to be wounding anything but shaft use what's effective your playing in a tournament. Leadership 9 spirit leach is better. Being that your general is tzeentch he can panic from hounds fleeing near him or chimeras being broken near him and your going to be rolling on leadership 8 and this is a good idea how?

Ldr 8 is a no-no.
The solution is simple: a warriors units with ldr banner to bring the sorc lord around. I know the speed of the disc is appealing, but on foot he gets a major advantage in many games (WoC and Empire for example): he's able to blast things off while beng untouchable. Those 2 khorne units look cool, but it's better to go with a bunker, the boosted ldr is too important.
Also, tzeench+death is an awesome combo. What would make it even better? An hellcannon. Think about the chance of having treason AND doom and darkness with an hellcannon on the table. For the same reason I would give the familiar to the death caster (and put him on foot).

Terrorgiest is 3x more effective versus DP, then a Sorcerer Lord of Tz. Also a Sorcerer Lord of Tz is 2x better at taking a Terrorgiest off the board. Heck a Tz Sorcerer is maybe our best counter to a Terrorgiest.

I love LD9 but it's not must have for me. WoC thanks to the mark of Khorne & Slaanesh can offset LD8 a little bit. I love the Nurgle DP [my best model in my collection is a DP], but Crossroads GT army restrictions have cut the balls off of him.

By the way, I never said anything about re-directing a Terrorgiest. Good VC player will never put it into combat in the first place. I did try to point out, yes it can fly. But the best counter to a flyer is another flying model. My opponents needs to get into the Terrorgiest scream range. My job to make sure my opponent only gets it off once or not at all.

I am happy to sit back at long range and cast Gateway, Spirit Leech & Bolt of Change at him, I do not need to get up close to the Terrorgiest, now my VC opponent does not have that same luxury. He needs to be close to scream with him.

I prefer to run a MSU style list, that is fast and hard for my opponent to secure points off of.

If you are brave enough to go ldr8, then yours look like a nice fast msu.
The two major choices I think you will face are:
-Tzeench DP instead of Sorc Lord. More vulnerable at the distance, but also another combat unit on the field.
-Chariots instead of warriors. I'd say that chariots are better, point for point, but give a try to warriors if you feel like it.

Was going over my notes & battle report from the Crossroads GT last year, then hit me like a ton of bricks. Going to run last year army design, but on steroids!

Unless he's packing death magic also (as the good VC players tend to do in the NE). In that case, his LD10 spirit leeches will give him the ranged edge.

Its a decent list but you're too vulnerable to death magic to beat your 3-1-1 crossroads record imo

I like this list... but I doubt now I will be running it. I got a much better list in mind right now. I went over my notes from the Crossroads GT and it hit my like a thunder bolt. Still does not mean, I will improve on the 3-1-1 record. But if I am right, depending on the luck of the dice and draw of opponent. I might be able to shock some of the big fish. I understand the current meta game much better and now it's about designing a better mouse trap to counter it.
